Naga Regiment

Naga Regiment which is also attached with Kumoan Regiment.

The Naga Regiment is the youngest Regiment of the Indian Army. In 1970, the First Battalion of the Naga Regiment was raised in Ranikhet.

History
During 1960, the delegation of the Naga Peoples Convention put forward a proposal for a separate regiment to fulfill their desire of playing a greater role in the Defence Forces of India.

First Battalion (1 Naga) of the Regiment was raised at the Kumaon Regimental Centre, Ranikhet on 01 November 1970 under the command of Lt. Col. R.N. Mahajan, VSM. Being the only battalion, it was then designated as the NAGA Regiment. The manpower to raise this battalion was provided by battalions of Kumaon, Garhwal and Gorkha (3 Gokrha Rifles) regiments. 69 Nagas were enrolled directly from rehabilitation camps of underground Nagas. However, the Regiment was to comprise 50% Nagas and 50% of an equal number of Kumaoni, Garhwali and Gorkhas. Since many Kumaon battalions had been associated with Nagaland, particularly in the years preceding the raising of the Naga Regiment, it was affiliated to the Kumaon Regiment for all regimental matters. The second battalion (2 Naga) was raised on 11 February 1985 at Haldwani.

The traditional Naga weapons viz the Dao, the Spear and the prestigious Mithun have been integrated into the Regimental Crest. The Regiment's colours are Gold, Green and Red, the gold of the rising sun, the green of Infantry and red the colour of authority among Nagas. 1 Naga was presented with 'Colours' on 06 May 1978 at Dehradun by Shri Neelam Sanjiva Reddy, the President of India and 2 Naga was presented with 'Colours' on 10 May 1990 by General V.N. Sharma, PVSM, ADC, the Chief of Army Staff.

1 Naga took part in Bangladesh operations and earned a name for the Regiment. It was awarded one Vir Chakra and three Sena Medals. The battalion was the first one to be inducted into Operation Vijay in the Drass Sector on 11 May 1999. During this operation, the battalion captured Black Rock, Thums Up, Pyramid (all part of Point 5140), Pimple Hill (later renamed as Naga Hill) and Point 5060. The battalion was awarded with two Vir Chakra and two Sena Medals for their outstanding performance during this operation. 2 Naga has been awarded 'COAS Unit Citation' twice and both times for valour and chivalry in the face of the enemy. This battalion also took active part in Operation Vijay. The battalion has earned one Maha Vir Chakra, two Vir Chakras, one Yudh Seva Medal, one Vishisht Seva Medal and nine Sena Medals.

Current Strength
Currently, the Naga regiment has a strength of 3 battalions. However, the 1st and 2nd Battalion form the part of the Kumaon Regiment.

1st Battalion
2nd Battalion
3rd Battalion

Bicentenary of the 4th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment

Raised in 1788 by Salabat Khan, Nawab of Ellichpur, to protect the Nizam of Hyderabad’s dominions, the 4th Battalion of the Kumaon Regiment now completes 200 years of service. It acquitted itself with distinction from the early years, taking part in the Maratha War (1803), Pindari War (1817), operations against Bhils (1841) and Arabs (1853), Rohilla War (1854) and operations at Jhansi (1857).

It served in China and Ceylon and during World War I, in East Africa in the Battle of Tanga (1914) and in the Lake Victoria District (1915- 1916). In 1923, the Battalion was selected for Indianisation. Among other senior officers, S. M. Shrinagesh and K.S. Thimayya were commissioned in the Battalion, later becoming Chiefs of the Army Staff.

World War 11 found the Battalion in action against Japanese forces in the Malayan and Burmese jungles.

In October 1947, the D Company of the Battalion moved to Kashmir under Major Som Nath Sharrna. A fierce battle was fought at Badgam village on 3rd November 1947, the company successfully protecting Srinagar airfield against heavy odds. Major Sharma was killed in action and awarded India's first Param Vir Chakra for leadership and gallantry of the highest order. The unit was awarded Battle Honour "SRINAGAR".

