History Aspects of Haridwar in sixteenth (16th) and seventeenth (17th) Centuries

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -123

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -369

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

It is sad that less History details are available about Haridwar before seventeenth century. This author could not find exclusive History of Haridwar at least on Internet. Since, Haridwar came under Mughal Empire; the Uttarakhand historians could search less about History aspects of Haridwar. From British era Haridwar was under United Province or later Uttar Pradesh the history of Uttar Pradesh was thought as of Haridwar History.
Guru Nanak visited Haridwar in 1504 at the time Baishakhi. Guru Nanak preached Hindus there.
Dabestan or Dabistan –e- Mazaheb (written in Persian) is perhaps composed in 1655 and offers various religious facts of India. Chapter II offers details of Hindus. Dabistan mentions battle between Akharas in Haridwar in 1640 (Magh Mela).
The Khulasat—ut-Tawarikh (composed in 1695-1699, under Aurangzeb) acknowledges the Kumbh Mela in Haridwar.
The Jesuit Missionary priests and evangelists travelled Tibet via Haridwar and stayed there for taking permission to enter into Garhwal Kingdom in 1624. Thereafter other missionaries also stayed in Haridwar to enter into Garhwal Kingdom.
Vikramaditya founded Hari ki faidi in past. Therefore it is sure that Kumbh was also celebrated in this place in sixteenth and seventeenth century.
There are Kumaoni Pundits or priests in Radha Krishn Temple Kankhal. Perhaps the tradition of Kumaon Pundit being priests might have started in sixteenth or seventeen century.
In one Internet site (members.iinet.au/-royalty/ips/landhaura.html downloaded on 18/6/2014), the following details is given under heading ‘Landhaura (Jagir) and Parichhatgarh (Zamindari)
Rao Bahmal originally around 1660, he was Zamindar of Jhaberhemarried and had issue Raja Sabha Chand. Raja Sabha Chand was first King of Landhaura. He was granted 596 villages by Badshah Aurangzeb. Raja Sabha Chand helped Aurangzeb for suppressing rebellion Zameendars.  Raja Nahar Singh was son of Raja Sabha Chand . Nahar Chand extended his authority to Meerut and Ambala. He built many temples and Ghat in Haridwar.
Raja ramdayal took over Jagir or Kingdom in 1813.

History of Ruling Period of Garhwal King Mahipati Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -124

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -370

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

There are disagreements among historians about place of King Mahipati Shah in Pal/Shah Family tree.
According to historian Raturi, Mahipati Shah was paternal uncle (Chacha) of Shyam Shah. That means Mahipati Shah was either real brother or Manshah and son of King Sahajpal. It is also possible that Mahipatishah was son of Ramshah/Balramshah. Ramshah/Balramshah was paternal uncle of Manshah. There is no logic on accounts of Maularam about Mahpatishah being son of Dule Ramshah.
Atkinson stated that there was a wall inscription of Mahiparishah time of year 1625 in  Keshoray Math in Shrinagar. Most of the portion of Keshoray Math swept away in Birahi Ganga flood. However, record or statement of Jesuit missionary priest state that Shyam Shah died in 1631. It means the inscription can’t be of Mahipatishah period.
There was acute famine in Garhwal in 1635.
In 1635, while visiting Haridwar, Mahipatishah killed Naga Akhada saints who were with weapons.  He requested religious donation from Kumaon King Trimal Chandra to repent his killing Naga Akhada Sadhus.
Ma’asir al-umara was written by Nawab Shamsud Daula Shah Nawaz Khan at Aurangabd (in Maharashtra) having details of Mughal Empire from 1556-1780
According to  Ma’asir al-umara, the Kangada commander Mirza Shiya Nazabat Khan  attacked Garhwal in 1635 after death of Mahipatishah. Queen defended the attack of Mirza Shiya Nazabat Khan .
That means Mahipatishah ruled from 1631-1635.

History of Attacking Campaign- Strategic Plans on Neighboring Kingdoms by Garhwali King Mahipati Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -124

                       Appointing Capable Army Commanders

Garhwal King Mahipatishah /Mahipati Shah (1631-1635) was brave, ambitious, bold and brilliant soldier. Mahipati Shah planned ambitious campaign for expansion Garhwal Kingdom.
Mahipati Shah appointed capable army commanders for his march for expanding his territory.

Appointing Lodi Rikhola as Army Chief

Lodi Rikhola was born in village Bayeligaon of Badalpur region. From his childhood Lodi Rikhola was brave and had winning ambitions in any fight. It is still said that there is big rock in Bayeligaon that rock was brought by Lodi Rikhola himself alone. Lodi Rikhola is remembered a great brave, strong man of Garhwal.

