Manshah defeated Daba Kingdom of Tibet and had a treaty that Daba ruler would offer tribute of Chausinga Khadu (Four horn Sheep) and one and quarter Ser gold dust to Garhwal Kingdom every year. However, after death of Manshah, Tibetan looters from Daba (Zanda province) again started attacking and looting Garhwal territories. Garhwal King Shyam Shah the son of Manshah took action and attacked on Daba and incrased taxes on daba by a Chanvar Gay or a neel gay.
After some time, the relation between Daba ruler and Garhwal King started cracking. At the same, three commanders of Daba Kingdom revolted against the King Chhaprang . Shya Shah ordered his army to march though Jelukhaga, Mana and Neeti passes to attack on Daba Kingdom, Tibet. According to a missionary traveler Father Jesuit informed that there were 12000 soldiers in first army with 11000 guns and 50 Small Tops.  There were 20000 soldiers with second army with guns. The Tibetan army of Daba Kingdom fought with zeal with Garhwal army. However, there was heavy snow fall and storm in between the battle and Garhwal army had to come back. Therefore, Garhwal King was forced to have another friendly treaty with Daba (Tibet) kingdom.

History of Mughal Emperor Jahangir visiting Haridwar

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -115

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -361

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

According to Tuzk-e-Jahangiri or Jahangirnama (Memoirs of Jahangir), Mughal Emperor Jahangir visited Haridwar in 1621.
Agra’s climate was not suiting the health of Mughal Emperor Jahangir. Jahangir planned that after finding a hill region near Ganga bank suitable for his health he would establish his summer capital there.  Jahangir visited Haridwar (Shiva district as per Jahangir administration) in search of healthy region for his summer capital.
Jahangir reached to Haridwar in 1621. Mughal Emperor Jahangir camped at Ganga Bank in Haridwar. Jahangirnama describes that Haridwar was one of the established place of worship of Hindu people where Brahmins and recluses and retire in lovely places to worship God in their own ways.
Jahangir offered various types of gifts and cash to such Saints and sages who were living there in their huts. Jahangir stayed in Haridwar for a couple of days (perhaps) to find the climate of Haridwar. However, Jahangir did not find the climate of Haridwar suitable for his ailing health. From Haridwar, Jahangir marched to Kangra and from there he went to Jammu in search of summer capital.  J.S Mishra (Mahakumbh: the greatest Show in the earth) writes that Jahangir visited Allahabad Kumbh fair (perhaps at that time when he was living in Fort built by his father Akbar in Allahabad). Is it possible that means Jahangir might have visited Haridwar at the time of Kumbh in Haridwar?
Now, Shahi Snan (King’s bath) is common for Akhada heads. Perhaps the naming of ‘Shahi Snan’ started from Akbar or Jahangir time in Kumbh.
There is no mention about Shrinagar Garhwal King meeting Jahangir at Haridwar.

