Giving specialised education a new definition, the Uttarakhand government is going ahead with a plan to establish an Ayurvedic university catering to just 110 students studying the subject.

"The decision has been taken keeping in mind the abundance of medicinal herbs and plants and the immense scope for Ayurveda in the hill state," says state health minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank. According to the higher education department, with the establishment of the Ayurvedic university and another catering specially to the aviation sector, the number of universities in the small state would go up to 13.

The proposed Ayurvedic University would be set up at Haridwar by combining the Rishikul and Gurukul Ayurvedic colleges. Both these colleges have combined seat strength of 110 for BAMS course and 15 for post-graduation. At present there are 4 Ayurvedic colleges in the state, two of which are government run. The total numbers of seats for graduate courses in these colleges is just 210 while only one college has 15 seats for post-graduate studies.

Notwithstanding such low interest in Ayurvedic studies, Uttarakhand is keen to set up the university while its parent state Uttar Pradesh is yet to think on similar lines despite having 10 government and 6 Ayurvedic colleges. Officials admit that if the university is set up, it would have to face financial hardships due to low student strength and constantly seek aid and grants from the state and Centre to keep functioning.

Maintaining that the university would boost Ayurvedic research, the government is justifying the step by stating that since it would come up in campus of existing colleges, not much money would be spent on buildings and infrastructure. At a time when renowned Yoga guru Swami Ramdev is spending crores in building the Patanjali Yogpeeth University in Haridwar for graduate, post-graduate courses and research in Ayurveda, only time will tell the relevance of setting up a government-run Ayurvedic university in such close quarters.

Since the state's formation in 2000, nearly a dozen universities have sprung up in Uttarakhand including some established by the state government to cater to specialized areas like technical education, forest and horticulture and Sanskrit studies.

Wheels India to boost capacity in Uttarakhand

CHENNAI: Wheels India, market leader in steel wheels and a strong player in the global market, will be ramping up capacity by 2 million to 10 million this fiscal with a capex of Rs 100 crore.

Besides consolidating its stronghold in wheels for cars, trucks, utility vehicles and tractors, WIL is betting big on the expanding market for large construction and earth-moving equipment wheels in the domestic and export markets thanks to the bustling infrastructure and mining sector activities.

WIL’s chairman and MD S Ram inaugurated on Monday an exclusive facility set up at Sriperumbudur at a cost of $8 million (Rs 32 crore) for the manufacture of larger wheels for high-capacity dumping trucks and earth-moving equipment. Representing its major customers in the line, Caterpillar vice-president-global purchasing Dan Murphy, Komatsu India MD Susumu Ueno and BEML director-defence business V Mohan were present on the occasion.

JMD Srivats Ram told ET, “The share of the construction equipment business has grown over the years to Rs 170 crore now, of which 75% goes to export markets. Both Komatsu and Caterpillar (which have plants near Chennai) account for two-thirds of this business. A major part of the investment in the new plant will be aimed at meeting the requirements of their growth plans ”

He said the new facility will start with a capacity of 7,000 large wheels and will be expanded to 18,000 wheels in three years. It will produce wheels for dump trucks of capacity between 50t and 100t. While the plant at Padi makes wheels for small and medium construction equipment, the new facility will make wheels for large mining trucks.

The first exclusive facility has been set up taking into account the industrial growth and increasing demand for commodities and input materials like iron ore, bauxite and coal. This will lead to increased mining activities and require capex on mining trucks. In addition, global players have set up plants in India to meet their needs of mining trucks in the region.

Mr Srivats said the company currently has a total production capacity of 8 million steel wheels from its plants at Padi, Rampur, Pune and Bawal (Haryana). This includes 5 million passenger car wheels, 1.7 million truck wheels, 1.2 tractor wheels and 1 lakh earth-moving equipment wheels.

This is to be increased to 10 million wheels this fiscal at a cost of Rs 100 crore. It has incurred capex of around Rs 60 crore in the first six months including Rs 32 crore at the Sriperumbudur facility. It is investing Rs 15 crore at Pant Nagar in Uttrakhand to cater to OEMs like Tata. It is also expanding capacity at Bawal.
In addition, the company has started the manufacture of forged aluminium truck wheels at Padi and its designs are being validated by major truck manufacturers in Europe. Srivats said WIL also expects to double its air suspension business to Rs 35 crore thanks to a growing market from private bus operators and STUs.

