There has been classification of Garhwali folk songs including Ravain folk songs.

Classification of Garhwali Traditional Songs: A Debate

Garhwali folk songs are so varied and are in such numbers that there had been debates and discussions for classifying Garhwali folk songs

Taxonomy by Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna (1954):
Analysis of Garhwali folk songs started by Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna:  Dhunyal (1954) is first work of analyzing and classifying the Garhwali Folk Song . Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna classified Garhwali Folk Songs on the following types:
1- Mangal (auspicious folk songs)
2-Kula char (Introducing and description of family tree related folk song)
3-Panwada (praising achievers folk song)
4-Khuded (sad folk song)
5-Jagar (Awakening songs sung in Ghadela folk song)
6-Tantra Mantra
7-Hori (Humrous and sung at Holi time folk song)
8-Chakhulya (Personification of animals folk song)
9-Naya Geet (New folk song)
The main flow on this classification is that it is not analyzed on scientific basis but on conventional basis .
Classification by Dr Govind Chatak  (1956)
Dr Chatak is credited for doing depth research, study in collection and analyzing Garhwali folk songs. Dr Chatak classified Garhwali songs on the basis of local names as he accepted in introduction of his classic book ‘Garhwali Lok Geet’ and he classified the Garhwali folk songs on the following divisions:

B-6-Garhwal ke Khuded Geet (1965)
C--Chham Ghugharu Bajala (1964)
D-Garhwali Baramasa
Dr Shiva Nand Nautiyal never thought of analyzing Garhwali Folk Songs as his above contemporary scholars were classifying songs. Only, in 1979, dr Shiva Nand classifed Garhwali folk Songs in Garhwali Manas (1979, page 52) and surprising ly his classification is more scientific, more subtle, more clear than his contemporary researchers. He divided following folk songs and dances together as follows:

1-Mangal Geet: K-Awhahan Puja geet, Kh-Puja Geet, G-Vivah geet
2-Jagar : Narsingh, , Nagarja, Devi, Hantya, Pandav, Bhairon etc

17-Patkhai men Chhuda folk songs
18-Naunyali folk songs
19-Chaumasa folk songs
20-Duda folk songs
21-Samayik or contemporary folk songs
By the above analysis we may state that Dr Shiva Nand Nautiyal’s classification is appreciable in terms of terminology and subtle .

There were four stake holders in constructing the Hauj (irrigation water reservoir)-block aid, contribution from villagers and constructing agencies and management committee.
When the Hauj was being constructed the Jaspur women created affine folk songs about constructing a public utility Hauj.
The folk song is quite long and this writer is providing a few lines of that folk song. The entire folk song provide enthusiasm to villagers and also provide historical details as how people constructed Hauj.

The Work folk song is a piece of folk music connected closely to a specific work. The work folk song could be sung at the time of work or at other time. E. Gioia (2006, Work Songs) states that work songs are as old as the human societies. Gioia divided agrarian and pastorals songs into following classes that had been altered by this author as division of work folk songs-
1-Hunting folk songs
2-Cultivation folk songs
3-Herding folk songs
4-Modern industrial folk songs for seaman, factory workers, cowboys, mine workers etc.
The following Garhwali folk song is about paddy plantation.

Women are busy in transplanting paddy. A flute tune is heard by women.
A woman asks another woman – What is there in flute tone?
The other woman tells that my husband is sending message for you.
O Paddy planters! Do plantation correctly.
The Basmati plants should be planted densely.
Since you are my sister in law (younger brother’s wife) I can’t tell you directly by do perfect transplantation.
The white mark header buffalo delivered the child.
You come to cowshed.
My husband sent message to bring ten tons grass (pindo) for buffalo and cows.
The Surajkunwar cow also delivered child.

Asian Folklore, Folk Legends, Folk Myths of Kumaon-Garhwal, Haridwar, Uttarkahnd-72

Asian Pauranic /Epic, Marathon, Classic, Impressive, Grand, Mahabharata Folklore, Ramayana Folklores, Folktales, Folk Stories of Haridwar,   Garhwal, Kumaon, Uttarakhand – 10

                                         By: Bhishma Kukreti

Mahabharata influenced the most to Kumaunis and Garhwalis from the epic time. There are many lyrical and semi lyrical folk tales about Mahabharata stories in Kumaon, Garhwal and Haridwar. The following few lines are from Kumaoni Jagar (Lyrical Ritual Folktale) about Yagya preparation by Pandavas. The local folk song creator altered the story with local touches.