History of Father Antonio de Andrade, a Jesuit Missionary visiting Garhwal

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -116

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -362

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

In 1624, Jesuit Missionary Father Antonio de Andrade   reached to Shrinagar the Garhwal Kingdom capital. Father Antonio de Andrade   was the first European reaching Shrinagar Garhwal (Jesuit Missionaries in Northern India and inscriptions on their tombs in Agra 1508-1803, published in 1907). Antonio de Andrade was born in Portugal in 1580. Antonio de Andrade   entered into Jesuit Missionary at the age of sixteen. Jesuit Missionary sent Father Antonio de Andrade   to Goa. In 1624, Father Antonio de Andrade   was sent to Tibet for reforming Buddhist monks as missionary believed that Buddhist monks of Tibet were Christians but missed their path of Christianity. On 30th March 1624, Father Antonio de Andrade, Brother Manuel Marques and his two other associates started their journey for Tibet from Agra. From Delhi the missionary representatives journeyed to Garhwal with other pilgrim groups.
When Father Antonio de Andrade, Brother Manuel Marques and his two other associates were marching towards Garhwal from Haridwar, the Mughal Emperor army presumed them as culprits escaping from Mughal prison. Moghal army wanted to dispatch missionary group to Agra.  Garhwali army presumed them as spy of Mughal army. For many days, missionary representatives spent time there at the border of Haridwar and Garhwal (perhaps at Rishikesh). Later on Garhwal King permitted Christian Missionary to travel in Garhwal territory
Christian Missionary representatives led by Father Antonio de Andrade reached Shrinagar experiencing terrific hurdles of hills and bank of Ganga road.
When missionary reached to Shrinagar the Garhwal Kingdom officers started asking various questions to missionary. Father Antonio de Andrade   did his best to satisfy the Garhwal Kingdom officers that the missionary members were visiting Tibet to meet their own brothers (Buddhist Monks) who lost their path of Christianity. It took missionary group five days to satisfy Garhwal administration that they were not spy.
Garhwal administration permitted missionary to go to Tibet via Mana. When missionary representatives reached the snow of hills did not melt around Badrinath temple one mile away from Mana village. They had to rest in Mana for a few days. Father Antonio de Andrade   came to know that Garhwal Kingdom was not ready to offer them way to reach Tibet. Leaving Brother Manuel Marques in Mana, Father Antonio de Andrade   with his tow associates or servants took a Bhotia Guide and started marching towards Tibet without informing Garhwal administration. The Painkhanda commander came to know about marching of Father Antonio de Andrade and he captured them. Painkhanda commander threatened Bhotia guide that his family was put into prison. Bhotia Guide fled leaving Father Antonio de Andrade and his associates. However, Father Antonio de Andrade and his associates went towards Tibet territory.   In path, they used to take Sattu (roasted wheat flour). Father Antonio de Andrade and his associates used to sleep into small caves or on open ground. Due to continuous snow contact with their feet and hands their foot and hand flesh got broken. The snow also weakened their eye sight but they did not weak their heart. They reached to origin of Sarswati River that is Devtal. Here, Brother Marques along with Bhotia traders also reached at Dev Tal (height 18300 Feet). After crossing Mana pass, in August 1624, they reached to Tsaparang wholesale market of Daba, Tibet.  Father Antonio de Andrade and his associates and Brother Marques returned from Tibet to Garhwal after one month.

History Review of Behavior of Garhwal Kingdom with Jesuit Missionaries

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -117

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -363

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

According to Syen Hedin (Trans Himalaya (Discoveries and Adventure in Tibet), Garhwal King put Father Antonio Andrade into Shrinagar jail presuming him as spy of enemy. However, after listening Father Antonio and understanding him, Garhwal King Shaym Shah freed father Antonio. The Garhwal kingdom officers snatched valuable from Father Antonio and his team.
Syne also writes that at the same time, a few days back, Shyam Shah attacked on Tsaparang Kingdom of Tibet. When Garhwali army returned to Mana from Tibet campaign, Father Antonio was in Mana village near Badrinath temple. Father Antonio marched towards Tibet thereafter.
Father Antonio wrote a letter to his people on 8th November after returning from Tsaparang did not write anything against Garhwal King and his officers. That means Syne’s allegations are just biased.
Second time, Father Antonio along with other Father reached Tibet in 1625. He went to Tibet through Haridwar and Shrinagar, Mana. Syen again alleges that greedy Garhwal administrators took valuable from Father Antonio but Father Antonio did not mention anything in his two “Accounts of Tibet” (Published from Lisbon in 1624 and 1626). Father Antonio had introductory letter of Mughal Emperor Jahangir with him. Father Antonio was in Tibet in 1627 and he built Church there.  This time Father Antonio had good relation with Garhwal King Shyam Shah and Shyam Shah was ready to build fort for Antonio in Shrinagar.
In 1631, Father Antonio sent his fellows Marques and other to Tibet through Mana. When Marques reached to Shrinagar, Shyam Shah died on 30th July 1631and after attending funeral of Shyam Shah, brother Marques started his journey to Mana from Shrinagar.
Father Antonio wanted to reach Tibet again in 1634 but before that he died. 18 Christian missionaries visited Tibet from 1624- 1649 and most of those missionaries visited Tibet via Haridwar, Shrinagar and Mana pass.

