RUSKIN BOND : उत्तराखण्ड का प्रेमी अंग्रेज

Ruskin Bond (19 May 1934 -) is an Indian author of British descent. He was born in Kasauli (Himachal Pradesh) and has lived in Landour since the 1960s, having previously also lived, as a child and young man, in Shimla, Jamnagar, Mussoorie, Dehradun, and London. Most of his writings show a strong influence from the social life in the hill stations at foothills of the Himalayas, where he spent his childhood. He is considered to be an icon among Indian writers and children's authors. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 for contributions to children's literature.

An icon of Indian literature
As a writer, he is as productive as ever in his early seventies, and gets many of his ideas by reminiscing while gazing out of the windows of his apartment towards the Lower Western Himalaya, the Pauri Hills and the Doon Valley from his perch atop Mullingar Hill in Landour Cantonment. He can always reach into his rich life experience, especially his childhood and early adulthood, for yet another story line or another evocative character.

Over the course of a writing career spanning forty years, he has written over a hundred short stories, essays, novels, and more than thirty books for children.

The Room On The Roof was his first novel, written when he was seventeen and it received the John Llewellyn Rhys Memorial prize in 1957. Vagrants In The Valley was also written in his teens and picked up from where The Room On The Roof left off. These two novellas were published in one volume by Penguin India in 1993 as was a much-acclaimed collection of his non-fiction writing, Rain In The Mountains, Delhi Is Not Far : The Best Of Ruskin Bond was published by Penguin India the following year.

Ruskin Bond received the Sahitya Akademi Award for English writing in India for 1992, for Our Trees Still Grow In Dehra. Of his autobiography, Scenes from a Writer's Life, published in 1997, V.S. Naipaul said: "I have read nothing like that from India or anywhere else. It's very simple. Everything is underplayed, and the truths of the book come rather slowly at you. He is writing about solitude, tremendous solitude. He himself doesn't say it. He leaves it all to you to pick up. I haven't read another book about solitude from India. In a way, from this great Subcontinent so full of people, to write a book about solitude is quite an achievement."

His interest in the paranormal led him to write popular titles like 'Ghost Stories from the Raj', 'A Season of Ghosts', 'A Face in the dark and other hauntings' and more...5 novels, 73 short stories, 10 essays, 6 travel writings, 10 songs and poems.

A tv series based on his stories was adapted into a popular serial "ek tha rusty" (once there was rusty )on doordarshan . Recently one of Ruskin Bond’s short stories has been adapted by Vishal Bharadwaj into a Bollywood movie called The Blue Umbrella (2005) (also credited as Chatri Chor) directed by Vishal Bharadwaj. Bond’s story, A Flight of Pigeons, set in pre-independence India was also made into a movie, Junoon (1978) by director Shyam Benegal

RONALD ROSS : BORN IN ALMORA

Sir Ronald Ross KCB, (13 May 1857 – 16 September 1932) was a Scottish physician. He was born in Almora, India as the son of General Sir Campbell Claye Grant Ross of the Indian Army.

Prior to joining the Indian Medical Service in 1881, Ross completed his study of medicine at St. Bartholomew's Hospital in London in 1875 and qualified as MRCS and LSA.

He studied malaria between 1881 and 1899. He worked on malaria in Calcutta at the Presidency General Hospital. In 1883, Ross was posted as the Acting Garrison Surgeon at Bangalore during which time he noticed the possibility of controlling mosquitoes by controlling their access to water. In 1897 Ross was posted in Ootacamund and fell ill with malaria. After this he was transferred to Secunderabad, he discovered the presence of the malarial parasite within a specific species of mosquito, the Anopheles. He initially called them dapple-wings and he was able to find the malaria parasite in a mosquito that he artificially fed on a malaria patient named Hussain Khan. Later using birds that were sick with malaria, he was soon able to ascertain the entire life cycle of the malarial parasite, including its presence in the mosquito's salivary glands. He demonstrated that malaria is transmitted from infected birds to healthy ones by the bite of a mosquito, a finding that suggested the disease's mode of transmission to humans. In 1902 Ross was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his remarkable work on malaria.

In 1899 Ross went back to Britain and joined Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine as a professor of tropical medicine. In 1901 Ross was elected a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and also a Fellow of the Royal Society, of which he became Vice-President from 1911 to 1913. In 1902 he was appointed a Companion of the Most Honourable Order of Bath by King Edward VII. In 1911 he was elevated to the rank of Knight Commander of the same Order.

During his active career Ross advocated the task of prevention of malaria in different countries. He carried out surveys and initiated schemes in many places, including West Africa, the Suez Canal zone, Greece, Mauritius, Cyprus, and in the areas affected by the First World War. He also initiated organizations, which have proved to be well established, for the prevention of malaria within the planting industries of India and Ceylon. He made many contributions to the epidemiology of malaria and to methods of its survey and assessment, but perhaps his greatest was the development of mathematical models for the study of its epidemiology, initiated in his report on Mauritius in 1908, elaborated in his Prevention of malaria in 1911 and further elaborated in a more generalized form in scientific papers published by the Royal Society in 1915 and 1916. These papers represented a profound mathematical interest which was not confined to epidemiology, but led him to make material contributions to both pure and applied mathematics.

