Gandrayani
Gandrayani grows in slow moving streams, damp meadows, forest gullies in rocky substrata of Western Himalayas from Kashmir to Uttaranchal at and altitude of 2700-340m. The roots of the plant are pungent , aromatic diaphoretic and diuretic . It increases appetite and combined with tonics it is given in typhoid conditions , bronchitis , flatulence , colic and pain in stomach . Roots ae also used in the preparation of gin and liquors known as bitters. Gandrayani is used in uttaranchali cuisine as a flavoring agent in vegetables and dals.

Nutritional constituents : Dry roots yield essential oil (1.3%) , resin and valerianic acid and several furocoumarins such as angelicin , bergapten, xanthotoxin and umbelliferene

Product Development of Madua Baby Food
 
Madua is very important in the hilly areas of Uttaranchal as it is primarily a rain fed crop and also serves as a good winter crop. Besides being rain fed the labour requirement for its cultivation and threshing is low. Thus the input output ratio for Madua is viable as compared to the other crops.
 
Thus to explore the possibilities of commercial exploitation of the different “Madua Derivatives” specially “Organic Madua Baby Food” The Uttaranchal Organic Commodity Board undertook a pilot project on “Organic Madua Baby Food”.
 
Looking at the vast production of Madua in Uttaranchal and its high nutritional content a need was felt to make optimum utilization of the crop. As Madua has special properties, which enable it to be malted, the idea of developing baby food was conceived. An added advantage to the Madua grown in Uttaranchal is that it is organically certified. This feature makes it ideal for production of baby food.
 
CFTRI Mysore has worked in this area. The malted Madua baby (weaning) food is nutritionally balanced and an easily digestible food with high availability of the nutrients. It can be a measure to combat malnutrition in rural children. The technology of the baby food is simple, cost effective, eco-friendly and can be adapted to household and cottage level easily. CFTRI has released the process know how of the baby food to several self help groups, NGOs and small scale entrepreneurs across India and also has imparted training on its preparation to a good number of trainees from many of the developing countries.

Method of Preparation

General instructions
 
 Wash hands thoroughly before preparing the food   
 Use only clean utensils
Use the prepared food within half an hour
Discard the leftover food 
1.  Boil drinking water for 5 minute and let it cool 
2.  Pour necessary amount of lukewarm water into a bowl. 
3.  Add recommended quantity of product with continuous stirring until pap is smooth 
4. Feed baby with a clean spoon
