BALI DEVI..

The Uttarakhand region in the Himalayan foothills in India is rich in forest resources such as timber, limestone, magnesium, and potassium, which have been commercially exploited over the centuries. Forest conservation policies traditionally restricted the access of local communities to these forests. Combined with large-scale deforestation due to logging, these policies resulted in large-scale migration from the region. In the 1960s, entire villages were depopulated.

Women often stayed behind in the villages. They faced increasing difficulties as environmental degradation deepened and spread, resulting in acute water, fuelwood and fodder shortages. Communities gave up raising livestock, adding to the problems of malnutrition in the region. Natural disasters increased in intensity as watersheds were deforested and flooding and erosion increased.

The increasing adversity of hill life prompted local people to resist the destruction of their land and livelihoods. The first confrontation occurred when a forest concession was granted to an outside company rather than to local interests. Activists fanned out across the Himalayas to organize communities against commercial logging operations that threatened their livelihoods.

In 1974, state government and contractors diverted the men of Reni village to a fictional compensation payment site, while labourers disembarked from trucks to start logging operations. Under the leadership of Gaura Devi, a 50-year old illiterate woman, women left their homes to hug the trees and prevent them from being cut. A four-day standoff ended in victory for the villagers.

The actions of the women of Reni were repeated in several other places in the region, as hill women demonstrated their new-found power as non-violent activists. Their spontaneous movement eventually culminated in the banning of tree felling above 1 000 metres in 1980, by India's then Prime Minister, Indira Gandhi.

Another achivement.

Nishtha Pharasi has made the most of her two first class women's cricket matches[/color]DEHRADUN, 29 Oct: Nishtha Pharasi has made the most of her two first class women's cricket matches, which she played recently. She cracked 109 runs against Rajasthan in a one day match to prove her talent at the national level.
Nishtha Pharasi is a BSc first year student of the local DAV (PG) College. She was recently selected to represent the UP women's senior side. Playing her debut match, she scored 23 against MP. After making a decent debut, this young girl from the Doon Valley cracked a splendid century against Rajasthan.
The credit for grooming Nishtha as a cricketer goes to coach Bhupendra Singh 'Bari.' Praising her coach, she says, "I have learned cricket right from the beginning from Bari Sir."
Some five years ago, the parents of Nishtha Pharashi approached cricket coach Bhupendra Bari to train their daughter. She began her cricket practice under Bari and today she is in the senior UP side.
On the selection of his trainee, Bhupendra Bari says, "She did all the hard work and deserved to get selected in the side. Her success will inspire other girls to excel."
Nishtha did her schooling from the Central School (Hathibarkala 2). On her early days as a cricketer she says, "When I started I was the lone girl to opt for cricket. But, now, cricket is gaining greater popularity among girls."
Nishtha is preparing for the UP versus Railways match to be played in Dehradun next month. She has also been named as the captain of the under 19 girls team of UP. The under 19 game is slated to take place from 12 November in Kanpur.

India - female broadcaster

© UNESCO Women self help groups are playing an increasingly important role since the community radio station “Mandakini Ki Awaaz” (The Voice of Mandakini) located in Bhanaj, Rudraprayag district, Uttarakhand, India started its operations in 2004.
In the last few months, their participation has registered a quantum leap forward with the women taking ownership of the sustainability of their radio centre.

In February 2007, a women self help group in the village of Machkandi opened a post office savings account to collect funds for the repair and maintenance of the satellite radio receiver that their group had received from UNESCO. The community radio has been established with technical support and training from Ideosync Media Combine and Equal Access, two NGOs working in the field of development communication and long standing partners of community radio groups in the region.

Prema Devi, who heads one of the groups says: “When we buy a buffalo, we have to think of all the related arrangements that go with it – fodder, a clean space, and plenty of water; [similarly] when we have helped set up a source of information for the community, we have to think about how to maintain it as well.” The group’s decision is reflective of their resolve to play a greater part in the process of information dissemination to the local communities.

The radio team has also worked with local schools to involve students in creative activities. The Principal of a Junior High School in Kyunja village says: “After the establishment of the Bhanaj [community media] centre, our students have received training. And, as a result students have started publishing a fortnightly newsletter called ‘School Jagran’. This has given them a space to express themselves besides resulting in a marked improvement in their language skills.” Today, the groups that are partnering with Mandakini Ki Awaaz CR are unanimous in their commitment to the development of the local community.

In another show of community action, the villagers of Koti in Tehri Garhwal district worked collectively with Hevalavaani Samudayik Radio to move the satellite radio receiver provided to the village from its original site to the local panchayat ghar (panchayat hall).

As the earlier caretaker at a youth group was not able to maintain the unit, the villagers decided to move the receiver to the panchayat ghar. Appreciating the villagers for their action, Rajendra Negi, a member of the Hevalvaani CR group, said: “If this kind of collective action continues to prevail, it won’t be long before community radio stations achieve their full potential and help in the establishment of model societies.”
