, to distract the great sage Vishwamitra from his deep meditations. She succeeded, and bore a child by him. Vishwamitra, angered by the loss of the virtue gained through his many hard years of strict ascetism, distanced himself from the child and mother to return to his work. Realizing that she could not leave the child with him, and having to return to the heavenly realms, Menaka left the newborn Shakuntala in the forest. It was here that the new born child was found by Kanva Rishi surrounded by birds. He thus named her Shakuntla. Kanva Rishi took the child to his ashram, which was known as "Kanva Ashram" on the banks of the Malini River which rises in the Shivalik hills of Himalayas and lies about 10 km from the town of Kotdwara in the state of Uttarakhand, India. This fact is corroborated by Kalidas in his famous epic Abhighyan Shankuntalam in which he has described the ashram of the Kanva Rishi on the banks of river Malini.

LOHAGHAT : ऋषियों ने सतयुग में तपस्या कर भोलेशंकर भगवान् को प्रसन्न किया
चम्पावत से तकरीबन १२ किलो मीटर की दूरी पर लोहाघाट नगर स्थित है| चम्पावत से लोहाघाट आने पर ऋषे श्वर महादेव का अनुपम देवालय पर्यटकों का मन मोह लेता है |देव शिव शंकर की यह तपस्थली चारो दिशाओ से देवदार के सघन वनों से भरी पड़ी है| ऐसा माना जाता है की यहाँ पर सप्त ऋषियों ने सतयुग में तपस्या कर भोलेशंकर भगवान् को प्रसन्न किया था |तब शिव शंकर यहाँ प्रकट हुए थे , तभी से लोगो में इसके प्रति आस्था बनीं हुई है |जन शुत्रियो के अनुसार यह भी माना जाता है , यहाँ पर शिव शंकर भगवान् अपने अपने भक्त बाणासुर की रक्षा करने को प्रकट हुए थे और यहीं पर उन्होंने बाणासुर को अपराजेय होने का वर दिया था जो आगे चलकर उसके लिए कई बार लाभकारी साबित हुआ| शिव से अजेय वर पाकर बाणासुर अपने को अपराजेय समझने लगा था|
