contributions of Prof. D. D. Pant

Dr. D.D. Pant was a rare and judicious mix of a physicist, an educationist and a social activist. He was an institution in himself.

He was a student of Nobel laureate, Sir C.V. Raman and had the rare distinction of doing his post-doctoral with him. Dr. D.D. Pant imbibed a scientific temper from the great C.V. Raman and an insatiable quest for truth for which the great scientist was known. Dr.Pant was his favourite student and he profusely expressed his appreciation for him and wanted him to work in the lab of a Nobel laureate, outside India. Dr. D.D. Pant infused with a spirit of nationalism and Gandhian ideology politely refused the offer and opted for a career in teaching and research in Agra College, Agra at a paltry sum of Rs.100 only. Dr. D.D. Pant sacrificed his career and preferred to popularize Physics in a nation which had been shackled by the alien yoke.

Dr. D.D. Pant did not make a compromise with his ideology of popularizing Physics in India. Untouched by brain drain, he stated in a recent interview that *I have no regrets for sacrificing my career and I don*t gloat over what I sacrificed; but given an opportunity, again I would follow the same path.*

In 1964, he declined the position of Professor and Head of the Physics Department of Rajasthan University because research equipment support was not assured to him. In 1972, he resigned from the coveted position of Director of Education, Uttar Pradesh to become Dean of Science and Humanities at Pantnagar University so as to continue his work as a scientist. In 1973 he accepted the founder Vice Chancellorship of Kumaun University for fulfilling his childhood dream of disseminating education to masses in the hills who could not afford education outside the region owing to economics constraints. His motto was :education for those who are residing in fragmented pockets in geographical isolation. It was a result of his total dedication toward research that the Physics Department of D.S.B. Campus, Kumaun University earned an international repute with the most advanced equipments in the frontier field of Time Resolved Spectroscopy and its identification as a national centre in this field. To him also goes the credit as a Vice Chancellor that he invited Professor K.S. Valdiya and Professor J.S. Singh to join Kumaun University both of whom were awarded FNA (Fellow of National Academy of Science) during his tenure as Vice Chancellor.

For a person of his academic achievements several honours were conferred on him and he got the opportunity to work as a Fulbright Scholar (1960-61) with Nobel Laureate Prof. M. Kasha of USA and in Henzberg*s Lab in Ottawa. He was awarded the Raman Centenary Gold Medal and had the rare distinction of being the first scientist to receive the Professor Asundi Centenary Award.

He had been a great teacher, had supervised the research of 20 Ph.D. students, and published 140 research papers in National and International journals. All the Ph.D. scholars from his school of Photo Physics have blossomed into good teachers and scientists and are working in leading institutions, both in India and abroad.

Dr. D.D. Pant was an avid reader and had a voracious appetite to delve into subjects like Ecology, History, Philosophy, Culture and Literature, etc. His communicative and oratorial skills are impeccable and he had a tremendous capacity to simplify any subject and communicate it to the audience in an extremely popular style. His penchant for reading and his analytical skill laced with outstanding dialogue delivery and language had made him a very popular teacher and a thinker.

Dr. D.D. Pant was a self-made man, with a very humble background. He got his early education in a village school of Pithoragarh district and had to negotiate a distance of 50 km to the road head from his village. This is why he had a deep insight into rural problems of the Himalayan region. The ruggedness of the terrain, its inaccessibility and lop-sided development by the U.P. Govt. in Uttaranchal, his anguish and concern for the region inspired him to institute the Uttarakhand Krantidal and mooted the idea of a separate hill state.

Dr. D. D. Pant became a lifetime legend as founder Vice Chancellor of Kumaun University. The quality which distinguishes Prof. Pant from rest of the Indian scientists is that he combined undertaking research of highest quality with his commitment to social work that is reflected in his widespread popularity among the masses of the rural hills. His awe inspiring popularity had wafted through the masses and made him a source of inspiration not only for students but also for the village folk. It would not be an exaggeration to state that his humane attitude and sensitivity towards societal problems had made him a folk hero in Uttarakhand.

