Jaswant Singh Rawat an Immortal Soldier
« on: May 30, 2011, 07:12:11 AM »
Friends,
I have come across to a fact about Shri Jaswant Singh Rawat of Garhwal rifles who fought bravely against the chinese in
1962 Indo-China War. Rawat remained at his post at an altitude of about 10,000 feet (3,000 meters) and held back advancing Chinese troops for three days single-handedly before succumbing to an enemy bullet during the bloody winter war with China in 1962 along the northeastern state of Arunachal Pradesh.

The rifleman may have died, but his heroics have not gone unrecognised -- Rawat gets an unofficial promotion at regular intervals, with his rank today being that of a major general.

The post that he held to repulse the Chinese troops has been renamed Jaswant Garh in recognition of his courage.

JASWANT SINGH RAWAT

In 1962, when the Chinese Army invaded India from N.E.F.A., a company of Garhwal Rifles was posted somewhere on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. They were ordered to vacate their post as soon as possible, but Jaswant Singh Rawat decided to stay back and for THREE DAYS, he kept the rampaging Chinese at bay almost single-handedly. He was helped by two local girls, Nuang and Sella. When the situation became hopeless and to avoid the humiliation at the hands of the enemy, he shot himself. When the Chinese came to know that the post was defended by a lone soldier, they were so enraged that they cut-off his head and took it away with them. Later, after the war subsided, a Chinese officer heard his story and impressed by his valour, returned his head to the Indian Government and also gave a brass bust in his honor. The brass bust is placed on the spot where he fought so valiantly and the place has been named JaswantGarh. The two girls who helped him were also given due credit and the pass was named after Sella and the highway named after Nuang. (courtesy Anurag Bist)

JASWANT GARH, India, Nov 7, 2002 - Forty years after his death, an Indian army rifleman has been promoted to major general' and is still believed to command' troops guarding the dizzy heights of India's eastern frontiers with China.

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat of the Fourth Garhwal Rifles infantry regiment is the only soldier in the long history of the Indian army who is known to have risen through the ranks after his death.

Rawat's act of bravado has earned him a distinct place among all ranks of the federal army manning the unfenced 1,030 kilometer (650 mile) Sino-Indian border -- for many he is like a guardian angel protecting the frontiers.
Myth, folklore, and superstitious beliefs are so strong among the soldiers that the battle site was converted into a Hindu temple with troops now giving Rawat the status of Baba' or saint.

"Army personnel passing by this route, be it a general or an ordinary soldier, make it a point to pay their respects at the shrine of Jaswant Singh or else they invoke his curse," said footsoldier Ram Narayan Singh.
"A major general once refused to pray at his shrine while crossing the area, saying this was just a superstition, but he met with a mysterious road accident a few kilometers away from here and died."

The Garhwal Rifles are today deployed on India's western borders, but the unit makes it a point to keep at least half-a-dozen personnel here to take care of Rawat as if he were alive.

"For us he is immortal and continues to protect and bless us in this treacherous mountain terrain," said a Garhwal Rifles soldier posted at Rawat's shrine.
He has an orderly who cooks for him daily, makes his bed, irons his clothes and polishes his boots, while guards patrol his shrine around the clock.
"Each morning his bed is found crumpled and his freshly ironed clothes lie crushed on the floor," another soldier said. "He is here all the time although we cannot see him."
According to locals and soldiers posted near Jaswant Garh, Rawat's spirit roams the area and he comes to their dreams and solves their woes and miseries.
"The respect that Rawat commands even after his death is something very rare in the Indian army," Major Jaideep Ghosh told AFP.
"I have never seen anything like this before anywhere of a martyred soldier still influencing the lives of the troops."
Legend has it that the Chinese troops after killing Rawat beheaded him and carried his torso as a trophy after he had stood alone against them, firing from a .303 rifle.
After the ceasefire, the Chinese commander, impressed by Rawat's bravery, returned the head along with a brass bust of the gallant soldier. The bust is now installed at the site of the battle.

