MANISH PANDEY

Manish Pandey is a right-hand middle-order batsman who was part of India's Under-19 squad that won the World Cup in Malaysia in 2008. He didn't get many opportunities to bat during the tournament because of India's strong top-order but impressed with his attacking stroke-play and athletic fielding. His favourite batsman is Matthew Hayden, whom he admires for his confidence at the crease. Pandey would like to join the army, like his father, if he is unable to become a professional cricketer.

Pretoria: Young Manish Pandey notched up his maiden Indian Premier League (IPL) century as the Royal Challengers Bangalore defeated the Deccan Chargers by 12 runs in a high-scoring match here Thursday to set up a semi-final clash against the Chennai Super Kings.

Opting to bat first, the Royal Challengers rode on Pandey’s blistering 73-ball 114 to post a competitive 170 for four before restricting the Deccan Chargers to 158 for six.

By virtue of the victory, the Royal Challengers moved to the third spot in the table with 16 points and will take on the second-placed Chennai Super Kings in the second semi-final on Saturday. The Deccan Chargers will be up against the mighty Delhi DareDevils in the first last-four match on Friday.

Chasing 171 for victory, Adam Gilchrist and Herschelle Gibbs got the Deccan Chargers off to a rollicking start, scoring 64 runs in the first six overs.

Both openers were in a murderous mood, especially Gibbs, as he dispatched Praveen Kumar for back-to-back sixes and a four to score 22 runs in the fifth over.

Fellow country-mate Roelof van ver Merwe too came in Gibbs’ firing line as he hit the left-arm spinner for two sixes — first over mid-wicket and then over long-off in the next over.

But a clever bowling change from skipper Anil Kumble (two for 23) in the seventh over — bringing in Balachandra Akhil (two for 18) — did the trick, with Gilchrist (15 off 18) top-edging a pull to give a simple catch to Van der Merwe.

Needing 33 of the last two overs, Kumble drove the final nail in Chargers’ coffin, picking up the dangerous Rohit Sharma (12 off 12).

In spite of the defeat, the Chargers progressed to the semi-finals, courtesy a better net run rate than the Kings XI Punjab.

Earlier, Pandey proved the saying ‘fortune favours the brave’ true as he latched on to the life provided by RP Singh when he was on two and struck 10 fours and four sixes en route his blistering 73-ball 114-run innings, the second century in this edition of the IPL.

The 19-year-old stitched a crucial 55-run partnership with Van der Merwe (23 off 18) for the first wicket to set the platform for the big score after Kumble won the toss and elected to bat.

The Royal Challengers were dealt an early blow when Jacques Kaliis gave a simple catch to T. Suman at square leg off the bowling off RP Singh in the innings’ second over.

The Bangalore side could have been in further trouble in the very next over had RP not dropped Pandey off Harris at third man.

When you ask 18-year-old Manish Pandey what it felt like to win the Under-19 Cricket World Cup, he answers: “Just the fact that I was chosen for the Cup was exciting. Winning was great.”

Pandey, though originally hailing from Nainital in Uttarakhand, has been a resident of Bangalore on and off since the last eight years and has moved to the city permanently three years back. Pandey’s father is in the armed forces, and he has lived in various cities all over the country before he came to Bangalore to train in cricket, “because my father wanted me to be a cricketer.”

And quite a cricketer he has become. Currently chosen to play for the Mumbai IPL team under the captaincy of Sachin Tendulkar, Pandey says he would like to give his best to the game. Till then he’s riding high on his World Cup success where he made two half centuries and a 30 not out.