D. D. Pant (1919–2008)

The organization of the 1989 National Symposium on Laser and Spectroscopy at the Banaras Hindu University (BHU), Varanasi coincided with 50 years of spec-troscopy research in the university. Tenof the senior-most students of R. K. Asundi, who had helped him in making BHU in-ternationally famous in the field of mo-lecular spectroscopy, were honoured bythe university on the occasion. D. D. Pant (then 70 years old) and P. Venkateswarlu were then the only two active scientistsin research, with Venkateswarlu havingset up the spectroscopy laboratory fromscratch at Huntsville, USA after achievingthe same feat at IIT Kanpur many years ago, and Pant having, at long last, ac-quired equipment for his picosecond ex-periments at Nainital. When Pant and Jagdeo Singh, students from the first batch of M Sc Spectroscopy, met their former teacher Nand Lal Singh (then 85years old, whom they affectionatelycalled ‘Master Saheb’) on the occasion, emotions ran high with reminiscences ofbuilding the spectroscopy laboratorybrick by brick.Devi Dutt Pant, born in 1919 in the remote village of Deorari in the hill dis-trict of Pithoragarh now in Uttarakhand, preferred BHU over Allahabad Univer-sity in 1940 for his postgraduate studies in physics because of his involvement in the freedom struggle. His love for Banaraswas intense till the end; he did not be-lieve in rituals, but he was highly spiri-tual and the Sankatmochan temple was his most preferred place after the BHU campus, perhaps because of its serenity. He would remember following the Hindi poet, Nirala on the road in front of theBirla and Broacha hostels, among a groupof students who had great admiration for the famous poet in his torn kurta andcarefree mood.Pant was one of the favourite studentsof Asundi, who sent him to C. V. Ramanfor research soon after Pant completed hisM Sc in 1942. The main reason for keep-ing him away from Banaras was to protect his academic career from the repressive British Government, which came down heavily on the student community in Ba-naras after the Quit India Movement. Pant stayed in Bangalore till 1944 andcarried out experiments on the photocon-ductivity of diamond and luminescenceof uranyl salts. He earned the affection of Raman because of his fearless and in-quisitive temperament, and the latter showed him how to prepare one’s eyes, by sitting in a fully darkened room long enough, to see light emanating from sin-gle photons.Raman knew the difficult financial po-sition of Pant and his family, his Gandhianideals and his intention to be a teacher toserve the cause of nation-building. Since there was paucity of funds for research scholarships at Bangalore, Raman advisedPant to combine his research work along with a teaching job and helped him to get one in Agra. Pant started his teaching ca-reer as a lecturer in physics at Agra College in 1944, visiting BHU to carry out re-search work during vacations. He re-ceived his D Sc from BHU in 1949 andjoined as a professor in physics at R.B.S.College, Agra, where he set up one of the finest teaching laboratories in physics. He joined the D.S.B. College, Nainital asHead of the physics department in 1952 and built a spectroscopy laboratory fromscratch. He started experiments on detec-tion of light emission from uranyl saltsusing a photomultiplier tube and a sensi-tive galvanometer procured from dis-carded military equipment of the Second World War. By the time Pant eventually stopped going to his laboratory due to ill health, it had become an internationally known centre for picosecond fluores-cence decay measurements.Molecular spectrum contains two vital pieces of information about the atomic ormolecular species: in the form of (a) wavelength and (b) intensity of the spec-tral line. Measurements of wavelengthsprovide valuable data about the energylevels, which can be translated into struc-ture of the atom or the molecule. The measurements of intensities of spectral lines provide data on the lifetime of the excited energy states, which can betranslated into the dynamics of the emit-ting species. There was great emphasison the measurements of spectral wave-lengths with higher and higher resolu-tions till 1950, and the three main Indian spectroscopy laboratories at Banaras, Visakhapatnam and Aligarh excelled in high-resolution spectroscopy research. It was perhaps the initial training under Raman that induced Pant to undertake the measurements of the decay of emis-sion from optically excited molecules. He could easily measure lifetimes in the microsecond range with his home-builtequipment at Nainital, and studied alarge number of organic and inorganic molecules in solution phase, obtaining interesting effects of D2O on the lifetimeand the quantum yield. In the community of high-resolution Indian spectroscopists, perhaps Pant did not get the encourage-ment and appreciation that he deserved. I remember his lecture in a Physical Re-search Committee Meeting at BHU in 1963, which I, as a M Sc student, did notunderstand much at that time. At the end of this talk, which obviously related todecay rate of luminescence, Asundi stoodup and asked, ‘Where is spectroscopy in this work?’