The British Pioneers and artillery forwarded even Gurkha were firing and throwing arrows etc.  Lieutenant Elis was motivating the army and went forward. He was to stand the ladder for crossing the wall of Parkhal. Gorkha fired gun on Elis as soon he stood the ladder. Elis died on the spot.  Worried soldiers ran towards huts. The Pionners, soldiers of 53 companies rushed to forward. They had to hid behind the wall of Parkhal.  There was heavy firing and arrow throwing from Gurkha side. At the same time there was fire on huts and ladders burnt. Now, British army did not have mechanism for crossing the wall. (Sitaram, from Sipoy to Subedar).

When a British army soldier informed that he saw a small door at north –west of Garhi (fortress) , three companies of  Gillespie and  Ludlow with a 6 Pound Canon marched  to that place. Due to smoke around huts Gorkha soldiers did not see the British force.  The door was open. There was a wall behind the door. There was a Jijal Canon kept on the wall its mouth opening outside.  Lieutenant Canady fired the 6 Pound Canon. It destroyed the Jijli Canon. Gillespie ordered 53 Company soldiers led by Ludlow for attacking.  Suddenly there was attack of canons from Door. Due to Gun fire, 7 British soldiers were killed. The body parts of dead soldiers fell here and there. British soldiers went backwards. Gorkha soldiers, men, women and children attacked from Garhwali on British soldiers with arrow, pears, stones. A stone injured Ludlow thigh. Gorkha soldiers took the opportunity and came towards British Canon. Gorkha destroyed the Canon.
Ludlow collected soldiers and marched towards door. Only four soldiers came with Ludlow. He asked them for entering the door. All four (Indians in British Army) refused entering into door as they hated Gillespie very much. Gillespie with a pistol marched ahead by inspiring the solders. Gorkha fired Gun on Gillespie and a bullet struck on chest of Gillespie. Gillespie fell down. Same time, Lieutenant O’ Hara and Captain Voirce were also killed.
It was quarter past eleven. Captain John Campbell was waiting for signal at Ashtalgaon. When signal did not reach to him he marched towards Garhi. He reached Tharapani. Gillespie was already killed by that time. Ludlow was ordering soldiers to return back from the site. Due to Campbell British army was able to get back Canon.  British army came down from Tharapani hill top.
Colonel Mawby took the charge after death of Gillespie. Mawby decided not to attack on Nalapni or Khalanga till he got Bigger Canons.
Gurkha commander Balbhadra  accepted that British could  take  the dead and injured soldiers. However, Gurkha cut dead bodies into pices and made them naked.
Among European officers, one general and 4 officers were killed and 18 were injured those died later on. Among non commissioned officers, 30 were killed and 213 were injured. Among dismounted soldiers, half of the soldiers were killed or injured. In total, 31 officers were killed and 750 were injured.
Gillespie was responsible for the defeat and his death. He could wait a few hours to get all army soldiers for surrounding the Garhi. In haste he attacked Garhi and was killed. His body was taken to Meerut and buried with full army honor.
Mawrby came back to Khurbura with soldiers.

Garhwalis came to know that Sudarshan Shah and British are interested in freeing them from Gurkha rule Garhwali were pleased. Garhwalis believed about freedom from Gurkha after knowing the British Army entering in Dehradun.
Hearsay played a major role in British attacking on Gorkha for freeing Kumaon and Garhwal. Minya Prem Singh (Guldast Tavarikh) wrote details about pleasure of Garhwalis for the hope of freeing from Gurkha Rule.
Garhwalis were hopeful that after some time, British army will have rule over Hills and Plains of Garhwal.
Salanis (South Garhwal’s Garhwalis) inviting British for Attack
The South Garhwal’s Garhwalis were most pleased by getting information of British entering into Dehradun.
The Langur Kamin Bagha Raut wrote a letter to company’s political employee Tula Ram as (Frazier) –
“We are pleased by knowing that British Army reached to Dehradun. If British army is interested for alternate attack it should march towards Chila and Kotdwara. There are only hundred Gurkha soldiers in whole of Salan at Langur Garhi. There is no other soldier in Salan. Company should not delay in attacking Gurkha in Salan. The Kamin of Bungi - Paino is with us. When British army will reach to Langur Garhi, we shall stop all supply for Gurkha Army. However, till British army reached to Langur Garhi we cannot revolt against Gurkha. No Gurkha soldiers are coming from east (Kumaon)”
Frazier ( Himalaya Mountains) wrote that many Garhwalis from Salan wrote letter to Tula Ram

