Chakrata is a secluded hill station, around 100kms North west of Dehra Dun. It occupies two hills known as Chakrata and Kilani.

 Established as a British cantonment by Col. Humes in 1866, it is presently a restricted military area and a hub of elite Special Indian forces. Administratively it is a subdivision of the Dehra Dun District. According to the 2001 Census, its total population is 3497!!

For all practical purposes Chakrata is out of bounds for foreigners.
Forests are lush green and thick, with a sprinkle of Buransh (Rhodenderon) trees. The red Buransh flowers are in full bloom during spring season, a sight paralleled only by a few others in nature. Juice obtained by crushing the flowers is both tasty and nourishing.

Chakrata is not your usual type of a hill station. Those looking for swank hotels,restaurants, shopping and sight seeing  will be sorely disappointed. It is for those who have a penchant for the unremarkable and the quaint.

 Time seems to stand still here. There is nothing to do save for gazing over the rugged Himalayan landscape and feasting your eyes on the dense forests.

ऊंची पहाड़ियों और घने बरसाती वनों से घिरा यह स्थान पर्यटकों के लिए आदर्श जगह है। यहां ठहरने के लिए फोरेस्ट रेस्ट हाउस की व्यवस्था है जिसके चारों ओर के नजारे काफी आर्कषक हैं। कानासर चकराता से 26 किमी. दूर चकराता-ट्यूनी मार्ग पर स्थित है।

From the bazar we wandered off into the forests. The tracks in the jungle are easy enough for the uninitiated.Being a cantonment has been a blessing for the town as it has ensured that the forests have been well protected. They abound in deodar, oak, fir, spruce, rhododendrons and occasional pines.

The hill sides are carpeted with ferns and wild flowers. Bears, panthers and leopards are reported to be occasional visitors. Langurs are a common sight. Bird life is plentiful. The only bird that we see in the big cities- the crow- is much larger and blacker too!

Famous for its calm environment and pollution free atmosphere, chakrata is situated at a distance of 98 kilometers from Dehradun armed with some of most fascinating locales; it is just perfect for trekkers and nature lovers.

 Some of the most scenic forests like that of conifers, rhododendrons and oaks provide a perfect opportunity for long leisurely walks.

The 72km route from Mussoorie to Chakrata was a quiet, desolate weather beaten road. For hours I met no one, saw no other vehicle and was riding through the twisties lost in my thoughts, enjoying the calm, the stillness around me and the inner peace it bought..

देव वन

चकराता से 16 किमी. की दूरी पर स्थित यह स्थान घने जंगलों से घिरा हुआ है। देव वन समुद्र तल से 9500 फीट की ऊंचाई पर है। यहां से हिमालय की विशाल पर्वत श्रृंखलाएं देखी जा सकतीं हैं।

Samany, :) :) :)
I am writing, 'coz my late mother was a Jaunsari, but my late father was a Garhwali.

Because of this I neither can speak Jaunsari or Garhwali.
I think the Garhwali spoken in my village Sainji, is not the Garhwali spoken in Tehri.

Anyway I am writing this is my mother elder sister, my mausi settled in Chakrata.
There is a place in Chakrata Camp called Lal Kurti.
She used to live there, but is not alive anymore.
Her children live there, my cousins.

I have taken a few photographs, which I would like to show yoe guys...
