Reaching to Katarmal, Nicholas took charge of British army. He took administration in his hand.  Nicholas always took attention that by his act Lieutenant Colonel Gardner was not disturbed. Nicholas used to behave with Gardner in respectful manners. Nicholas too c Army administration in his hand but kept local administration and political administration with Gardner who was looking after Kumaon campaign from the beginning. Governor General was hopeful that both the Lieutenant Colonels would cooperate with each other.   Both were instructed for appointing soldiers leaving Gurkha regiments in irregular British Army

On 12nd April 1815, there was welcome for Hastidal in Lalmandi Fort three days after Nicholas reaching at Katarmal.
Hastidal the brother of  Bamshah entered into Fort with 300-400 soldiers.  Hearsay was also with the Hastidal party.  Gurkha could not take benefits of arresting Hearsay. The numbers of regular British army soldiers were more than Gurkha soldiers. There was acute shortage of food in Almora and other camps of Gurkha army. Gurkha soldiers used to go for looting food from nearby villages. The civilians already escaped from Almora.  The Gurkha army in Almora was in very bad shape. However, Gurkha soldiers were patriotic and were ready for sacrificing for adversity and their lives for the Nepal King.  Hastings also praised the patriotism of Gurkha soldiers.

The situation of Gurkha/Nepalese army was very weak in West of Kali River. Therefore, Bamshah tried for friendly treaty with British a few times. British were sure that Bamshah was waiting for suitable opportunity to come that Nepalese army reached to Kumaon from Nepal. On 14th May, Nepal government sent an army of 633 soldiers for Kumaon from Kathmandu. Nepalese government assured that more soldiers would be sent to Kumaon. However, before Nepalese army would reach to Kumaon, British had already captured Almora.

After British reaching and capturing Dehradun, the Kamin, Sayana and villagers of Salan (South Garhwal) were ready for rebelling against Gurkha. Bagha Raut of Salan sent altter to Tularam about villagers being ready against Gurkha. TDue to circumstances, British did not send the army either in Alaknand valley or Chilkha-Kotdwara belt. Adjutant General Fagan visited Moradabad and Governor General visited Haridwar but they did not send the army to South Garhwal.  When British army captured Chamuakhal region of Bhagirathy valley Gurkha army made Shrinagar as their centre for army. Lieutenant Colonel Gardner established Army camps in various places of Kumaon. Estblishing army camps in Kumaon, British cut the communication line for Gurkha between Shrinagar Garhwal and Kumaon.
Enthusiastically, Garhwalis of east Garhwal and Kumaonis of west Kumaon started resisting Gurkha administration.  There were 150 Gurkha soldiers in Lobhagarh, The Garhwali soldiers from Lobhagarh region stopped water supply for Gurkha soldiers in Lobhagarh Fort. By getting weapons from Gardner, Garhwalis attacked on Gurkha too. On 22nd April 1815, Gurkha soldiers ran away from Lobhagarh for Shrinagar. This was a type of revolution against Gurkha from civilians in Garhwal.

By: Bhishma Kukreti (A History Student)

Lieutenant Colonel Nicholas reached at Katarmal on 9th April1815, However, Nicholas was busy in collecting supply , gun collection and loaders for two weeks. The British army was camping in Katarmal, Syahidevi, and Dhamas. There were 2500 soldiers. Gurkhas were sure that British army would capture Bageshwar road. Therefore, on 22nd April morning, Nepalese Resident Bamshah sent  around 250- 300 soldiers towards Gannath with Hastidal.  Gannath hill was situated 15 miles away in north of Almora. Gannath hill was in between Kali and Koshila (Kaushiki) Rivers. When that information reached to British camp, Nicholas guessed that Hastidal party wanted for weapon supply and money from west of Kali River. However, later on the reality opened that Gurkha wanted to protect Upper Kumaon region that Gurkha would have communication with Kathmando through Bhotiya region –Johar and Daram.
Since, Gurkha Communication line with Tarai and Bhabhar was broken, it was essential for them that they protect upper Kumaon region. From Upper Kumaon region, Gurkha could communicate with West Kumaon, Garhwal and Himachal. It was not wise decision to keep army in Almora.
Hastidal marched for Gannath hill through Kalamtiya Hill road. Hastidal wanted establishing camp at Gannath that left wing of Gurkha battalion would be safe from British army at Havalbaugh. The Gurkha tried for keeping Hastidal March secret. However, citizens spread news immediately to British camps.
Nicholas sent a company under  Captain Butterfield to west of Kumaon for winning citizens faith and buying food from Kumaonis.
On 22nd April, Nicholas sent 5 companies under seventh battalion under Major Paton and 5 flank companies under Captain Laze for attacking on Hastidal Company.  There were total 900 soldiers, 6 ponds Gun and a mortar.  Gurkha army led by Hastidal reached at Gannath. Before Gurkha could  establish camps, British army attacked on Gurkha army.