Appointment of Madho Singh Bhandari as Army Chief

After the death of great warrior Lodi Rikhola, King Mahipati Shah appointed Madho Singh Bhandari as chief of army staff. Madho Singh also dg a tunnel canal in his native village Maletha. Madho Singh Bhandari was chief assistant of Lodi Rikhola.
Appointment of Banvari Das Tunvar as Commander

At the time of Kumaon campaign, Banwari das Tunvar was the army commander of the brigade. Banwari Das Tunvar came to Garhwal from Delhi and entered into Garhwal army at the time of Jahangir or Shahjahan. In Later stage of history many Tunvars as Shyam Das, Kehari Das came to Shrinagar with Suleamn Shikoh (Son of Dara Shikoh). Maularam was successor of these Tunvar.
There were many Tunvar soldiers under Banvari Das Tunvar in Kumaon campaign.

Diswali Soldiers (Muslim Soldiers) in Garhwal Army
Deswal or Diswal means the person from plains. There were sldiers from Muslim community in army of Mahipati Shah.
Ma’asir al-umara describes a Moghul army commander Dost Beg Mughal who was in Garhwal army. Perhaps after the death of above three commanders, Dost Beg had more influence on Garhwal Army. Most probably, Dost Beg was leading Deswali or Muslim soldiers in Garhwal Army.

History Review of Defense Strategy or War Management of Garhwal King Mahipati Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -125

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -372

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

The army in the time of Garhwal King Mahipati Shah was divided into two major parts. One part of armed force was regular armed force of the kingdom. The Kingdom used to pay less substantial salary to the soldiers and used to offer land to the soldiers in place of salary (Jagir or Thokdari)
At the time of war, the young, enthusiastic and brave people were invited to enter into Garhwal Kingdom army. Kingdom used to pay a little salary and chance of portion of got in looting at the time of battle. Armed forces were free to loot in battle time. The Kingdom did not have any arrangement of training the army -temporary or regular.
Soldiers used to have their own dress, weapons and food. Soldiers used to have Sattu (flour made by roasted wheat, barley etc) and Chabena with them for food. They used to keep Sattu in basket and water in Tumadi (Lauki).
The same defense management was being applied about soldiers in Kumaon Kingdom, Tibet Kingdom, Sirmaur Kingdom and other neighboring Kingdoms.

Region wise Soldiers in Garhwal Kingdom

The numbers of Garhwali Rajput and Khas Rajput was more in army of Garhwal Kingdom.
The soldiers from Lohaba and Badhan eregions used to be on front at the time of war.
There was an important brigade of Tunvar soldiers. They were 1200 in Mahipati Shah’s army. They were also called Dilliwali Sainik or soldiers from Delhi.
There were Muslim, Pathn soldiers in Garhwal army. Those solders were called Diswali soldiers. Their commander was also Muslim or Pathan.
Top posts in Army were offered only to Garhwali commanders and not foreigners.
Mahipati Shah was himself a brave soldier. He was strong by body and mind too. He used to enjoy torturing his enemy in battle field.

Defense Strategy of Mughal Empire in context History of Haridwar

From Haridwar point of view, the Mughal army was more professional than Garhwal kingdom and has huge number of soldiers in comparison to Garhwal.
It is also said in folklore that Garhwali soldiers used to pay their temporary services to Mughal Empire for salary and more earnings (Rami Baurani Folklore).

History of Mahipati Shah Attacking on Daba Kingdom, Tibet

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -126

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -373

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

In north of Garhwal, Kumaon and Himachal Pradesh and west of Tibet; in sixteenth century there were many small kingdoms in the region. They had rivalry with each other due to border disputes that resulted disturbances in Tibet and also affected Garhwal, Kumaon and Himachal Pradesh. Daba comes under Zanda (Xizang) country in west south of Tibet. In ixteenth century around, Daba King Galdan Chhweng captured four kingdoms. He started looting Garhwal region. Then Garhwal King attacked Daba and reduced looting practices of looters of Tibet.
However, after death of Garhwal King Shyam Shah, Daba soldiers, looters started looting in Neeti region.   Mahipati Shah sent his huge army under the leadership of brave Army commander Lodi Rikhola to suppress the encroachers from Tibet. Raturi states that Garhwal King Mahipati Shah was also with army in Tibet campaign.
Getting information, the Daba King sent his army to resist Garhwal army in Neeti valley at border. There was fight in Himalayan Pass of Neeti between Tibetan army and Garhwal Army. Lodi Rikhola became successful in pushing Daba Tibet army into Tibet side on descent.

Capturing Daba by Garhwal Army commander Lodi Rikhola
Garhwal Army marched inside of Daba Kingdom. At the same time, Daba King died. Garhwal army captured Daba Garh (fort) and a Buddhist temple (Baudh Vihar). Satalz River was the bordering mark between Daba Kingdom, Tibet and Garhwal Kingdom.
Garhwal King sent tow army commanders that is Bartwal brothers to look after administration of Daba region. One Bartwal brother was made ruler of Daba Kingdom and other brother was made Army Chief of Daba, Tibet region. Dr Bhakt darshan mentions name of one Bartwal brother as Bhim Singh. However, Bhakt Darshan did not mention the sourse ofreference for Bhim Singh.

