BS Reporter / New Delhi September 29, 2007

In its first year of commercial operation the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation (THDC) - a joint venture corporation of the government of India and Uttar Pradesh government - has earned a profit of Rs 130.9 crore during 2006-07. The Tehri dam station generated 891 million units during 2006-07.

Tehri power station plant has been operating at its full capacity of 1,000 MW. And the corporation has targeted of generating 2,649 million units in the current year. THDC has set a capacity addition target of 1,400 MW during the 11th plan (2007-2012). These announcements were made in its annual general meeting.

The Tehri dam project is the second storage scheme to come up in the northern region, which provides the much needed peaking power to the grid. It also provides irrigation benefits and drinking water supply to Delhi.

THDC’s 1,000 MW Tehri pump storage plant (PSP) has received government approval. THDC has tied up with Nuclear Power Corporation of India NPCIL) for the development of PSPs in the country.

The joint venture would also look to development of large hydro schemes, to leverage the financial strength of NPCIL, and the experience of THDC. THDC is also planning to diversify into thermal and non-conventional sources of energy.