"A nation that does not honour its dead warriors will perish," an army commander remarked as soldiers lit earthen lamps at nightfall to keep Rawat's memories alive.

Jaswant Singh Rawat

Friends,
Congratulations for keeping this forum active with posts, my best wishes to all of you. Slowly but steadly you will make a difference. We should broaden the minds of people, we should remove superstitions, and we should be united as uttarakhandis, we should reject anybody who promotes casteism.

Some pics of Jaswant Rawat taken from net. Would you please tell me how to paste pictures in the post itself.

             परन्तु होनी को कौन टाल सकता है. एक लामा ने चीनी सेना के सामने यह रहस्य उद्घाटन कर दिया कि वह भारतीय जवान तो अकेले ही लड़ रहा है. यह सुनते ही चीनी सेना टिड्डी दल की भांति इस गढ़सिंह पर चारों ओर से टूट पडी और प्रतिशोध के पागलपन में इस वीर जवान का सर कलम कर ले गए. चीनी सैनिक इस वीर जवान का सर लेकर अपने देश लौटे कि उससे पहले ही जसवंत की वीरता की कहानी वहां तक पहुँच चुकी थी. चीनी सेना के डिव कमाण्डर ने अपने उन जवानों को बुरी तरह फटकारा और लकड़ी की पेटी में उस सर को रखकर ससम्मान इस अनुशंसा के साथ भेजा कि " इसमें वह वीर जवान सो रहा है जिसने चीन के पूरे डिविजन को 72 घंटे तक आगे बढ़ने से रोके रखा. भारत सरकार बताये कि इस वीर की वीरता को क्या सम्मान दिया गया."   यह भी अजब संयोग रहा कि जिस जसवंत सिंह का नाम भारतीय सेना ने गुमशुदा या भगोडे सैनिकों की सूची में डाल दिया था  वही माँ भारती का सच्चा सपूत निकला.
              ले0 ज0 बी0 एम0 कौल ने अपनी पुस्तक 'अनटोल्ड स्टोरी' में लिखा है कि " " जिस वीरता व साहस से गढ़वाली बटालियन ने चीनियों का मुंहतोड़ जवाब दिया यदि उसी प्रकार भारतीय सेना की अन्य बटालियनें भी, जो वहां पर तैनात थी, प्रयास करती तो नेफा की तस्वीर आज कुछ और ही होती"    वीर जसवंत सिंह रावत के शौर्य से प्रभावित होकर आर्मी हेडक्वार्टर ने 17 नवम्बर को 'नूरानांग दिवस' तथा नूरानांग पहाड़ी को 'जसवंत गढ़' नाम दिया. इसी जसवंतगढ़ में उस वीर सैनिक को आज भी पूरे सम्मान के साथ याद किया जाता है. नूरानांग की पहाड़ियों पर जो लड़ाई हुयी उसमे कुल 162 जवान वीरगति को प्राप्त हुए, 264 कैद कर लिए गए और 256 जवान मौसम की मार से या अन्य कारणों से तितर बितर हो गए. वीरता पुरस्कार से जो सम्मानित हुए वे इस प्रकार हैं  महावीर चक्र - ले0 क0 भट्टाचार्य जी एवं रा0 मै0 जसवंत सिंह रावत (मरणोपरांत), वीर चक्र - से0 ले0 विनोद कुमार गोस्वामी (मरणोपरांत), , सूबेदार उदय सिंह रावत, सूबेदार रतन सिंह गुसाईं, रा0 मै0 मदन सिंह रावत, लैं0 ना0 त्रिलोक सिंह नेगी (मरणोपरांत), लैं0 ना0 गोपाल सिंह गुसाईं (मरणोपरांत), सेना मेडल - नायक रणजीत सिंह गुसाईं आदि..
           पौड़ी गढ़वाल,उत्तराखंड के वीरोंखाल के ग्राम बाडियूं, पट्टी खाटली में गुमान सिंह रावत व लीला देवी के घर ज्येष्ठ पुत्र के रूप में जुलाई 1941 को इस वीर नायक जसवंत का जन्म हुआ. हाईस्कूल करने के बाद वे अगस्त 1960 को फ़ौज में भर्ती हो गए. जसवंत के पूर्वज गढ़वाल की ऐतिहासिक वीरांगना तीलू रौतेली के वंशज माने जाते हैं. जो रावतों में विशेष जाति 'गोर्ला रावत' कहलाते हैं।
                   यह भी सत्य है कि महापुरुषों के सम्बंध में समाज अनेक किवदंतियां गढ़ देता है. वीर जसवंत के विषय में भी कहा जाता है कि नूरानांग पहाड़ी पर तैनाती के दौरान उनका 'सीला' नाम की स्थानीय युवती से प्यार हो गया था. कहा जाता है कि जिन 72 घंटों में जसवंत सिंह संघर्ष कर रहे थे उस समय भी वह युवती साथ थी. भोजन व्यवस्था व हौसला आफजाई वही करती रही. तदोपरांत वह कहाँ गयी, जीवित बची या मारी गयी. कुछ स्पष्ट नहीं है. परन्तु माना जाता है कि नूरानांग पहाड़ियों पर आज "   जागो, जागो ! आ गए, मारो, मारो !"    की जो आवाज कभी कभार सुनाई  देती है वह उसी युवती की है. सत्य ईश्वर ही जान सकता है.
हाँ, राजीव कृष्ण सक्सेना जी  की यह कविता अवश्य याद आती है;
             जुड़ा हूँ अमिट इतिहास से कैसे भुला दूं ?  जो जागृत प्रीत की झंकार वह कैसे भुला दूं ?
          जो घुट्टी संग भारतवर्ष की ममता मिली थी. उसे कैसे भुला कर आज माँ तुझसे विदा लूं ?

Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat was an Indian soldier who won the Mahavir Chakra Bravery Award.

It was the final phase of the Sino-Indian War in November 1962. Even as his company was asked to fall back, Jaswant Singh remained at his post at an altitude of 10,000 feet and held back Chinese soldiers for three days single-handedly. It is presumed that he shot himself when he realized that he was about to be captured. It is alleged that the Chinese cut off Jaswant Singh's head and took it back to China. However, after the ceasefire, the Chinese commander, impressed by the soldier's bravery, returned the head along with a brass bust of Jaswant Singh. The bust, created in China to honor the brave Indian soldier, is now installed at the site of the battle, a location now known as Jaswantgarh. Jaswant Singh's saga of valor and sacrifice continues to serve as an inspiration to all army personnel posted in this sector.

Army personnel passing by this route, be it a general or a jawan, make it a point to pay their respects here. Jaswant, who was awarded a Mahavir Chakra for his bravery is not the only soldier to be honored thus. There are several memorials built along the way. One of them in fact is right on the border at Bumla honoring Subedar Joginder Singh who won a posthumous Param Vir Chakra for his bravery.

Jaswant Singh     Much has been written about Tawang, the Switzerland of North East India over the years by travellers and others, but not that much has been written about Jaswant Garh, a war memorial at Nuranang in Tawang District of Arunachal Pradesh, which stands in memory of 4039009 Rifleman Jaswant Singh Rawat, Mahavir Chakra awardee (posthumous) of the 4th Battalion of Garhwal Rifles Infantry Regiment, who showed his valour by fighting and holding the invading Chinese back for 72 hours all alone during the 1962 aggression, and remained at his post at an altitude of about 10,000 feet (3,000 metres), before succumbing to an enemy bullet during that bloody winter war. The post that he held to repulse the Chinese troops has been renamed Jaswant Garh in recognition of his valour and sacrifice.

Ever since I heard about this memorial-cum-mandir, a wish to visit this place always filled my mind and it was fulfilled recently, when I, along with four other friends, left for Tawang via Tezpur on a chilly morning. We reached Jaswant Garh at around four in the evening. We planned to visit this shrine on the way itself, but it was such a foggy evening that even the gate of Jaswant Garh was not visible from a near distance. We immediately changed our plan to visit the memorial then, on the advice of our driver, because the weather was deteriorating and we had to reach Tawang, which was another two hours of hilly journey from there.

