Now season was conducive season and loaders reached to Kashipur. Lieutenant Colonel Gardner Army initiated his march from Kashipur towards Hills on 11th February. Most probably, Harshdev Joshi also accompanied Gardner. There were huge numbers of loaders for taking loads of soldiers. Elephants were also taking load though the road was having ups and downs.
On 12th February 1815, British army reached to Kanyasi (Kumaon), on 13th to Chilkiya (Kumaon), and on 14h February reached at Amsout. There was fence (Bara) around Garhi where a few Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers were staying. As soon they knew British reaching to the area, Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers ran left Garhi without resisting. Now, British captured Amsout (Kumaon) Garhi and camped there.
On 15th February 1815, British army reached to Dhikuli. Nepalese soldiers erected Bara (fence) around Garhi. There in Dhikuli Garhi, there a few Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers and they too ran away from Garhi.  There were a few local Manihar (labor or workers in Garhi. Those Manihar accepted working for British. Gardner put a army company in Dhikuli Garhi for protecting link line of plains to Chilkiya.

British Army in Kosi River Valley

History British Campaign for Capturing Kumaon -24

Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -237
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -765

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

On 16th February 1815, British army went ahead in Kosi River valley and camped at Chukam. Till that time, due to unavailability of loaders, Guns and other weapons could not br brought there. British army stayed in Chukam  for two days. Then, British army reached far ahead in Kumaon Hills. It was necessary for British commanders for protecting link line from plains to Kosi Valley.
There was an army camp of Gurkha/Nepalese at Kotagarhi at right side of Dabkan Rivulet that was east south of Chukam. On 18th February 1815, L.C Gardner sent 300 soldiers for getting rid  of Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers from Kotagarhi. Before, British army reached at Kotagarhi, Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers fled from Kotagarhi towards hills. L.C Gardner put a an army company there in Kotagarhi. On the same day Lieutenant Colonel Gardner sent 300 soldiers for capturing Tungadakhal  Garhi. The army could reach Kosi valley from Tungrakhal.
In between Ramganga and Kosi River there was a hill top –‘Kath ki Nav’ and there was Gurkha soldier camp. Pande mentioned that there was wooden fortress. That camp was very important for defending Link Line. On 19th February 1815, Gardner sent 500 soldiers for capturing ‘Kath ki Nav’ hill top.  Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers left the camp without any fight and reached to Gagar Garhi. On the same day, British army captured Ukhaldhunga (7 miles away from Kosi river). In evening Gardner sent a column to a hill top (right of Ukhaldhunga).  From that Hill Top, there were two roads one for Tangurakhal and other to Lohgaliyakhal.  Gurkha commander sent his soldiers on a hill top just parralle but part of that Hill top too. There was gun firing between two armies. There was gun firing till late night. British army reached to another hill top and pushed away Gurkha soldiers. Then, British army had safe link line between Tungrakhal and Lohgaliyaghat.  At the same time there was information that Gurkha/Nepalese army vacated from two Garhis of Kota.
On 21st February 1815, British 700 soldier’s army camped in Sethi hill top in Kosi Valley. L.C Colonel took necessary cautions for defense.

Gurkha/Nepalese army did not resist against attack on Doon and Nahan by British army. Same way, Gurkha/Nepalese army did not put any resistance against British attack in Kumaon too. British Army was on marching in Kumaon from 9th February to 21st February 1815. There was no resistance from Gurkha soldiers.
On 21st February, there was news that Gurkha /Nepalese Commander Angad Sardar reached at ‘Bhujan’ with 800 Nepalese soldiers.  Bhujan was situated in Kosi valley 15 miles away from Sethi towards Almora.  Those Nepalese soldiers ran away from Kota and Kath ki Nav also reached to Bhujan. Lieutenant Colonel Gardner was aware that in hill terrain, Gurkha soldiers were superior to Rohila soldiers. Gardner was aware that one loss would be harmful for British army and High Command morale. Gardner was not ready for direct head on. He ordered his army for marching another way and not through Bhujan-Almora road but through Ranikhet and Riuni –Almora road.

