                          Garhwali Plays Staged in Mumbai

Hindi article by late Dinesh Bhardwaj

                             Translated by Bhishm Kukreti

Parsi theatre has been dominating Mumbai theatre world. Parsi theatre style influenced modern popular Marathi drama too.
It is difficult to find the birth of Garhwali play staged first time in Mumbai. ‘Bhari bhul’ is remembered by most of the people that Bhari  Bhul by Jeet Singh Negi is first drama staged in Mumbai (around 1952)
From Mumbai’s playwright’s concerned, the first Garhwali play staged in 1962-1963 by Garhwal Bhratri Mandal. Late Deen Bandhu Dwivedi wrote this drama.
Garhwal Bhratri Mandal staged another Garhwali play ‘ Guldasta’ writtern by playwright late Jagdish Prasad Balodi. National integrity is the theme of ‘Guldasta’ and is purely morality based play.
As far as Garhwali plays are concerned in Mumbai, the period 1960-1 970 is ‘Lalit Mohan Thapliyal Era’.  Social organizations staged ‘ Khadu lapata’ for more than eight times. Bhratri Mandal staged ‘ Ekikaran’ and ‘Ghar jvanin’  Garhwali plays written by Lalit Mohan Thapliyal .
Alaknanda Delhi drama group headed by Swarup Dhoundiyal staged ‘Ardhgrameshwar a famous Garhwali play by Rajendra Dhashmana in Mumbai in 1973-1974.
Alaknanda Delhi drama group headed by Swarup Dhoundiyal staged ‘Adalat’ and ‘ Mangtu Baulya’ plays written by Swarup Dhoundiyal in Mumbai in 1975-1976.
The ‘kala Shakha’ of Garhwal Bhartri Mandal staged ‘ Ghar Javain’ of Lalit Mohan  Thapliyal in 1975-1976.
Uttarakhand Jan Kalyan Samiti , Mumbai staged ‘ Maletha ki Kool’a Garhwali play written by Jeet Singh Negi in 1975-1976
Garhwal Bharatri Mandal staged a lyrical play ‘Tilu Rautela’ in 1989. Dinesh Bhardwaj wrote song, dialogues of the said stage play. Dinesh Bhardwaj and Ummed Singh Bisht (father of famous singer Kalpana Chauhan)   produced and directed ‘Tilu Rautela’ with a troop of forty artists.
Dinesh Bhardwaj and Ummed singh Bisht (father of famous singer Kalpana Chauhan) wrote produced and directed a Garhwali play ‘Palayan’ under the banner of Garhwal Bhratri Mandal in 1989. The theme of ‘Palayan’ is based on the problem of migration from Garhwal to urban regions.
Garhwal Bhartri Mandal staged a couple of times a Garhwali play ‘Budya lapata’ written by Dinesh Bhardwaj and Raman Kukreti.
Around 1990-1995, Sonu Panwar staged ‘ Jhoudu latu’ a Garhwali play written by him two times. The drama is influenced by Amitabh Bacchan fame ‘ Shahnshah’a  Hindi feature film
Garhwal Kala Kendra, Jogeshwari , Mumbai  staged a Garhwali play ‘ Murkhalya Budya ‘ written and directed by Mahaveer Singh Bisht. The drama attacks sharply on the modern culture for not providing due respect to old values and at the same time criticizes the orthodox culture not understanding the need of transformation to adjust new culture. Dialogues are marvelous and are as per the characters.
Recently (2009-2011) , Baldev Rana has been staging a lyrical Garhwali play ‘ Bhad Madho Singh Bhandari’ in Mumbai and the Garhwali play has been getting good response from audience too.

There are dramas, films written or produced everywhere about worsening education system. For example, ‘Detachment’ film portrays various aspects of worsening education system. Daniel Appiah-ADjei wrote in a blog ( http://oralvillageideas.blogspot.in/2011/10/article-examination-malpractices.html) about Examination Malpractices with satirical tone.  There are many satirical articles written in Garhwali about worsening education system by Bhishma Kukreti and other satirists.
Kula Nand Ghansala wrote a very fine short drama ‘Complaint’ in Garhwali. The short drama deals with the aspects of only one teacher and students of five classes and how the teacher defies all the noble practices of teacher.  When the guardian complaints about his careless duties, the teacher says to complainer to what he wants to do. However, the teacher is shocked to find the reality.
The drama is written with more humorous style than satirical methods. The dialogues are common in rural Garhwal. Audience will laugh by listening dialogues of drama but then there is pain too just after every laugh.