History of Naga Sadhus (Akhada) Marching with Weapons to Badrinath from Haridwar Kumbh Mela in 1630 AD

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -118

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -364

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

In 1630, there was Mahakumbh at Haridwar.  People from all over India came to dip into Ganga at the Kumbh Mela. Kumbh Mela was held with peace. In every Kumbh or at the time of Makar Sankranti, there had been high tension at the time of different Akhada Nanga or Naga sages (naked ascetic sages) taking dip into Ganga. Adi Shankarachary established seven Akhadas.  On that Kumbh (1630), a Naga Akhada sect decided to visit Badrinath with weapons as Chimta, Knives, Bow- Arrow, and Sword etc. For centuries there had been revelry among various Akhadas and many times those Akhadas create disturbances too and fought with weapons among themselves.  Many times, Naga sages became source of changing the Kings of small Kingdoms.
The group of 8000 Naga Sages started their pilgrim journey from Haridwar towards Badrinath. The Naga sages with weapons marched though Ganga bank road (in Pauri Garhwal). They reached to Shrinagar via Fulchatti, Banderbhel, Kandi, Vyaschatti, Dev Prayag. King Shyam Shah came to know that tension is being emerging due to Nanga sages.  Garhwal King Shyam Shah was religious King but was against sages for their heresy.
When Naga sages reached Shrinagar with weapons Garhwal King did not like (logically) that those sages visit Badrinath with weapons. Badrinath or Kedarnath had been always tension free pilgrim places from tussles of various sectarian Akhadas. Garhwal King Shyam Shah did not want tension in Badrinath region due to Akhada’s politics.  Garhwal King sent message to Sages to visit Badrinath without any weapons. Naga sages were asked to deposit their weapons in Court store. Naga sages did not listen the order of Garhwal King and insisted to visit Badrinath with weapons.  Garhwal King ordered his army to take armed weapons from Naga sages. Garhwal army took weapons from Naga sages and most of Naga sages left Garhwal and returned to Haridwar. A few Naga sages became ready to visit Badrinath without weapons and they were allowed to visit Badrinath.

Was Garhwal King Shyam Shah a Womanizer? History Review

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -120

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -366

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

The word womanizer originates from womanize that means to make effeminate. By late 1800, womanize meant to chase women.
Garhwal Kingdom Court Poet Maularam describes daily life of Garhwal King Shyam Shah as –
Shyam Shah used to wake up in morning. Garhwal King used to take bath and then used to spend good time on daily rituals (Sandhya, Dhyan). After Sandhya and Dhyan he used to offer gifts to unmarried girls (Kwanri Kanya Puja). Shyam Shah used to take work only after finishing religious rituals.
Before noon, Shyam Shah used to attend court. Shyam Shah used to punish culprit or accused as per their crimes. Shyam Shah used to think twice before offering judgment.
After work at court till noon, Shyam Shah used to visit Bazar on elephant after afternoon. There Shyam Shah used to visit a Muslim Telin (prostitute).  There in Talin’s house, King used to take wine and Kabab. He enjoyed the music and dance at Telin’s house. Around three o clock, Shyam Shah returned to palace, had bath and then used to visit his court again.
After court, in evening he used to enjoy music and women dances in his Harem. There were many beautiful dancers in his Harem. He had many woman keeps. He had Hindu and Muslim Rakhail or keeps. When all these could not satisfy his desires he initiated relationship with a Muslim Telin prostitute.
Garhwal King Shyam Shah never hesitated to meet Muslim Telin prostitute openly. When Shyam Shah  was on the way to her house he used to offer gifts and donations to people asking for help.

