                      History of Garhwal King Manshah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -102

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -348

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

                             Name of Manshah
All the four Garhwal King lists mention Manshah as Garhwal King. Manodaya Kavya also mentions the King as Manshah. The European indigo business traveler William French mentions (1611) Garhwal King as Mansha. Bahuguna Vanshavali mentions that initially the name of Manshah was Manpal but Jyotishray got the title for Garhwal King as Shah. However, there is no historical proof of Bahuguna Vanshavali.
                Information Sources about Manshah

1-The two inscriptions are found on top of Khsetrapal temple in Devprayag. One is about Sahajpal. Second inscription states that in the Manshah ruling period, by order of Jyotiray Vyas and Kashi built the top (Gumuth) of Mahadev Temple and the workers –Kesav brothers of  Haridas built Mandap of said temple in 1608.
2-An inscription on Raghunath Temple Devprayag states that in the time of Manshah King, Pujari Anant Bhatt Ayapyavar Sayana ordered to build the Mandap of Raghunath Temple and Tibari-Patangan of Vishwanath temple in 1611.
3- There is an inscription in a temple near Pauri that states that on the birth day of Manshah (January 1592), King Manshah donated land for that particular temple.
4- In  Ekeshwar Temple in Mandarsyun, the inscription states that Manshah donated land for that temple (1547). It seems the readers of inscriptions could not read the exact year.
Manodaya Kavya described much about Manshah.

Relationship of Garhwal King Man Shah with Kumaon Chand Kingdom

Second time, Rudrachand (Chand dynasty King of Champawat) wanted to attack on Garhwal after the defeat from Garhwal King. However, Rudrachand died in 1597. Rudrachand had two sons. Shakti Gusain was elder son but was blind by birth. His second son Lakshmi Chand was coroneted on Chand Kingdom. Shakti Gusain was one the great strategizing persons. There was no cordial relation between Lakshmi Chand and Man Shah.

People from both the regions started calling ‘Syal Bunga’ (fort of fox) to that fort from where Lakshmi Chand initiated march towards Garhwal. Due to continuous battles between Kumaon Chand Kingdom and Garhwal kingdom, there were professional army groups those were available on daily basis. Lakshmi Chand took their services and paid them Jagir in leo of salary. A group of twenty soldiers were called Beesi Baduk.  They were offered land and they were supposed to come whenever battle is there to take side of Lakshmi Chand.

History of Garhwal King Man Shah Army Capturing and Looting Nagina (Part of Kumaon Kingdom)

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -105

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -351

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Kumaon Historian Badri Datt Pande states that Nagina region (Tehsil of present Bijnor district, Uttar Pradesh) was under Kumaon Chand King Rudrachandra Rule. Aine-e-Akbari mentions about Nagina. It seems Mughal emperor returned Nagina region back to Kumaon Chand King after Kumaon King’s Lahore trip for helping Mogul Emperor.
Historian Raturi states that Garhwal Kingdom army captured Nagina and looted there. When Garhwal King Man Shah sent his army led by Nandi to capture Champawat, Man Shah also departed his one brigade to Bhabhar of Kumaon region. Nagina was just near to Garhwal Bhabhar. Garhwal army captured Nagal, Bundaki, Kiratpur,Mandawar, Barhapur, Nahtaur and Nagina. Garhwal army looted the region Nagina. Historically, it is not sure whether Garhwal army stayed for long in Nagina (Bijnor) or just looted and returned to Garhwal Bhabhar. History does not find records of whether Mogul Emperor Akbar or Rudrachandra was collecting taxes from Nagina region. Nagina and Bijnor are ignored by historians for writing chronological history of this region.
It is believed that Syend Ghalib Ali got Nagina as Jagir from Mogul Empire.  It is not clear when Syed Ghalib Ali got Jagir of Nagina from Mughal Emperor.

