History Review of North India in Garhwal King Sahajpal and his Heirs Period

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -92

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -337

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

At the initial eight years of Shahajpal rule in Garhwal, there was Sher Shah Suri dynasty rule in Delhi.  Islam Shah the capable son of Sher Shah expired in 1553.
Muhammad Shah Badali ruled till 1557. Humayun captured Delhi just before the death of Abdali. The heirs and succssors of Sher Shah had fierce infighting among themselves.
At this time whole of North India suffered many adverseries as drought, loss in agro produces etc. There were social disturbances too. There was crucial famine too and it is said that human ate human flesh.
Humayun died on 24th January 1556. His son Akbar was a teen young of fourteen years old. Akbar did manage rule well with the help of his Guardian Bairam Khan. Akbar was wise in recognizing the talented person. He was not hard core religious Muslim ruler but was secular.

History of Amicable Relation of Garhwal King Sahajpal with Mogul Emperor Akbar

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -92

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -337

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Garhwal Kingdom was extended till east of Ganges plains of Haridwar, Chandighat, Nazibabad, Bijnor, Afjalgarh. Akbar rule was over Haridwar especially today’s Western Haridwar district and Saharanpur. Akbar had rule over Bhabar of Kumaon too. Akbar used to call Ganga water from Haridwar. Akbar used to take Ganga water on daily basis as Akbar was fussy about drinking water. He had stationed servants at Haridwar to send Ganga water in sealed barrel.
In the time of Akbar, Haridwar was famous as also sated by Abul Fazal ‘Maya vulgo Haridwar on the Ganges”.
Akbar used Basmati rice of Dehradun too.
Though, Akbar also won Tibet and logic suggests that Akbar could have won Garhwal too. However, the writings of Akbar period witness that Shrinagar Garhwal was a sovereign Kingdom at the time of Akbar.  Garhwal King did not pay any tax or tribute to Akbar as subordinate ruler of Akbar. Rupchand of Kumaon had to accept overriding rule of Akbar.
Folklore suggests that Garhwal was under Akbar and the Garhwal King told a proverb that Garhwal is as the back of camel and Akbar did not levy any tax on Garhwal. However, there is no historical evidence that Garhwal was under Akbar.
The evidences suggest that Garhwal King Sahajpal had cordial relation with Akbar.

History Review: Mogul Emperor Akbar Copper Coin Mint in Haridwar

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -93

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -339

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Akbar Coinage Mint at Haridwar and Saharanpur

Present Haridwar district of Garhwal region was under Akbar at the time of Garhwal King Sahajpal.
Akbar had two copper coin mints at Saharanpur and Haridwar.
The present city of Haridwar was laid down by Raja Mansingh the minister of Akbar. After the death of Raja Mansingh Singh, the ashes of Raja Mansingh Singh were submerged in Ganges at Haridwar by order of Akbar. The last rites of Man Singh were performed in Haridwar.
Manmohan  Sharma (1979) describes about Man Singh Chhatri (Canapy of Mansingh) that it constructed in Mogul style.
Raja Man Singh renovated Har-ki –Faidi. Raja Man Singh also built a couple of temples in Haridwar.
The copper for coins was bought from Garhwal for Akbar Coinage Mint of Haridwar and Saharanpur.
History Review of Mogul Coins found in Garhwal
Dr Dabral offered the details of Mogul cons found in Garhwal-
1-Kuntani (Dabralsyun, Pauri Garhwal) -Around 1945, labor found a vessel (Gagar) with coins while digging foundation for Kuntani primary school (border of Khaman). Dr. Dabral could only got two damdi coins and two adheli coins.
2- Kainti Gaon (Dugadda , Salan, Pauri Garhwal)-Dr. Dabral found two silver coins of Mogul period in Kainti village.
3-Sald Mahadev (Salan, Pauri Garhwal)- Dr Dabral found two Shah Alam copper coins in Sald Mahadev excavation.
4-Dr. Dabral found a couple of coins from lal Dhang
It seems that the coins of mogul period were commonly used in Garhwal as exchange medium.

