As British army enters into Kumaon region, Kumaonis were pleased by the news. Dr Dabral wrote that Maularam did not mention about the pleasure of Kumaonis by entry of British army. Maulram was a court poet who praised only his masters. At that time he was serving Nepal government and might be later on under British rule he had hope for going Nepal and would get gifts from Nepal government. That might be the reason Maulram was neutral in his writing about emotions of Kumaonis.
The British source (Atkinson) reveals that Kumaonis welcomed British army. In any case, Kumaonis did not resist for Nepal attack too and just accepted Nepalese as ruler. Atkinson wrote that Kumaonis brought food articles for British Army personnel and Grass for army horses. Kumaonis cooperated with British.

Gurkha/Nepalese army failed in stopping British army entering in Bhujan/Bujan and Chaumukhia /Chamua).  Gurkha/Nepalese army made strategy for stopping British Army march at Kumpur/Ranikhet. British army had to go ahead of the hill Chamua/Chaumukhiya to the  Katallekh Hill. The Katallekh Hill reached to near Almora east. The narrow lane on the Katallekh shrine was safe for British army.
As per strategy, Gurkha/Nepalese army reached to Kumpur (Ranikhet region) Hill at height of 5983 Feet. Gurkha army erected Fence there that was opposite of Chaumukhia /Chamua Hill.  Kumpur camp was important from battle point of view as British army had to cross Kumpur ( in Ranikhet) hill for reaching Almora city.
The Gurkha/Nepalese Army camp was in such a place that Lieutenant Colonel Gardner Army had to head on with Nepalese Army for reaching Almora. Gardner asked maximum numbers of soldiers for reaching at his Camp. Gardner asked soldiers of Kota and Kath ki Nav camps to reach his camp at Chamua /Chaumukhia. Only fifty soldiers and one police inspector was kept each in both the camps. Tiil that time, food supply also did not reach to Chamua/Chaumukhiya Camp .
On 18th February, British army camped at Kapina Hill that was nearer to Kampur Hill. The British Camp was just opposite of fenece of Nepalese Army Camp.  There were 1500 Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers in the camp. It was difficult to win over Gurkha army at that place. British army was also not having appliances for  breaking the fence of camp.
From 28th February to 22nd March 1815, British Army had to stay in that Camp at Kapina Hill. One day, a few Nepalese soldiers attacked on British camp with Khukari (Swords). Rohilla soldiers defeated Nepalese soldiers. Second day, 600 Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers attacked on British camp. Same numbers of Rohilla soldiers defeated Nepalese soldiers. By 8th March , more 850 Rohila soldiers reached to British Army camp. Now, L. Colonel Gardner decided to attack on Gurkha/Nepalese Camp.

Between Kumpur and Almora there is Syahi/Siyahi Devi temple hill that’s height would be 7186 Feet. Kosi River flows between Syahi/Siyahi Devi Hill and Almora city. It was supposed that Nepalese would kept army on Syahi/Siyahi Devi temple hill.  However, due to unknown reasons, Gurkha/Nepalese commanders did not keep army at Syahi Devi Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Gardner decided for occupying Syahi/Siyahi Hill for strategic purpose. By occupying Syahi /Siyahi hill , it was necessary that Gurkha/Nepalese army would vacate Kumpur Camp. Or there would abe situation for capturing Almora city.
Bumshah sent his whole army to Kumpur and the soldiers in Almora city were in few numbers. On 22nd March night, Gardner sent 1200 soldiers towards Syahi /Siyahi Devi temple hill. Those soldiers came to Panor Gadan (rivulet). That Rivulet Gadan meet to Ulavgad Gadan which meets to Kosi then.  In morning for destracting Gurkha soldiers, British army did drama for attacking on Kumpur Camp. It was done that Gurkha/Nepalese could not be attracted to activities being done on Syahi Devi Hill region.  On 23rd noon, the information reached to Gardner that 400 soldiers reached to Baol and they established a Camp there. Baol was 10 miles away from British camp and 4 miles left from Kumpur.  The soldiers those reached to Ulavgad valley they started to walk over on Syahi/Siyahi Devi hill. After crossing Suri village British soldiers reached a temple and camped there on Syahi Devi Hill top . Late noon Gurkha /Nepalese army came to know that British occupied Syahi /Siyahi Devi Hill top.
On 24th March Gurkha/Nepalese army ran away from Kumpur camp through Riuni and Katarmal hills for protecting Almora city. Before vacating Kumpur Gurkha /Nepalese soldiers burnt Wood fences of Kumpur camp. The Syahi Devi Hill occupying campaign by British was successful .

