Major Gillespie was unsatisfied with the number of soldiers he was provided for Dehradun campaign.  Hastings sent more troops for Gillespie. However, the troops could not reach in time. Before, extra troops reached to Meerut, the Meerut battalion had to march for Dehradun.
Major Gillespie ordered his assistant Colonel Maubi for marching to Mohan Ghat on 20th October 1814 for capturing Dehradun. Colonel had one thousand soldiers, two companies of cavalry. There was army of Rav Jeewan Singh the son Khedi ruler Rav Bahadur Singh. With the help of Rav Bahadur Singh, the Gujjars , Rangharh, Rajputs of Saharanpur, Haridwar used to loot Dehradun region. Garhwal King Lalit Shah offered two villages to Rav Bahadur Singh for stopping the looting in Dehradun.  Gurkha captured those two villages and Rav Jeewan  Singh was anxious for getting back those two villages of Doon valley. That was reason that Jeewan Singh was helping British.
The troop of colonel Maubi reached from Saharanpur to Kheri Ghate on the evening of 20th October 1814. Colonel camped outside of human less Kheri town, On21st October 1814; the troop marched to Mohan Ghate. The road was having spiky shrubs. There were two tight valleys and British Army had apprehension that Gurkha army would block the roads in small valleys. Colonel Maubi went ahead inside valleys dividing his army into two sub battalions. Gurkha ran away from their Military stations and rode on a hill ahead of Mohan Ghate. Captain Frost captured the hill where Gurkha soldiers took shelter. Captain Frost informed colonel Maubi about capturing Mohan Ghat sidle. Maubi received the information in mid night.
The troop led by Maubi started the march one hour before sun rise. The road for reaching Mohan Ghat was only three and half miles but there were spiky shrubs, on rivulets there were stones and other hurdles. At 11 Am, Maubi troop reached at Mohan Ghat sidle. After two hours, British army reached to Khurbura, Dehradun. Army camped in Khurbura ground. The ground was nothing but a forest or semi forests having Sal trees and shrubs and wild animals. British army did not get any Gurkha soldiers on the road from Mohan Ghat to Khurbura, Dehradun (John Premble, Walton, Williams).

People from Dehradun ran away before British army entered into Dehradun.  People took shelter into nearby forests.
British army sent announcement for Garhwali people in English, Persian, Hindustani and Garhwali languages (Atkinson). The exact wordings are not available the meaning of those announcements was as follows-
The worried British government was watching the repression and suppression of Gurkha on Garhwalis. British had cordial diplomatic relation with Gurkha and it was not possible for interference. British Government had to be a silence witness of suppression of Gurkha rule on Garhwalis. Now, Gurkha had crossed the limit and taking violent methods, British took the step for its honor and had to attack Gurkha.
Now, British government wished to take best uses of this opportunity of freeing Garhwalis from Gurkha Rule. British government sent British army for dispatching Gurkha from Garhwal and freeing Garhwalis. Garhwalis are requested to cooperate and help the British army and do not resist British Army by any means. Garhwalis are asked to accept the British rule. British Government was  liberal and would protect the wealth and lives of Garhwalis.

The East India Company advised Sudarshan Shah for companying with British Army in Khalanga Fort (Dehradun) Capturing campaign. He was asked to provoke   Garhwalis against Gurkha. He was assured for getting back his Kingdom. Sudarshan Shah reached to Dehradun with his friends and associates (John Premble). Sudarshan Shah already sent letters to influential Garhwalis for helping British in dispatching Gurkha from Garhwal (Tehri Riyasat Archives).
Garhwalis of Dehradun were aware about British Political and Army Power. Those influential Garhwalis were supporting Gurkha. After receiving letter from Sudarshan shah most of influential Garhwalis left supporting Gurkha. They met British officers. The villagers who ran to forests before British could reach to Dehradun returned  to their respective villages.
After getting assurance from Sudarshan Shah, Shivram, Kashiram , Frazer  and Tulram , villagers started  living normal life. Now, they were assured that Gurkha would not harass them when there are British in Dehradun.
Harsh dev Joshi did not come to Dehradun as he was more interested in freeing Kumaon. Shiv ram, kashiram, Asadu Negi and Jeewan Singh were with Sudarshan Shah. Mahant Harsewak Ram of Guru Ram Ray Darbar also helped Sudarshan Shah (Archives of Tehri Riyasat).
Within two days of arrival of British army in Dehradun, there was calm and peace in Dehradun. British army planned for capturing Khalanga Fort and the villagers of  Lakhend, Kharsali and Ashthan helped British army in walking towards Khalanga in Night time.

