Description of Garhwal in Mahabharata -1

Presented by Bhishma Kukreti

Bharat is one of the greatest legends of India. Jamboodweep (now India) was named Bharat after the glory of king Bharat.
Bharat was son of king Dushyant and Shakuntala.
Shakuntala was daughter of great sage Vishwamitra and nymph Menka. Neither menka nor Vishwamitra were ready to take responsibility of their girl child. Mahrshi Kanva took Shakuntala to his Ashram Kavashram which is in Bhabhar /Kotwara at the bank of Malini. There are ample of proofs that Kanvashram was in Bhabhar. Knavshram is below the Shivalik shrines as stated in Mahabharat . When king Dusyant visited Bhabhar and met Shakuntala in Kanvashram he fell in love with her so she too.
Bharat was born in Kanvashram, Bhabhar and studies there. Under the guidance of Maharshi Kanva .
Later on Dushyant accepted Bharat as his successor or crowned king and named him Bharat. King Bharat won many battles and ruled all over Jamboodweep including Cambodia, Burma, Vietnam and Thailand. Bharat was called Chakrvarti samrat or who won all the corners.
There is description about Vishwamitra, Kanvashram, Dusyant, and king Bharat in Mahabharata in Adiparv- 68 to 74/140
A couple of examples about the Greatest King of all time Bharat and Himalayan shrine – Malini etc :
There is good details of Bhabhar, malni bank, Kanvashram, Dusyant, Shakuntala and Bharat in Shatpath Brahman too.

Uttarakhand Branding – 5
War Guru Dronacharya: a Brand Enhancer  for Garhwal Uttarakhand Brand in Mahabharata Era

Notes on Uttarakhand Branding in Historical perspective, Kumaun Branding in historical perspective, Garhwal Branding in historical perspective (Place Branding)

                                                             Bhishma Kukreti

Place branding depends on many factors for its glowing effects on outsiders. The famous person born in any place provides a sense of strong branding for that particular place brand. Due to birth place of many legendary figures of Mahabharata time, Uttarakhand was a prominent place brand at the time of Mahabharata era.
Great War guru of all times was Guru of Pandavas and Kauravas in Mahabharata. Great war Guru of all time Dronacharya was very famous personality of Mahabharata era. Connection with any place with Great War guru of all time Dronacharya would had been appositive point for such place.
Sage Maharshi Bhardwaj was from Uttarakhand and most of Garhwalis have Bhardwaj gotra in the name of great personality of Garhwal – Mahrshi Bhardwaj.
Adiparv (129/33-38) of Mahabharata describes details of birth of guru Dronacharya. guru Dronacharya and his sister was religious son and daughter respectively of Mahrshi Bhardwaj (taking birth through Kalas). However, it is also afact that Drona and Droni were from Dron (today’s Dehradun)
There is following Shloka in Bhadrmitra coin found from Dehradun in Shunga era script.
It is sure that due to war guru Dronachary’s connection with Garhwal Uttarakhand, Garhwal Uttarakhand brand would have definitely benefitted for many ways.

When Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru the prime minister of Indian used to visit Kashmir for holidaying, Kashmir used to get prominent news and ultimately the visit of Pundit Jawaharlal Nehru enhanced the tourist image of Kashmir.

Hunting by Pandu in Bhabhar, Garhwal, Uttarakhand
At the time of Pandu and Dhristrashtra , Garhwal was having a very attractive image for hunting and Tapsya too.
Pandu the king of Hastinapur used to visit Bhabhar Garhwal, Uttarakhand. There is a place called ‘Panduvalasot’ in Bhabhar , Garhwal, Uttarakhand that reminds us that King Pandu used to visit dense  Shal /Sal forest  in plains of Garhwal.  Mahabharata describes about Garhwal plains as hunting ground for king Pandu as:

Tapsya by Pandu in Garhwal, Uttarakhand
When Pandu had to repent and had to do Tapasya (penance) , Pandu visited Chaitrarath, Kalkoot (Kalsi), Gandhmadhan, Badrikashram, Kedar shrines and did penance in Pandukeshwar and Agystmuni (Mahabharata, Adiparv, आदिपर्व, 118/2-47, 118/48-50, 124/3-4,125/29.
                               Birth Place of Pandvas
The sons of Pandu were called Pandvas and they were five brothers Yudhisthar, Bhim, Arjun, Nakul and Sahdev. Adiparv of Mahabharata states that Agystmuni was the birth place of Pandavas (Mahabharata, Adiparv, आदिपर्व, 122/123).
The above information direct us that Garhwal, Uttarakhand was a famous a famous and useful place at the time of Mahabharata era.
The visit of a famous personality becomes the platform for public awareness for the place and a factor of enhancing the place image for place branding.
The birth place of famous personalities is also appositive factor for place branding.
In a write up ‘Destination Branding for Small Cities’, a small city brand expert Bill Baker suggests for taking advantage of famous personality visit to the place in place branding.

History of a Place Creates Sense of Place in Province or State Branding

History affects on the place branding, country or nation branding, region branding, province branding or State Branding.  In a research article ‘How the History of Scotland creates a sense of place’, Alastair Durie, Yeoman, U.McMahon –Beattie (2006) describes that history of Scotland definitely creates a sense of place or appeal for Scotland in the mind of prospective. Another place branding researcher Janez Damjan (2005) in his article ‘Development of Slovenian Brands: Oldest are the Best’ provided the importance of history of Slovenia in creating Slovenia as place brand. W.Olines(2002) also support the importance of history (old or and new)for  the place branding, country or nation branding, region branding, province branding or State Branding.
History of Uttarakhand is one of the Pillars for Uttarakhand Branding (Place branding)
The history of Uttarakhand is an essential component for Uttarakhand branding i.e. for place branding concept.  The history of Uttarakhand in context of Mahabharata is a positive factor for place branding concept to increase the state image.
Gifts from Uttarakhand for Yudhisthar in Mahabharata Era
When Pandavas were given a barren land Indrprashth as portion from division of Kuru kingdom, they transformed the land from barren to golden land. Yudhisthar the eldest Pandavas called rajsuya Yagya and invited the kings from all over Bharat/India.

By donating food the Shankha used to blow itself.
In Sabhaparv of Mahabharata the narrator describes the details Castes and Kings visited to raj suya Yagya .
Sabhaparv describes the importance of Gangajal or Ganga water in Mahbharata era
(Mahabharata -Sabhaparv – 28/6, 49-51, Sabhaparv51/7, Sabhaparv52/2-4,   Sabhaparv 52/5-7)
Requirement of Writer’s contribution in Uttarakhand Branding
The writers of Uttarakhand should provide the references of Mahabharata about the references of Uttarakhand in Mahabharata that the prospective know about the existence of Uttarakhand and its importance in Mahabharata era.
