दिनेश जी का संक्षिप्त परिचय
=====================

Dear all,

I have done Post graduation in Mathematics from Rajasthan University, was the student of M.Phil. (Mathematics) but left that and joined M.Tech. (Computer Science) in JNU, New Delhi. I have also done Post graduation in Banking & Finance from NIBM, Pune.  Beside these I have also passed DOEACC ‘A’ Level papers and completed B.Tech. (Computer Science) from AMIE, India.

I have started teaching career as part-time tutor of different classes (9th  to 12th, B.Sc. and B.Tech.). Later as I joined JNU, Options increased and I started teaching as Part-time faculty for different exams (GATE, NET, Bank PO’s). I was also associated as part time faculty with different Institutes (Career Launcher (CAT, LAW, BBA etc.), Jamboree and The Princeton Review (GRE, GMAT, SAT)). After Completing M.Tech., I joined Siemens Information Systems Ltd., Gurgaon as Systems Engineer. Again my hunger for knowledge in different fields forced me to join Post Graduation in Banking & Finance (NIBM, Pune). After completing PG in Finance, I joined Career Launcher as Quant and LRDI Faculty, worked for couple of months. Meanwhile I got an offer from Online GMAT Test Preparation Company (MBAChase) and worked with them as Associate Director Academics. Working with different education institutes gave me courage to fulfill my dream to own an Educational institute, and with one of my friend I started an Institute for Study Abroad Examination (GRE, GMAT, SAT & IELTS-TOEFL) with the Name “Apotheosis Education” in Gurgaon. (www.apotheosisindia.com).

www.merapahad.com  has given me the opportunity to help in career guidance for the students of different streams as I am associated in the field of education for couple of years. I would try to satisfy queries related to MBA (India or Abroad), other Graduate or Post graduate exams and would provide the information related to these programs.

Please send me the query under this thread. For this, you will have to create an ID on www.merapahad.com and post your query accordingly.

Regards,

Dinesh Singh Gaira

As the world is becoming a global village, more and more students from India are going abroad for further studies. What is the procedure of applying in GRE, GMAT, SAT and IELTS-TOEFL? Please give elaborate detail on all and how should a person prepare to qualify them.

Dear Anubhav ji,
Thanks for your query.
I agree that more students are interested in higher studies in abroad. Quality and facilities are some of the primary reasons for opting studying abroad. Also there are  more career options (Research, Industry, Teaching etc.) after completing the higher studies from abroad.
Coming to the tests part:
Each test is prepared for  specific course/program
The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test)
The SAT is a standardized, multiple-choice test used by most U.S. colleges and universities for admissions and placement decisions. SAT scores can also be used to determine scholarship eligibility. The SAT is a test required of students applying to undergraduate/ bachelor’s programs in US primarily and other countries like Singapore, UK, etc.
The test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and held nationally (in India) six times a year. The test is administered in India once every October, November, December, January, May and June.

The GRE (Graduate Record Examination)
The Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) General Test is a multiple-choice admission test for applicants to graduate schools. This is mandatory for students who want do get a Masters Degree in the US.
The test is administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS), under the sponsorship of the Graduate Record Examinations Board. The GRE is a computer-adaptive test (CAT).

The GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test)
The Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is a multiple-choice test for applicants to business schools. This is mandatory for students who want to pursue a Masters degree in Business Administration in the US. The test is administered by Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC). The GMAT is a computer-adaptive test (CAT).

TOEFL (Test of English as Foreign Language)
The TOEFL test is an English language proficiency test and is administered in more than 180 countries, making it the most accessible test in the world. Internet-based testing makes it possible to greatly expand the number of test centers and increase access. The TOEFL test is also the most accepted test in the world. More than 5,000 colleges, universities, and agencies in 80 countries accept TOEFL scores. So, for example, students can use the test to study in the U.K. and other European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, and Korea in addition to the U.S. and Canada
TOEFL is a mandatory test for students applying for any course to US, UK, Canada other European countries, Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc. It is also required by the high commission of all these countries to issue Visa. It is administered by Educational Testing services ( ETS).