History Review of Folklore about Surju Dangwal and Garhwal King Man Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -106

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -352

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

The reason for war between Garhwal King Manshah and Kumaon Chand King Lakshmi Chand is not known though historical data.
However, folklore puts some light on the situation of war between Garhwal King and Kumaon Chand King. King Manshah called all his regional commanders, wealthy men and political men on his coronation in Shrinagar. He called them to show the proofs of their financial or geographical grants /copper inscriptions etc being received from the Kingdom. Most of important elites came barring a regional commander Surju Dangwal. Gadhpati or regional commander Surju Dangwal was in asylum under Kumaon Chand of King Lakshmi Chandra in Champawat.
Garhwal King sent message to call Surju Dangwal. However, Surju Dangwal did not turn to Garhwal and remained at Champawat. Man Shah sent a request to Champawat King Lakshmi Chandra to send back Surju Dangwal. Champawat King Lakshmi Chandra did not accept the request of Garhwal King. On the contrary, Lakshmi Chandra threatened Garhwal King.
Garhwal King Man Shah attacked on Champawat with huge army. There was fierce fight for seven days at the outskirt of Champawat. Man Shah Army defeated Lakshmi Chandra and Lakshmi Chandra ran away from Champawat battle. Wife of Lakshmi Chandra took the command of the Champawat Army in her hand and she fought with Garhwal Army for many days. However, Garhwal army defeated the Champawat queen. Champawat queen had to hand over Surju Dangwal to Garhwal Kingdom.
There is mention of Champawat war in Manodaya Kavya. However, there is no mention of Surju Dangwal.
Manshah was coroneted in 1591 and Lakshmi Chand was coroneted in 1597. That means Surgu Dangwal took asylum under Rudra Chandra and not in the time of Lakshmi Chandra.
According to Manodaya Kavya, Man Shah attacked on Champawat and not Rudra Chandra.

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

People celebrate Khantudua or Bhail-Bhailo Festival on Ashuj month Sankrant in Kumaon and Garhwal as well.
Both regions have their own folklore and reasons for celebrating this festival. However, Lakshmi Chand is common factor in celebrating Khantudua or Bhail-Bhailo Festival.

Lakshmi Chand performing Mantra Sadhana for winning Garhwal

The Champawat Court priest or Raj Guru offered confidence to Lakshmi Chandra that he would win Garhwal by performing a specific mantra-Tantrik process. Guru or court priest went to Bengal for performing that specific winning Mantra. Raj Guru returned from Bengal after a year and Lakshmi Chandra attacked eighth time on Garhwal. Before attack in 1602, Lkashmi Chand performed Puja in Bageshwar and Jageshwar temples. On that time Khantuda Singh was regional commander of Garhwal army and he fought the battle with force. However, Lakshmi Chand army commander Gaida was able to kill Khantudva Singh. The win was on tine region of Garhwal. Lakshmi Chandra kept grass piles on hill tops and order was for army that when Khantuduva Singh was killed grass piles should be ignited so that message is reached to Champawat. Though, the win was mere tiny, army lit the grass piles. King Lakshmi Chandra ordered to people of Kumaon for celebrating Khantuduva by burning grass piles in night and singing Bhail-Bhailo –
Bhailo ji Bhailo ! Bhailo Khantuduva
Gainda Ki Jit , Khatad kee Har
Gaida Padyu Shyel, Khantud pade Bhel !
The frequent battles between Kumaon and Garhwal Kingdoms at border disturbed the villages both the sides. There was peace after the last battle.

History Review of Relationship of Garhwal King Manshah with Mogul Empire and Western Kingdoms

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -108

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -354

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

According to Bahuguna Vanshavali, Manshah also believed on Tantrik-Mantrik Power and used to perform various Tantrik-Mantrik rituals. Bahuguna Vanshavali states that Bharat Kavi’s Mantrik and Tantrik chanting influenced Manshah winning Utkal, Kameth , Visher, Sirmaur Kingdoms in west of Garhwal Kingdom. However, there is no proof for the statement.

Relationship of Manshah with Mogul Empire

Manodaya Kavya and Bahuguna Vanshvali confirm that Manshah had amicable relation with Mogul Emperor.
According to Bahuguna Vanshavali, Bharat Bahuguna Kavi was sent to Mogul court for some tax problems. Bharat Kavi influenced Mogul Emperor by his astrological knowledge and happily Mogul Emperor offered Garhwal King the position of Shah. From Man Shah, the Garhwal King or Pal kings started naming them as Shah. Mogul Emperor offered Jyotishray title to Bharat.
There is mention and praise of Bharat Kavi in Jahangirnama. However, there is no mention of Bharat Kavi or Jyotishray in Akbarnama.