Expecting WIL to post a total net sales of Rs 1100 crore this year (Rs 1003 crore in FY07), the JMD said exports are projected to be Rs 230 crore (Rs 183 crore). This is expected to touch Rs 350 crore in a couple of years. It is now exporting to North America, Europe, Asia Pacific and South Africa.

Woodland to invest Rs 200 cr for adding 75 stores

New Delhi (PTI): Footwear major Woodland will invest up to Rs 200 crore in the next 12 months to add 75 more stores in the country besides hiking its production capacity as it looks to cash in on the retail boom.

Woodland Shoes Managing Director Harkirat Singh said that by 2008, the company plans to open new 70-75 exclusive retail stores in metros and Tier-I cities to take the total to 240 stores across India.

"Each new store will require an investment of Rs 2-3 crore and thus we would be spending upto Rs 200 crore in setting up new exclusive stores across the country," Singh said.

The company is also ramping up production capacity to 10,000-12,000 pairs per day from the current 6,000 pairs per day.

"We have set up five new manufacturing facilities in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh to cater to the increased demand. The new units are likely to be ready by 2007-end," he added.

With the benefit of higher capacities kicking in, he said the company expects to cross Rs 500 crore turnover in the next two years.

"We have crossed Rs 250-crore turnover in the last fiscal and we are expecting a growth of more than 35 per cent in next two-three year. Growing at this rate, we would achieve the turnover of Rs 500 crore by the end of 2009-10 fiscal," he said.

For Best Use Of Himalayan Rivers, Adopt Basin Planning: World Bank

Shimla: As the hard negotiated Indo-US Nuclear deal is in limbo, pressure on development of hydropower potential of Himalayan rivers mounts with a World Bank study on optimization of river basin development for Himalayan rivers recommending that planning, design, development and operation of hydro projects was better done at a river basin level than the current practice of taking each project separately.

Taking the Satluj and Alaknanda rivers as a case study, the report states that ‘there is compelling evidence to suggest that there are economic, environmental and social benefits for all stake holders to be gained from a river basin planning approach.”

The World Bank study done by Hydro Tasmania consultancy, at the behest of the Himachal Pradesh and Uttrakhand governments, is expected to impact the central government hydro policy, currently under formulation. The draft recommendation report has been circulated for discussion with the concerned states and the central government.

Michael Haney, senior energy specialist with the World Bank told My Himachal News that Himalayan rivers showed that there are substantial geological risks associated with hydropower development with no mechanism for shared knowledge development.

“Often there is a gap between environmental and social developmental plans and their implementation. There are considerable risks to the fragile Himalayan ecosystem with the compensatory afforestation and catchment treatment plans having variable success,” he said.

The report recommends ‘a strategic environmental assessment of the entire basin needs to be taken, Panchayats representatives can have greater involvement in the development of their basin and it could be considered designating certain sections of rivers or entire rivers as reserved for conservation, tourism and other low impacts uses.

The study established that silt was a major problem and simple modeling showed that optimization of a cascade of hydropower projects would result in greater energy output and less physical footprint than the current planned designs and operational plans.

For the Satluj basin the study supports construction of the Khab storage dam near the sensitive Indo-China border. “There is a strong case for such a storage, given the benefits of water storage, flow regulation, silt storage and flood attenuation,” the report states

With there being multitude of developers on a river basin, there is confusion amongst them. Many of the private developers are new to hydropower and don’t know the commercial risks that may arise. The already challenged road network face severe problems, the report states.

To move towards river basin planning, the study recommends establishment of a developers forum on a given basin that supports a mechanism for data sharing and decision making. Infrastructure such as access roads, construction power and evacuation transmission lines need to be shared, the report recommends

GVK group targets $10 billion market cap

Ch Prashanth Reddy / Chennai/ Hyderabad November 05, 2007

The Hyderabad-based GVK group, which is consolidating its infrastructure assets under one company, is aiming at a market capitalisation of $10 billion (Rs 40,000 crore) in a span of five years.

GVK is amongst India’s large infrastructure developers with its activities spanning the areas of hospitality, manufacturing, power, roads, airports and urban infrastructure.

Till now, it has invested over Rs 5,000 crore in its diversified business activities and has over Rs 12,000 crore projects in the pipeline.

As part of the consolidation, all the infrastructure assets will now come under one umbrella of GVK Power & Infrastructure Limited (GVKPIL), making it an integrated infrastructure player.

“The merger of the group companies will be completed by December this year. Thereafter, our market capitalisation will be in the range of $2.5 billion (Rs 10,000 crore). Given the infrastructure needs of the growing Indian economy, a four-fold increase in market capitalisation in five years is feasible,” group chairman, GV Krishna Reddy, told Business Standard.