History of Garhwal King Shyam Shah Recognizing Scholars and Prosperity in Garhwal

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -121

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -367

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Historian Raturi criticized Shyam Shah as proud, arrogant, injustice maker. However, Dr Dabral argued that Raturi was biased in criticizing Shyam Shah. Dr Dabral referred ‘Gadh Kavya Vansh’ written by Court Poet Maularam for offering personality of Garhwal King Shyam Shah.
Maularam described Shyam Shah as offering due respect and recognition to varied scholars. Shyam Shah used to respect musicians and he was well versed of music notes (Rag Ragniyan, Swar, That, Jati, Avhoran, Aroha, Swarup etc). Shyam Shah took interest in music and dances of professional especially prostitutes.
Shyamshah used to pay due respect and offered gifts to musicians, dancers and scholars. Poets of other regions used to visit Garhwal for gifts as ornaments, dresses, money from Shyamshah. However, no historical details are available for scholars from other part of India those visited   Garhwal. Shyamshah never used to lose his temperament while being happy or angry. Garhwal King Shyam Shah was a balanced person. He used to think before speaking.

History of Prosperity in Garhwal in the Time of Shyam Shah Rule

Garhwal was prosperous and peaceful in the time of Manshah and Shyamshah. The Jesuit missionary priests visiting Garhwal and Tibet described Garhwal in their memories. It is described in the memories of priest that Tibet was in north and Sambhal was in south border of Garhwal.  The priest described that there were amicable relationship between Mughal Empire and Garhwal Kingdom.
Farista described that Garhwal king did not used the treasury earned by his forefathers and used to earn revenue by himself for Kingdom. It is aid that there were 56 Koshagar of Treasures in Garhwal.
There were 80000 soldiers in Garhwal Kingdom.

History of Ruling period of Shyam Shah

The ruling period of Shyam Shah is supposed to be 1611-1630.
Raturi stated that Shyam Shah died on 29th July 1631 (?), while boating in Alaknanda River at Shrinagar.  Shyam Shah was burnet on Chandan, pyre and his 60 wives were also thrown on pyre to burn (Sati).  Jesuit Missionary Father Azevedo was also present at the funeral of Shyamshah. His son prince Dule Ramshah was seven years old.

History of Entertainment Passionate Garhwal King Duliram Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -122

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -368

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

There is controversy over name and ruling period of Duliram Shah /Duli Ramshah. There is no mention of Garhwal King Duli Ramshah /Duliram Shah in the Garhwal King lists of Becket and Williams.
The contemporary Jesuit Missionary Priest Father Azevedo (An Account of Tibet: The Travels of Ippolito  by Desideri, Ippolito; De Fillipi, Fillipo, 1932, 2005,) mentions the death of Garhwal King Shyam Shah and his son being seven  years old boy. The folklore of Kumaon (about Balo Kalyan Chand) suggests that Balo, Dulo or Duli means either son or second. Since, Balram Shah had been previous King the son of Shyam Shah was called second Ramshah. Maularam also suggests Duliram Shah as son of Shyam Shah.
One copper inscription of 1581 suggests Duliram was King and Shyam Shah visited Jahangir in 1621. If at the time of death of Shyam Shah Duliram was seven years old that meant Duliram did not take birth in 1581. His birth should be 1623 or 1622. It means the copper inscription script reader did mistake. Maularam suggests that Duliram did rule for modest period. Perhaps his uncle Manshah ruled on his behalf.
In Kumaon campaign Mahipat Shah or Manshah sent his son Prithvipati Shah to Kumaon. That means Duliram Shah was no more at the time of Garhwal army campaign to Kumaon.

Entertainment Passionate Garhwal King Duliram Shah

As per account of Maularam, Garhwal King Duliram Shah believes in worldly enjoyment. He had many addictions for enjoyment and entertainment. Duliram Shah used to take part in hunting and used to hunt birds and wild animals by gun and arrow. Many times, Duli Ramshah used to enjoy by swimming. He also enjoyed wrestling and has wrestler in Shrinagar. There used to watch cock fight, Baj-Ladai, Bull and Ram fighting.
Duliram Shah had passion for different types of dresses.