The weather was pleasant during our return trip. It was bright, along with a cold breeze. We reached Jaswant Garh at around 11 in the morning. Before entering the Garh, we had coffee at a roadside canteen run by the Army itself for visitors and passersby on this route. We were totally silent when we entered the Garh that still keeps the memory alive of this brave son of Mother India. It may be mentioned here that Jaswant Singh Rawat is the only soldier in the long history of the Indian army, who is known to have risen through the ranks after his death, and this rifleman has been promoted to Major General, and is still believed to command troops guarding the dizzy heights of India's eastern frontiers with China. He also gets his leave, salary – everything that a living soldier gets. During my visit, I was surprised to see a Leave Certificate hanging on the notice board issued by his commanding officer for ten days casual leave to attend a marriage ceremony of one Yoginder Yadav from November 5, 2008 to November 14, 2008. I asked the caretaker how the procedure is actually carried out. He replied that Jaswant Singh's family members apply for leave on his behalf whenever needed, and if the leave is granted, the army men carry his portrait is to his native village with full military honours and when his leave expires, again his portrait is brought back to its original place. What an honour!!!

The Garhwal Rifles are today deployed on India's western borders, but the unit makes it a point to keep at least half-a-dozen personnel here to take care of Rawat as if he were alive. He is served bed tea at 4.30am, breakfast at 9 am, and dinner at 7pm. Five Army soldiers are at his service round-the-clock. There are no chores to be done. Life couldn't be more comfortable for ‘Baba' Jaswant Singh Rawat, but for the fact that he is no more.

It was the final phase of the Sino-Indian War in November, 1962. A company of Garhwal Rifles was posted somewhere on the Assam-Arunachal Pradesh border. They were ordered to vacate their post as soon as possible. But even as his company was asked to fall back, Jaswant Singh remained at his post at an altitude of 10,000 feet, and held back the invading Chinese for three days single-handedly. It is presumed that he shot himself when he realised that he was about to be captured. It is alleged that the Chinese cut off Jaswant Singh's head and took it back to China. However, after the ceasefire, the Chinese commander, impressed by the soldier's bravery, returned the head along with a brass bust of Jaswant Singh. The bust, created in China to honour the brave Indian soldier, is now installed at the site of the battle, a location now known as Jaswant Garh. Jaswant Singh's saga of valour and sacrifice continues to serve as an inspiration to all army personnel posted in this sector. It is a fact that he alone killed more than 300 Chinese soldiers in the war. He was assisted by two girls of the local village named Nura and Sella, and they were also given due credit, and the pass was named after Sella, and the highway named after Nura. It is still believed that the soul of this martyr still protects the whole of West Kameng from Chinese attacks.

Myths, folklore and superstitious beliefs are also strong among the soldiers. "Army personnel passing by this route, be it a General or an ordinary soldier, make it a point to pay their respects at the shrine of Jaswant Singh, or else they invoke his curse," says a soldier. A Major General once refused to pray at his shrine while crossing the area, saying this was just a superstition, but he met with a mysterious road accident a few kilometres away from here and died.

The caretaker of this historical memorial also revealed a few surprising facts. He reveals that Jaswant Singh Baba has an orderly who cooks for him daily, makes his bed, irons his clothes and polishes his boots, while guards patrol his shrine around the clock. Each morning, his bed is found crumpled, and his freshly ironed clothes lie scattered on the floor. The army men posted over there believe that Jaswant Singh is still here all the time, although no one can see him. According to locals and soldiers posted near Jaswant Garh, Rawat's spirit roams the area, and he comes in their dreams and solves their problems.

It was really a nostalgic moment for all of us as we had never encountered such a heroic saga of someone who had made the supreme sacrifice to protect the motherland. It is only because of these brave warriors in the border that we sleep peacefully. Time will pass by, but the memories of those two hours spent at Jaswant Garh will always remain fresh in my mind in the days to come.