Serving with the UN Emergency Force of Gaza in 1959, the Battalion established a high reputation. Returning to India, the 4 Kumaon had the unique honour of being the first unit to be presented with new colours by Dr. Rajendra Prasad, the President of India, on 8th April 1961.

In 1965, 4 Kumaon campaigned in Kashmir against enemy infiltrators of Force Gibraltar, later capturing a dominant feature and destroying a vital enemy bridge. It was awarded Battle Honour "Sanjoi Mirpur". In the 1971 war, 4 Kurnaon captured the communication centre of Shamsher Nagar in Bangladesh and was awarded Battle Honour "SHAMSHER NAGAR". The unit repeatedly proved its mettle in intensive counter-insurgency and several difficult operations. Since Independence it has a proud tally of awards in various wars and other operations: Param Vir Chakra (1), Maha Vir Chakra (3), Kirti Chakra (2), Vir Chakra (21), Bar to Vir Chakra (1), Shaurya Chakra (2), Sena Medal (20), Vishisht Seva Medal (1), Mentioned-in-Despatches (50), COAS's Commendation Cards (10) and Army Commanders Commendation Cards (4).

The Garhwal Rifles

Garhwal Rifles is a well known infantry rifle regiment of the Indian Army. During the World Wars and the wars fought after Independence, the regiment not only showed exemplary courage but also maintained its unique identity. Mainly comprised of Garhwali soldiers, this regiment fought with great valour during the Kargil conflict. More than 25,000 soldiers of this regiment are at present engaged in the task of safeguarding the motherland. They are organised into eighteen regular battalions ie 2'nd to 19'th with the First being converted to a Mechanised Infantry Unit.

Recruitment
Soldiers recruited into the Garhwal Rifles are from the Garhwal Hills, one of the most beautiful areas of the Himalayas and are known for their hardiness, simplicity and upright manner. Garhwal consists almost entirely of rugged mountain ranges running in all directions, and separated by narrow valleys which in some cases become deep gorges or ravines. The only level portion of the district is a narrow strip of waterless forest between the southern slopes of the hills and the fertile plains of Rohilkhand.

Millions of Uttar Pradesh boys have left their mountain villages of Uttarakhand in search of good fortune or a better life than in the hills. Brave Uttarakhandi soldiers of the bygone era were originally bhagoras (deserters) of their village. Since time immemorial, the running away of village boys from the hills in search of wonderland has been a common practice. In fact it has become a tradition in Uttarakhand, which still continues unabated. The sole source of solace for the hills has been the Indian army. Most appropriately, it is the only institution that has somehow been able to check the migration of village youth. Paharis ["Of the mountains"] have always played a formidable role in defending the frontiers of India. Twenty-three battalions of Garhwal Rifles and nineteen battalions of the Kumaon Regiment clearly reflects the participation of hill people in the defence forces.

"Garhwal" is the land of many 'Garhs' meaning forts. This region was made up of many small forts which were ruled by chieftains. Garhwal originally consisted of 52 petty chieftainships, each chief with his own independent fortress (garh). The rulers of Garhwal remained independent and repeatedly expelled the attacks of the Mughal rulers of Delhi. During the 19th century, the Gurkhas attacked Garhwal and drove the rulers of Garhwal down to the plains. Thereafter the rulers of Garhwal took the help of the British forces in India and regained their kingdom. The rulers of Garhwal gave away 60% of their kingdom for the support the British gave them in driving back the Gurhkas.

Lansdowne is the most notable, albeit small, hill station in the north Indian state of Uttarakhand. It is situated 45 km from Kotdwar en route Kotdwar-Pauri road in the Pauri Garhwal district. The famous Garhwal Rifles of the Indian Army has its command office here. They have maintained the old-world charm of the 19th century and the place is still an ideal getaway. It was founded by Lord Lansdowne in 1887 AD thus being named after him.
