                              British Capturing Gurkha Spies

History British Campaign for Capturing Kumaon -13

Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -226

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

At the same period , Gurkha/Nepal officers in Kumaon also started their spies in Kashipur and other plains areas for getting information about British army. Most probably, the spies were Kumaunis, Garhwalis and a few people from plains. Gurkha/Nepalese officers used pay to spies. On 24th January 1815, John Adam sent a letter to Edward Gardner wherein he detailed the identities such as dressing etc of Gurkha spies working in plains. There was an poster /advertising poster wherein there was instruction for capturing Gurkha spies and their papers. Gardner copied that advertising poster and distributed in Police Camps of Kashipur. By that act, British army captured many Gurkha spies and papers with them.

The East India Company High Command instructed L. Colonel Gardner and Edward Gardner in details for Kumaon Campaign. L. Colonel Gardner had to follow the instruction of Edward Gardner. Governor General had full confidence that both the officers would act smoothly for Kumaon Campaign.

On 21st December 1814, from Nazibabad Camp, adjutant General G.H. Fagan wrote letter for L. Colonel Gardner,” High command decided that there would be attack on Kumaon from two sides.  The suggestion is that light attack would be campaigned  through Chilkiyaghat and heavy attack to be campaigned through Timlaghate –Pilibhit-Bareli region. However, you both should decide where to act attack effectively. After capturing the Ghat you should establish temporary camp at nearby Hill top. By establishing temporary camp for Guns you would campaign further easily
You should establish a depot near Almora that you easily capture Almora city.

                             British Gaining Sympathy from Kumaunis

Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -228

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Governor General was taking action with care after Khalanga defeat. He was cautious about hills of Uttarakhand and Himachal. The temporary Rohila soldiers were not devotee as Hindu soldiers. British army could not offer suitable training to temporary Rohila soldiers too. Rohila cavalry was expert in battles in plains but was not suitable in fighting Gurkha in Hills of Kumaon and Garhwal. Therefore, for capturing Kumaon, it was essential that British gain sympathy of Kumaunis of hills.
High command instructed Gardner brothers that at every stage they have to gain the sympathy of local Kumaunis. Fagan instructed L. Colonel Gardner that the British army should gain sympathy of Kamin, Sayanas and other influential people of Kumaon villages coming in Campaign Path. By getting sympathy from local Kumaunis British army could hand over the camp to Kumaunis.

Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -230

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -758

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Lal Singh was brother of Ex Kumaon King Mohan Chand.  Governor General declared capturing Kumaon under British rule. However, Governor General and his team was not ready for offering Jagir to any hiers of Chand family. Governor General instructed Edward Gardner nt to take any action that nay family members of Chand dynasty started working for claiming their rights on Kumaon territory. Governor General instructed that Edward and team should not take any help from Chand family or those are aspirants for Kumaon territory. It was thought that Kumaon subject would not like Chand kings.
There were other aspirants for Kumaon Kingdom-
1-The heirs of King Lakshmi Chand living in Pareva village of Kota pargana
2-Heirs of King Kalyan Chand living in Joba village of Sor Pargana
3-Many heirs of King Rudra Chand
4- Hiers of Jodhsingh Katehariya whose son was married to daughter of King Deep Chand.
British administrators preferred Bamshah than Lal Singh for future ruler of Kumaon territory. Edward Gardner was asked for finding more details about Lal Singh. Edward informed that “It was found that Mohan Chand ruled for a span of time by getting help of Rohila solders who terrorized the Kumaon territory. There was Gurkah rule in Kumaon for 25 years.
Therefore, it is not advisable to make Lal Singh as ruler of Kumaon. “ Governor General was pleased to know those facts.

Nepalese Resident Bamshah endeavoring for Compromise with British

History British Campaign for Capturing Kumaon -20

Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -233

History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -761

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Kumaon Resident of Nepal Bamshah was aware of British preparation for conflict with Nepal. Edward Gardner sent Bamshah letters for guessing his intentions but Bamshah did not show the reality through his communications. Edward Gardner, lieutenant Colonel Gardner, Hearsay were busy in preparation for Kumaon attack from January 1815. Edward Gardner sent letter to Bamshah from Kashipur. However, the letters from Bamshah were not offering any intention of Bamshah.
Bamshah was also busy in preparation for future war with British. On 16th January 1815, Bamshah sent a letter to Governor General’s Agent Colebrook with his two emissaries (Vakil)- Hari Krishna Tiwari and Babu Neelnarayan.  Letter was as –
“  I sent a letter in response your letter about Jagir for Lal Singh Chaudhari Mahtab of Tahsildar of Kashipur and Tahsildar of Mirja Muhammad Bullekhan, I requested you for peaceful compromise on disputed matters.  I requested your representatives for discussion but they did not respond .When Governor General was supposed to visit Kashipur via Moradabad I decided for sending my representative with a letter and Gifts of Hill produces. However, when I came to know that you went to Farukhabad from Moradabad and Governor Genral went to Haridwar from Kashipur and I had to cancel the program.
Initially, there was peaceful relation between Nepal and British. However, these days, we dispute for petty matters. Please inform how there should be friendly relation between Nepal and British. I shall cooperate with you for creating friendly relation between Nepal and British”
The above letter was clear that Bamshah was devoted to his Kingdom and Nepal was not ready for real friendship. Now, British officers were clear that Bamshah would not breach his Kingdom.
The representatives of Bamshah were till March in Fatehgarh.  They were now in debt due to long stay in Fatehgarh. As per advice of John Adam, Colebrook paid them money and sent them to L Colonel Gardner with his peons.
At the same time , Bamshah also sent letter to Harshdev Joshi with his trusted man. Harshdev Joshi sent that letter to Edward Gardner.  Edward Gardner was now clear that Bamshah was taking time for new army coming to Kumaon from Nepal or Garhwal.
Colebrook repalied letter to Bamshah that British officials were satisfied with Bamshah. Bamshah was adviced to sent future communication to Edward Gardner who was in charge of Political Policies for Kumaun.

In East (Gorakhpur and Deenapur), British High Command  sent Major General S Wood and M.G Marley for attacking on Nepalese territories. High Command instructed Wood for attacking and destroying Nepalese army in Tarai that he could capture Palpa. Wood was also instructed for disconnecting communication line of Nepalese connecting East to west. The strategy was to divide Nepalese force as Marley was to attack on Kathmandu.
However, due to wrong analysis or wrong path finders , Wood could only act defending Tarai territories. His hundreds of soldiers died due to disease.
The army of Major General Marley was best equipped and trained army. The British army nder Marley destroyed Nepalese army in Burhava in last week of November 1814. British army also killed Nepalese Commander Parushram Thapa there. British army under Marley captured Saran and Tarai belt of Tiruhut.
Hoever, now Marley was afraid of attacking Hill region. Marley was not in perfect metal condition for two months. Marley escaped from camp leaving his army without leader on 10th February 1815 night.
Due to failure of those two campaigns, the Nepalse army in Kathmando were fearless from British army  and Nepal was ready for sending the army to protect Kumaon and other territories.
Due to campaign failures in Tarai of Gorkahpur and Deenapur, Governor General was aware of importance of Kumaon Campaign.
