Delta investing $50m in India
Chennai plant will supply Slovakia unit

PHUSADEE ARUNMAS

Driven by strong demand for electronic products in India, Delta Electronics (Thailand) Plc, the country's biggest listed electronics business, is poised to beef up its expansion in India, planing to invest about $50 million next year.

''We've already invested about 300 million baht in India and are preparing to allocate $50 million more to set up a new plant in Chennai,'' said Anusorn Muttaraid, the company's executive director.

Delta Electronics is one of a few Thai corporations that have pioneered investment in India.

''India is a very promising market and its tax incentives are very attractive. Our investments are granted a tax holiday for five years and a 50% tax cut for another five years,'' said Mr Anusorn.

''On top of that, India allows 100% foreign ownership and tax waivers are also available for imported machinery if the plants are located in industrial estates.''

Another advantage is relatively low labour cost. The monthly wage of non-skilled labour is just 1,800 to 2,000 baht.

Delta Electronics founded the wholly owned subsidiary Delta Energy Systems (India) in late 1996 in Gurgaon in Haryana state to assemble, market and sell power systems.

It later set up Delta Power Solutions India Private Ltd in 2007 to assemble, market and sell telecom power systems, uninterrupted power supply (UPS) units and other products.

Delta Power Solutions now operates two plants, one in Rudrapur in Uttarakhand state in northern India, making telecom power supplies and UP units, the other in Pondicherry in Tamil Nadu state, making telecom power supplies and magnetic components.

The Pondicherry plant is due to start commercial production on Aug 28 with output destined mainly for China. According to Mr Anusorn, the company is in talks with the central government to look for a site in Chennai to make low-end electronic components to supply the group's production base in Slovakia.

Last year's sales in the Indian market were outstanding, more than doubling to $96 million, said Mr Anusorn.

Sales are expected to top $150 million at the end of this year, about $2-5 million from exports.

Delta Electronics has set an ambitious target to raise its sales in India to top $1 billion over the next seven years.

The electronics market in India, one of the world's fastest growing economies, is vast since most products related to electronic components still need high-technology parts.

Delta Electronics reported total sales of 33.76 billion baht last year, a decrease from 43.55 billion baht a year earlier partially because of an appreciating baht against the US dollar. But its profits jumped from 1.96 billion baht in 2006 to 3.15 billion in 2007.

The company expected its sales would increase by at least 20% this year.

Delta shares closed on Friday on the SET at 20.70 baht, down 20 satang, in trade worth 1.87 million baht.

Lakshmi Precision plans Uttarakhand unit

Lakshmi Precision plans Uttarakhand unit

Lakshmi Precision Screws (LPS), the Rs 210 crore manufacturer of fasteners, is planning to set up a facility in Uttarakhand by fiscal-end.

The facility will be either at Pantnagar, where customer Tata Motors has a manufacturing unit, or at Haridwar, where Hero Honda has set up a new motorcycle unit.

More India business stories

A leading supplier of fasteners and cold forgings, LPS has three plants in Haryana, two of which are in Rohtak and one in Manesar. These will meet the needs of its customers Maruti Suzuki and Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India (HMSI). Last fiscal, LPS invested $6.6 million for ramping up capacity at its plants. The benefits of the investment may be seen this year, subject to the economic conditions in the country.

Lalit Kumar Jain, the chairman and managing director of LPS, said that the company hoped to achieve topline growth of 15-16% this fiscal. "This translates to nearly Rs 250 crore. Our target of Rs 500 crore for 2010-11 will be a challenge, what with raw material prices going through the roof," he said.

According to Jain, this fiscal will be "a period of huge uncertainty where inflation has crossed 10% and growth could be severely hampered in the short term."

He said suppliers were able to absorb the cost burden till December last year but had to pass on a part of it to their customers later.

"Our profits are being affected and we are trying to make up for it through diversification, change in product mix and new parts such as gears, blanks and high precision forgings," he said.

More India business stories

The company caters to the tractor businesses of Mahindra & Mahindra, John-Deere and Case New Holland; the light trucks segment of Swaraj Mazda and Eicher; and Volvo's heavy commercial vehicles business plus a part of its Sweden, Brazil and US operations.

Nano project: Singur's loss may be Uttarakhand's gain
« Reply #36 on: August 25, 2008, 03:03:17 PM »
New Delhi: It's the first working day of the week at the Tata Motors plant in Singur and access to the plant is being restricted after Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee launched an indefinite agitation outside the small car project site demanding the return of 400 acres of land to farmers.

Banerjee mooted a proposal to end the impasse that threatened to derail the car project.

Tata Motor's security personnel are limiting workers’ access to the plant. Workers are also being screened amid fears that some of them may be sympathetic to the Trinamool Congress.