Gurkha Army in Khalanga Garhi (Nalapani Garhi)

                            Khalanga Campaign -9

History of Gorkha /Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -178

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)
According to Captain Eden Vansittart (Notes on Gurkhas), there were   600 soldiers in Khalanga Garhi (Nalapani Garhi). While other scholars stated that there were 600 children, women, men and soldiers in Garhi and Parkhal of Nalapani. According to Premble, the numbers of soldiers would not be more than 300 in the Garhi.
According to Williams and Walton, there were 300 -4000 Gurkha soldiers and Garhwali soldiers in Garhi. Minya Prem Singh and Archives of Tehri Riyasat also support that Garhwali soldiers were also there in sizable numbers. Atkinson informed that Gurkhas appointed Kumauni and Garhwali soldiers in the Army.
Balbhadra was the commander of Gurkha soldiers of Khalanga Garhi. Balbhadra was son of daughter of  Amar Singh Thapa. Soldiers respected Balbhadra. After Nepalese war, Balbhadra  joined Ranjit Singh Army and he was having army of 800 Gurkha  , Kumauni and Garhwali soldiers.
In history of Political and Military Transactions, Pricep writes that Amar Singh wrote letter from Malau after the Khalanga war that Out Khuka had so much power that less than Gurkha 500 soldiers destroyed 3 or 4 thousand British Army soldiers. Amar Singh wrote that there were less Old region Gurkha soldiers in Gurkha –Burkha Companies. Na dthere were Garhwali soldiers.
It means that Balbhadra had around 500 soldiers and had courage to fight with mighty British Army.

British Army camped at Khurbura Ground on 21st October 1814 at around four o clock.  After Army camping, Colonel Maubi went towards Khalanga Garhi on horse for inspecting the situation. His path finder and path guides reached near Khalanga after walking five miles from Khurbura. It was evening and they could not watch Garhi clearly. They came to know that still the fort building work was on in Garhi. Colonel Maubi was sure that it was easy to capture the Khalanga Fort.
After reaching back to the Camp, colonel Maubi wrote a letter for Balbhadra and sent the letter with his official messenger. Jeewan Singh was the path guide for messengers. Colonel requested to surrender without any bloodshed.
The messengers reached Khalanga Garhi at mid night. As per folk story (John Premble), Balbhadra did not read the letter and tore the letter before messengers and told that there was no custom of opening the letter and replying letter at mid night. Balbhadra sent message for Colonel Maubi that he (Balbhadra) would meet Colonel at Maubi’s camp.

Next morning, colonel Maubi and his associates again visited Khalanga hills. Maubi was afraid in forest road that hiding in shrubs Gurkha soldiers would attack them. Colonel inspected the Garhi with finer details. He made decision to attack Garhi with full force.
On the same night (22nd October 1814), the battalion of colonel carpenter also reached to Khurbura. Now, Maubi had 13000 artery soldiers and 300 cavalry.

On 24 October at 4.30 AM, Colonel Maubi sent his artery and gun carriers to south steep of Nalapani hill. He sent the cavalry to Rajpur village (north of Nalapani or Khalanga Fort) that they can capture running Gurkha soldiers. In morning, the army reached at hill top of Tharapani. No Gurkha was seen on the way. British soldiers fired guns towards Nalapani (Khalanga) fort or Garhi. Guns canon did not reach to the fort.  After a hour or so 6 pond canon Gun reached to Tharapani top. Guns were fired but the canons did not reach to Nalapani fort and firing continued for many hours. It was not possible to takes guns crossing rivulet.  Colonel Maubi stopped the attack and his army came back to Khurbura Camp at Dehradun. Hastings suggested Maubi not to attack on Nalapani Fort till long range guns did not reach to Dehradun.
                      Major Gillespie reaching Dehradun

Major General Gillespie was pleased by knowing that the army captured all Yamuna ports and reached to Dehradun. Ochterloni required more soldiers for Himachal Campaign and Gillespie assured Ochterloni that he would send soldiers to Sirmaur by 1st November 1814.
On 25th October he came that first British attack was failure.
On 26th October, Gillespie reached to Khurbura Camp. On 27th October, Gillespie reached to Tharapani and inspected the whole situation.  He decided for camping at a place close to Nalapani Garhi. He was sure for capturing Nalapani fortes. He called more soldiers and long range guns from Saharanpur.
On 29th October a couple of guns and few soldiers reached to Dehradun. There were a couple of companies to reach Dehradun.
Gillespie decided for attacking Nalapani Garhi before 1st November.

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Gillespie planed a strategy for second attack on Khalanga/Nalapani Garhi. He was of an opinion that if Khalanga /Nalapani Garhi would be surrounded from four ways and then army would attack at the Garhi, there British would definitely would won the war.
Gillespie divided his army into five divisions and ordered his commanders to march in night towards Khalanga and attack from next morning. The order for each commander was as follows (Williams, Memoir of Dehradun)-
1-Captain John Fast was commanding 363 Indian soldiers and officers would attack from Lakhand village that was North West of Nalapani Hill.
2- Major Kelly was the in charge of 521 Indian soldiers and 20 Indian Pioneers. He was supposed to reach at Kharsali and from there to march towards Nalapani. Kharsali was two miles away in North of Khalanga/Nalapani hills.
3-Captain john Campbell was commander of 283 Indian soldiers and officers. Campbell was to reach in night at Ashthal village east of Saugangghere and would march from Ashthal village towards Nalapani.
4- Lieutenant Colonel carpenter was heading two companies of 53th British regiment having 588 soldiers. He was supposed to attack from Tharapani Tapda.
5- Major Ladle was in reserve for assisting Carpenter at Tharapani with    100 Irish Dragons and 991 Indian soldiers.
