                  Social conflicts have been there from the time human formed societies. Social conflicts also bring exploitation or exploitation by one or groups create social conflicts. The definition of wiki states that Social conflict is the struggle for agency or power in the society. The social conflict happen when one or more actors/groups oppose other groups for certain or one goal. 
                Exploitation in society is to deprive other’s human, religious, social or economical rights. As far as Garhwal and Kumaun is concerned, there have been lesser social conflicts and social exploitation among societies than other parts of Indian due to hard geographical conditions. However, one fact is very clear that when Rajput as Panwar or Chauhan and Brahmins as Nautiyal Bahugunas, Uniyal and Dimris settled in Garhwal they started exploiting the natives (Khasya). Later on, the society had three major castes –Brahmins, Rajput and Shilpkar.  Upper castes or Bitth society deprived Shilpkars from many rights.
              One of the major differences between upper caste and Shilpkar was that Shilpkar were not allowed to us Dola-Palki  (palanquin ) for marriage procession.  Due to Ary Samaj movement and freedom movement, Shilpkar understood their social right and they started struggle for their social rights. When Shilpkar started talking about their social rights there started social conflicts against exploitation by upper castes.  Riding by groom or bride in palanquin by Shilpkar became major source of social or class conflicts in Garhwal and Kumaun regions just before independence and after independence.
               Mohan Lal Negi wrote a fine Garhwali story ‘Dola Palki’. Mohan Lal Negi took this social conflict as conflicts of social values and faith. While the story ‘Amithya’ (Dhad, July 1988) story by Jabar singh Kaintura takes not using ‘Dola Palki’ by Shilpkar as major exploitation by upper castes.  The narration and depiction style of Jabar Singh Kaintura in story ‘Amithya’ clearly shows the two ways of thinking among Garhwali writers.  Mohan Lal Negi was the thinker of old values of Sanatan Dharma in India and Jabar Singh Kaintura seems to be stern supporter of Karl Marx. Being a union activist in Asoka Hotel, Delhi; Jabar Singh Kaintura also brought Karl Marxism in Garhwali story.  Definitely, it maybe said the communism thinking came in Garhwali story by story writers as Jabar Singh Kaintura and Mohan Lal Dhoundiyal (both union leaders in Asoka Hotel). Kaintura portrays social conflicts and exploitation with realistic mannerism and story is one of the realistic stories of modern Garhwali fiction.  Another difference between story of Mohan Lal Negi and Jabar Singh Kaintura is that Negi’s story is idealistic and the story by Kaintura is on base of realism. The storytelling style of Kaintura is more agile and with anger.

