The Bengal tiger - Champawat:

Of all the sub-species of tiger it is the Bengal which has gained the worst reputation as a man-eater. It has been said that "at one time, in parts of India, at the beginning of the 19th century, man-eaters were so prevalent that it seemed to be a question of whether man or tiger would survive." Each night, fires encircled the villages and the native people only ever travelled in large groups, fully armed and beating drums to scare the cats.

In the 1930s tigers killed between 1,000 and 1,600 people each year, causing terror among the human population. One famous tigress known as Champawat killed some 200 men and women before being driven out of Nepal. She moved to another location, this time in India, and continued to kill bringing her total up to 436 before she was tracked down and killed in 1937.
Upon his arrival at the village where the man-eater of Champawat had taken her last victim he found the area a virtual ghost town, with villagers locked inside their huts and no one having ventured outside for a week. The tigress roamed the roads near the village roaring and terrifying villagers.

Her last kill was a 16-year-old girl out gathering wood. After trailing the tigress through blackthorn bushes draped with "long strands of the girl's raven-black hair" Corbett came across part of a human leg. "In all the subsequent years I have hunted man-eaters," Corbett wrote, "I have not seen anything as pitiful as that young comely leg-bitten off a little below the knee as clean as though severed by the stroke of an ax(e)." While distracted by the leg, Corbett forgot about tracking the tigress until, "a little earth from the fifteen-foot bank in front of me, come rolling down the steep side".

Later examination of the tigress showed the upper and lower canine teeth on the right side of her mouth were broken -- the upper one in half, the lower one right down to the bone. This permanent injury, Corbett claimed, "had prevented her from killing her natural prey, and had been the cause of her becoming a man-eater."

Shooting the man-eater of Champawat was to make Corbett an instant folk hero. Today, a stone plaque marks the village and gives details of how Corbett tracked the tigress down and finally killed her.

The Smithsonian Institution holds a famous 11-foot Bengal tiger in its World of Mammals Hall. This tiger was almost certainly a man-eater until it was shot in 1967. It may also have been a distant relation of the famous Champawat.

Jim Corbett - hunter and conservationist:

The late Jim Corbett, a famous hunter and tracker of big game, yet also an ardent conservationist, was responsible for killing the man-eater of Champawat and many other man-eating tigers and leopards over a thirty-five year period.

REETHA SAHEB

From Dhunaghat(on the Lohaghat -Devidhura road)one can  visit Reetha Saheb or Meetha Reetha, located at a distance of 72 kms.  from Champawat. Guru Nanak is said to have visited this place and have had spiritual discussions with Gorakhpanthi Jogis. The Gurudwara was constructed in 1960 at the confluence of Lodhiya and Ratiya rivers,  near village Deyuri. There are trees of sweet Reetha (Sapindus emarginatus) in the Gurudwara premises, adjoining it is the temple of Dhernath. Before the motor Road was build  to Bhingrara,  people use  to come to this place on foot. A fair is held at the Gurudwara on Baisakhi Poornima.

SHYAMAL TAL

1500 mts. above sea level, Shyamlatal is 132 kms. from Pithoragarh and 56 kms. from Champawat. Swami Vivekanand Ashram is located here at the bank of the lake. The blue colored lake of Shyamlatal is spread over an area of about one & a half sq. km. This place has some ruins dating back to the days of the early Chand rulers and others which were associated with the Pandavas. Shyamlatal is also famous for its Jhula fair. Different variety of roses also attract the travelers here.

VANASUR-KA-KILA
This is a fort at an elevation of 1859 mts., 7 kms. from Lohaghat and 20 kms. from Champawat (Lohaghat to Karnakarayat is 6 kms. by bus and Karnakarayat to Vanasur ka kila 1 km. by foot ) along the Bhowali road,  is  the  fort   of Vanasur which can be seen of all sides. The names of Shonitpur and Lohawati are linked with the myth about the assassination of Vanasur at this place. One has to walk about 2 kms. to get to the fort. The fort seems to be a construction belonging to the middle ages, but the story of Vanasur was probably associated with the spot even before the construction of the fort. Lohawati river originates near this place.

GWAL DEVTA

A deity of widespread faith and influence, Gwal Devta also known as Goril or Goll, is considered to be the presiding deity of justice. It is believed that when approached, Gwal Devta dispenses justice to a helpless victim of injustice and cruelty. Historically, Goril a Katyuric prince of Champawat, known for his unwavering justice and fair play, was himself a victim of planned conspiracy hatched up by his step mother, who had  thrown him into a river, locked up in an iron cage. Held in high esteem as a symbol of justice, a temple was dedicated to him at Gwarail Chaur at in Champawat and ever since he has grown into a deity of great influence attracting innumerable pilgrims around him. As per a story, Harish Chandra was a famous king of Champawat, who after his death, was worshipped as the folk god 'Haru'. Haru's mother's name was Kainer and he is said to be Gwall's maternal uncle.
