Mahakali Temple Gangolihat, Pithorgarh - गंगोलीहाट कालिका

<< < (2/6) > >>

पंकज सिंह महर:
The temple is famous as a seat of divine power -- a Shaktipeeth..

The  holy place of this temple is  reputed to  be in existence since time immemorial.  A reference to the abode  of the  Goddess Kalika appears in ancient texts such as the Puranas. It is  maintained that the Goddess Kali  bestows divine blessings on folks who pray to her and whom she is  happy  with.

A holy fire is known to have been burning at this  site  in ancient times. This fire is a manifestation of the power of the goddess. When the Aadi shankaracharya  visited this  part of India, the goddess is said to have appeared in his dream and asked him to  shield the  powerful fire. The Adi Shankarayacharya performed a kilan or shiedling of the fire. The  sanctum sanctorum stands at that very place.

In the modern times, the saint Jangam baba offfered prayers at the site of the temple for several years. The Goddess then  appeared in a dream to him,  and permitted him to construct a temple. The  present temple thus ows its genesis to Jangam baba.

The Goddess Haat Kali is also the Isht Devi,, the reverred Goddess, of the Kumaon regiment of the Indian army. Once, the ship in which the officers and soldiers of the Kumaon reginement were travelling started to sink. Efforts to save the ship were proving to be in vain. Then the soldiers prayed to the Goddess Haat Kali to save their ship. As if by a miracle, the ship reached safely ashore, guided by some high waves. Since then, the members of the  Kumaon regiment  pay homage to the Goddess and provide their services to the temple.

Gangolihat (pargana Gangoli, tahsil Pithoragarh)

The village derives its name from Gangoli, the name of the pargana and Hat, a name by
which the place is locally called. It has a temple of Mahakali, which is said to be of great antiquity
and is situated in the midst of a dense deodar forest. It is alleged that during the reign of the
Chand rajas, human beings were, at times, offered in sacrifice at this temple, but the practice was
stopped in the last century. Goats and buffaloes still continue to be sacrificed, particularly during
the Navaratris of Chaitra and Asvina. The place also has the remains of a small fort built by a
regent of the Chand rajas. In patti Bherang, about 8 km. from the village, there is an ancient
temple of Patal Bhubaneshvar, dedicated to Siva, which is located inside a long and dark tunnel
and attracts a large number of devotees