Manish Pandey, the Royal Challengers batsman who on Thursday became the first Indian to hit an IPL century, has said it was the faith shown in him by captain Anil Kumble and coach Ray Jennings that helped him come good.
"In the team meeting Kumble told me that I would open the innings. He said the track looked good and no matter how badly I played I would still score good runs," he told the IPL's official website after his unbeaten 114 against Deccan Chargers sealed Bangalore's place in the semi-finals. "Jennings told me to play my natural game. He told me not to fear failure and to have fun in the centre."
The match against Deccan was the first substantial chance for Pandey to showcase his talent, after barely getting any time in the middle in his previous two games this season. "It is just the part of the game that sometime you get a chance to play and sometimes you don't. Thankfully today I got my chance and I think I did well."
Pandey, a member of the Under-19 World Cup-winning side of 2008, was dropped on 2 by RP Singh and capitalised on the opportunity to go on make only the second hundred of the season. "It is amazing. I just thought I would back myself today," he said. "And it worked. I realised only when I reached 87 that I could make a century here."
Originally from Nainital, Pandey has been a fixture in the Bangalore cricketing circles as his father was posted in the city by the Army. Following in his father's footsteps and joining the army had initially been a back-up plan for Pandey in case he couldn't make it as a professional cricketer. "I think the plan has changed now. I just had an option that if cricket would not work for me then I would join the Army." One of Bangalore's main problems this season has been an inconsistent batting line-up and the emergence of Pandey bodes well for the big games

Manish Pandey will always be remembered as the first Indian to score a century in the IPL. In one night, the 19-year-old went from being Karnataka's next big Ranji hope to entering the record books as he hit his way to the highest Twenty20 score by an Indian. That century also probably meant he wouldn't have to carry out his intention of following his father into the army if he didn't make it as a professional cricketer. His batting anyway is not built on military discipline; Pandey has always been a free-scoring aggressive middle-order batsman and an athletic fielder.

His trademark half-sweep-half-flick - where he shapes to go for the sweep but just stretches towards the ball and flicks it, mostly towards midwicket - was quite the talk of the junior circles in Bangalore. That shot was on ample display when he scored two half-centuries in his first two Ranji Trophy matches, in the 2008-09 season. He came to Bangalore when he was 15 and stayed back when his father was transferred to Rajasthan three years later.

In those three years Pandey came to be well-regarded in the KSCA league, represented Karnataka at the Under-17 and Under-19 levels, and was always marked for a Ranji cap. He also represented India in the U-19 World Cup in 2008, though he didn't get many chances in that winning side.

Manish Pandey comes of age

(22 May 2009, 0028 hrs IST, Times of India)

BANGALORE: Before his pyrotechnics against Team Hyderabad on Thursday, wherein he registered the first IPL century by an Indian and the second of
this edition, Manish Pandey’s claim to fame was mostly confined to his participation in the victorious U-19 World Cup campaign in Kuala Lumpur two years back.

The KL campaign got him a berth in the inaugural IPL where he wore the colours of Mumbai Indians and returned home with fond memories of fruitful interaction with his seniors, including Sachin Tendulkar. Pandey, who has made Bangalore his home in pursuit of cricketing excellence, originally hails from Nainital, Uttarakhand.

The 20-year-old has played in the city since his school days, thanks to his father GS Pandey, an Army man who wanted his son to make it big on the cricket field.

Pandey made his first class debut for Karnataka last season and his scores did not do full justice to his potential. Two half-centuries in the debut season was definitely an under-achievement.

Aggression is part and parcel of Pandey’s batting and T20 suits him well but it is his sound defensive technique and wide repertoire of strokes that has made him the next big hope from Karnataka. Add agile fielding to that and you have a complete package.

Looking for redemption after a disappointing Season One, Pandey was an automatic choice for Royal Challengers with his attacking instincts serving him well. He had to bide his time to get a look-in but now, there may be no looking back

I hope he will remember that he is from uttarakhand even when he becomes famous (in his glory days), Otherwise we people will keep on harping that he is from uttarakhand as we do in the case of M.S.Dhoni whereas he himself will not remember it, I don't think after becoming star dhoni has even once visited Almora or associated himself with Uttarakhand in any forums / Interviews ( I am apologetic if my information is incomplete)

All the best to Manish Pandey....

Jay Bharat , Jay Uttarakhand
