Kamal Ji Namaskar,

I am sorry for this long post. Please spare few minutes for me.

I am a diploma engineer in Electronics and Communications Engineering  and belongs to Distt. Bageshwar. I did my schooling from Govt inter college.

After working for 8-9 years for a small companies ( selling EPABX/KTS systems, fax machines, telephones etc) as service engineer I realized that my career has been saturated and there was no growth due to the nature of business.

I took a risk and did training course on MCSE2003 and CCNA from IACM in 2006. Being an electronics engineer I did not have any issue understanding above subjects.

If you remember, in search of a job in IT field I also sent an email to you for the same after completing the course.

After giving interviews in couple of companies I got the job in a US based software development company located in Gurgaon.  I have been working here for more than 2 years now.

My profile involves:
- looking after IT helpdesk calls related to desktop issues of users from US and India offices.
- automated Windows patching of approx 250 desktops using SCCM2007(SMSv4)
- automated deployment of software and operating systems with SCCM2007
- providing remote assistance to users

We don't have any  datacenter infrastructure in India which includes (Exchange Server, Active directory, Storage Area Network,  VMware actualization etc. Everything  is being hostedin US and managed by US people.

Could you please guide me what should I do next to advance my career?

I also hold a certification on MCSA2003.

Regards,
Umesh Mishra

Thanks Umesh for your query.

You did the right thing by joining training courses on CCNA and MCSE. Hope it increased your job knowledge in those two areas. Did you got the CCNA and MCSE certification too?

Currently you are suited for two types of profile. By doing CCNA you have opted for network related job and by MCSA you are eligible for software related, server admin related jobs. Out of two which field gives you more interest? Because based on your qualification you are well suited for networking jobs and by experience (of two year in a software based company) you are suited for Server Admin related jobs.

If you are interested in Server Admin related jobs then I would suggest you to go for some practical experience of installing windows server 2008, exchange server, domain controllers, planning deployment and maintenance of group policy etc. Later on you can go for datacenter planning, SAN deployment, virtualization, disaster recovery etc. Based on your experience this would be better line if you have interest in that area.

For networking go for practical experience of router configuration, WAN planning and deployment, Network Management System (NMS) etc.

Select one of the line and then learn everything about that line.

There are some of the very good and most talked about features of new Exchange server. Learn about those. One of very good feature is on Unified Massaging by which you can have your exchange server talk to EPBX and users can read mail over phone. Learn about that and try to deploy that.

Send me a personal mail along-with your latest CV then we can discuss on that.

Sure daju, I will send you soon my resume.

Kahi koe job hogi to wo bhi jarur batana plsss....

Kailash ji,

Thanks for asking the question. Let me try to address your query.

The telecom as a sector has a very bright future in India. The current growth story of telecom is limited to urban sector only, the next BIG boom is anticipated from rural areas. As per estimates this sector will grow by 15 % CAGR ( Compound Annual Growth Rate) till 2014. There are lot of value additions, which are going to come for URBAN consumers too those are like 3G and IPTV. There are many new companies which are still entering onto the telecom market like Unitech, Aircell, Shyam Telecom etc.

So definitely there would be huge requirement for *skilled* man power in this sector be it hardware, software or marketing. I don't know in which area of hardware you are but wherever you are try to enhance your skill . Keep yourself updated with latest trends in your hardware area, subscribe to some magazines, newsletters to keep yourself updated, talk to different people of your sector, participate in seminars, forums, talk to experts to get their views. The ultimate aim should be to have the latest skills available with you.

If you have the skills then no-one can prevent you from achieving the greater heights. Best Wishes from my side.

If you have any specific question on specialized hardware then please send me personal mail. You can also send your CV so that I can see that and suggest you some thing specific to your requirement.

Thanks Manoj for your query.

Since you are primarily working in Windows environment you need to start something in Microsoft Platform only. The upcoming demanding areas are virtualization, 64 Bit computing, Cloud and grd computing, ERP, security etc.  You can learn about SAN and NAS environment, Network Management tools also. As far as ERP is concern you can go for MS Navision.

For any IT company certification gives you extra edge but you should have knowledge of your certification area also. Everybody knows that getting a certification, especially in MS area is quite easy. You have lot of dumps available on the internet. So get the real knowledge and then back that up with certification. Try to install and configure servers like windows 2008, exchange server, Domain server. Get the theoretical knowledge as well as practical knowledge of the same.  If you are interested in security area go for CISA certification. Learn about firewalls, security policies, security devices.

So there are many area for you. Start from one area and learn as much as you can learn in that area. Be focused on that area only for some time. If you feel you have mastered that then move to another area.