Gardner taking Alternate Path for Army March

History British Campaign for Capturing Kumaon -26

Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -239
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -767

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Lieutenant Colonel Gardner was aware of Alternate Path for reaching Almora and avoiding Bhujan Path where Gurkha Commander Angad Sardar was camping with army. Most probably, Gardner was having arough map of Kumaon too. Almora is situated at the bank of Kosi River that flows from its birth place directly from North to South for 15 miles. Approximately 10 miles South of Almora, Kosi turns west from Sual River meeting place. Kosi river turns south from Chukam and flows likewise till Kashipur crossing Dhikuli, Chilkiya. Kankadighat and Khairna are at same distances from Bhujan where Angad Sardar was camping. There is a bend at Kosi river at Bhujan. A narrow path goes from that bend to Pantpipal and Amela of Kosi valley. Amela is situated 15 miles west of Bhujan and reaces to Almora. Lieutenant Colonel too a narrow path near to Pantpipal and Amela that is west of Kosi.
There were a couple benefits for marching through alternate path for British troop. Gardner could easily contact with people of west of Kumaon and east of Garhwal.  That region was the fertile most region in Kumaon and British army could get food easily from the region. Even, British army could cut food supply from the region to Gurkha/Nepalese army staying at Almora. That path was also to cut communication line of Gurkha/Nepalese administrators from Kumaon to Garhwal. It was easy to capture Almora from that path as Gurkha cammanders did not pay attention on defending that path. While there were Gurkha army posts  on the main road of south west of Almora.

                     British Occupying Chamua (Chaumukhiya) Kumaon

Nepal Rule over Kumaun, Garhwal and Himachal (1790-1815) -240
History of Uttarakhand (Garhwal, Kumaon and Haridwar) -768

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)
On 22nd February, irregular British Army reached to Amela via Kosi valley, Kumaon. On the same day, Gardner reached to Binkot, Kumaon through left narrow road of Amela. Chaumukhiya/Chamua was on a 6354 feet height hill top between Kosi and Ramganga Rivers. From war point of view , it was necessary for occupying Chamua hill top.  Gardner decided for occupying Chamua on the same day. Due to straight steep and walk for  the day , only 40 soldiers could reach to Chamua hill top. A few army personnel reached by night too. Balance army reached Chamua by morning. There was snow on the top and soldiers did not face water problem.
By the march of British army, Gurkha/Nepalese commander Angad Sardar understood that British wanted occupying Chamua hill top. Angad Sardar also decided to occupy strategic hill top Chamua. However, when Angad Sradar reached four miles away from Chamua he came to know that British already occupied Chamua hill top. Angad Sardar had to return back from the way. Balance British army personnel reached to Chamua hill top by 25th February. With hard work, guns and elephants also reached to Chamua by next day.
After occupying Chamua, British soldiers snatched letters from Gurkha soldiers. By those letters, British commanders came to know that Gurkha/Nepalese made strategies for occupying Chamua and Bhujan (Bujan). Gurkha/Nepalese never guessed that British army would take difficult terrain Binkot for reaching  Chamua. Gurkha/Nepalese army had to return from Chamua region.

As British army enters into Kumaon region, Kumaonis were pleased by the news. Dr Dabral wrote that Maularam did not mention about the pleasure of Kumaonis by entry of British army. Maulram was a court poet who praised only his masters. At that time he was serving Nepal government and might be later on under British rule he had hope for going Nepal and would get gifts from Nepal government. That might be the reason Maulram was neutral in his writing about emotions of Kumaonis.
The British source (Atkinson) reveals that Kumaonis welcomed British army. In any case, Kumaonis did not resist for Nepal attack too and just accepted Nepalese as ruler. Atkinson wrote that Kumaonis brought food articles for British Army personnel and Grass for army horses. Kumaonis cooperated with British.

Gurkha/Nepalese army failed in stopping British army entering in Bhujan/Bujan and Chaumukhia /Chamua).  Gurkha/Nepalese army made strategy for stopping British Army march at Kumpur/Ranikhet. British army had to go ahead of the hill Chamua/Chaumukhiya to the  Katallekh Hill. The Katallekh Hill reached to near Almora east. The narrow lane on the Katallekh shrine was safe for British army.
As per strategy, Gurkha/Nepalese army reached to Kumpur (Ranikhet region) Hill at height of 5983 Feet. Gurkha army erected Fence there that was opposite of Chaumukhia /Chamua Hill.  Kumpur camp was important from battle point of view as British army had to cross Kumpur ( in Ranikhet) hill for reaching Almora city.
The Gurkha/Nepalese Army camp was in such a place that Lieutenant Colonel Gardner Army had to head on with Nepalese Army for reaching Almora. Gardner asked maximum numbers of soldiers for reaching at his Camp. Gardner asked soldiers of Kota and Kath ki Nav camps to reach his camp at Chamua /Chaumukhia. Only fifty soldiers and one police inspector was kept each in both the camps. Tiil that time, food supply also did not reach to Chamua/Chaumukhiya Camp .
On 18th February, British army camped at Kapina Hill that was nearer to Kampur Hill. The British Camp was just opposite of fenece of Nepalese Army Camp.  There were 1500 Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers in the camp. It was difficult to win over Gurkha army at that place. British army was also not having appliances for  breaking the fence of camp.
From 28th February to 22nd March 1815, British Army had to stay in that Camp at Kapina Hill. One day, a few Nepalese soldiers attacked on British camp with Khukari (Swords). Rohilla soldiers defeated Nepalese soldiers. Second day, 600 Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers attacked on British camp. Same numbers of Rohilla soldiers defeated Nepalese soldiers. By 8th March , more 850 Rohila soldiers reached to British Army camp. Now, L. Colonel Gardner decided to attack on Gurkha/Nepalese Camp.