सिपड़ी बोडी कु नाती चमनू सख्त बिमार पड़ीगे.वैते अचणचक डाऊ,उल्टी,चक्कर शुरू ह्वैगे.अबी ऊ कुल पन्दरा साल कु छौ.वै तै डाऊ अर उल्टी,चक्कर का दगड़ बुखार बि ऐगे.खटुली मा पड़ीकी ऊ लटगिणू -फरकिणू छौ.ब्वे कमला पुंगडा मा जईं छै.दाजी हंसवा ब्वाडा गोर-बखरों मा पल्या बूण जयां छाया. बुबा रामसिंह दिल्ली मा एक कंपनी मा काम करदु छौ.
           घौर मा तब सिर्फ ददी सिपड़ी बोडी ही छै.दादीन सोचि कि ह्वै सकद दाग लगी गे होलू.वा एक कागज कु पुड्या पर लूण धैरिकी पदानों ख्वाळ गै.पदान सौरु तै बोलि कि चमनू तै क्याप ह्वैगे.जरा लूण मंत्री  द्या. घुत्ता पदानजिन लूण अपणा हाथ मा पकड़ी तिबारी मा बैठिकी लूण मंत्रनू शुरू करि.ऊंका आंख्युं मा पाणि कु तरपराट ह्वैगे.दगड़ मा जमै बि ह्वैगीं.लूण मंत्रिकी बोलि कि भौत मैरम दाग लग्यूं.चमनू का मुंड मा तीन दा परोखी दियां अर आगि मा धैरिकी वै तै सुंघै कि बौं हैड पडाळी दियां.बिलकुल ठीक ह्वै जालो.
             दादीन चट्ट घौर ऐकि उनि करि जनु ब्वल्यूं छौ.पण क्वी फरक नि पड़ी.वैको डाऊ हौरि जादा ह्वैगे.रात भर ऊ ऐड़ाट करणू रहे.वल्या-पल्या ख्वाळ बिटि सब्यूं कि भीड़ लगी गे.ब्यठुलोँ कु गिल गिलाट.क्वी ब्वल्द छल़े गे होलू,क्वी ब्वल्द गणत करवाओ,पूछ करवाओ.औज्यूं ख्वाळ बिटि सग्रामु ब्वाडा तै बि बुलै.ब्वाडन तीन दा रौखाळी करे,पण बीस कु उन्नीस नि ह्वै.चमनू बिचारा कि सरि रात उठा-पोड हुईं रै. हैंका दिन सुबेर चमनू कु दाजी हंसवा ब्वाडा अपणा दगड़ संतू काका तै लिजैकि पुछेरि मा चलि गे.पतगौं मा एक पर देबी नचद बल.लोग ब्वल्दीन कि वा तात्काळी च.सब ठीक-ठीक बतै दींद.पुछेरीन ज्यून्दाळ कांसी कि थकुली मा धैरिकी  बोलि कि धूप-बत्ती अर सौ रुप्या धैरी द्या.फिर बोलि कि तुमरो क्वी पुरण्या लग्यूं.जागर लगे दियां.द्यब्ता सब कुछ बतै द्यालू क्य कन.अब ऊ वख बिटि ही जागरि का घार चलि गीं.जागरि तै लिजैकि राति जागर कु प्रोग्राम बणि गे.
               हुडकी कु घमघमाट अर कांसी कि थकुली को झंझनाट मा सबि मन्खी मस्त ह्वैगीं.कुछ द्यब्ता बणी गीं.एक द्यब्ता मा जब निवारो ल़गै त वैन बोलि कि म्यारू क्वी दोष नि छा.तुम मि तै हरद्वार नवै दियां.जामा-लामा कैरि दियां.ख़ुशी मन से मेरि सेवा दे दियां.आज बिटि ही परचू मिलि जालो. डनड्याळी मा जागर लगणा छाया अर पल्या कमरा मा चमनू कु ऐड़ाट हुयूं छौ.ईं रात बि वैका गैर हाल हुयाँ रैं.
           सुबेर बि जब वैको डाऊ कम हूणा का बजाय हौरि जादा ह्वैगे त फिर पिनिस मा धैरिकी धुमाकोट सरकारी अस्पताळ मा लिजाण पड़ी.डॉ साबन चेकअप करे अर बोलि की एकी हालत खराब च.तुरंत भैर लिजाण पड़ल़ो.चट्ट रेफर करि की आपातकालीन १०८ सेवा से रामनगर भेजि दे.रामनगर मा संयुक्त चिकित्सालय मा इमरजेंसी मा चेकअप का बाद सर्जनन बोलि की अब्बी औप्रेशन कन पडलो,निथर अपेंडिक्स बर्स्ट ह्वै सकद.आनन-फानन मा ऑपरेशन थियेटर मा लिजैकि ऑपरेशन ह्वैगे.चमनू की जिंदगी बचि गे.ऑपरेशन का बाद डॉ साबन बोलि की मरीज अब ठीक च.जरा सि देर ह्वै जांदी त,एकी जिंदगी खतरा मा पड़ी जांदी.ईं हालत मा देर नि हूण चैंद.याँका वास्त जन जागरण की जरूरत छा.जल्दी से जल्दी मरीज तै अस्पताल ल्य़ाणु भौत जरूरी च.

