Re: ASK YOUR QUESTION TO MR SHIV JOSHI - FAMOUS MUSIC DIRECTOR OF UTTARAKHAND!

Namaskara Shiv Joshi ji,

It’s indeed our privilege to have you in our forum. Welcome to the forum.
I have several queries regarding the folk music of Uttarakhand. I will dare to clarify some of them from you.

Today Uttarakhand Folk music is getting commercialised. Many people think that having a pahadi song means to release a VCD. In VCD the music gets secondary. Why can't we have a song without a VCD. Why can’t we use traditional form of music.

I could not understand, what is the next form to keep the music.

I mean instead of using traditional form of music and instruments we are trying to follow filmi music. We are not using the rich heritage of traditional instruments and form of music like jhoda, chanchari.

Tell me one thing. U are producer of a company and you have to record 2 artists for one album :
1) Daler Mehandi and second Gulam Ali

in that case what u will do keeping in view the benefit of your company.

Uttarakhandi folk music is very sweet but most of the time it is not being marketed well. When the same music is used in films then it becomes famous. If you play ‘bedu  pako baro masa’ then probably many would not recognize but when you play the same tune in “ Thanda matlab coca cola” then nearly  everybody would recognize and appreciate.

So its the marketing of the song/music not the song to blame. How to break that scenario?

in present era,

no one is interested in listening their own folk styles and oldies. They want rhythm. I have seen personally seen this fact. 60 per cent generation never listen our albums. Out of 40 per cent 20 % never purchase casettes they just believe in barter system. Rest 15 % young generation they dont want oldies. Rest 3% are unable to listen songs due to their old ages and burdens and only 2% people like oldies for which a company can not be run. So be positive always and change is the law of nature please accept it.  It is my personal intention that my music must be stand along the other states music.

Another point is that today music is easily available over the net using pirated methods. No body seems to care about copyright law. In this kind of scenario when the entire music industry is facing the same problem how can a music director would survive?

U know the cost of that add - 5 crore.
And the biggest hit album of our culture earns less then 15 lakhs. 15 lakhs means a worth to this industry.

Noboday can survive.  In UK it is not a problem because here in this industry there is no Music Director. Only they are a bit of arranger. Because tunes are made by singer himself. MD is only putting music on that. So this is not a difficulty here.  Our music will be more beautiful when it will come to the hands of composers, if they be paid for their hard work.