Reddy said GVKPIL would be producing about 2,400 Mw of power five years down the line. Its total investment in the power sector following the execution of the three power projects on hand will be over Rs 10,300 crore.

The company is establishing two hydro power plants of 330 Mw and 370 Mw in Uttarakhand and a coal-based 600 Mw plant in Punjab.

The three new power projects involve an investment of Rs 6,970 crore. It is currently operating three gas-based power plants in Andhra Pradesh with a combined capacity of 900 Mw. These projects have been set up at a cost of Rs 3,345 crore.

While the 330-Mw hydel project near Srinagar in the Pauri district of Uttarakhand is scheduled to be completed by 2011, the construction of the 600 Mw Goindwal Sahib project in Punjab will commence in a couple of months

“The Punjab government has started acquiring 1,100 acres required for the project. IDBI, the lead lender, has started the due diligence exercise on the Rs 2500-crore project, which will be funded through debt-equity ratio of 80:20,” Reddy said.

The GVK group, which is currently modernising the Mumbai international airport, is looking towards modernisation of other airports in India. “Today, we have the technical capability and finance to take up such projects. We are also looking outside India for development of airports,” the chairman said.

According to Reddy, the Mumbai airport project is expected to post a net profit of Rs 140 crore as against Rs 80 crore last year.

The slum rehabilitation project around the airport, awarded by GVK to Housing Development & Infrastructure Limited, is a “windfall” to the group. The main attraction of the project is the transfer of development rights (TDRs) and 65 acres out of 276 acres of slum land to be given for commercial development.

On the other hand, Taj GVK Hotels and Resorts, a joint venture between Indian Hotels and the GVK group, has lined up investments to the tune of Rs 500 crore for its expansion plans.

The company plans to double its room strength to 1,400 by 2009-10 from the existing 700. It currently has two hotels under construction – one each in Chennai and Hyderabad. Besides, it is planning to construct hotels in Jaipur and Maldives.

“We have already signed a memorandum of understanding for constructing a hotel in Maldives. We are also planning to set up hotels in Delhi and Mumbai apart from considering setting up budget hotels in the UK,” Reddy said, adding the funds required for the proposed expansion would be raised through internal accruals.

Uttaranchal Laptop Market Envisions Better Growth

By Arun Pegu
New Delhi, Oct 19, 2007

Uttaranchal IT market is witnessing a slow but steady growth due to the establishment of a host of educational and financial institutions.
Though assembled PCs are making most of the business in the city, sale of laptops is on the rise due to their competitive pricing, mobility, and aesthetic appeal.

The demand for laptops is generated mostly from varied segments comprising corporate to the government.

Vineet Jain, vice president of Uttranchal IT traders Association says that the laptop market is growing at 30-40%, owing to the festive season. And as compared to the last several years, lifestyle and gaming products are generating good business too. Most of the demand comes from end-users and corporate offices.

Rajiv Sharma, proprietor of Aastha Enterprises says that the laptop market is capturing a good market share; popular brands like Compaq and Lenovo are leading in Dehradun. Initially, Aastha used to sell around 10-15 laptops in a month, but now around 70 units.

Considering the Laptop market scenario, Puneet Kaura, general secretary of Uttranchal IT Traders Association, says that all eminent brands like Lenovo, Compaq, and HP are experiencing good sales due to ready availability of servicing. Another reason for this is the greatly reduced price and stylishness of notebooks.

Servicing and replacement is always a big issue for many channel partners in many locations. However, Uttaranchal has a good presence of service centers.

While on the association front, the association recently conducted an election for new executive members for the year 2007-2008.

In the association executive body, Surjeet Singh of Elegance was elected the president, whereas Puneet Kaura of Interface Corporation was appointed the general secretary. Others in the association executive body are the Rajeev K. Gupta of R K Agencies as Treasurer; Vineet Jain of Teknomex Solutions as vice president; and Bipin Kothari of Prompt Services and Harish Narang of Narang Computers are the other board members.

When asked about the association's objectives, Surjeet Singh, president of Uttranchal IT Traders Association, said, "The major objectives of the association are to handle problems of the IT community related to companies, government, and private sector."

The Uttranchal IT Traders Association (UITTA) has 110 members. The most recent commendable achievement of the association was IT Chetna the trade fair. The association is in the process of organizing another big IT event in the month of December.