(Review of Garhwali Drama ‘Choli’ (1971) written by Parashar Gaur)

                                    Bhishma Kukreti

There are many dramas/films based on search for husband love subject. For example, ‘When a man loves a woman’ (1994) film takes such subject.
The bird Choli is synonym of unfulfilled desires.  There is water in the ocean but the human being can’t take it. Parashar gaur wrote and directed ‘Choli’ drama in 1971. Parvteey Yuvak Manch Delhi presented and staged the Garhwali drama ‘Choli’ (1971) at All Indian Medical Association Hall, ITO Delhi on 25th December 1971.
The story of drama is sad story of a woman (performed by Sharda Negi). A Migrated Garhwali marries to a village girl of Garhwal. Newly bride comes to Delhi with her husband.      At the time of Garhwali king, there was less conflict between government agencies and villagers about the use of forest and forest products in Garhwal.  However, with the forest administration regulation by Trail (1826), the conflict between villagers and administration started.  Later on Tihri Garhwal king also started regulating the village land into government land for forest the conflict in Tihri Riyasat became evident.
The conflicts between villagers and government for forest uses by people, malpractices by selfish interest for forest products, fire in the forest by intentional, unintentional or ignorance  had been there from the day  Trail  brought forest regulation . There had been the questions from that day that what are the best ways to defuse the conflicts that forests develop and people e get their dues too.
Garhwali Drama ‘Ramu Patrol’ (1998) tries to answer some of questions. Uttarakhand Forest department Gopeshwar staged the awareness Drama about Forest Need, Deforestation, Forestation, Forest Protection and Protecting Eco-System in 1998 in Gopeshwar.  Ganesh Bhatt and Abbal Singh Khatri directed ‘Ramu Patrol’ drama about forest need, deforestation, forestation, forest protection and protecting eco-system.
There incidents about need of the forest produces for the needy ones, there incidents of need of forest for income to poor class, there events of people who believe government should not own the forest, there are forest mafia taking benefits of conflicts between governing agencies and villagers and there is worries in the forest department to keep forest developing and at the same time people should be satisfied too by getting benefits of developed and protected forests.
Thought, the drama is for awareness program but Ghansala uses his dramatic capability in choosing the events, incidents and proper dialogues that drama does not look like preaching drama but audience enjoys the drama.

Garhwali fiction writer and poet Om Prakash Semwal wrote short play ‘Garibee ‘for the school going students. The play was staged in Chopta in 1992.
The short Garhwali stage play is about the spread and its bad effects of alcoholism in Garhwal (Gham ast t Garhwal mast).
Envied by rich position of Nartu, Bhadu also starts country liquor business. Instead of sending school, Bhadu involves his son Gwabrya in liquor business. Bhadu usually beats Gwabrya for his mistakes. One day Gwabrya takes a cruelest step against his father’s beating.
The play takes two subjects together that alcoholism is because of older generation for appreciating alcohol consumption before the children and taking children in alcohol business. Another implicit story is that what you sow you will get the same.
The stage play or short drama ‘Garibee’ is written for morality teaching but morality is implicit in the stage play and there are no preaching speeches at all. The drama is successful in preaching against alcoholism and also teaches for better ways of parenting too.
Om Prakash Semwal uses simple dialogues keeping in mind the children as audience. The dialogues are from day to day life of rural Garhwal.

Nasha: An Awareness Garhwali Drama about Addiction

(Review of a short Garhwali Drama ‘Nasha’ (1993) written by Om Prakash Semwal)

                                     Bhishma Kukreti

Om Prakash Semwal wrote and staged ‘Nasha’ a Garhwali drama in August 1993 in Chamoli, Rudraprayag- Garhwal - Uttarakhand.  The drama is about making students and parents aware about the reasons, dark sides and the possibilities of being addiction free.  The drama makes aware parents that if the parents don’t look after the attitude and friend circle of their children there might be possibility of child getting tobacco or and drug addicted. If the parents don’t take care at initial level of addiction of the child it becomes very difficult for child leaving smoking or taking drugs.
Definitely the drama is written for one aim and that is for students. Therefore, writer paid attention on the finer points of the subject.
The short drama is also suitable for street theatre or as filler drama.

There was no forced dowry system in Vedic era, Mahabharata era or even in Gupta era in India. It is complex subject to find the initiating period of forced dowry in marriages. Before independence, there was just opposite custom that boy’s parents had to offer money for bride in Garhwal.
Worldwide there are many dramas, stage plays against dowry or showing bad effects of dowry on society as ‘The Fatal Dowry (1632, English), The dowry (a TV drama, 1953), Kalankani (Bengali drama), Ho Uzo Kedna Paloutolo (Goan) , Audal, Swayambar  (Garhwali dramas) , Dahej ki Ag(Haryanavi) etc.
Om Prakash Semwal wrote a drama ‘Daiju’ that creates awareness of evil of dowry. The drama is idealistic and written for students. ‘Daiju’ is staged in 1994 in (Old) Chamoli Garhwal.  The drama has simple dialogues and is straight plot with less of figurative dialogues.
There are les characters that students can stage the play showing evils of dowry.