Between Kumpur and Almora there is Syahi/Siyahi Devi temple hill that’s height would be 7186 Feet. Kosi River flows between Syahi/Siyahi Devi Hill and Almora city. It was supposed that Nepalese would kept army on Syahi/Siyahi Devi temple hill.  However, due to unknown reasons, Gurkha/Nepalese commanders did not keep army at Syahi Devi Hill. Lieutenant Colonel Gardner decided for occupying Syahi/Siyahi Hill for strategic purpose. By occupying Syahi /Siyahi hill , it was necessary that Gurkha/Nepalese army would vacate Kumpur Camp. Or there would abe situation for capturing Almora city.
Bumshah sent his whole army to Kumpur and the soldiers in Almora city were in few numbers. On 22nd March night, Gardner sent 1200 soldiers towards Syahi /Siyahi Devi temple hill. Those soldiers came to Panor Gadan (rivulet). That Rivulet Gadan meet to Ulavgad Gadan which meets to Kosi then.  In morning for destracting Gurkha soldiers, British army did drama for attacking on Kumpur Camp. It was done that Gurkha/Nepalese could not be attracted to activities being done on Syahi Devi Hill region.  On 23rd noon, the information reached to Gardner that 400 soldiers reached to Baol and they established a Camp there. Baol was 10 miles away from British camp and 4 miles left from Kumpur.  The soldiers those reached to Ulavgad valley they started to walk over on Syahi/Siyahi Devi hill. After crossing Suri village British soldiers reached a temple and camped there on Syahi Devi Hill top . Late noon Gurkha /Nepalese army came to know that British occupied Syahi /Siyahi Devi Hill top.
On 24th March Gurkha/Nepalese army ran away from Kumpur camp through Riuni and Katarmal hills for protecting Almora city. Before vacating Kumpur Gurkha /Nepalese soldiers burnt Wood fences of Kumpur camp. The Syahi Devi Hill occupying campaign by British was successful .

However, it was not possible to go back from that place for capturing Almora. The road towards Almora from Syahidevi/Siyahi Devi hill was very obstructive. Therefore, W.L Gardner decided to follow same road through that Gurkha/Nepalese went from Kumpur towards Almora. There was no resistance on that road –Kumpur towards Almora. The road guides informed that road was simple from Riuni to Katarmal. However, in practice the road was obstructive. Elephants carrying guns could not walk on that difficult road. Gardner selected Hill people for pulling guns. Gardner started his march on 22nd March from Kumpur for Riuni. Gardner army reached on 26th March to Riuni Gardner order for 800 soldiers for staying in Siyahi Devi camp and ordered for others to march for Katarmal. The front army company reached Katarmal by walking 16 miles. However, main army reached to Katarmal on 29th March 1815. Katarmal is 7 miles away from Almora on hill steep of Havalbaugh hill. There is Sun Temple in Katarmal. Gurkha soldiers ran away from Katarmal without resisting British army arrival. Gurkha/Nepalese soldiers reached at Sitoli Hill top two miles away from Almora.

                                 Cooperation from Kumaonis
Kumaonis started cooperating with British before the war began. Kumaon people were ready to help British by all means for freeing them from Gurkha/Nepalese rule. Harsh Dev Joshi helped British in getting Kumaonis cooperation. Kumaonis became road guides for British army. British army paid attention in luring Kumaoni Brahmins as they were influential in getting support from the people.
When British army reached to Katarmal and Nepalese soldiers ran away from Kumpur, By March 1815, 300  Kumaoni soldiers left from Nepalese army and returned to their respective villages.
Bamshah had around 1000 Nepalese soldiers for defending Almora city