. Pant tried to explain hispoint with utmost courtesy and respect for his teacher, but Asundi continued re-buking him to the embarrassment of all. It was Savadatti, who had recently re-turned from England after his researchwork in the laboratory of Porter, whomentioned something in support of thetalk to end the discussion. Later in 1965the research work at Nainital found ex-tensive coverage in a book entitled Spec-troscopy and Photochemistry of Uranyl Compounds by Belford and Rabinowitch. As a Fulbright scholar during 1960–61, Pant chose to work at Florida State University with Michael Kasha, the ‘Renaissance man’, who discovered thatphosphorescence emanated from the trip-let states in organic molecules. Duringhis stay in the US, Pant visited many important spectroscopy laboratories inNorth America, including NRC at Ot-tawa, the Mecca of high-resolution spec-troscopy in those days. At the 1982 GordonConference on Molecular ElectronicSpectroscopy at the Brewster Academy, Inoticed a great deal of similarity between Pant and Kasha and the two discussedproblems of nonradiative transitions andenergy transfer in molecules at great length. The advent of short-pulse lasershad made the field of lifetime measure-ments and time-resolved spectroscopy fashionable in India by this time, but Pant had not found it easy to get research funding for the state-of-the-art equip-ment for his laboratory. Pant was a great admirer of Asundiand Raman. He played a key role in the formation of the ‘Laser and SpectroscopySociety of India’ in 1981, as the newavatar of ‘Convention of Spectroscopists’an unregistered academic body initiated by Asundi. He also encouraged his student D. P. Khandelwal to start the ‘Indian Asso-ciation of Physics Teachers’ to strengthenand popularize physics education right from the school level. The cause of phys-ics teaching was very dear to him. Whenthe matter of making cheap helium–neonlasers available for schools was raised bya relatively junior spectroscopist at aConference in IIT Kanpur in mid 1980s, most of the senior members on the panel were annoyed. Pant was the only person who stood up in favour of He–Ne laserand emphasized that quality research in experimental spectroscopy could not be carried out without modernizing ourteaching laboratories. He was straight-forward and never hesitated in puttingforth his honest points of view in anyforum. He did not like indiscriminate import of equipment and took great pains to check the performance of those hepurchased for use in his own laboratory. He even published the data obtained from his laboratory to challenge the claims that the manufactures made about the performance of their instruments.Pant was the principal of D.S.B. Col-lege, Nainital from 1962 to 1971; Direc-tor of Education, Uttar Pradesh during 1971–72; Dean, Faculty of Science, Uni-versity of Agriculture and Technology,Pantnagar during 1972–73 and founderVice-Chancellor of Kumaun Universityfrom 1973 to 1977. He preferred to re-sign from the posts of Director of Educa-tion and Vice-Chancellor rather thanyielding to pressure and compromisingwith his principles. The burden of admin-istrative work never made him lose con-tact with his laboratory and research students. He remained an Emeritus Pro-fessor from 1978 onwards, not only inname, but with his physical presence inthe laboratory till he became bed-ridden due to ill health. I remember spending aweek in the mid 1990s in his laboratory, and it was great pleasure to walk withPant from his residence to the laboratoryalong the mountain path which Pantcould negotiate more comfortably than I, 25 years younger than him. He alwaystalked of research problems in molecular spectroscopy and sometimes lamented about the degradation in the character ofscience managers in our country. He did not give importance to money and lived asimple life. He focused on research and teaching under adverse circumstances. He was kind to younger scientists and met people with a smile.Pant was an extremely modest indi-vidual and never exhibited his scholar-ship. He was a Fellow of the IndianAcademy of Sciences, Bangalore; Sigma Si, USA, and Laser and Spectroscopy Society of India. He was honoured onseveral occasions for his contributions tothe cause of education and public wel-fare. He was recipient of Raman Centen-ary Award as well as Asundi Centenary Award. With his passing away on 11June 2008 in Haldwani, the Indian spec-troscopy community has lost one of itsmost respected members. He was a sym-bol of courage and hope in the most ad-verse conditions. Pant has left behind a large group of students who will carry onhis legacy into the future.