                                 Cooperation from Kumaonis
Kumaonis started cooperating with British before the war began. Kumaon people were ready to help British by all means for freeing them from Gurkha/Nepalese rule. Harsh Dev Joshi helped British in getting Kumaonis cooperation. Kumaonis became road guides for British army. British army paid attention in luring Kumaoni Brahmins as they were influential in getting support from the people.
When British army reached to Katarmal and Nepalese soldiers ran away from Kumpur, By March 1815, 300  Kumaoni soldiers left from Nepalese army and returned to their respective villages.
Bamshah had around 1000 Nepalese soldiers for defending Almora city

                                      Irregular Army of Hearsay
Hearsay was famous by Hansi Saab. British commanders asked Hearsay for appointing 1550 soldiers irregular army for capturing Garhis of Garhwal.  Later on, he was asked to work under Lieutenant Colonel Gardner for Kumaon Campaign. Gardner could organize his army within a month but Hearsay had three months for appointing irregular army.  Hearsay appointed lesser expert Rohila soldiers (Bareli).  He appointed 1500 soldiers within a month but took 4 weeks for training.    On third month, those soldiers were supposed to fight with Gurkha/Nepalese army. However, he was dropped on last day of third month.
Hearsay was unstable and wanted fame by quick means. He wanted Dehradun Jagir by working faster means. He was not visionary. Hearsay used to boost that he would defeat Gurkha/Nepalese army within a month.

British strategists instructed Hearsay for capturing ‘Timla Ghat’ on the north of Pilibhit , heading to Kali River valley and destroying Jhula (rope bridges ) on the river. By destroying rope bridges on Kali River would make difficulties for Hasti Dal army crossing Kali River and entering into Kumaon.  However, in early February 1815, a few prisoners of Bareli Jail attacked on jail guards.  Prisoners took away weapons and freed other prisoners too. By night, after capturing weapons, the prisoners were busy in fighting with guards sent by British command. Later on prisoners escaped by leaping jail walls.  That was the reason that Hearsay had to delay his campaign.  The army company of Shahjhanpur that was supposed to company with Hearsay was kept for while for administrating in the locality. Therefore, army company of Shahjahanpur could not report to Hearsay as per schedule. British commander instructed Hearsay for appoing new 300 irregular Rohila soldiers.
The resposnibilty of Hearsay was to defend the Ghats of Kali River spreading 43 Kos. Hearsay had to defend Ghat of Kali River. However, Hearsay was in hurry to win over Gurkha that he could get Jagir in Dehradun. When on 13th February 1815, Hearsay reached to Bilhari of Pilibhit his 150 soldiers out of 1500 soldiers could not march. Those soldiers were kept at some strategic places as under –
10 Soldiers in Pilibhit for defending Kamsariyat
50 Soldiers in Shahjhanpur for protecting Jail
16 Soldiers in Fatehgarh  for protection of battle articles
5 Soldiers in Bareli for appointing new soldiers
5 Soldiers in Bareli  for protecting soldiers and dresses etc
50 Soldiers in  Balihari for protection of Depot
12 ill Soldiers in Balihari
Before, Hearsay reached Balihari, Gurkha soldiers ran away from Balihari. Hearsay established his camp in Balihari. Hearsay instructed his Gun powder making workers for producing gun powder, On 13th Gardner also captured Chilkiya Ghat. Gurkha soldiers put poison in wells before leaving Bilhari. By taking poisonous water 78 soldiers of Hearsay fell ill.

