Namaskar,

Upadhyay ji, app se aisi ummid nahin thi.  All along, you have been posting great views.  Now why just a simplistic solution?  I request you as well as other members of this forum to give a thought to the problem and discuss the viable solutions.  Of course, we need to create large number of jobs.  But, how?  There lies the solution.

U’khand can stop migration by popularising herb cultivation: Khanduri

National Convention & Seminar on Business Enabling of Aromatic Plants & Products

Dehradun, 21 Nov: Chief Minister BC Khanduri inaugurated ‘BEAP-2007’, a two day National Convention & Seminar on Business Enabling of Aromatic Plants & Products’, at the Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP), here, on Wednesday. The meet is being jointly organised by CAP; Medicinal & Aromatic Plants Society of India (MAPSI) and Central Institute of Medicinal & Aromatic Plants (CIMAP).
The meet began with the Chief Minister BC Khanduri lighting a ceremonial lamp.
Speaking on the occasion, he said that Uttarakhand was blessed with abundant natural wealth and there was need to work towards taking advantage of these strengths.
“In the past, something has been done for the development of herbs and aromatic plants research in Uttarakhand. We should utilise this natural wealth. But, I think we can stop migration from the hills by popularising aromatic/herbs cultivation. Herb cultivation holds great potential here. I can assure all help from the state government for the development and promotion of the herbs/aromatic sector.”
Uttarakhand is making steady progress in the field of herb and aromatic plants cultivation. Indicating this, Vibha Puri Das, Principal Secretary, Forest & Rural Development, said, “We started the herb cultivation project in Uttarakhand in 2003. At that time, herb cultivation was taking place in 382 hectares. But, now the area has been extended to 1500 hectares and over 8500 farmers are involved in this activity.”
“We are promoting aromatic plant cultivation. But at the same time we are ensuring the health of the soil remains intact. Aromatic plats can be grown as a hedge, to keep wild animals away. As it can be cultivated as an additional crop, it can prove of financial benefit to farmers. The Centre for Aromatic Plants (CAP) is located in the industrial area of Selaqui. And its proximity has turned beneficial, as many pharmaceutical and other industries operating in Selaqui are directly in contact with it,” she added.
Dr SPS Khanuja, President of MAPSI emphasised on the need to conserve endangered species of plants. On this, he said, “The essential oil and aromatic raw material industry is failing to self-monitor itself with respect to conservation of the threatened plant species.”
Terming obesity a problem more common than AIDS and Cancer, Khanuja said, “Aroma therapy is proving to be an effective cure in problems of overweight. India can provide leadership by taking the lead in this regards.”
“The uses of aromatic plants are not limited to perfumery; they are now used in pharmaceuticals, beverages, etc. The demand and supply of aromatic plants can be met only through high tech cultivation,” Khanuja concluded.
Present on the occasion were Utpal Kumar Singh, Secretary, Horticulture, Dr Rajendra Dobhal, Director, UCOST, Nirpendra Chauhan, Ashok Sharma, Professor AN Purohit, Dr Hema Lohani and Vivek Bharti Sharma.

Sir JI,

You are right. Migration is due to lack of ample job opportunity. We have not been able to explore them.

Manu Ji,

Thanx for giving your views on the subject.

I agree there is no dearth of talent in hills but people do not get proper education and other basic amenities thereby shaping their talent.

There is a large number of youth which are roaming here & there in serach of job and they do not get any job  in thier own state. There is a need of generating employment opporunities which can stop the migration.