The folk song is a long lyrical folktale sung by Jagari (priest playing drum and singing too).

Hundred Kaurava brothers and five Pandava brothers lived in Hastinapur. Kaurava performed a big great Yagya. The Yagya fire burnt Indra’s foot palm and Sheshnag hood.

Bhima insisted his elder brother Yudhistar for performing Yagya too.  Pandavas asked Narada sage about Yagya ritual materials. Narada replied that Rhinoceros from Himalaya forest (Payal), pure gold from Lanka, Milk of Kapila cow, flowers of Audumbar and fig and fins of Sayarbadi.
Arjun started journey towards Payal (Himalaya) and Bhima started journey towards Lanka. On the Lanka path, there were deceptive people. They offered poisonous pudding to Bhima. By taking pudding, Bhima became unconscious.
Arjun had Vayupankhi horse chariot. Arjun was taking bath into Ganges at Mayapuri where Parvati used to take bath and Shiva used to live there. At the same time, Parvati came with pitcher there to fill water. She was shocked that Shiva was the most handsome man in the world. She was confused by seeing handsome person as Arjun. She thought that is Maya/magic of Mahadev. Parvati asked Arjun that she would take bath with her. Arjun told her not to speak further sinful words. Otherwise he would die there.
Parvati became angry. She came to Shiva and showed her damaged pitcher and complained about Arjun. Shiva was aware of all this. Shiva called Arjun to his court. When Arjun came at Shiva court, Karna was already there. Arjun and Karna offered Shiva water from seven oceans.
Arjun took the blessing from Shiva and started his journey towards Himalaya (Payal). When Arjun reached to Payal, Arjun did not see any animals in Payal. Arjun asked his chariot driver. Arjun showed his concern for not getting Rhinoceros there. The chariot driver advised Arjun to throw Rain creating arrows that there is greenery in the region. Arjun threw rain creating arrows and the whole area became green with plants.
The wife of Gainda (rhinoceros) dreamt that her husband got arrow on his chest from of Pandava. She advised her husband Gainda not go grazing to Payal. However, Gainda refused to abide his wife advice. With his fellow rhinoceros, Gainda (rhinoceros) went towards pond. Gainda offered water to Sun God and his master Gaindadhar. Then after taking water, Gainda sat for rest. Arjun and his chariot driver were hiding behind bush. Arjun made Gainda unconscious by sharp arrow. There was sharp cry of Gainda while becoming unconscious.
Gaindadhar started rain of stone into pond.
Hearing the cry of Gainda, his master Gaindadhar came to Kwiriya pond. Gaindadhar was the son of Arjun from Saranga but Gaindadhar was unaware about this fact. Due to birth in Mool Nakshatra, Gaindadhar was sent far away from Arjun.
There was fierce fire between Arjun and Gaindadhar. Gaindadhar used Mool arrow on Arjun. Arjun became unconscious. Gaindadhar informed his mother about killing a person. Saranga disclosed the truth before Gaindadhar that he had killed his father.
Saranga told her son Gaindadhar that he had to leave for Naglok to bring Amrit (nectar). Gaindadhar reached to Naglok. He killed hundreds of snakes and snatched Amrit pitcher. Gaindadhar reached to Payal with Amrit pitcher. Gaindadhar sprinkled Amrit on Arjun. Arjun became alive.
Arjun told to his son that Gainda is a must for Yagya. Arjun returned d Hastinapur with Gainda.
Arjun came to know that Bhima did not return from Lanka. Arjun started his journey towards Lanka. On the way, Arjun saw unconscious Bhima. Arjun sprinkled Amrit on Bhima. Bhima became conscious.
Arjun reached to Lanka road. Hanuman was taking care gate for Lanka road. Hanuman wanted to stop Arjun. Arjun reached to inside Lanka road. Arjun met there his wife Supdhara (Subhadra).Arjun told her that he had come to take pure gold from Lanka. Subhadra got blessing from deities that the night would be as twelve years. Arjun and Supdhara were taking sleep. Arjun awoke and started journey towards Lanka.
Ganga wanted stopping Arjun. Arjun requested Ganga to make path for him. Arjun threw arrows and made Ganga bent from. From that day, Ganga flows in bent form.