Monday is the second day of the indefinite protest by Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee near the Tata small car site with thousands of farmers joining the party workers.

The National Highway 2, which passes through the area, continues to remain blocked and over 3,000 policemen have been deployed to prevent any untoward incident.

Meanwhile, sources have told CNN-IBN that Tata Motors is likely to launch Nano from its Uttarakhand facility if Singur agitation continues.

It is believed that the Uttarakhand facility in Pant Nagar is the Plan B for Tata if Singur doesn’t succeed. The Pant Nagar facility will make trial cars in the initial phase, according to sources.

Singur stir

Banerjee told a huge gathering from the dharna platform near the plant that there could be a peaceful solution by utilising alternate low-lying land for the vendor park.

The area around the Tata Motors Nano car plant was turned into a fortress with massive deployment of security while the Trinamool set up 21 camps around the factory to house the protestors.

As the CPI-M led West Bengal government tried to salvage the situation by offering to hold talks, Mamata rejected West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee's proposal that the government was ready with a package and wanted dialogue.

"That is an old proposition. That will not solve the problem," Banerjee chief told PTI when asked about the proposal.

Honda Siel’s power products unit shifts plant
By Indo-Asian News Service on Saturday, August 30, 2008
Filed Under: Business

The Rs.250-crore ($62.5 million) Honda Siel Power Products (HSPP), which manufactures generators, water pumping sets and general purpose engines, has moved its component manufacturing facility from Uttarakhand to Greater Noida near Delhi.

The relocation, announced last August, is aimed at consolidating operations and ensuring economies of scale.

HSPP started manufacturing machine components in Uttarakhand in 1988 after the state offered economic benefits, which elapsed after eight years.

“To save costs, it was better to shift component making to Greater Noida,” HSPP senior general manager (corporate) R.P. Mehrotra had said last year.

HSPP, formerly known as Shriram Honda Power Equipment Ltd, is a joint venture between Japan’s Honda Motor Co. and Siel Ltd, with Honda holding a 67 percent stake in the company.

Ace Construction signs MoU with Chinese firm

Ace Construction signs MoU with Chinese firm

Action Construction Equipment (ACE) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a Chinese construction equipment manufacturing company and is busy doing the due diligence to acquire it.

“The due diligence is going on and should be final in the next 4-5 days,” says Sorab Agarwal, director of ACE. If the report is positive, Action intends to close the deal within August. According to company sources, ACE will be investing a total of $15-16 million on the acquired entity, which includes $8-10 million for acquisition.

“It is not a large company but it has the potential to grow 1000% over the next two years. Their problem is that they lack capital and so haven’t been able to grow quickly,” he says. ACE is acquiring the company for its advanced technology as well as to have a ready international production base. “Chinese construction equipment is more acceptable internationally,” he explains.

Action will use the Chinese company’s technology, export the joint-branded equipment and get it into India as well. “We will provide the Chinese entity a captive market in India and that itself will help it grow 5-6 times. It is a good way for us to expand inorganically rather than greenfield expansion,” explains Agarwal.

In India, Action is setting up its fifth plant. The plant, to be set up at Kashipur in Uttarakhand, should be up and running next year, informs Agarwal. The plant will churn out 250 units of construction equipment a month and Action will be investing close to $3 million for setting it up. “This is our second plant in Uttarakhand. We chose the state for its tax subsidies,” he says.

The company is also entering the road-making machinery segment and concrete batching plant business in the near future. The road making machinery equipment will be launched in the next two months, informed Agarwal. ACE is a listed company with a turnover of Rs 401 crore in 2007-08 with a top line growth of 64% and bottomline growth of 82% in 2007-08.

The net profit of ACE rose 62.09% to Rs 12.27 crore in the quarter ended June 2008 as against Rs 7.57 crore during the previous quarter ended June 2007. Sales rose 66.96% to Rs 137.29 crore in the quarter ended June 2008 as against Rs 82.23 crore during the previous quarter ended June 2007.

The ISO 9001 company, started by a technocrat, is one of the fastest growing crane manufacturers. The company manufactures hydraulic mobile pick-n-move cranes, wheeled loaders, tower cranes, road making machinery and hydraulic mobile cane handler.

ACE cranes can be adapted for a vast range of possible applications due to their versatility. ACE also offers customised solutions for specific requirements. The company’s full-fledged production facilities are located in the industrial township of Faridabad near New Delhi.

The company’s 25 sales-cum-service centres across the country ensure prompt supply of spare parts and quality service to customers. The client base includes Reliance, ACC, Gujarat Ambuja, KEC International, Patel Engineering, Western Coal Fields, BHEL and Nalco.