                  Worldwide Concept of Selling Daughters for Survival
  There are many modern stories written on the subject of selling daughter by father for repaying loans in various language especially Asian languages and African languages including Garhwali. There are reports father selling daughter for repaying loan. There is a famous Thai sad story ‘Daughter for Sales’ about selling daughter for repaying loan. There are stories and poems in North Korean literature about selling daughter for repaying loan. The poem ‘I sell my daughter for 100’ by famous poet Kim Jang of North Korea stirred the literature creative and social figures. Mary M. Cameron has exclusive chapter on parents selling daughters in Nepal in the book ‘On the Edge of auspicious: Gender and Caste in Nepal (pp196..).  Jill E. Korbin provides lengthy details of selling daughters in China in his book ‘Child Abuse and Neglect: Cross Cultural prospective (pp -169).  Janice Stockard also provides stories of selling daughters in the book ‘Daughters of Canton Delta’.  Anthony Molho et all provide the concept of selling daughters in Europe (Finding Europe). Marko Hajdinjak illustrates the concept of selling daughters in Europe (Smuggling in Southeast Europe). Charles Eliot present s cases of concept of selling daughter in Africa (The East Africa Protectorate) . These and other literature show that the concept of selling daughters for survival is quite old concept and had been there in every community. Many American literatures creative raised the issue of selling daughters in their poetries and fictions.

                       Sava Ser Panch Man: A Story of Selling Daughter for repaying Loan 
 
  Sava Ser panch Man (Hilans, August 1988) is the story written by Vijay Lingwal. Poverty is an antique aspect of humanity and human beings does many unusual thing for removing poverty or debts.  Kamal Sing took loan for one thousand bucks from Padhan when the rice was available at five kilo per rupee and now the rate is one and quarter kilo per rupee.
Padhan pursued for recovery and Kamal Sing agrees to marry his daughter with Padhan for returning the debts. His daughter Rukma expires reaching to her in laws house.
 The story language is simple and with lot of Garhwali phrases.

                  Bhishma Kukreti is one of the signatures of developing modern Garhwali Stories. Abodh Bandhu states that he brings newer subject in the modern Garhwali story world. ‘Data ki Bwari Kan Dukhyari (Hilans, August, 1983) by Kukreti is about Data gets married and he had to leave her wife immediately as he has to join his duty in Lucknow. His wife fells ill and the medical practitioners   along with folk ritual practitioners  are fail to understand the problem of just married woman. When Taranath Dalya comes to village and tells the truth the villagers take action. In this woman psychological story, Kukreti uses fast story telling technique. Kukreti also depicts the concept of individual’s pain is social pain in rural Garhwal of sixties and before. Kukreti creates a strange village image (commonly found in rural Garhwal) in this story of woman psychology. Kukreti is successful in characterization in shorter maaner.  Garhwali phrases used in this woman psychological story accelerate the story and create images of rural Garhwal.

  Din (Dhad, October, 1988) is a marvelous, agile story by Jagdish ‘Jeewat’.  Dhannu is a widow and she has only son Mangtu.  Dhanu is in very bad situation as she has to struggle for every material for living. There is no alternate except daily labor work for Dhannu.  However, her god days return when Mangtu gets job.
  There is fast speed and flow in the story of Jagdish ‘Jeewat’ and story writer gets less time in characterization. Jagdish is successful in depicting struggle of widow for livelihood. The language is Hindi oriented.