History Analysis of Characteristics of Garhwal King Sahajpal

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -96

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -342

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Ruling Period of Garhwal King Sahajpal

There is Devprayag inscription of Sahajpal of 1548. The inscription period clearly suggests that the crowning date of Garhwal King Sahajpal would not be after 1548. It means the King Sahajpal was crowned before 1548. There is mention of a Garhwal King as Ram Shah in Akbarnama (1581). Ram Shah is identified as Balbhadra Shah or Balram Shah. That means Sahajpal was not ruling Garhwal in 1581. Raturi suggests Ruling period of Sahajpal up to 1575.

                        Praiseworthy King Sahajpal

Manodayakavya by Bharat poet (1/5-11); describes Sahjapl as brave and strong king. His subject was happy. King Sahajpal was wise king and knew strategies.
Garhwal King was stronger than his enemies. The looter Hussain Khan was wounded in Sahajpal time.
Garhwal King Sahajpal used to offer shelters to scholars. Sahajpal used to offer donation to Brahmins.
Garhwal King was worshipper of Lord Shiva.

History Review of Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -97

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -343

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

History Review of Name for Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah

Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah is named as Balram Shah, Vijay Shah, Bahadur Shah. In Akbarnama, this king is supposed to be named as Ramshah. This king was contemporary to Kumaon Chand King Rudra Chand.

Culture of Adding ‘Shah’ in the name end of Garhwal King

Prior to Balbhadra Shah, all Garhwal king of Ajeypal dynasty had names ending with ‘Pal’. Balbhadra is the first Garhwal king whose name ends with ‘Shah’.
There are folk stories about adding ‘Shah’ with Garhwal King name-
1-In 1483, Bahalol Lodi visited Garhwal for health improvement. Bhalol Lodi was pleased to get welcome of Balbhadra Shah and offered him ‘Shah’ title.
2-Aurangzeb offered Shah title to Garhwal King after Garhwal king handing over son of Dara Sikoh  Suleman Sikoh.
3- Garhwal King sent a Bartwal his representative (from Sateda gaon of Talla Nagpur) to Delhi. Bartwal told the exact illness of a wife of Delhi court minister by a tag tied on the hand of that women. Bartwal demanded Shah title for his king.
4-Akbar had come to Bhabhar near Nazibabad. Garhwal King was also accompanying Akbar. Garhwal king saved Akbar from the lion attack. Garhwal king also pacified the disturbances by many regional Thoakdar against Akbar in Nazibabad region. Akbar offered ‘Shah’ title to Garhwal King.
5- According to Bahuguna Vanshavali, Buddhi Vilas Bahuguna got title Shah for Garhwal King Vijay Pal from Delhi court in 1589. Vijay Pal was then called as Vijay Shah (Balbhadra Shah). Vijaypal offered Badrinath Dharmadhyaksha position for Bahuguna. The last Bahuguna Dharmadhyaksha was late Devi Prasad Bahguna of Pokhari.
6-Another folk story of Bahguna caste states that Bharat Kavi got ‘Shah title for Garhwal King Manpal from Badshah Pashah.
However, there is no historical logic and proofs behind folk stories of Bahuguna caste history.
It seems that Hindu Kings of India started ad Shah at the end of their names in or before Akbar period.

History Review of Kumaon Chieftains, Sirmaur Chieftains contemporary of Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -99

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -345

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Research Student)

Kumaon Rulers the contemporary of Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah

Akbarnama and Aiene –e-Mulk state the names of Kumaon Chieftains as Ramshah, Mukutsen and Karan. After analysis of history literature, Dr Dabral states that at the time of Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah, Rudra Chand was Chand King in Kumaon and Deep Prakash was ruling in Sirmaur (Himachal).
The name Ram Shah mentioned in Akbarnama etc is perhaps Balbhadra Shah or Balram Shah.
There were small sovereign chieftains (Thakurai) in Kumaon other than Chand Kings. A couple of Katyuri Chieftain Rulers in a couple of territories were not under Chand dynasty rule in Kumaon at the time of Balbhadra Shah. Doti was ruled by Katyuri till 1790.  It is definite that Rup Chandra of Kumaon and Balbhadra Shah of Garhwal territories had rule over Bhabhar of their respective territories.
                  Rup Chand Meeting Akbar