History of Killing of Bartwal Bandhu by Daba, Tibetans Army and Lhasa Army (Around 1631-35)

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -127

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -374

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Under the capable leadership of Army Chief Staff Lodi Rikhola, Garhwal army captured Daba (Zanda, Tibet) region. Garhwal King Mahipati Shah was also with the army. After capturing Daba territory of Tibet, King and Lodi Rikhola, most of the soldiers of Daba campaign left Daba, Tibet and returned to Shrinagar before winter.
There were a few Garhwal Kingdom soldiers in Daba Tibet. Garhwal King handed over the administration of Daba to Bartwal brothers.
The heirs of Daba (Tibet) King requested Lhasa Lama for help to fight with Garhwal Kingdom soldiers. Lhasa Lama sent an army led by a Lhasa commander to Daba. Lhasa commander with his army attacked on Garhwal army.
Offering the sitting of Raturi, Historian Dr. Dabral states that a supporter of Tibet, Brave General Sheetal Singh Sheet) also attacked n Garhwal Army. Dr. Dabral did not mention who was Sheetal Singh.
Lhasa Army, Daba army and Army of General Sheetal Singh attacked on Garhwal army from all sides with force. The opponent army beheaded soldiers of Garhwal Kingdom. In this battle of Daba, Daba army and supporting armies killed both the Bartwal brothers.
The swords of Bartwal brothers are kept in a Vihar of Daba as Gift of Succeed. Dr. Dabral assumes that there might be head of Bartwal brothers in any Vihar of Daba as happened with Kashmiri brave soldier Joravar Singh.
Historian Raturi states that people of Daba used to worship the swords of Bartwal and their idols too.

History of erecting Chabutaras /Small Terraces at Garhwal - Tibet Border by Madho Singh Bhandari

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -128

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -375

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Under the leadership of Army chief Lodi Rikhola, Garhwal army captured Daba territory of Tibet.  Daba King took the help of Lhasa Lama and Sheetal Singh to kill residency commanders Bartwal brothers posted in Daba by Garhwal King Mahipati Shah.
It seems that there was peace between Garhwal and Tibet after killing of Bartwal Brothers. It seems there was another treaty between Daba King and Garhwal King.
Mahipati Shah sent his new Army Chief Madho Singh Bhandari to Tibet. Madho Singh Bhandari stabilized the border of Tibet and Garhwal. Madho Singh built Chabutaras /small terrace or small pillars at the border of Tibet and Garhwal for demarcation signs. Raturi informed that there were still a few Chabutaras at the border.  It is also said that Chabutaras were built by Ajay Pal.

History of ‘Roti Shuchi’ Custom in Garhwal
History of Initiation of ‘Purity of Bread’ Custom in Garhwal

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -129

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -376

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

At the time or before Attacking on Daba, Tibet by Garhwal King, the upper cast Brahmins and Rajput used to cook food and take food (eat) without sewed dresses as Dhoti and Langot. The upper body part of cook and eaters used to be naked or covered by only fine Dhoti. The custom was that food would be cooked in prescribed kitchen and had to be eaten in prescribed kitchen only. No food was eaten outside kitchen.
When Garhwal army reached to Daba, Tibet, Himalaya the cook had to face adversity due to severe cold and snow..  It was just impossible for a normal human being to cook and eat food in semi naked condition. Mahipati Shah consulted his religious leaders and was decided that cooking bread, vegetables with dress by cooks and then eating bread and vegetables in complete dress would be pure. Of course, cooking rice and pulse/Dal had to be cooked in semi naked condition by cook. In Tibet campaign, it was decided that bread and vegetables (Roti-Sag) could be ate by army personnel outside of kitchen too and such eating would be called ‘Pure or Shuchi Bhojan’.
Later on the society also followed the new custom that Roti-Bhaji would be cooked in complete dress, could be cooked outside the prescribed kitchen and Roti-Bhaji was allowed for eating in beyond kitchen and Brahmins would also take Roti-Bhaji cooked by upper cast Rajput. Upper cast Brahmins were also allowed to eat Roti-Bhaji cooked by lower caste Brahmns and upper caste Rajput.
As far as Rice- Dal cooking is concerned Rice -Dal has to be cooked by Saryul or Brahmin cook.
Though, now, the Saryul system or Roti Shuchi custom is becoming outdated the custom exist in Feast (jeeman) in rural Garhwal.

After defeating Daba , Tibet King, Garhwal King Mahipati/Mahipat Shah handed over Chief Army Commander Lodi Rikhola the responsibility to make defensive arrangement in the border of South Garhwal (Salan region of Malla Salan, Talla Salan and Gangasaln especially Bhabhar).  The looters from Bijnor region used to loot Bhbhar and Salan region. There was afort (Garh) in south Garhwal or North Bijnor where the fort ruler used to provide shelter to looters. Lodi Rikhola attack on that Garh and broke the gate and door of that Garh. There is no record available about the place of Fort or Garh.
Lodi Rikhola was successful in defending South Garhwal border from looters. Lodi Rikhola demarked the border line too.