The steep of Gannath hill is very difficult. On the hill the place is plan. There was a Shiv Temple on the hill. Hastidal offered 3 Gold coins on Shiv Linga but Coins slipped down and Hastidal thought of inauspicious time for him. He said, Kya Jane Devta Naraj Bhayyo, Bhet Manne na”
On 23rd Evening, tired and Hungary British army reached Gannath and the war began at Hill immediately. A gun bullet got on the temple of Hastidal. Hastidal fell down on the ground. Gurkha commander took the charge. Gurkha soldiers ran away after Hastidal falling on the ground. Gurkha could kill two British soldiers and injured 25 soldiers. According to Bamshah, Gurkha killed a captain too and only 9 Gurkha soldiers were killed by British army. According to John Premble, British soldiers killed 80 Nepalese soldiers. As per Atkinson, only 32 Gurkha soldiers were killed. The injured Gurkha soldiers were running towards Almora. Many Gurkha soldiers died on the way to Almora. Hastidal died on Gannath –Almora road. Nepalese commanders were scattered and none reached to Almora. British army captured Gannath Hill. A few soldiers remained at Gannath and balance returned to Almora.
Hastidal was reputable army man . Frazer praised bravery of Hastidal.   Nicholas also praised the bravery of Hastidal and paid tribute in a letter. Maularam described with high praise that the dead body was taken on Horse cart to Ganga bank and was cremated there. The British soldiers were watching cremation of Hastidal. Mostly, the body of Hastidal was cremated at Kaushikganga River bank.
There was hopelessness in Gurkha camp after defeat and death of Hastidal, Jairakha and soldiers. Nepalese lost Lobhagarhi too. Now, Nicholas decided for attacking on Almora.

From European standard, Almora was small city but from Himalayan point of view, Almora had important city. Old name of Almora was Khamgara. Almora was situated from North –West to South east for 6 Farlang. There was only one main road for entering Almora. The main road was surrounded by stones and houses were built on both sides of road. The ground floor of hoses was built by plain stones and upper floor was built by wood.
There were two forts in Almora. A Fort was in the middle of Almora city. Another Fort Dalmandi Fort of Almora was at south corner of the city. The mud-stone walls of those forts were not more than 8 feet height. However, both the forts were situated on hillocks and therefore, perceived as very high forts.
There was another hill range parallel to Khmagara hill east and was connected by narrow rivulet. That hill range was enough to defend some part of Almora. Gurkha soldiers built fences and ditches there. The biggest fence was in Sitauli hillock where Gurkha soldiers were there. Sitauli camp was as good as main Gurkha army camp. There was steep valley around Situali hill.  On north of Sitauli, Katarmal Hill was there.
On 25th April 1815, Angad Sardar was standing in Pandkhola villages situated in  Sitauli hill with soldiers. Chamu Bhandar and his soldiers were in between Kosi River and Katarmal Hill 2 miles away in west of city. Other soldiers were under Bamshah.
British informers offered following information about Gurkha army-
Out of Almora city – 900 Gurkha soldiers and other 600 soldiers
In Almora city- 150 soldiers under Bamshah
       --------------- 60 under Ranshoor karki
Chhakhata Garhi – 200 soldiers
Pali Pachhaun – 200 (out of those 150 were in Naithanagarh)
Katolgarh- 200 soldiers
As per Premble, there were not more than 2000 soldiers under Bamshah.