सेठ बूबाजि बहुत सीधा-संत आदिम.अपणी शुरुवाती जिंदगी त ऊंन गरीबी बि मा ही काटी पण हर्बी दिन ठीक ऐगीन.चार नौनों मा तीन दिल्ली मा भली नौकरी मा लगी गीं.निकणसु धनेश तै बि कतगे जगों लगे पण ऊ उतगी दा नौकरी छोडिकी घर ऐगे अर घर गौं मा हैळ-तांगळ,मेह्नत-मजदूरी मा ही मस्त ह्वैगे.पलया गौं मा सौकार मास्टरजि  कु हैळ लगाणा का साथ-साथ  ऊंका हौरि काम बि कैरि देन्दु छौ.मास्टर जि बि भौत चंट चालाक,वैतई रोज ब्यखुन्या एक तुराक जरूर दे दींद छाया.रूप्या-पैसा दीं नि दीं,पण दारू जरूर दे दीन्दा छा.
           अब वैतई दारू की लत लगी गे.वैकि लदोड़ इनी तडम लगी कि बिन शराब कु नि रै सकदु छौ.जादा शराब का कारण हर्बी वैकि तब्यत बि ख़राब हूणि शुरू ह्वैगे.दिनभर रोज मेह्नत मजदूरी करणि अर शाम बगत दारू पीकी टल्ली ह्वै जाणु. खांसी-बुखार का दगड वैको जिगर बि ख़राब ह्वैगे छौ.एकदा काशीपुर बि गै चेकअप कराणों.डाक्टरोंन बोलि कि शराब नि पीणी.पण मनदू कु.ऊ दिन पर दिन जादा पीण लगी गे.अब वैसे काम-धाम बि जादा नि ह्वै सकदु छौ.दारू का चक्कर मा वैन कतगे लोगोँ से उधार बि करि दे. ब्यो-बारात मा इना-फुना लोगोँ कि खीसी बि जपगाणे आदत ह्वैगे.
          एक दिन सुबेर जब वैकि घरवाळी भरोसी देवी छनूडा मा जईं छै,वैन वींका सिरोंणा बिटि चाबी निकाळी अर बक्सा खोलीकि पांच सौ रूप्या निकाळी दीं अर बक्सा फिर उनि बंद करि दे.चार-पांच  दिन मा ही सबि रूप्या दारू मा सुट करि दीं. हैंका दिन बि वैन फिर ब्वारी कु बक्सा खोली.रूप्या त कुछ नि मिला पण एक डब्बा पर वींकु सोना कु गुलोबंद छौ.वैन गुलोबंद खसगै दे. दिन कि गाड़ी से रामनगर चलि गे.लगभग तीन तोला कु सोना कु गुलोबंद सुनार मा बेची दे.सुनारन छीजन-मीजन काटीकि तीस हजार दे दीं.अब वैन पैलि त रामनगर मा ही ठेका मा जैकि दारू ले.मुर्गा दारू सपोडिकी  कुछ खरीददारी बि करि.एक  रंगीन टीबी,घरवळी अर बाल-बच्चों का वास्त लारा लत्ता,कुछ राशन-पाणि,बि लेकि राति कि गाड़ी मा घर ऐगे.घरवळीन जब सामान,टीबी ,कपड़ा देखीं त बोलि कि रूप्या कख बिटि ऐं. वैन बोलि कि मिन जुआ मा जीतीं.वीं सोचि कि जुआ से त कैकि मवासी नि बणदी.पण चलो चार दिन कि चांदनी... कर्ज पत्ता देकी बाकी रूप्या कुछ दिन मा ही सुट करि दीं.   
           कुछ दिन बाद वा अपणा भदैया का चूडाकर्म मा जाणो तैयार ह्वै.वींन अपण बक्सा खोली,त देखि की झुला पर धरयां रूप्या नि छन.बक्सा मा सबि साड़ी-बिलोज एक -एक करि झाड़ी-झूड़ी की देखीं,पण नि मिला.फिर अपनों गुलोबंद देखि वींतै कुछ गड़बड़ लगी.पुराणो गुलोबंद चमाचम चमकणू छौ.वीं मैत जाणु छौ,वे तै ही पैन्निकी चलिगे.सौ रूप्या वा पड़ोस मा मास्टरणी दीदी से कर्ज गाड़ी की ले आई.अर बोलि की मैत बिटि ऐकि दे द्योंलू.
            मैत मा चूडाकर्म मा सबि रिश्तेदार अयाँ छाया.क्वी कुछ लायुं त क्वी कुछ.वा बिचारी क्य ल्यांदी,कख बिटि ल्यांदी.ऐन वक्त का बान ही त रूप्या धरयां छाया.वींन पचास रूप्या भदैया का हाथ मा धैरी दीं.एक दर्जन क्याल़ा बि लीगि छै.सौ रूप्या मा बाकी क्य हूंदू. वींकी बिल्कोट वाळी दीदी दिल्ली बिटि ईं छै.वीं तै भरोसी का घर की हालत मालूम छै.वा अपणि भुली का वास्त साड़ी-बिलोज लईं छै.पांच सौ रूप्या अर साड़ी देकी बोलि की तू फिकर न कैर हम त छौ. अपणा बच्चों तै पाळी ले. एक न एक दिन त्यारा दिन बि आला. वै निर्भगीन त नि सुधरणु.तिन ठीक करि जु आर्टिफिसियल गुलोबंद पैनिकी ले.इना-फुना हर्चणा की बि डैर रैंद.भरोसी कुछ नि बोलि,बस वींका आंसू टपगण शुरू ह्वै गीं.
              हैंका दिन सुबेर मैत बिटि आन्द दा वींतै खूब रूप्या मिलि गीं.पांच सौ रूप्या पिठे लगी,साड़ी-बिलोज,कंडी-बोजी बि दे.सबि दीदी- भुल्यों,रिश्तेदारोंन बि वींतै रुप्या दीं.वीं देखिकी सब्युं तै कळ कळी लगणी छै कि यींकू आदिम दरवल्या ह्वैगे.कमांदु कुछ नीं.घर कि हालत खराब ह्वैगीं.आन्द बगत धुमाकोट मा सुनार का पास गे.गुलोबंद दिखैकी बोलि कि भैजी ये तै तोली द्यो.कतगा कु होलू.सुनारन गुलोबंद देखिकी बोलि कि भैनजि मजाक नि कारा.नकली गुलोबंद कु बि क्वी तोल-मोल हूंद क्या.डेढ़ सौ रूप्या मा लियां नकली गुलोबंद कि क्य कीमत ह्वै सकद.कुछ बि ना.पुराणो ह्वै जालो त कबाड़ मा खैती दियां अर हैंकु ले लियां.वा खिसयीं बिचारी चुप चाप घर ऐगे.
               घर मा पहुचिकी वींन अपणा जवैं धनेश तै पूछि कि तिन म्यारा रुप्या चोरी दीं अर असली गुल़ोबंद बेचिकी नकली बक्सा मा धैरी दे.तिन किलै करि इनु ? वैन पैलि त ना ना बोलि,पण जब वींन बोलि कि आज मिन तीसे जबाब लेकि ही रैण.वैन पैलि त चुप रै चुप रै बोलि पण जब वा नि मानि त वींका कापाळ मा एक जोर कि कटाग लखड़ा कि मारि दे.कपाळी मा गुरमुल़ू उपडीगे.वींकु मुंड चकरे गे. वा कपाळ पकड़ी कि खटुली मा पड़ी गे.वींकी अन्सधरी रुकणी  नि छै.