History of Personality of Garhwal King Manshah /Man Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -109

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -355

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

According to Manodaya Kavya, Garhwal King Manshah was a serious person, brave as Bheema, and bright as the Sun.
Manshah used to follow code of conduct (Neetishastra).
Manshah was always ready to punish the criminals and used to protect and reward to noble people.
Conditions of Subject under King Manshah

The people of Garhwal were prosperous and happy in the Manshah ruling period.
Manshah protected the people of Taknaur and Painkhnada by defeating Tibet looters. Manshah defeated Kumaon king for seven times and his fame reached to other parts of India.

Statement of Business Tourist William Finch

The business tourist William Finch appreciated the ruling of Mansha (Manshah). Willam Finch described that the kingdom was in between Ganga and Yamuna Rivers and Shrinagar was the capital. Finch mentions that the King Mansha was brave and strong. The king used to take meal on gold plates. Finch states that the length of Kingdom was 300 Kos and width was 150 Kos. The snow felled on the Dhaulagiri hills and people used to come down towards south in valley. The border of Garhwal king was started 200 Kos from Agra. William described that the South Garhwal –Dehradun and Bhabhar (50 Kos from Sarhind) was very fertile.
                               Manpur the Capital
Manshah established the capital in a part of Shrinagar at Alaknanda River bank. There were high buildings in Manpur. The fort was beautiful and protected.
There was grand bazaar in Shrinagar where heavy trading used to happen. Shrinagar was famous for Kasturi or musk.
The town was famous for scholars, artists and musicians. Pundits were busy in chanting Veda rhymes.
The night was spectacular by light of earthen lamps.
There were trees of Kadamb, Kachnar, Mango, Jamun, Dadim etc outside of capital. Common birds were Parrots, cuckoo,  Baj, Pigeons, peacocks, chickens, etc.

                         Court of Manshah

The ministers of Manshah were learned, righteous and were capable interpreters of Dharmashastra. Ministers were learned to make right judgment.  Spies were clever. Manshah used to think before offering judgment. He believes in law and order. King used to take advices from his right advisors and ministers. People were happy under Manshah.

Ruling Period of Garhwal King Manshah

Becket stated that ruling period of Manshah was 1498-1518. However, the Devprayag inscriptions of 1608 1nd 1611 disapprove the theory of Backet.
Raturi stated that ruling period of Manshah was from 1591-1611. This period seems to be correct.

History Review of Bharat Kavi Bahuguna the Court Poet of Garhwal King Manshah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -110

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -356

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

In the court of Garhwal King Manshah, Bharat Bahuguna was Sanskrit poet and astrologer. Bharat Bahuguna was born in Pokhari , Chalansyun, Devalgarh Pargana, Pauri Garhwal. His father name was Ram Ji.
Bharat Bahuguna created a Sanskrit ‘Manodaya Kavya’. Only four parts of ‘Manodaya Kavya’ are available. Medhkar Shastri Bahuguna copied ‘Manodaya Kavya’ in 1782. Shambhu Prasad bahguna published ‘Manodaya Kavya’ in his Virat Hridaya book.
‘Manodaya Kavya’ is a not long poetry book but is gracious from literature point of view. Poet Bharat Bahuguna describes the battle of Painkhand very effectively. There are ample uses of figure of speeches especially for praising Garhwal King Manshah and his predecessors. The poetries also reflect History of Garhwal. There are effects of Kalidas on the poetries.
                       Bharat Bahuguna as Astrologer

There are mentions of Jyotikray in Akbarnama and Jahangir Nama. Bahugun-Banshcharit (1991) states that Buddhi Vilash Bahguna went to see Akbar and he made Janmaptri of Akbar and got title of Jytikhray.
Bahguna-Vanshcharit also states that Bharat Kavi went to see Janhagir and got title of Jyotishray.
Tajuk Janhagiri and Jahangirnama describe the astrological knowledge of Jyotishray. Jahangir, twice, also rewarded Jyotishray by cash. Jahangirnama describes about Jyotishray in the year 1622. It means, Bharat Bahuguna or Jyotishray created Manodaya Kavya before 1622.
