John Premble (Invasion of Nepal) offered details of third attack on Khalanga/Nalapani Gadhi by British army.
For three weeks, Colonel Mawbey waited for bigger canons supply from Delhi. Bigger canons reached to Doon Camp on 24th November. Two light infantry companies, Carpenter battalion reached to camp with four canons of eighteen pounds, two mortars of eight inches too. Colonel Mawbey sent a couple of companies for surrounding Nalapani fort from all sides that Gurkha soldiers don’t run away from territory.  Mawbey sent Ludly to Tharapani hill with soldiers. Major Baldock reached from right side of Tharapani. Captain Buck was sent to Lakhend and Captain Caulmart was sent to Asthal.
That time, British army took another rout for surrounding Nalapani Fort. British army marched through south east of Saung valley (Gdhera). That rout was long and more difficult terrain. However, Gurkha could not watch on the new rout. Army reached slowly , slowly to a small hill (Tappad) one mile and south east of the Nalapani fort. By difficulty soldiers took the two twelve pound canons and four eighteen pound canons in night to the place 250 meter away from fort. By noon of 27th November, British soldiers fired canons on the fort wall and fort wall broke down.
Major Inglebai   reached near the damaged wall and was just to enter inside but got injured and came back. Captain Parker reached to the wall and found that the hole was at higher height. By peering from the hole it was found that below the hole there was ditch and Gurkha were ready with swords to cut the entrants. The soldiers who were on wall or wall of the hole were killed by Gurkha soldiers. Lieutenant Herington was killed by a gun fire on his back by Gurkha gun man. Gurkha were answering British attack by stones, arrows and gun fires,. British army started firing on Gurkha inside the hole.
Captain John Campbell was dead due to arrow attack from Gurkha. The third attack also was failure attack. Lieutenant Laxford was also injured.  Muslim soldiers got scared by failure.
The soldiers of 53 Battalion were not cowered but were inactive or sluggish before Gurkha.  Four European officers were killed and seven officers and 33 soldiers were killed and 636 injured (including 12 sergeants and three band masters). 184 Privates of 53th Battalions, either were injured or disappeared. Totally 864 soldiers were injured in third attack.
Only 250 Gurkha soldiers were alive in Gurkha camp inside Nalapani fort.
On 28th November, Balbhadra Kunwar ordered to take dead bodies of British army. Thirteen dead bodied were taken inside the fort. The body of dead Hairngton was beheaded.

Eden Vansittart in Notes on Nepal page 15, describes a story about a great Gurkha soldier of Khalanga/Nalapani battle. Nepali Lyricist Bal Krishna Sharma and music composer Shiv Shankar created a musical drama ‘Nalapanima’ (In Nalapani) on this story.
The British soldiers were firing guns and canons on the Nalapani fort. There was danger of Gurkhas being killed inside due to debris. A soldier Gurkha soldier came out of Fort with waving his empty hands. British stopped firing. The face of Gurkha soldier was severely injured. The wounded soldier wanted help from British soldiers. British soldiers did aid him first aid for his injury. Gurkha knew the importance of first aid in battle. After taking first aid the Gurkha soldier desired to go back into fort and fight with British army and refused to enter into British army. British soldiers appreciated the devotion of Gurkha for his country.

When that soldier returned back to Garhi, British army again started firing guns and canons on Garhi. By evening of 29th November, east wall of Garhi /Fort was completely damaged. Now, army stopped firing on east wall. It was decided that the canons would be used for damaging south wall of fort. There were gun and canon firing at 2 AM night. Captain Buck was stationed at water source. The inhabitants of fort used to come for taking water at that source. When Gurkha people came for fetching water or taking water British army fired on them and there was firing from both the end. Gurkha returned without taking water.
There was silent for one hour in night . At 3 Am, Gurkha army came out of Garhi and marched towards south. This time Gurkha soldiers were going towards rivulets by taking help of bushes. British army fired on them. Out of 300 soldiers, only 70 or 73 soldiers could flee from that area and others were killed.
Those seventy soldiers did not ask for asylum from British. Their leader Balbhadra was with them
As per folk stories , Balbhadra ( Levanidas) cried and told that it was not possible to be in Garhi and he was leaving Garhi by his own wish. Balbhadra and his soldiers were thirsty. They did not care and marched forward without caring firing from British army. Soldiers were having either naked swords or guns. Balbhadra was leading them from front. He disappeared in dark.

