Muslims started killing Hindus in West Punjab before freedom declaration. Muslims also attacked Garhwalis living in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and other parts of West Punjab. Garhwalis started coming back to Garhwal from May 1947 onwards. Muslims looted and killed many Garhwalis. Many Garhwalis did suicides for saving their honor . Garhwali leadership in Garhwal did nothing for those suffering Garhwalis in West Punjab.
Muslims stopped business with Hindu businessmen at all Hindus started migrating to India. around 300 Garhwalis migrated to India from Pakistan or West Punjab.

Garhwalis of Garhwal were getting news of Pakistani Muslims killing Hindus in Pakistan and other places. Thousands of Hindu refuses were living in Garhwal.
on 2nd September 1937, Many Garhwalis returned Kotdwara Garhwal from experiencing plights on the way from Quetta to India and then refugee camps . Non Garhwali refugees were also there in Kotdwara and other centers. Refugees attacked on Muslims properties. Those refugees were sent to Dogadda by Lorries. After reaching to Dogadda a group of refugees burnt Mosque. Due to brick mosque, only doors were burnt.
After that, refugees started looting Muslim shops. Many Muslims escaped from Dogadda to jungles a precautionary major. Nearby villagers took benefits and they loote Muslims shops too. There were 19 Muslims shops. Only four remained safe.
Magistrate ordered article 144 in Dogadda and Kotdwara.
Since, there was no customary enmities between Muslim and Garhwali communities , less people attacked Muslims. However, there were some unwanted incidents as in Ramgaon near Gumkhal, but police took action in time and no harm was there.

In Gorkhali or Gorkha Rule on Garhwal Chapter, this author already narrated the details of Gorkha capturing Uttarakhand and in 1815, East India Company /British capturing Garhwal and Kumaon. The Governer Genral Hestings divided Uttarakhand as follows –
Dehradun in East India Company /British Rule – British captured Dehraun in October 1814
2- Garhwal region of East of Mandakini and Alaknanda Rivers under British Rule (Now, three districts Pauri, Chamoli and Rudraprayag)
3- British offered barring Rawain Garh, Balance part of Garhwal Kingdom to Sudarshan Shah the prince of Garhwal Kingdom (todays Tehri and Uttarkashi districts) .
British Army Officers handed over the Tehri and Uttarkashi to King Sudarshan Shah.

After getting the partial kingdom, King Sudarshan Shah had problem of capital for the new kingdom. King Sudarshan Shah wished for residing in Shrinagar and he requested to Governor General. The Governor General did not allow Sudarshan Shah residing in Shrinagar due to future administrative problems ( Dewar)
King and his advisors again wished for establishing Barahat as capital but Rawain region was not under new Kingdom. King selected Tehri village at the junction of Bhagirathi and Bhilangna for new Capital. Sudarshan Shah founded new capital on Falgun ( February-March) 1815.
There are many stories behind naming Tehri from words as Teeree, tihari, Tipari etc.
Religious Importance of Tehri
In Garhwal, there is religious importance for Confluences of Alaknanda, Bhagirathi and Ganga Rivers with other rivers. Tehri being at confluence of Bhagirathi and Bhilangana Rivers had religious importance for ages. There was a swinging bridge on Bhilangna in Gorkha period. People from nearby villages used to come for taking religious bath on auspicious days as Makar Sankranti, Baishakhi and people used to pay homage to their forefathers here too through ritual performances.
The highway from hrinagar to nalapani (Dehradun) was through Bhilangana ( Shrinagar, Maletha , Takolgad, Tehri , Chamuwakhal, Banali, Ragargaon and Doon valley.
The turist highway to Gangotri and Yamunotri used to pass through Tehri .According to Kedarkhaand puran, Vashishtha the family guru of Ramachandra did Tapasya in Bhilangana bank with Bhill and Kirat. (Dabral, Uttarakhand ka Itihas part 6, page 26)