Through these works Ross continued his great contribution in the form of the discovery of the transmission of malaria by the mosquito, but he also found time and mental energy for many other pursuits, being poet, playwright, writer and painter. Particularly, his poetic works gained him wide acclamation which was independent of his medical and mathematical standing.

Sir Ronald Ross received many honours in addition to the Nobel Prize, and was given Honorary Membership of learned societies of most countries of Europe, and of many other continents. He got an honorary M.D. degree in Stockholm in 1910 at the centenary celebration of the Caroline Institute and his 1923 autobiography Memoirs, Etc. was awarded that year's James Tait Black Memorial Prize. Whilst his vivacity and single-minded search for truth caused friction with some people, he enjoyed a vast circle of friends in Europe, Asia and the United States who respected him for his personality as well as for his genius.

Ross married Rosa Bessie Bloxam in 1889. They had two sons, Ronald and Charles, and two daughters, Dorothy and Sylvia. His wife died in 1931. Ross survived her until a year later, when he died after a long illness, at the Ross Institute, London, in 1932.

In India Sir Ronald Ross is remembered with great respect. Because of his relentless work on malaria, the deadly epidemic which used to claim thousands of lives every year could be successfully controlled. There are roads named after him in many Indian towns and cities. In Calcutta the road linking Presidency General Hospital with Kidderpore Road has been renamed after him as Sir Ronald Ross Sarani. Earlier this road was known as Hospital Road.

Mohan Bhandari

The extremely talented and natural actor Mohan Bhandari appears as the lovable father in one of the most popular shows on Zee Television titled `Saat Phere`. His appearance as the strict father of the female protagonist of the soap Saloni has earned him rave reviews. After being out of action for a considerable span he claims that he is very much excited to play this role as after a long time he has got a character which has loads of substance in it. His character in this essay is that of a father who is against dowry and also as an individual whose daughter has a tough time getting a groom because she is dark-skinned.

This talented actor had left his officer`s job with State Bank of India in the year 1996 to pursue his interest in acting. He also suffered from a brain hemorrhage and had quite a tough time in his life at that point of time. After he made his comeback into the acting circuit he saw that suddenly women oriented serials had sprung up from everywhere. He went to Manish Goswami and did a few pilots with UTV and Cinevistaas. He also did a pilot with the producer of `Saat Phere` Sunjoy Wadhwa.

There was a time when six shows of Mohan Bhandari including `Karz`, `Parampara`, `Jeevan Mrityu`, `Pathjhad`, `Gumraah` and `Mile Sur Mera Tumhara`. This great actor was also seen in the recent Bollwyood historical blockbuster `Mangal Pandey-The Rising`. He was also seen lately in a significant in the much popular soap `Kittie Party`. He claims that `Saat Phere` is a fresh lease of life for him and he hopes that the small screen audiences will appreciate his work like they have done before. He also does not have any complains regarding his pay package.

On his personal front also Mohan Bhandari is a very happy and contented individual. His son Dhruv Bhandari is all set to make his acting debut with Manish Goswami`s `Sixxerr`. His role is that of a successful cricketer in this show. In a recent interview he claimed that he is doing the show mainly because it has a cricket backdrop. He shares a very good bond with Manish Goswami who did his first show `Parampara` with his father Mohan Bhandari. He asserted in a recent interview that his father had done justice to all the roles that had been meted out to him so far.

He has been a wonderful actor throughout his profession and never got into any controversies. His huge fan following has not only accepted him well but has also respected his work. Even today Mohan Bhandari is very much respected and loved on the sets of `Saat Phere`. His fans expect that a great actor like him will continue to delight the audiences in a similar way in the years to come and he also promises to live upto their expectations.

Sundarlal Bahuguna

Sundarlal Bahuguna is a noted activist and philosopher in the tradition of Mahatma Gandhi and an environmentalist who has fought for the preservation of forests in the Himalayas as a member of the Chipko movement. This movement is famous for Appiko in Karnataka it means hug. One of his notable contributions to that cause, and environmentalism in general, was his creation of the Chipko slogan "ecology is permanent economy". He helped bring the movement to prominence through a 5,000 kilometer trans-Himalaya march conducted from 1981 to 1983, and Met with the then Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. That meeting is credited with resulting in Ms. Gandhi's subsequent green-felling ban.

Sundarlal Bahuguna has been a passionate defender of the Himalaya peoples, working for temperance, the plight of the hill peoples (especially the working women), opposing the Tehri dam project for years, although construction and flooding are nearly completed. He has also struggled to defend India's rivers.