Major Kelley ordered the troop of Grandeur for entering into Fort. A musician from the Band entered into Fort. He saw that there was no single soldier in the Garhi/Fort. He cried “ it is empty, it is empty”.
Then Major Kelly and his troop entered into Fort and captured Nalapani Fort at four Am on 30th November 1814.  It was dark in the fort but human cries were disturbing the troop. Kelly called for lighting and he was shocked to see the pathetic scene. Injured soldiers were crying and there was bad smell everywhere by putrified dead bodies.
The dead body parts of Gurkha soldiers were scattered here and there. A canon was there and seven soldiers were dead nearby canon. The injured people were crying for water. There were 86 dead bodies.
The British armed forced offered them water. Many live injured human were under dead bodies and could not move. They were asking water. British army snet 90 injured Gurkha to hospital for first aid.  97 dead bodies were cremated (burnt). A few dead bodies were buried. Burial was not systematic as it was difficult to dig the pit due to stony base.. British army tried to clean the Fort.

Motilal Ghosh and other British writers praised the bravery of Gurkha commander Balbhadra. Balbhadra was great motivator and he motivated women of Nalapani Garhi too for fighting with British army. Inspired by Balbhadra women threw stones on the enemy army.
He did not insult enemy dead soldiers. Barring a couple instances he did not order to make naked the dead enemies.
British praised the bravery of Balbhadra. There is a monument of Colonel Gillespie and nearby there is monument of Balbhadra in Rispanna region. However, Dr. Shiv Prasad Dabral asks why there is no monument of Garhwal King Pradyuman Shah who fought and died for freedom of Garhwal.

Around 300 Gurkha soldiers were roaming on Hill of Song River before British captured Nalapani Fort. It was guessed that Gurkha commander Ranjor Singh from Nahan , Himachal deputed those soldiers for helping Balbhadra in Dehradun. Maubi decided that the Balbhadra company should not meet those soldiers around hill of Song River. Perhaps Randip Kaji was leading Gurkha soldiers around Hill of Song River.
Balbhadra reached Dobar from Nalapani. Perhaps the Ranjor Company also met Balbhadra troop here. On 1st December Guru Singh a spy of Ludli  informed that a Gurkha troop is staying on Hill of Baldigad Gadan. On the same day, Ludli reached there with 450 Indian soldiers. In night the British soldiers saw fire on Balgad Gadan Hill. 100  Indian soldiers of British army with three officers raided on Gurkha troop at Balgad Gadan Danda (Hill). Gurkha soldiers were scattered and 60 Gurkha soldiers were killed. 4 British soldiers were injured. British army snatched two rod of flags from Gurkha. Maubi was happy and Hastings sent a congratulating message to Maubi and asked to reward Guru Singh for Rs 100.

Balbhadra reached Saklana from Dobar running through out night. His army looted many villages on the way. Randip Kaji also camped in Saklana. There were around 400 people with Gurkha commander. Second day, Balbhadra reached to Chamuvakhal. Balvant Kaji also reached there with his troop. Balbhadra knew that Shivram and Kashiram were in Dehradun. Balbhadra punished the people of Saklana by accusing them as traitors of Gurkha rule. His soldiers’ e captured men and women of Saklana and took them to Chamuva. However, people ran away from captive. Balbhadra called the Grampradhan (Village council chief) to Chamuva.
British already had captured the Yamuna ports of Kalsi. It was possible that Garhwalis from Bhagirathi valley would come to Dehradun and would inform various types of information. Gurkha commanders ordered village council chiefs  for supply of grains and other materials.