At Nine Am, on 25th April 1815, Captain Laze returned to Katarmal with his army from Gannath. After four hours, Nicholas marched towards Sitolidhar (Almora) for attacking on Gurkha Camps. Nicholas advanced with first flank battalion of fourth Indian Regiment to North Sitolidhar.  He wanted fire Mortars for vacating Gurkha from their camps. On his right, parallel, L.C Gardner marched with irregular army.  The idea was vacating Gurkha from South Sitolidhar.
The path from Katarmal to Sitolidhar hillock was narrow and full of pebbles. After crossing Kosi River, Nicholas disciplined his army in line. Nicholas was having canons, mortars, and howitzer   on elephants. After two hours, by walking on steep territory, Nicholas reached at Sitolidhar. European officers were in front. As soon as Angad Sardar saw British army descending from Katarmal  for moving to  Sitolidhar hill, he informed to Bamshah. Bamshah kept only one ‘Patti’ army with him and he  sent balance soldiers with Sardar Bhavani Baksh for helping Angad Sardar. Bmashah could not sent more soldiers. Rangelu Sardar was to defend Lalmandi fort and soldiers were necessary at Chandalekh too.
First, Nicholas ordered for firing Howitzer on Gurkha. However, analyzing self confidence of his army, Nicholas decided direct humanly attack on Gurkha soldiers. The soldiers of Feipul captured tow three small camps (Bada) . Gurkha soldiers ran away from Bada. Gurkha soldiers left Janjal canon in their Bada (camp with wood or stone fence). According to letter of Bamshah for Amar Singh Thapa, Gurkha soldiers could not resist gun /canon fires of British army.

At the same time, British army captured two more trenches of Gurkha. A British army soldier Dhaukal Singh showed special bravery. The army led by L.C Gardner captured three Gurkha trenches of Sitolidhar. Fifty British irregular army soldiers of fourth regiment remained in Sitolidhar and balance followed running Gurkha soldiers. There were five roads joining at Kalamtiya . British captured fenced Gurkha camp at Kalamtia. Therefore, the communication line between Almora and Sitolidhar was cut. Perhaps, Narshah Chauntara was commander of Kalamtia Camp. According to Bamshah Gurkha soldiers tried their best for defending Kalamtia camp. Nicholas praised the bravery of Indian soldiers of British army.
On that night, Nicholas established his camp at Pokharkhal fort. The length and width of that fort was 60 yard. Gurkha soldiers vacated that fort.  Defeated Gurkha soldiers ran away towards Almora. British army soldiers reached near Almora following running Gurkha soldiers. British army soldiers camped at Haridungari hillock above Pokharkhal.
Then 250 fourth regiment soldiers were sent with flank companies to south of Almora city.
Bamshah tried his best for defending Almora and Lalmandi forts. At the same time Angad Sardar and a few commanders reached to Almora. Bamshah instructed 30 soldiers to fight by Khukari. However, Gurkha soldiers could not defend. British army took shelter at Deepchand temple yard. From there, British army started firing by two Howitzers. By six PM, British army started firing below Almora fort.
Bamshah sent message to Kaji Bhandari that he should attack on British army at Haridungari in midnight.  Bamshah sent message that as soon you attack Gurkha would attack on British army at Deepchand temple.

Fierce Battle in Sitolidhar at Night
There was peace for long time. At night, at 11 P.M., Gurkha soldiers attacked and struggled for gaining lost Sitolidhar.
The Gurkha soldiers led by Chamu Bhandari those were at Kalamtiya came down from Kalmatiya and attacked on British army camp in north side.  There was Lieutenant Costley at Sitoldhar with 80 soldiers. As per folk tale, Chamu Bhandari tied Flambeaus/ Mashal on horns of Caw and bulls and followed by those lights towards British camp. Nicholas sent 150 soldiers under Lieutenant Brauni and Lieutenant Hwinfield for assisting Costley. L.C gardner also marched with his brave assistant Mohan Singh for help. On the way, they met a few soldiers those were running towards British camp and soldiers of Chamu Bhandari were following them with speed. . The soldiers under Brauni, Hwinfield and Gardner attacked on those soldiers with Gun bayonets and forced them to flee.  British recaptured Sitolidhar within ten minutes.
