Kedarkhand: A Collector’s Book for Every Uttarakhandi Family

(Review of Kedarkhand (Dharm, Sanskriti, Vastushilp evam Paryatan) by Hema Uniyal)

                                         Review by Bhishma Kukreti

Kedarkhand a book by famous temple of Uttarakhand scholar Dr. Hema Uniyal is one of the books that every Uttarakhandi book should have in their library. The Kedarnath book by eminent Uttarakhand Architecture expert Dr. Uniyal takes you a journey of temples, important places, brief historical aspects of religious places of all districts of Garhwal including Garhwal region. Before, writing this book, Hema published ‘Kumaon ke Prasidh Mandir’.
Hema Uniyal did not write descriptions by just reading the books from other scholar’s writing but she visited each and every religious place she described in this book. Therefore this book is firsthand knowledge by Uniyal about spiritual and tourist world of Garhwal region.
Hema starts her book by historical period of Garhwal and provides main important characteristics of culture of Garhwal (including Haridwar).
When the readers come to the chapter of Haridwar district they get all information about temples and religious places as Akhada etc and the readers get all images of religious places of Haridwar.
The readers get information about known and unknown temples, religious places of Dehradun including Jaunsar and Ravai region in the chapter of Janpad Dehradun ke Pramukh Mandir va darshniya Sthal.
Pauri Garhwal  is not perceived a region for temples and religious places. By reading the book Kedarkhand, readers come to know less heard but very important and old temples of Pauri Garhwal.

Tehri Garhwal, Uttarkashi, Chamoli Garhwal and Rudraprayag districts are known for various temples and religious, spiritual places. In separate chapter for each district, Hema tells the readers about not only well known religious places but also those spiritual places to those seldom described by tourist guides. Hema tries to provide folk beliefs about each temple and also provides the priest family descriptions of temples. The author tries to provide necessary information about festivals and fairs related to temples and religious beliefs of each region.
Dr Hema Uniyal adequate provides information about most of the folk deities and goddess of Garhwal.
Dr Hema Uniyal did not forget to analyze the science of Architecture and science of religious Images of Garhwal region in separate chapters. These two chapters are gems for Garhwal architecture and temple science.
The book is also very important from tourist’s point of view as the learned author provides other important information to readers those are needful to tourists as boarding and lodging facilities in remote and less known spiritual places.
The book has photographs of all temples described in the book barring exception for a couple of temples. There are geographical and religious activities photographs of many important places in the book those enhance the reader’s engagement for the book.
The book reveals many unknown about spiritual world of Garhwal. This author was amazed o know that Rawat families of Mudi Kheda are in charge of Bhuwaneshari temple near Neelkhanth and they get Chadhava (donation) offered to temples by devotees .
The author has problems while writing such books. Either the book becomes serious due to religious stories and architectural detailing or become a tourist guide. Hema is successful in keeping appropriate balance.
Every Uttarakhandi would congratulate Hema Uniyal for her marvelous research and writing works on temples, religious and spiritual places of Garhwal with such vigor and in simple Hindi language.
Every Uttarakhandi family should buy the book.

Garhwali Folk Story about Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple (Udaipur Patti, Pauri Garhwal)

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -67

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

(Reference: Hema Uniyal, 2011, Kedarkhand, Taxshila Prakashan, New Delhi, India, page 92)