Hanuman was ahead of Arjun. Arjun wanted to enter in a temple. Hanuman advised temple priest to ask Arjun for human sacrifice for temple ritual When Arjun entered temple, the temple priest asked Arjun for human sacrifice. Arjun killed priest.
Arjun reached to Mandodari pond. Mandodari lured Arjun for making love. Arjun told her that his wife Draupadi was more beautiful than Mandodari.
Arjun changed his appearance and reached to Vibhishan palace. Arjun took Lankabuki gold and reached to Hastinapur with that pure gold.

There quite a few folklores in Garhwal and Kumaon about Ramayana epic stories. If at all found those are in customary fashion. Very fewer efforts were made by local Kumaoni-Garhwali folk literature creator for localizing Ramayana epic stories.
The following folk songs lines are from a long religious Kumaoni folk song. The story of said epic folk song is about second exile for Sita but with local touches.

Rama with Sita and Lakshamana had returned to Ayodhya from fourteen years exile of living in forests.  One day, in Ayodhya, sister of Rama asked Sita the reason that she was in Lanka but Sita never depicts stories of Lanka of Ravan.
Then Sita illustrated through drawing about Lanka. There was Lankagarh, Rakshas army, Palace and all warriors. Everything was made by gold. In centre there was drawing of Ravan. Ravan was shown as if he had twenty elephant power.
As just Sita was showing the drawing to her sister in law that Rama came there. Rama saw the drawing illustrated by Sita. Rama saw the drawing and illustration. Rama suspected on Sita. Rama ordered exile for Sita. Rama ordered his younger brother Lakshamana to leave Sita in dense forest. Lakshaman left Sita in dense forest. When Sita awoke she was at the bank of Yamuna in dense forest. Sita saw in all direction nobody was there. Sita became unconscious.

Folk Songs, Folklore, Folktales, Folk Ballads, Folk Stories of Human Behavior, Human Emotions, Human Relationship, Human Psychology, Human Sensitivity, Human values, Human Sacrifices, Contemporary subjects,  interpersonal bond from Haridwar,   Garhwal, Kumaon (Uttarakhand) – 18

                              Place Branding in Modern Time

Place branding folk song creation has been there from the beginning of human civilization. The place branding folk songs or folk sayings or folk proverbs influence men or societies for constant human migration, invasion or search for new land. Columbus became ready to search land India because his countrymen used to sing folk song praising prosperous India.
From marketing point of view Philips Kotler mentioned first time place branding as part of marketing. However, Simon Anholt is said to be father o f nation branding, region branding country branding or city marketing concept.
Simon Guy ET all Wikipedia define place branding”Place branding is the process of image communication to a target market. It is invariably related to notion that places compete with other places for people, resources, business etc.”

Garhwali Folk Songs for Place Branding

When globalization and nationalization was less heard and modern communication medium was not available, the place branding was done through folk sayings, folk songs etc.
Every village needed place branding for getting suitable marriage proposals, export –import through barter exchange, self esteem enhancement and many other social or economic purposes. There were many sayings and folk songs in each region about the villages of the area concern. These folk songs or sayings or tales used to affect each others for getting same results as in today time a tourism or calling investment advertisement receive the results.
In today’s context, place branding creates a value for place in old time, in Garhwal or Kumaon folk songs or folk saying used to create value for a particular place or region. The folk song - बावन गढ़ कु देश वीर भड़ू देश,धन रै कफू चौहान धन राइ बियर जवान  creates an positive image of ancient Garhwal and was fir for self esteem enhancement. The folk saying in Gangasalan, Garhwal region -  जाणा ढांगू , आणा आंगू   was actually a negative branding for Dhangu region that says –Be aware if you are visiting Dhangu. चौंदकोट्या बांद   was appositive image for beautiful girl of Chandkot region.
Gweel Kaunk Sikki Badi: Example of Place Branding Folk Song from Yamkeshwar Block
The following few lines of along folk song were sung in Dhangu and Dabralsyun region of Yamkeshwar block (Dhangu, Langur, Ajmer, Dabralsyun and Udaipur Pattis of Lansdowne Tehsil of Pauri Garhwal).
The song was sung in Thadya style and at the time of Song month Chait.  Though the song might be teasing for quite a couple of villagers but was popular before sixties.