As soon as Gurkha killed British officials and British army returned to Khurbura the Gurkha spread the news of their win over British attackers. The news reached to Shrinagar that there was fierce war between Balbhadra and British army. The information reached to Shrinagar that Balbhadra killed Gillespie and Gurkha killed many British army soldiers.
Garhwalis became frustrated after receiving the information of British loosing war. Gurkha punished many Garhwalis for conspiracy. Shiv Ram and Kashiram of Saklana were helping British. Gurkha heavily punished the family members and villagers of Shivram and Kashiram.
When Gurkha used to receive information about any Garhwali having sympathy with British Gurkha officer used to punish such Garhwali without finding the truth. Gurkha used to spread news of Gurkha army reaching to Kumaon and Garhwal for attacking British. Gurkha used to threaten Garhwalis and Kumaunis for helping Gurkha army in carrying loading and unloading the war related materials of Gurkha soldiers.
Gurkha officers used to order villagers for sending sons or young relative for serving Gurkha soldiers. Through various means, Gurkha officers also compelled villagers for supplying food grains and tax.

Hastings, Frazer , Sudarshan Shah , Shivram and Kashiram had hope that Garhwalis would revolt against Gurkha as soon as British army reaches to Dehradun.  Such Pamphlets were distributed among Garhwalis. However, the battle loss at Nalapani diminished the enthusiasm of opponents of Gurkha.
Prithvi Singh of Kwilligaon/Kwiligaon wrote a letter to Tularam a supporter of British as follows-
“You were telling that we should revolt against Gurkha regime by weapons and we should meet you in Dehradun. Our condition is worse than cow grazers. We were prosperous in Garhwal King Regime. In Gurkha regime, we did not get enough food, enough clothing. I am debt for Rs 500. … Your army could not fight with 400 -500 Gurkha soldiers in Nalapani. How come we could revolt against Gurkha?”

Gurkha were more aggressive after Maubi returned to Dehradun after losing in Nalapani.
They got time for four weeks for collecting food, other materials and repairing damaged wall of Garhi.  Williams wrote in Memoir of Dehradun that Gurkha planned for looting Saharanpur even after British army had captured Dehradun.
In this situation Garhwalis of neighboring regions were afraid helping British. Garhwalis were afraid that if British did not win war Gurkha would punish them and their families severely. Garhwalis were in favor of British but due to Gurkha’s repressive nature they were not favoring British openly. Gurkha started looting Jaunsar Babar from Tehri side.
Frazier started employing Garhwalis who willingly interested joining British establishment and who left Gurkha army too. Even then British could not find local persons for collecting tax from Dehradun till November 1814.

John Premble (Invasion of Nepal) offered details of third attack on Khalanga/Nalapani Gadhi by British army.
For three weeks, Colonel Mawbey waited for bigger canons supply from Delhi. Bigger canons reached to Doon Camp on 24th November. Two light infantry companies, Carpenter battalion reached to camp with four canons of eighteen pounds, two mortars of eight inches too. Colonel Mawbey sent a couple of companies for surrounding Nalapani fort from all sides that Gurkha soldiers don’t run away from territory.  Mawbey sent Ludly to Tharapani hill with soldiers. Major Baldock reached from right side of Tharapani. Captain Buck was sent to Lakhend and Captain Caulmart was sent to Asthal.
That time, British army took another rout for surrounding Nalapani Fort. British army marched through south east of Saung valley (Gdhera). That rout was long and more difficult terrain. However, Gurkha could not watch on the new rout. Army reached slowly , slowly to a small hill (Tappad) one mile and south east of the Nalapani fort. By difficulty soldiers took the two twelve pound canons and four eighteen pound canons in night to the place 250 meter away from fort. By noon of 27th November, British soldiers fired canons on the fort wall and fort wall broke down.
Major Inglebai   reached near the damaged wall and was just to enter inside but got injured and came back. Captain Parker reached to the wall and found that the hole was at higher height. By peering from the hole it was found that below the hole there was ditch and Gurkha were ready with swords to cut the entrants. The soldiers who were on wall or wall of the hole were killed by Gurkha soldiers. Lieutenant Herington was killed by a gun fire on his back by Gurkha gun man. Gurkha were answering British attack by stones, arrows and gun fires,. British army started firing on Gurkha inside the hole.
Captain John Campbell was dead due to arrow attack from Gurkha. The third attack also was failure attack. Lieutenant Laxford was also injured.  Muslim soldiers got scared by failure.
The soldiers of 53 Battalion were not cowered but were inactive or sluggish before Gurkha.  Four European officers were killed and seven officers and 33 soldiers were killed and 636 injured (including 12 sergeants and three band masters). 184 Privates of 53th Battalions, either were injured or disappeared. Totally 864 soldiers were injured in third attack.
Only 250 Gurkha soldiers were alive in Gurkha camp inside Nalapani fort.
On 28th November, Balbhadra Kunwar ordered to take dead bodies of British army. Thirteen dead bodied were taken inside the fort. The body of dead Hairngton was beheaded.