Leaving Balvant Kaji in Camuva, Balbhadra preceded towards west (towards Himachal).Balbhadra stayed at Jotgarh Garhi with his soldiers. Jotgarh Fort was north east of Bairat of Jaunsar. As mentioned earlier that Carpenter captured Kalaseedhi and Yamuna port on 20th October 1814. Gorkha troop was at Bairat three miles away from Kalsi. Bairat Garhi was at 7000 feet high and was hard to reach. However, Jaunsar People declared the support to British army. Jaunsaris stooped food supply to Bairat Garhi. When Balbhadra fled from Khalanga /Nalapani, the Gurkha troop also fled from Bairat Fort. As the Gurkha fled from Bairat Garhi, Captain Frost captured Bairat Garhi on 14th December  1814. After capturing Bairat Garhi, British had rule over Dehradun and Jaunsar.
British commanders stopped communication line of Gurkha armies from Himachal to Garhwal, Kumaon and Nepal. British army got many letters of Gurkha that was witness that a troop was being sent from Shrinagar to Ranjit Singh Thapa at Nahan.

Initially, Hastings planned that after capturing Dehradun, Frazer would march for capturing Shrinagar. Garhwalis sent letters to Tularam too for British coming to Shrinagar. Frazer also insisted that British should provoke Garhwalis against Gurkha as Jaunsari revolted against Gurkha. Frazer requested that let him be permitted to attack on Gurkha staying on upper Garhwal (north of Jaunsar). However, by experience of Khalanga resistance from Gurkha Hastings concluded that Gurkha had powerful defensive mechanism in mountain forts (garhi). Therefore, Hastings ordered that Carpenter and army should be in Dehradun and Jaunsar. He asked Maubi to attack on Gurkha at  Nahan (Himachal). Hastings asked Maubi to destroy Khalanga fort completely before leaving Dehradun.  Maubi destroyed Khalanga Garhi completely.

Incompetency of Sudarshan Shah in Inspiring Garhwalis against Gurkha

              British Capturing Chumvagarhi
On December 1814, Captain Carpenter got order for capturing Chamuva Gadhi where Balbhadra Kunwar was staying . Carpenter was asked by all means to stop Blabhadra Kunwar for meeting Ranjor  Singh Thapa in Nahan.  Carpenter had only 200  soldiers and he waited for more soldiers to come. The soldiers with Balbhadra Kunwar were around 300. Balbhadra Kunwar fled from Chamuva Garhi to Jauntgarh before British could capture Chamuva Garhi. Randeep Kaji was in Chamuva Garhi. On 20th March 1815, British army attacked on  Chamuva Garhi on 20th March 1815 and captured the fort. Randeep Kaji fled with 300 soldiers crossing Bhagirathi River.

                  British Capturing Jaunt Garh
In January 1815, with 400 permanent soldiers and 600 newly recruited soldiers Major Bulldock  attacked Jaunt Garh fort. However, Baldock failed in capturing Jaunt Garh. Taking benefits, Balbhadra Kunwar fled from Jaunt Garh fort towards Jaithok by crossing Tons River. When Blabhadra Kunwar crossed Tons River,  Jaunsaris tried to stop Balbhadra with wood staff. Balbhadra could easily flee before Jaunsaris as they were not trained for such war. Without any difficulty Balbhadra fled away. In March 1815, British army attacked with full force on Jaunt Garhi. Gurkha soldiers fled away towards east by crossingBhagirathi River.
                No help from Sudarshan Shah
Sudarshan Shah, Shivram, Kashiram , Ashadhu Gusain and others were with Lieutenant  Menrath , Baldock. However, Sudarshan Shah could not inspire Garhwalis for helping British as British had hopes. Himachal Kings could inspire their subjects for helping British army against Gurkha.
By capturing Chamuva Garh and Jaunt Garh, British had possession over Yamuna and Bhagirathi valleys and Gurkha fled towards east (Shrinagar).