The local commanders of Akbar used to attack on Bhabhar of Kumaon. Kumaon King met Akbar in Lahore and got assurance from Akbar. Kumaon King fought Nagaur Battle along with Akbar army from the side of Akbar.
Pleased by the bravery of Kumaon army and King, Akbar gifted back the Bhabhar –Tarai regions to Kumaon King.
Now, Kumaon King attacked on Seera the Katyuri chieftains with the help of Pursu Pant. Rudra Chand captured Katyuri territory Seera under Chand Kingdom and later on captured Katyuri territories of Askot, Darma and Johar too.

History of Gwaldam Battle between Garhwal Army and Chand King (Kumaon) Army

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -100

Friendly Relation between Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah and Katyuri (Kumaon) Chieftain Sukhaldev: History Review

At the time of Rudrachandra as Chand dynasty King of part of Kumaon, Katyuri kingdom also existed in parts of Kumaon. Katyuri rule was not under Chand Kingdom and was a sovereign Kingdom. When Chand Kings became ambitious in extending their territories, Garhwal rulers started having amicable relationship with Katyuri Chiefs. By in large, Katyuri rulers were peaceful kings and were favorable to the people of their own territory and territory of other rulers too.  Still as on 2014, people of both regions (Garhwal and Kumaon) sing folk songs in praise of Katyuri Kings. Garhwali and Kumaon worship a couple of Katyuri Kings as deities.
Chand King Rudrachandra captured Seera territory of a Katyuri rules territory. Sukhaldev another ruler of a Katyuri territory (Baijnath) adjacent to Garhwal was aware that Rudrachandra would also try capturing his Katyuri territory. Sukhaldev had a friendly treaty with Garhwal King.
Garhwal king Balbhadra Shah departed his army to Gwaldam and Ganai in Katyuri territory to stop the invasion of Rudrachandra.
Rudrachandra army led by Purushottam Pant or Pursu Pnat had to come to Garhwal by crossing Katyuri territory (Baijnath). When Purushottam Pant  with his army entered Sukhaldev territory, Sukhaldev cut the supply of food etc for Purushottam and his army.
                      Gwaldam Battle

There was fierce fight between Garhwal Kingdom army and Chand army led by Purushottam Pant. A Padyar commander was leading Garhwal army. Garhwal King declared a reward that whoever brings head of Purushottam Pant he would get all villages from battle field to Shrinagar. A Padyar threw spear towards Pursu Pant and Purushottam Pant died instantly. The Padyar commander brought the head of Purushottam Pant to Shrinagar. Garhwal King rewarded villages around rod from Gwaldam to Shrinagar
                       Killing of Sukhaldev
After defeat at Gwaldam, Rudrachandra attacked on Sukhaldev and around 1590-91-or 92, Sukhaldev was killed by Chand Kingdom army.

                 Date of Gwaldam Battle

It seems the Gwaldam battle was fought between 1590-1991

History Review of Characteristics of Garhwal King Balbhadra Shah

History of Garhwal including Haridwar (1223- 1804 AD) –part -101

Balbhadra Not Helping Katyuri Ruler Sukhaldev

When Kumaon Chand King was engaged in attacking Garhwal, Katyuri ruler of Baijnath helped Garhwal King. However, when Chand king attacked on Katyur Kingdom, Balbhadra Shah did not help or if helped not much is known.
                                   Strong Man

Health wise, Balbhadra Shah was strong man. He was brave. Once , he displaced the whole heavy palace door single handedly.
                      Ruling period of Balbhadra Shah

It is difficult to guess the ruling period of Balbhadra Shah and Sahajpal. It seems that the ruling period of Sahajpal and Balbhadra Shah was 1548-1591.
It seems Balbhadra Shah ruled from 1581-1591.