Eden Vansittart in Notes on Nepal page 15, describes a story about a great Gurkha soldier of Khalanga/Nalapani battle. Nepali Lyricist Bal Krishna Sharma and music composer Shiv Shankar created a musical drama ‘Nalapanima’ (In Nalapani) on this story.
The British soldiers were firing guns and canons on the Nalapani fort. There was danger of Gurkhas being killed inside due to debris. A soldier Gurkha soldier came out of Fort with waving his empty hands. British stopped firing. The face of Gurkha soldier was severely injured. The wounded soldier wanted help from British soldiers. British soldiers did aid him first aid for his injury. Gurkha knew the importance of first aid in battle. After taking first aid the Gurkha soldier desired to go back into fort and fight with British army and refused to enter into British army. British soldiers appreciated the devotion of Gurkha for his country.

When that soldier returned back to Garhi, British army again started firing guns and canons on Garhi. By evening of 29th November, east wall of Garhi /Fort was completely damaged. Now, army stopped firing on east wall. It was decided that the canons would be used for damaging south wall of fort. There were gun and canon firing at 2 AM night. Captain Buck was stationed at water source. The inhabitants of fort used to come for taking water at that source. When Gurkha people came for fetching water or taking water British army fired on them and there was firing from both the end. Gurkha returned without taking water.
There was silent for one hour in night . At 3 Am, Gurkha army came out of Garhi and marched towards south. This time Gurkha soldiers were going towards rivulets by taking help of bushes. British army fired on them. Out of 300 soldiers, only 70 or 73 soldiers could flee from that area and others were killed.
Those seventy soldiers did not ask for asylum from British. Their leader Balbhadra was with them
As per folk stories , Balbhadra ( Levanidas) cried and told that it was not possible to be in Garhi and he was leaving Garhi by his own wish. Balbhadra and his soldiers were thirsty. They did not care and marched forward without caring firing from British army. Soldiers were having either naked swords or guns. Balbhadra was leading them from front. He disappeared in dark.

Major Kelley ordered the troop of Grandeur for entering into Fort. A musician from the Band entered into Fort. He saw that there was no single soldier in the Garhi/Fort. He cried “ it is empty, it is empty”.
Then Major Kelly and his troop entered into Fort and captured Nalapani Fort at four Am on 30th November 1814.  It was dark in the fort but human cries were disturbing the troop. Kelly called for lighting and he was shocked to see the pathetic scene. Injured soldiers were crying and there was bad smell everywhere by putrified dead bodies.
The dead body parts of Gurkha soldiers were scattered here and there. A canon was there and seven soldiers were dead nearby canon. The injured people were crying for water. There were 86 dead bodies.
The British armed forced offered them water. Many live injured human were under dead bodies and could not move. They were asking water. British army snet 90 injured Gurkha to hospital for first aid.  97 dead bodies were cremated (burnt). A few dead bodies were buried. Burial was not systematic as it was difficult to dig the pit due to stony base.. British army tried to clean the Fort.
