  Perched atop a 20 metre high rock, the temple of Dhari Devi is situated on the banks of river Alaknada. One has to travel a distance of 15 kms. from Srinagar (Pauri Garhwal) on Srinagar-Badrinath highway upto Kaliya Saur, then down trek another half a kilometer towards Alaknanda river.
 
  According to a local legened, the temple was once washed off by floods, while floating the idol struck against a rock, the villagers heard the cries of the idol. On reaching the site they heard a divine voice instructing them to install the idol as it was, on the spot it was found. Since then the fierce looking idol remains where it was, known as Dhari Devi, under the open sky, and thousands of devotees on the way to Badrinath pay their obeisance to it. .
  The temple of Dhari Devi in Srinagar hosts only the upper part of idol of Godess Dhari, the remaining lower part is believed to be in Kalimath in Rudraprayag district. It is believed that the idol of Dhari Devi shall not be put under roof. For the same reason, the idols in Dhari Devi Temple are put under open sky. Taking photographs of Dhari Devi idols is strictly prohibited. The village near the temple is name after godess Dhari and known as Dhari Village. A hanging bridge over Alaknanda river connects the Dhari Devi temple to Dhari Village.

There was a issue of Constructing Dam over the Alaknanda River due to which, there was a possibility of shifting this histroical temple. Finally, it was decided that the temple will not be shifted after the strike by Uma Bharti.

In a fresh setback to infrastructure major GVK, Uttarakhand Chief Minsiter Ramesh Pokhriyal today said the Dhari Devi temple will not be shifted from the site of its 330 Mw Alaknanda project.

This assurance was given by Nishank to fasting former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti, who was sitting on fast at Haridwar since May 9, top officials here said.

After the assurance, Bharati broke her 9-day old fast after taking a glass of juice from Nishank. GVK had been trying to shift the Dhari Devi temple from its original site near Srinagar town where the project is coming up at the river Alaknanda, a major tributary of Ganga, for enhancing the project’s capacity from 200 Mw to 330 Mw.

Last month, the Uttarakhand High Court had directed the Alaknanda Hydropower Company Ltd (HPCL), a GVK company which is construcing the project, to seek fresh environment clearance from the Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF).

The lastest assurance had given a big setback to GVK’s efforts to complete the project by December this year. GVK was given the task of completion of the Alaknanda project in 2006 after its construction remained suspended for nearly 20 years due to financial crunch and various other factors.

Bharti was opposing the project stating that the temple will get submerged into the reservoir of the dam. Since the Chief Minister intends to contest assembly election from Srinagar constituency, the issue had taken a political dimension with a section of BJP leaders also jumping into the issue.

Alaknanda river near dhari devi mandir

पुजारी मानता है कि भगवती काली जो हजारों को शक्ति प्रदान करती है, वह लोगों से अपने बचाव के लिये सहायता नहीं मांग सकती थी। पर वह मानता है कि वर्ष 1980 की बाढ़ में प्राचीन मूर्ति खो गयी तथा पांच-छ: वर्षों बाद तैराकों द्वारा नदी से मूर्ति को खोज निकाला गया। इस अल्पावधि में एक अन्य प्रतिमा स्थापित हुई, तथा अब मूल प्रतिमा को पुनर्स्थापित किया गया है।

 आज देवी की प्राचीन प्रतिमा के चारों ओर एक छोटा मंदिर चट्टान पर स्थित है। प्राचीन देवी की मूर्त्ति के इर्द-गिर्द चट्टान पर एक छोटा मंदिर स्थित है। देवी की आराधना भक्तों द्वारा अर्पित 50,000 घंटियों से की जाती है। अलकनंदा के किनारे कई गुफाएं पास ही हैं।