                      Pundit Vidya Sagar (Dhad, October 1990) by Jay Prakash Bamola is a humorous and inspirational story. Pundit Vidya Sagar was expert in orating religious rituals but was did not know reading. Pundit ji used to give ritual book some body for reading and Vidya Sagar used to orate the rituals himself. One day, by mistake, the ritual book was replaced with  a children book and there became a confusion and chaos at the time of marriage ritual. Vidya Sagar takes vow for learning.
              The style is humorous. The small story has speedy flow. The story writer did not get time in characterization or emotion depiction. Bamola used Hindi phrases commonly.

            There are many tragic stories about widow and her struggle all over world. There are heartrending stories about a widow in Sanskrit literature. There are tragic, sad stories about widow in all the Indian languages. There are sad tragic tales in modern Garhwali literature about the struggle of widows. Mary Swell wrote stories about struggle of widow.  For example, Barbara Hofland wrote story on widow. Guy de Maupassant provides tragic story of widow. Mussaraf Ali Faruqi wrote a fine novel on a Pakistani widow.
           Gani (Dhad, October, 1990) is a Garhwali story by Mahendra Singh Rawat in Garhwali about Chaita becomes widow on the marriage day. Her husband was not present at marriage procession as it was ‘Takaun-Byau” , her so called husband died in city.  Now she is widow and community blames for her husband’s death that dies far away from village. Chaita is already an orphan and now she has to suffer the blames of society.
              The story has flaw of unfocused characterization of Chaita and a couple of unwanted events. However, due to unique subject and simple narrative style, the story is effective

