Kya Gori Kya Saunli (1975): portraying female characteristics Satirical means
(Review of Satirical Articles of Prolific Garhwali Satirists)

                              Bhishma Kukreti

[Notes on Satirical Articles; Garhwali Satirical Articles; Uttarakhandi Satirical Articles; Mid Himalayan regional language Satirical Articles; Himalayan regional language Satirical Articles; North Indian regional language Satirical Articles; Indian regional language Satirical Articles; South Asian regional language Satirical Articles; Asian regional language Satirical Articles]

The original Garhwali modern prose literature started from 1912- 1913. Bhakt Prahlad by Bhavani Datt Thapliyal is first Garhwali drama and ‘Garhwali That’ by Sada Nand Kukreti is first modern Garhwali short story.  Both the pieces of Garhwali prose literature are satirical literature.
Abodh Bandhu Bandhu Bahguna did not mention any word Vyangatmak Nibandh or lekh in Gad Myateki Ganga (a brief history of Garhwali prose, 1975).
However, by various means, the article ‘Kya Gori Kya Saunli ‘of Dr. Govind Chatak published in Gad Myateki Ganga (1975, page   65) is satirical article. The writer describes various characters of females differently with humorous ways.
Dr Chatak uses Garhwali proverbs with intense affectivity as
The phrases create laughter and irony too.
The article is serious and has sharp satire too.

Dhad magazine published a Garhwali satirical article ‘Talu Mixchar ‘by Naveen Chandra Nautiyal in its September 1988 issue.
The satire attacks on the dishonest behavior of today’s human beings. The Garhwali satire also deals with the persons who don’t abide their promises. The satire searches that people have ambitions for accepting responsibilities more than their capacity.
According to Anil Dabral the satire is an average satire in terms of language style and story line.

                        Bhishma Kukreti
Nathi Cahnd is the writer of a Garhwali satire ‘Jab Mai yampuri Gayo’ published in September Dhad 1988).
Ghimandu could not get seat for heaven as being a Garhwali laborer living in plains. However, bribe is a must for getting seat in hell too. Nathi Chand tries to push contemporary issues without required imagination. The satire is an average satire.

‘Sanstha’ is one of the remarkable satire articles of Garhwali literature written by Jagdish Badola.  The satirist took pain in planning, expanding and evaluating the write up (Dabral, 2007). Dr Dabral states that there is so much reality that by replacing the phrases the write up becomes a research paper.  The satirist Badola analyzed the so called social organization of Garhwali community with satirical tone.  Badola describes the duties of social workers for creating division in the society (Kh-b=Rajput-Brahmin) at the time of election in Garhwal.
In plains, the social organizations are of different kinds as expired social organizations, organizations on death bed, and many more
Badola used these words for classifying the Garhwali organizations
--म्वरीं संस्था
--मळया संस्था
--भग्यान संस्था
-जग्वळयण्या संस्था
--पिरामिडी संस्था
The creation is one the best examples of taking serious and real subject with satirical way.

Vikasau pahiya Motor: Striking new evils from Modern development
(Review of Garhwali satire of twentieth century)

                                   Bhishma Kukreti
[Notes on satire of twentieth century; Garhwali satire of twentieth century; Uttarakhandi language satire of twentieth century; Mid Himalayan regional language satire of twentieth century;  North Indian regional language satire of twentieth century;   Indian regional language satire of twentieth century;  South Asian regional language regional language satire of twentieth century;  Asian regional language satire of twentieth century]

Jagdish Badola had very good potentiality for creating satire. His article ‘Vikasau pahiya Motor’ (Dhad, magazine, 1989) is an example of his sharp satire creation. The people of Garhwal shout for development. The kind government offers motor road and other roads as development representation.
Now for developing Garhwal, people use roads for taking unauthorized wood logs to cities. Now liquor can reach easily from one region to other region. The roads are now the source of tea stalls etc.
The author makes readers aware about non productive development in Garhwal.