The Garhwali folk story behind Yamkeshwar Temple is amazing
Yamkeshwar is famous Shiva Temple of Gangasalan. Yamkeshwar is situated at the bank of Sateri or Satedi Gad (Satyabhama or Satyarudra Rivulet) and is surrounded by Shamsan or cremation field from three corners. The Yamkeshwar Shiva Temple comes under the area of Badoli village three kilometer away from Amoli village. On last Monday of Shravan, there is large fare in this temple. There is also fare on every Shiva Ratri. There are 97 villages those visit the temple regularly. Once, Yamkeshwar was famous centre for Tantrik Vidya.
Yamkeshwar has also importance in Shilpkar Liberation Movement in Garhwal where in 1931, a conference was held by Shilpkar to eradicate untouchability from the society.
The folk story behind Yamkeshwar Mahadev Temple is that Great sage Maharishi Mrikand got son by worshipping lord Shiva. Mrikand named his son as Markandeya. However, Narad, by the study of astrology suggested that Markandeya would die by eleventh year. Mrikand became sad. Markandeya asked the remedies for getting longer life. Sage Mrikand suggested the remedy.
Markandeya went to Manikut hill Plato and started Tap of Maha Mrityunjaya Jap at the bank of Shatrudra or Sateri River. Markandeya made the image of Shiva by sand and started Jap under a fig (Peepal) tree. At the set day of death for Markandeya, Yamraj (the death God or God of Righteous acts) reached to take the life of Markandeya. Markandeya requested to Yamraj that since his Jap of Maha Mrityunjaya (a religious ritual for winning over death) is incomplete, Yamraj should wait. However, Yamraj threw Kalpash or death weapon on Markandeya. Markandeya caught the sand image of Lord Shiva by both hands. The sand image broke down and Maha Mrityunjaya Rudra emerged from the image. Watching appeared Lord Shiva, Yamraj ran towards Jamradi village (Today’s Yamkeshwar). Yamraj started doing Tap for lord Shiva (form Rudra) at Jamradi (Today’s Yamkeshwar).  Lord Rudra told to Yamraj that where there is Maha Mrityunjaya Jap (ritual) Yamraj should not enter there. Maha Mrityunjaya or Lord Shiva told to Yamraj that where he (Yamraj) was performing Tap a self born Ling image is there. Lord Shiva suggested Yamraj to perform Jap or prayer of that self born Ling. Lord Shiva told that this image would be famous by name of Yama.  Lord Shiva blessed that whoever performs the Yama Shiv Ling that person would get longer life.  Yamraj performed Jap of lord Shiva or Ishwar for a year there. Since, Yamraj performed Ishwar prayer or Jap there it is called Yamkeshwar

Jaspur Chhal ka Shivala or Shiv Temple of Jaspur Region: a Garhwali Folk Story for Opportunity Seeking Manager

Garhwali Folk Tales, Fables, Traditional Stories, Community Narratives -61

Compiled and Edited by: Bhishma Kukreti (Management Training Expert)

(Narrated by Late Murli Dhar Kukreti, Baij Ram Kukreti, Jaspur, Pauri Garhwal)

Jaspur is one of the oldest villages in Gangasalan. The first Kukreti of Garhwal settled in Jaspur (Malla Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal).
When present Thantholi village was not established this village area was under Jaspur. There is a Shiva temple in Beldhar of Thantholi and surprisingly the temple is situated in a hill top called Beldhar or hill top where Bel trees grow. It is said that in old days, there was a spring in Beldhar or hill top. Kukreti of Jaspur donated Thantholi to Kandwal migrated from Kimsar and made Kandwal the priest of Beldhar Shivala.
There is a village Keechkhal in between Chailusain (Dabralsyun) and Dwarikhal (Langur Walla). Keechkhal would be fifteen to twenty kilometers far from Beldhar. There was farmer named Balkhu in Keechkhal. He had big cow herds. Once, Balkhu found that his one cow did not milk for many days in morning and in evening too. Balkhu asked the future teller but the future teller said that no deity is unhappy with Balkhu. Balkhu checked the nipples of his cow and found that as if somebody milked her in night. Again next morning, Balkhu checked nipples of cow and found that somebody milked the cow.
Balkhu thought about knowing milking of cow. Balkhu hid in his cowshed courtyard outside the room. Balkhu had an axe in his hand. Balkhu was surprised that automatically the cowshed door opened. His cow came out of shed and started walking.  Balkhu followed his cow. Cow was walking without any fear in night. Cow reached Beldhar by passing Chailusain, Silogi, and Ganikya hill shrines. Balkhu was shocked to see that his cow reached at Shiv temple of Beldhar. She stood above Shiv Ling and started milking. When the cow stopped milking she started to return.
Watching the scene of his cow milking on Shiv Ling, Balkhu became angry and he hit with force his axe on Linga but the axe hit the yoni part. The hitting broke Yoni into three parts. One broken part fell below Jaspur and other part fell below Bareth. The third par remains with Shiv Ling. After breaking Shiv Linga, Balkhu returned to his village.
After many days after the incident, village chief of Jaspur saw a dream and saw that one Shiv Linga  part is lying in south of Jaspur village and other part below village Bareth. The village chief built a small Shivala in Jaspur territory (South of Jaspur). Many years after, Shiv Datt Padhan (Heirs of elder brother of Kukreti of Jaspur who were migrated to Gweel village) renovated the small Shivala below Jaspur village. Shiv Datt Padhan brought a Gusain or Giri family for performing daily rituals and to look after the temple. Shiv Datt Padhan also donated Gusain or Giri family the land near Shivala temple.
A Kukreti family from Gweel built another Shivala where the broken part of Shiv Linga was fallen.
Today, both the Shiva temples are called Gweel ka Shivala.
