Initiative on education in Uttarakhand
« on: December 25, 2008, 12:18:51 PM »
Namaskar,
As most of my fellow members know, Uttarakhand lacks basic infrastructure due to which our children in villages cannot compete with the city-dwellers.  I have had occasions to visit various parts of Pahad to have a first-hand knowledge of the situation.  I have been particularly apalled by the educational level in the Sult area.  There are four pattis of Sult - Talla, Malla, Valla and Palla - with Maulekhal being the Block Office.  After touring extensively I found that very few children are successful in getting higher education after 10+2, leave aside getting good jobs.

Therefore, with a few of my friends I have recently started an initiative to provide educational support to school-going children.  I thought that children in 11th and 12th standard have already chosen their field of studies, thus giving very little chance of any counselling and it would be better if we concentrate on the children from 7th to 10th standards.  We contacted the Principles of various inter Colleges and have been able to convince the Principles of Inter-College, Manila and Inter College, Kwairala to lend our helping hand.

Our simple proposal was to supplement the knowledge already imparted by the respective school teachers.  We proposed to hold classes in English, Maths and Science subjects for these classes one week every month.  Without concentrating on the chapter-wise methodology of imparting education, we would provide them information about their curriculum which they may not be getting from their textbooks.  For this we would be using projectors, laptops etc and would distribute reading material that would help them in better understanding of the subjects.  It would be our endeavour not to concentrate on the course curriculum but impart them knowledge that would stand them in good stead in their life.

Both the Principles have agreed in principle to let us hold classes one week in a month from April, 2009 onwards.  But they have asked to give a presentation in the third week of January, 2009.  The Schools would be busy in examination in the months of February and March, hence it would be beneficial to the students if we begin with the new academic Session in April, 2009.  We have promised to give a presentation from 19th to 23rd January, 2009.

The whole exercise needs large number of volunteers as it would not be possible for a smaller group to sustain the effort for a long duration.  At this moment, 2-3 of us would be going in January but we need a larger bench strength from April, 2009 onwards.  As such, I call upon my fellow members to help us in our endeavour.

Besides manpower, we also need logistics support.  I have already talked to a few people in this regard.  They have given their word to support me.  I asked them to provide transportation for our visits.  Shri Krishna Chaitanyanand Saraswatiji  Maharaj of Malli Manila Temple has given us his divine blessings and has asked us not to bother so far as boarding and lodging is concerned.

I may tell here that we have undertaken this initiative on our own, thinking that we should give back to our society what we have received from it, directly or indirectly.  We are prepared to spend from our own pockets as long as we can.  IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE HERE THAT I AM THE ONLY PAHADI MEMBER OF THE GROUP, OTHERS ARE FROM BIHAR AND UP BUT THEY HAVE PLEDGED TO SUPPORT ME WHOLEHEARTEDLY.  Now, I urge my Pahadi brothers to support me.

Anyone wishing to join me may please contact me through e-mail address: mdsundriyal@yahoo.com or mdsundriyal@gmail.com or phone numbers 011-23421110 (office) or 9250867656.

Let us make this a successful project by participating and whatever best we can do.

Namaskar,
I am overwhelmed by the response of my fellow members of this forum. Thanks everybody.

For implementation of any decision one has to think rationally and logically.  May be I am a bit older than most of my fellow members to think in these terms!! In these times anyone older by more than 5 years is considered OLD and people above 45 are DIANOSOROUS!!

Jokes apart, for initiatives like these one has to first assess logistics at command.  For that I have divided the whole project in two parts, for the moment.  I shall be touring the area, visiting the Schools and meeting the Principals (and hopefully have some kind of fruitful interaction with the students) between 19th and 23rd January'09.  I'll assess the requirements of the students and accordingly decide the curriculum and the best possible method to not only meet their aspirations but how to work within our limitations.

At the moment my guess is that we should form two teams, visiting the Schools alternately. This way we can visit the school every month, thus maintaining sustained thrust and monitor progress of both the sides - students as well as our team members.  The project really gets started in April, 2009 and the team which goes in April has to brief the team going there in May.  There should be constant interaction between all the members forming part of the two teams.  The teams should ideally interact through this forum besides personal interaction.

The teams will require course material.  Most of the books are available online at www.ncert.nic.in.  By the end of February or early March, I'll be able to generate the requisite supporting material.  We need to prepare at least 100 copies of this material for each visit to be distributed amongst the children. The next course of action for the members opting to teach would be to prepare themselves.  This is the hardest part for me.

Apart from this, we need transportation.  If we take 4-5 members in a team, we can take our own cars, just to reduce the expenditure.  Manila is approximately 350 Kms from NOIDA, so it may take 1000 Kms per visit, which means the team will have to spend approximately Rs.3,500/- per visit on transportation alone.  This is a conservative estimate.  If we hire private vehicles like Qualis, Innova etc, the cost would be more than double.

For this we require help of some industrialist etc so that this monthly expenditure of Rs.10,000/- (approximately) is taken care of.

If any fellow member has better ideas or wants to suggest something, please feel free to do so.

As I am on leave due to fever, I will be able to interact more frequently these days.  Till then,
NAMASKAR

Sir you have stated all the points and I too agree that for a sustained project we need finances and help from Industrialist and reputed persons. We should concentrate first on a particular area and than with more people joining the initiative we can spread further.

Sir,

I fully endorse your ideas and views.

We have basically two problems. First we have to form a team which can visit there as per stipulated time and second is monetary issue.

Members who have Saturday / Sunday off can mostly participate in this project as the area is not to far from NCR. Secondly, some members are near to this area can give the time without any problem leave etc only they have to make some adjustments.

Second major issue is money. Members can not devout much time due to pre-occupied job etc. they can come forward and help in monetary way.
