.         Hearsay used two words ‘Kumauni soldiers’ and Hill soldiers in his letters. Most probably his meaning for Kumauni was for people of Kali Kumaon and Hill men means people from Hills of others regions (Dabral, U I. part 5 page 457).
Next day, Hearsay sent an army company of 150 Hill Gunmen with food supply for one week to Timalaghati. This army company captured Timlaghati and crossing a Hill top reached to Ladhiya River valley. There , that Hill army company met the advance party of Hearsay army. There were 500 soldiers in Hearsay army including Kumauni Gunmen. Bahadur Singh was leading that fourth Army Company. Pande described Bahadur Singh as Mahra leader. While Hearsay and Atkinson supposed that he was Subedar of fourth Company.
Subedar Bahadur Singh army marched to Kandev Hill for capturing Champawat. In that road, a Gurkha Commander Kalidhar was with his 100 soldiers in ‘Badapeeple’ hill near Buroli.
Kalidhar tried for stopping Bahadur Sing Campaign.
On 25th February, Bahadur Singh with his army went ahead and attacked Badapeeple from back side. Kalidhar ran away from the Fortress leaving a few animals as goat etc.  Bahadur Singh army followed Kalidhar soldiers. A portion of Kumauni soldiers of Kaldhar camp met with Hearsay camp and other Kuamuni soldiers of Kaldhar remained with Kalidhar. Kalidhar soldiers took shelter in Katolgarh.
On 28th February 1815, Hearsay army led by Bahadur Singh captured Champawat the old capital of Kumaon.

Bahadur Singh Company reached to Katolgarh area by following Kalidhar the Gurkha commander. Bahadur Singh could not stop Kalidhar for taking shelter in Katolgarh Garhi the strongest Fort of Kumaun. Kataolgarh fort was in five-six miles away north of Champawat. Hearsay could capture Katolgarh fort only when he would have stopped the food and water supply to fort and would surround Katolgarh Fort from all sides. It was necessary to destruct wall of fort by guns.
Hearsay did not have so many soldiers and neither guns for destroying Fort wall. Lieutenant Colonel Gardner had been reminding Hearsay for just defending Kali Nadi River valley but Hearsay instructed Bahadur Singh for attacking Katolgarh Fort. Hearsay was sure that within 8 days Bahadur Singh would capture Katolgarh Fort and Kalidhar would surrender then.    (Saxena)

Hearsay captured Champawat due to Kumauni fighters and Subedar Bahadur Singh. Hearsay wrote a letter to Gardner on 1st March 1815 wherein he clearly noted that the win was solely due to Kuamuni soldiers and not due to Rohila soldiers.
Hearsay demanded money and gun, bullets as gifts for rewarding Kumaunis. Hearsay tried for purchasing guns from Pilibhit for gifting to Kuamunis. Hearsay proposed that British should oofer Rs 50/- , Dushala and a turban to each Group leaders of Fartyal, Mahra, Tadagi etc groups.  He proposed rewards for soldiers who participated in winning Champawat and other influential people of Kumaon too.

286  Kumaonis Loaders reached at  East India Company Camp in End of February . Those loaders promised Hearsay for bringing more 100 loaders from Hills by 1st March and 200 additional Hill  loaders after Hearsay reaching to Champawat. In second week of March, Hearsay reached to Champawat with soldiers and supply. Hearsay established supply depot at Champwat Fort. Hearsay wanted to reserve food supply  for one month for 1500 soldiers. Hearsay instructed loaders for bringing supply from Bilhari to Champawat. Hearsay was hopeful that at least within 10 days full supply would reach to Champawat from Bilhari camp.
Hearsay army did not have Guns (Topen). The army did not have gun powder etc too. By fast spending nature, he did not have enough money too and had to stay in Kailaghati. There was only one European officer Lieutenant Martindale in his army and Hearsay sent him for surrounding Katolgarh with 500 soldiers. Hearsay had to keep 300 soldiers to protect communication line from Pilibhit to Champawat.  There were 300 soldiers in Champawat. Hearsay could keep only 300 soldiers in Kali River valley.  By appointing Kumaunis gun men he had 500 soldiers in Bilhari for keeping eyes on Hastidal ‘s movement.

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

In early days of February there was information to Hearsay that Gurkha/Nepalese are planning war planning in Achham of Doti region and Commander Hastidal was ready for crossing kali River for freeing British captured region.  On 19th February 1815, Hearsay instructed Amankhan  the commander of 200 irregular Rohila soldiers for crossing Kali River at Mundiyaghat and enter into Doti. On the same day, Hearsay requested Gardner for sending Prithvipati Shah the ex King of Doti to reach Doti with soldiers companying Amankhan. The idea was that byt enterance of Amankhan and Prithvipati Shah , Hastidal would be engaged in Doti.
In March, Hearsay paid advance to  Kusumkhan for appointing 250 soldiers for protection of Mundiyaghat , Kali River.  The soldiers (exaggerated figure- around 600-700) were trying for crossing Kali River at  Mundiyagha. However, Nepalese soldiers could not cross Kali River. Kusumkhan got information of Hastidal coming to Kali River. Kusumkhan requested Hearsay for more soldiers. Hearsay instructed for 150 soldiers reaching to help Kusumkhan.
Hearsay requested Gardner for attacking Doti immediately. As if Doti was not captured, Nepalese army could reach to Kumaon and then it was difficult for capturing Kumaon. Hearsay informed Gardner that around 300 Nepalese soldiers had already crossed Kali from Nepal region into Kumaon region. Hearsay argued that by the arrival of more army men from Nepal would disturb the communication line from Pilibhit to Kumaon. Hearsay also informed about fear of Dacoits looting supply at Bareli depot.
However, Amankhan could not appoint more than 50 soldiers. Amankhan reached to Unlaghat of Kali River  with 52 soldiers. Amankhan dag ditches for protecting Gurkha army. Vikramshah was there with Nepalese army  in Nepal region at Kali River bank.   Amankhan sent a lteer to hearsay that Jamindar of Doti wrote him letter that as soon as I (Amankhan) would reach to Doti Jamindar would help me (Amankhan). Amankhan assured and requested to Hearsay for sending 800 soldiers or at least 600 soldiers for capturing Doti.
Trusting on Amankhan, Hearsay requested Gardner for sending more troops for Doti campaign.
In Katolgarh region where British army camps were there, Nepalese soldiers put poison in Water well or ponds.  Out of all 2 soldiers died and 97 soldiers became severely ill. 7 Kumauni soldiers also die by taking poisonous water. Hearsay could assure soldiers with difficulty.
On 14th March Nepalese army attacked on British army at Brahmdev Mandi (Kali River bank). British army defeated that attack. However, British army had to make severe losses. The uncle of Prrithvipati Shah was killed in the battle. Jagjit Shah the brother of Prithvipati Shah was with Prithvipati and Prithvipati was injured. Prithvipati had to return to Pilibhit.
Therefore, British postponed for attacking on Doti.

