India's U-19 captain Unmukt Chand said that they are a promising side and are confident of doing well in the tournament

Visakhapatnam: Sep 27, 2011

India's under-19 captain Unmukt Chand exuded confidence that his team will do whatever it takes to win the quadrangular series.

"We are a promising side. The team has undergone two weeks rigorous training at Bangalore. We are confident of doing well in the tournament," he said, addressing a press conference.

"It's a great opportunity for me to lead the side," the Delhi player said.

India, Sri Lanka, West Indies and Australia will clash for supremacy in the one-day series to be played from September 27 to October 9.

Indian U-19 coach Bharat Arun said the four-nation series will give a good exposure to players and help them to prepare for the World Cup next year.

"The team has a good combination of bowlers and batsmen," said Arun, adding that BCCI is doing a good job in conducting junior cricket tournaments in the country.

Sri Lanka's coach Mohamed Naveed also expressed confidence that his team will perform well in the tournament.

"The boys have undergone rigorous training for the last four months. Also, five of our players had participated in the international matches recently," he said.

Manager of the West Indies team Courtney Walsh said, "Our main focus will be on the World Cup next year. This tournament will help us in our preparations."

Captain of the Australian team Cameron Bancroft said the players are fully fit and raring to go.

Team Manager Brain McFadyen and Head Coach David Fitzgerald said they have a balanced team composition.

"Our strength is bowling, but the team also has good batsmen," they said.

India will play against Australia at Golden Jubilee Port Stadium, while West Indies will clash with Sri Lanka at ACA-VDCA Stadium at Pothinamalliahpalem.(PTI)

Learning to juggle all formats, says young Unmukt

Wearing the blue India jersey be it at U—19 level is an experience worth cherishing, and for Unmukt Chand, leading the team to victory is like an “icing on the cake.”
“Once you wear that India jersey and win a tournament, it obviously makes you feel proud. In my short career, obviously this is the most memorable experience,” the 18—year old Unmukt told PTI from Visakhapatnam after India colts beat Sri Lanka in low—scoring final.
Those who have watched Unmukt score 151 on a seaming track against a seasoned Railways attack in last year’s Ranji Trophy swear by his talent. In fact, he scored 400 runs for Delhi in five Ranji matches.
“I am learning the tricks of the trade to successfully juggle in all three formats. That’s the demand of the hour.
Playing first—class cricket is a different challenge altogether but at the U—19’s you are competing with your contemporaries. You can’t let the intensity level drop,” the first year student of St Stephen’s college said.
Unmukt will now switch to the T20 format where he will be playing the North Zone leg for Delhi at Lahli but the youngster is certainly eyeing to emulate his senior statemate Virat Kohli who led India to U—19 World Cup triumph back in 2008.
“Our U—19 batch has been playing together in NCA for the past two years. We will have the Asia Cup in Sri Lanka in December followed by a tour of Australia before the World Cup.
Hopefully, we would be ready by then,” he signed off.

Unmukt leads Indian U-19 team to tournament triumph in Australia

NEW DELHI: Since Delhi boy  Unmukt Chand was made captain of India's under-19 team last year, he invited comparisons with Virat Kohli. By winning the quadrangular series in  Australia on Sunday to go with another triumph last year in another four-team competition at home, Unmukt is following in the footsteps of Virat, under whom India won the U-19 world cup.

Unmukt underlined why he is seen as a special talent with an unbeaten 112 in the final. The Australian attack boasted of pace sensation  Pat Cummins as too, but India completed a seven-wicket victory with the team chasing down 195. The ton came after Unmukt scored a match-winning 92 against England in the semifinal.

But as Unmukt would tell you, India were lucky to even play the semifinal, thanks to the rather bizarre rules of the event. India got a chance to play in the semifinal and beyond despite losing all three league games against New Zealand, Australia and England respectively.

Having bounced back from a torrid start, the team now has some confidence ahead of the  U-19 World Cup slated for August this year at the same venues in Queensland.

"We didn't know what was happening in those conditions when we landed there. It's pleasing to bounce back the way did. We will be much better prepared when we come back to play the World Cup here," said the skipper, who gave away his opening slot to bat at No.3. "After the first match when we were dismissed for 123, we thought we needed to lengthen our batting line-up," Unmukt told TOI from Australia. He, however, was quick to point that the move down the order was just for this tournament.

Unmukt struck nine fours and six sixes during his 127-ball knock, as India won with more than seven overs to spare. India chose to field after winning the toss and, thanks to Sandeep Sharma's four-wicket haul, restricted the hosts to 194 for nine in the 50 overs. Harmeet Singh took two for 33.

Unmukt might not have had the best of domestic seasons going into the tournament, having failed to score a single ton, but he credits his exposure in first-class cricket for his exploits at the U-19 level.

"Having played bowlers of higher caliber helps. I knew I had the experience and had to take more responsibility. The hundred in the final is the icing on the cake," said Chand.

Heading his priority list now is the  IPL, in which he is playing for Team Delhi. "The  U-19 Asia Cup and the World Cup are a fair time away. Now I will look to get into T20 mode," said Unmukt, who joins Team Delhi on April 18.