Garhwali Satire of Twentieth century by Bhishma Kukreti – 1
(Review of Garhwali satire and Satirists of twentieth Century)
Satire of Kukreti about standardization of Garhwali language those created stir

                                              Bhishma Kukreti

[Notes on regional language satire and satirists; Garhwali satire and satirists; Uttarakhandi regional language satire and satirists; Mid Himalayan regional language satire and satirists; Himalayan regional language satire and satirists; North Indian regional language satire and satirists; Indian regional language satire and satirists; South Asian regional language satire and satirists; Asian regional language satire and satirists]

Bhishma Kukreti used to write on daily basis for first Garhwali daily Garh Aina , Dehradun. Kukreti also used to create cartoons for the same daily newspaper. Kukreti also published his satirical articles in Paraj , Mumbai; Matri pad , Shri Nagar and anjwal, Buransh, Ghati  ke Garejate swar , Dehradun etc.
Bhishma Kukreti published his first satire ‘Been Barobar Garhwali’ or Garhwali for the sake of Garhwali in Dhad (1987-88) against the concept of standardization of Garhwali. His second satire against standardization of Garhwali was ‘ch, Chh Thau’ (dhad and Garh Aina, July, 1990). ‘Asli Nakli Garhwali was published in Dhad (June July 1991). Though his other satire against standardization were also published in Garh Aina as ‘whe t gyai smanakikaran’ etc
The concept of standardization is a noble idea. However, Kukreti stressed that when there is problem of Garhwali literature publication and readership increment the mere talk of standardization is of no use.
Dr. Dabral provides details of discussion started after the above satirical write ups. Bhagwati Prasad Nautiyal published his satire against ‘ch, chh thau’ and Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna, Mohan Babulkar came against article ‘Asli Nakli Garhwali’ Kukreti.  In ‘Asli Nakli Garhwali’, Kukreti humorously and satirically claims that Salani is best for standard Garhwali.
Dr Dabral states that ‘ch, chh , thau is an excellent example of satire. It is successful experiment that created hot discussion in contemporary Garhwali literature. The satire is sharp and is having best uses of word plays. Dr Dabral claims that there less energy in the satire.

Before Man Mohan Sing’s magic economical reform started there was a trend that Finance minister of Indian used to increase taxes. The businessmen used to inflate rates of consumables and commodities before the annual budget on 28th February. There was increment for railway tickets and goods trains in the current railway budget. The Ash-Soil (rakh aur Mitti) increased his rates just the railway minister finished his budget speech.  The satirical article ‘Kharu Matu Mainhgu kilai?’  by Bhishma Kukreti (Garh Aina, 30 July 1989) searches the real reason behind  Ash-Soil (rakh aur Mitti  )price hike by the supplier.  The Ash-Soil (rakh aur Mitti) supplier comments as-
"इखमा झूठ क्या च? मि अर्थ शास्त्र मा पी. एच .डी छौं”
"पण आपन किताब पौड़ी .मीन किताब नि पौड़ी . आप अंग्रेजी मा सोचिक अर अखबार पौड़ीक कुछ बि अंदाज लगै सकदवां. पण मि जु भुगतदो वै तै इ सचु माणदु ."

The satirical article exposes the mal practices by traders and manufacturers in India.

Hindi ki Bugyal: Bureaucratic way of promoting Hindi

(Review of Representative Garhwali humorous and satirical prose)

                           Bhishma Kukreti
This author when came to Mumbai, he had good numbers of literary friends government organization as Hindi officers. Many friends used to tell various tales about unwanted incidents in the Hindi department of public organizations. Based on the tales told by friends Bhishma Kukreti wrote a satire ‘Hindi k Bugyal’ (Garh Aina, 8th July 1989)
The write up satirizes on Hindi officers or managers inclining for English but working for promoting Hindi.  The article attacks of complicated and less used words being sent by government offices to the people or in internal memos.
Dr Pitambar Datt has habit of sending every Hindi letter to Hindi translators for translating into English. One day, Pitambar got personal letter but as habit he sent the letter to Hindi translator. The Hindi translator translated the letter into English. When Pitambar Datt read the original letter,  the letter  was as-
'पीताम्बर ! एक साल ह्व़े गेन तीन रूप्या नि भेजीं. मी मानि ग्यों कि म्यार कवी नौनु ह्वाई नी च. ब्वारी क गुलाम त तू छेंइ छयो. अब तयार दगड ब्व़े बाबू क जगा फर त्यार सास ससुर रौणा छन. ठीक च तू तौंकी तिरैं बरखी कौरी. हमर मुर्दा फर हाथ बि नि लगै."
The irony is that Hindi department in government agencies shouts about Hindi is our national language but children of Hindi go to English medium schools.