The irregular army of Hearsay was scattered here and there in March 1815.  Hearsay could have only less than 300 soldiers for protecting strategic Ghats /ports of Kali River adjoining to Nepal/Doti.
On 31st March 1815, his spies from Champawat informed Hearsay that 500 Gurkha soldiers crossed Kali River and entered into Kumaon that is 14 miles north of Kali River. Local spy informed that Gurkha were building fence in that place and the place was Garhi of Fartyal group. In fact Fartyal group was opponent group of Harshdev Joshi. That means that Gurkha spread rumors for deceiving hearsay. Hearsay sent that spy to Katolgarh.  Hearsay also marched in that night with 270 soldiers to the place sited by the spy. He had opinion that his soldiers would defeat Nepalese soldiers easily. Hearsay demanded 400 soldiers from Katolgarh.
In evening the information became true. Hastidal entered into Kumaon by crossing Kali River   below that place sited by spy with his 1500 soldiers. Hearsay instructed his soldiers to stop marching of Hastidal. On 2nd April 1815, there was fierce fight between army of Hastidal and hearsay irregular soldiers at Khilpati five miles away from Champawat.
The gun powder of Hearsay soldiers finished within short period. Hastidal army killed most of soldiers of Hearsay. Two brothers in laws –Nabajade of Cambai were there in battle.  Gurkha army killed one brother in law of Hearsay. Second brother in law of Hearsay slipped into valley and died there. Gulam haider Khan a campainion of Nababjade ran away from battle. Gurkha soldiers injured Hearsay badly. Gurkha soldiers started cutting head of injured and dead British irregular soldiers. Gurkha soldiers met Hearsay and brought them before hastidal. Once, in past hearsay saved life of Hastidal from a bear. Hastidal did not kill Hearsay but arrested him and brought Hearsay to Almora.

Hearsay informed Gardner by a letter on 18th June 2015 that the main reason for his defeat by Gurkha was non cooperation and deceptive methods by Fartyal Group. The group leader of Fartyal group was Bhana Kultiya of a village near Champawat. Mahar Group members also told that help of Fartyal group for  Hastidal was main reason of British defeat.  There was no doubt that Fartyal group was having doubts on British Company because British was having Harshdev Joshi on its side.
According to Atkinson, the Gurkha soldiers were more courageous than irregular Hearsay soldiers. No doubt, local Kumaonis were eager for helping British but locals were not strong enough for resisting Gurkha army.

On 5th April 1815, Hastidal reached Almora before Bamshah with arrested Hearsay after defeating Hearsay and arresting him. On the same night, there were gun fires from Lalmandigarh (Fort in Almora) celebrating defeating Hearsay army -the British army. British informers sent message to British commanders about celebration.
On 6th April 1815, Bamshah sent a letter to Edward Gardner as –
“ You might have received information that  when my brother Hastidal was crossing Kali River, Hearsay (Hansi Saab) tried stopping my brother. My brother defeated Hearsay and arrested him. My brother called doctor for injured Hearsay but Hearsay requested his own doctors and their medicines. My brother allowed personal servants of Hansi Saab for taking doctors of Hearsay and medicines.  Hansi Saab is with my brother and every care is being taken for Hansi Saab.“
On 12nd April, with pride, Hastidal entered into Lalmandi Garh with Hearsay (Hansi Saab). In honor for Hastidal, gunmen fired guns. British informers sent information that there are not more than 400 soldiers and not more than 150 gun men with Hastidal. Did Hastidal leave other soldiers in Kali River valley or the estimate of Hearsay spies about soldiers with Hastidal was wrong? Most probably, Hastidal would not leave his majority of army in Kali River valley. British informers sent information that there were less than 2000 soldiers with Bamshah and Bamshah did not have food for them for long. The informers sent information that soldiers were getting less food and many were running from Almora due to hunger.

                        Appointment of Lieutenant Colonel Nichols
Hastings understood that British would not need soldiers from central India for capturing Almora.  Therefore, he instructed for sending regular army men for Kumaon Campaign. It was not possible for attacking Kathmandu due to inactivity of British army of East side. Now, Nepal could post its army to western side (Kumaon- Garhwal). Therefore , it was wise that Kumaon was captured immediately.
Therefore, in March 1815, Hastings decided for appointing Lieutenant Colonel Nichols for Kumaon campaign. Nichols had reputation as visionary, courageous and bold officer. Nichols was 37 years old but got experience of fight in fierce battles. He worked in Western India and other parts of world. He was deputed second time in India in 1813. He was cleaver for understanding others.