IELTS (International English Language Testing System)
IELTS, the International English Language Testing System, is designed to assess the language ability of candidates who need to study or work where English is the language of communication.
IELTS is jointly managed by the University of Cambridge ESOL Examinations (Cambridge ESOL), British Council and IDP: IELTS Australia. IELTS conforms to the highest international standards of language assessment. It covers the four language skills – Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.
IELTS is recognized by universities and employers in many countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK and the USA. It is also recognized by professional bodies, immigration authorities and other government agencies. IELTS is specified as fulfilling English language requirements for entry to academic courses by the majority of institutions of Further and Higher Education in Australia, Canada, Ireland, New Zealand, South Africa and the United Kingdom and currently by over 380 universities and colleges in the USA. It is also used by a number of professional bodies and governments worldwide, including the Ministry of Defense and the General Medical Council in the UK, the Australian Medical Council and the Australian Department of Immigration and Multicultural and Indigenous Affairs, the Medical Council of Ireland, the New Zealand Immigration Service, the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools in the USA and Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
In addition it is used for screening and recruitment purposes in-country by universities, business schools and professional bodies in the private sector in a number of overseas countries, including Brazil, Brunei, Bulgaria, Columbia, Cyprus, Denmark, Italy, Lithuania, Malaysia, Myanmar, Poland, Turkey and Vietnam.

For further details of these tests, please visit the following official sites;

GRE : www.gre.org, www.ets.org

GMAT : www.gmac.com ; www.mba.com

SAT : www.collegeboard.com

IELTS : www.ielts.org

TOEFL : www.toefl.org ; www.ets.org

Coming to the preparation part:
TOEFL / IELTS: Basic English skills required. The test measures speaking , Listening, reading and writing skills. Normally 1-2 months are required to prepare for these exams.
SAT: test is taken by 11th and 12th class students and required 3 -4 months preparation.
GRE: General Aptitude test, tests basic Quantitative ability (10th level) and Verbal Ability (Vocabulary, Grammar and Reading skills). Normally 3 months preparation is required for GRE exams. Emphasis should be on vocabulary building as verbal is the most critical part of GRE test.
GMAT:  This is a bit difficult compare to GRE and measure mostly logical skills in form of Quantitative section and Verbal ability (Reading comprehension, Critical Reasoning and Grammar). GMAT is taken by working professionals, who are not in touch with studies, generally required 4 months preparation.
Self study is first step toward preparing these tests as most of the related material is available of internet. One should start with basic preparation and then should consult with students (who have already taken the tests) or test preparation institutes.

I hope the information would help to understand the basics of these tests.
Please mail me in case of further query and information.
thanks
Dinesh Singh

Dear,
GATE  is the exam conducted by one of IITs for M.Tech. & Ph.D. program for Engineering and Science Stream. GATE is an All India based test which is conducted 2nd sunday of Febraruy for 3 hours (Objective test). GATE score is in form of percentile (What percent of stdudents appeared are having marks less than yours). GATE Score is valid for one year only. After getting a Valid GATE score one can apply to IITs, NITs, research institutes and universities for M.Tech. Ph.D. or research work. Certain Amount is provided to students ad stipend.

GATE exam application come in September and october mid is the date for submission. Result of GATE exam is declared in mid of March.
For Regular M.Tech. & Ph.D. : after a valid GATE score, applicants are called for Interview and Admission is offered based on these two.
Some of the institute also take their own test for M.Tech. or M.E. (JNU, BIT (Mesra), etc.).

Syllabus of GATE:
http://www.gate.iitb.ac.in/gate2k9/Child%20files/SYALLBI%20OF%20ALL%20PAPERS.pdf

My suggestion:
Please search for the college/Institute based on your stream /Engineer branch.
Look for the critera (Test, GATE or any other (Inetrview), NET- JRF etc).

It's always advicable to go for Regular M.Tech/ME program as corrspondence /Distance learning are not considered as good as regular programs. Also better Career options (Teaching / Research / Industry) for regular M.Tech /ME.

There are many univeristies and institutes are providing M.Tech /ME degree.
some of the Institutes offering M.Tech.