In later stages of Tehri Riyasat, administration and common people started calling it Tehri . However, the original name was Teeri (टीरी ).
Contemporary Poet Maulram described it as Teeree-
टीरी ऊपर सहर बसाया
(garh kavyavansh rajvansh kavya 63 a)
Moorcraft in Travels in Hindostan Feb 1820(page 14) mentioned caital as teeree and Sudarshan Shah as King of Teeree.
Even, Today,, common people call it by Teeree or Teeree Gadhwal. People call new tehri city as Nayi Teeree.
There are references that people started calling Teeree as Tehri /Tihri as found in poem by famous poet Gumani Pant –
जनराज सुदार्शंशाह पुरी , टिहरी इस कारण नाम रह्यो .
Many times, people or administratively Their Riyasat was named with Garhwal as –Their Garhwal or Native Garhwal.
The English Pre mutiny department of Kumaun and Dehradun opened files in the name – Garhwal raj.
In 1835, in an official letter to L.C. Young , Agra East India company secretary Scout mentioned ‘ King of Garhwal ‘ for Sudarshan Shah . (Saksena , historical papers related to Kumaon page 225)
‘Ilaka Garhwal –Tehri ‘is mentioned in the coins by King Bhawani Shah.

In 1920, Moorcroft wrote ( Travels in Hindustan page 14,) that in east of Sudarshan Shah Kingdom , there are Mandakini and Alaknanda Rivers. In west of Tehri Garhwal kingdom , there was Negva Pargana, in sout it was Taovan Hills and in north there was Nelang. The length from East to west was 100 miles and width from north to south was 50-60 miles. British government handed over the regions Sarchhola, west and Shilanto Khand to Kyoyal King. British offere some part of Rawai to a Thakur. In north, the Tibbet border was there for Tehri Garhwal Kingdom. There was a main pass for Tibet and three small passes for entering Tibet those were closed in winter due to heavy snow fall.
Even after John Adam writing to Fraser, there was no proper land survey of Tehri Garhwal. Some west of Mandakini was also part of British Garhwal.

Great Himalayan Shrines are spread all over Tehri Riyasat (Tehri – Uttarkashi Garhwal)
Most of Himalayan areas of Their Riyasat are covered by snow all the time. The most adventurous, enigmatic, mysterious and beautiful shrines of Garhwal Himalaya are in Tehri Riyasat (Tehri and Uttarkashi) .
Changsil mountain range – Changsil mountain range is between Tons and Pabar Rivers. Sub shrines of Changsil are Saukantha and Manjhibaun . Changsil Hills are borders of Uttarakhand and Himachal. One shrine of Changsil is Yamuna shrine Yamunoti is in Changsil hills. The south shrine is called Swargarohani shrine. There are snow glaciers in Bandarpunchh hill range
Ganmukh - Gaumukh shrine I higher than Bandarpunchh hill shrine .The east of Bhagirathi River origin touches to Kedarkantha. Bhagirathi and Bhilangana Rivers originate from south but lower range of Gaumukh hills .
There is rain, snow fall, summer in Mid Himalayan range . Kandalidhar, Hari ki Dun , Yamunotri Kantha, Kuthasukantha, Jarmoladhar etc hills are in Mid Himalayan range .

Pavar River- Pavar River emerges from hills of Mahasu and kinnar Region (Himachal) and precedes to Khashdhar, Rodu, Arakot, Bangan and meets Tons River near Tyuni. Its associate Rivers are Kotogad and Kashtga. Pavar is famous for its fishes .
Tons River- Kedarkhand Puran mentions this River as Tamsa River. Tons emerges from west hills of bandarpunchh. When Rupi and Supi Rivers meet at Netari the river is called Tons from here. Tons flow towards south passing through Ador, Badasu, Singtur regions. Tons becomes border of Tehri and Sirmaur after Thadiyar. Tons River meets Yamuna near Kalsi (Dehradun) . There many associate rivers or rivulets of Tons and all are source of irrigation.
Yamuna River – The rivulets emerging from Syuni-Sumeru hills the branches of Bandarpunchh mountain make Yamuna River. The origin of Yamuna was recorded three feet long and 6 inches deep (Minya Prem Singh). Yamuna flows through Geenthbjari, Banal, Dhakral, Badkot and Mungarsanti Pattis in Tehri Garhwal and from Kunva, it starts flowing south direction. Hanuman ganga meets Yamuna at Kharsali . At the border of Tehri Garhwal, Bhadarigad and Amlargad rivulets meet Yamuna. Garud Ganga, Bajrigad, Badiyargad, BnalgadKamal nadi , Rikhnalgad, Barunigad, Adaogad rivulets are associate Rivulets of Yamuna River. In Dehradun or jaunsar, Yamuna is bordering medium of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh.