  The folk literature of every language and culture is full of ghost stories. There is tradition of ghost stories in modern literature.
   Lalit Keshwan wrote a couple of modern stories about ghost. This author asks him about these ghost stories and Lalit Keshwan stated that these ghost stories were based on real events happened in his area.
 Thail Dada (Hilans, January 1985) is based on true story of a folk ritual performer Mantrik. Barmanand is famous for eradicating the effects of Ghost and vampires in his area. Barmanand not only eradicates the effects of ghost and vampires but he gets them out from the area through his Mantra and tantric.
 One day, two persons come to invite him for eradication of Bhoot/Ghost/supernatural souls/vampires. They gave him money in advance.  They were in fact ghosts and they brought Barman Nand where othergghosts and vampires were gathered to teach lesson to Barmanand baman . They beat Barmanand baman with all means.  Barmanand was brought back seriously ill by two ghosts. From that day, barmanand never came out of his room till his death.
  The story is told as folk stories are told that Thail dada telling tale to his grand children. The story telling style is simple and Keshwan avoids thrill and fear in the story.
   Surprisingly, Lalit does not use his humorous style in Garhwali stories as he uses humor in his poems.

  Bhishma Kukreti provides details of modern ghost story writers of 190 languages his long article ‘Kathaon ki Katha  (2012) ) being published in series in weekly, Shailvani, Kotdwara, India.
   In the book ‘Discovering Modern horror Fiction’ by Darrel Schweitzer (1985), there are ghost stories and bibliographical list and annotates about the subject.
Mike Ashley provides the works of modern fiction writers those wrote ghost stories in his book “who is who is in Horror and fantasy fiction’ (1977).
‘The Check list of science fiction and Supernatural fiction’ by Bleiler (1978) offers biographical details of modern ghost stories and science fiction.
‘Guide to Supernatural Fiction (1983) provides the details of 700o stories of English language from mid eighteenth to modern time dealing with ghost and supernatural stories.
Readers find references of ghost stories of modern time in the works of Lovercraft, 1983, A Critical study: contribution to the study of science fiction and fantasy’, Vol -5 (1983). 
The book ‘Shadow of shade: A Survey of vampirism in Literature’ by M.L. Carter surveys of 300 British stories of English language related to vampirism and ghost tradition in Britain.
L .Daniels (1975) provides historical background of horror, ghost, in fictions, films, magazines, comics, radio plays, television plays, stage plays and poems’
R. Reginald (1979) presents standard bibliographical data of ghost and supernatural fiction and other supernatural subject writings in the book ‘Science fiction and fantasy Literature.
Nicholas Rzhevsky (2005) put forwards modern Russian ghost stories in book ‘An Anthology of Russian Literature from earliest writings to Modern fiction’.
Laurence C. Bush (2001) provides Ghost story as genre in Asia in his book ‘Asian Horror encyclopedia’.
 Dorothy Scarborough (2006) offers readers a summary of some greatest known and unknown works of English literature about Ghost subject in the book ‘The supernatural in Modern English Fiction’.
Janice Rossen (2006) presents the examples of women writing modern stories about ghost in ‘Women writing Modern fiction’.

                    Great satire poet of world literature Lalit Keshwan wrote five stories in Garhwali and surprisingly all are related to ghost or dissatisfied souls. Mwarin Santa (Hilans, November, 1985) by Keshwan is about a female dissatisfied soul.  Sprit of Santa enters into body of Veera and her body becomes tense. Mantrik comes and Santa’s sprit asks a few things. Veera is given all the materials those were asked by Santa’s sprit.  However, there was debt of Santa on a few people of village. Santa (in Veera’s body) goes to every person asks to return her debt. They returned the debt. Veera walks fast towards madghat (cremation area) and it was surprise for veera’s father.
  The biggest flaw of the story is that there is no fear, suspense, curiosity in the story. Howver, the simple way of tale telling technique by Keshwan covers all flaws required for modern ghost stories.