Hearsay could win only when there was sure defense for Kali valley. Hearsay came to know that there were 700 soldiers with Nepal resident Hastidal in Doti (now Nepal). Chief assistant of Nepal Resident Hastidal was Vikram Shah - a family member of ex-Doti King. Vikram Shah became Jagir owner of Nepal government. Vikram Shah also got Jagor of a couple of villages in Tarai. When Tarai came under British, Vikram Shah became Jagirdar of British in Tarai. Hearsay guessed that Hastidal with 500 soldiers could come to Kumaun and leaving 200 soldiers with Vikram Shah. Hearsay declared through British that if Vikram Shah oppose British his Jagir in Tarai would be dismissed. Hearsay declared to Tharu people of Tarai that they should not pay tax to Vikram Shah.
Hearsay pulled attention of British that British did not have soldiers in Bareli district. Hearsay got permission for appointing irregular force. Hearsay appointed a Rohila sardar Amankhan as leader of 200 irregular Rohila soldiers. Before, 1803, Gurkha captured Jagir of a small King (Under Nabab). That king appointed Amankhan for recapturing his Jagir from Gurkha. Hearsay thought that Amankhan was best choice for attacking on Doti. Hearsay paid Rs 200 to Amankhan as advance and instructed Amankhan for attacking on Doti. The idea was to engage Hastidal in Doti.
However, in past British appointed 500 Rohila irregular soldiers under Prithvipati Shah the ex King of Doti. Hearsaya advised British commander that PrithviPati Shah should attack on Doti with Aman Khan. However, British commander did not send Prithvipati Shah for Doti campaign.

On 13th February 1815, Hearsay reached Bilhari from Pilibhit with his army. Hearsay stayed for a week in Bilhari. Hearsay had 14 copies of ‘Declaration for Kumaunis by Gardner’, 5 copies of pamphlets ‘Hukum Ishthar’ and 4 letters by Harsh Dev Joshi for influential Kumaunis. Hearsay distributed those copies in Kali-Kumaun belt. Within a week of distribution of those documents, Fartyal, Mahar, Tadagi major group leaders of Kali –Kumaon with 98 Topidar Gunmen reached to Hearsay camp. All showed enthusiasm for British army success in Kumaun before Hearsay. By 19th February 1815, there were 150 Topidhari Gunmen from Kumaon with Hearsay.  Kumauni labor started increasing in British army day by day.
A man Daulat Singh (Perhaps Tadagi) reached to Hearsay camp with his 200- 300 soldiers with weapons. Daulat Singh asked for Guns , and Gun powder. Hearsay fulfilled demand of Daulat Singh. However, Hearsay could not pay cash to Daulat Singh.
British army command permitted Hearsay appointing irregular Hill men soldiers. Hearsay started appointing soldiers from Hill. At least 10 Hill soldiers were there in his each company. Those irregular Hill soldiers were there to replace ill soldiers and soldiers leaving Britsh army.

On 16th February 1815, Hearsay got information that Gurkha were planning for vacating two Garhis of Timlaghati. The Garhi of Timalghati was at height of 3840 feet and was a strategic Garhi of the region. On 17th February 1815, Hearsay ordered to his 100 soldiers and 150 soldiers of Kusumakhan Goldar for attacking on that Garhi. He arranged elephants and camel for supply. Those soldiers captured both the Garhis of Timlaghati. The Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers ran away from those Garhis towards Katolgarh.
Hearsay instructed to keep a few soldiers in those Garhis and ordered for others to follow running Gurkha /Nepalese soldiers and capturing Champawat. Hearsay army captured  Kailaghati Garhi on the same day. Hearsay kept a few soldiers on Kalaghati Garhis too.
On 19th February 1815, Hearsay sent another company for helping soldiers sent for capturing Champawat. He sent 150 Hill gun men for capturing Katolgarh. Hearsay distributed pamphlets in Hindi among Kumaunis. Those pamphlets influenced Kumaunis.
On 19th February 1815, Hearsay sent a letter for Gardner –
“There are a few supporters of Gurkha/Nepal in Kumauni regions. As soon as my Hill men would reach there they would be supporting British. I already have offered them Rs 650 as reward in advance. I also handed over them one Mond gun powder and 2000 bullets. Those Hill men promised for bring 600 Loaders.  They have taken token money in advance. I left 50 soldiers for defending Bilhari Fort Garhi. As soon as I get loaders and animal carriers I shall start campaign for Bacchuti, near Timlaghati. Then I shall march for Champawat from Bachhuti.”
In Bilhari, Hearsay army manufactured Gun powder in good quantity. However, he did not have Plumbus and hard cash at that time.
