Umal: Importance of Sharing own Story (affliction)

(Review of Garhwal Story Collection ‘Mwari’ by Durga Prasad Ghildiyal

                                         Bhishma Kukreti
[Notes on Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story /affliction ; Garhwali Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction; Uttarakhandi Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction; Mid Himalayan Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction; Himalayan Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction; North Indian Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction; Indian Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction; South Asian Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction; Asian Stories about Importance of Sharing own Story/affliction]
Durga Prasad Ghildiyal is different in storytelling methodology among Garhwali story writers. ‘Umal’ story tells the universal truth that very body wants to empty the mind by telling something to somebody.
The story teller concludes his story theme at the beginning of story in following words
 "ह्याँ बोडि , जब मन मा उमाळ उठद ट वे उमाळ भैर गाड़ीक सच्ची इ भरि शांति मिलदी . मन हळको ह्व़े जांद "
Daya Nand meets his friend Veer Singh’s eighty years old mother. She shows her mental agony about peace of mind. Eighty years old woman wanted to tell something. Daya Nand does not have time. Daya Nand comes again when she was alone and she tells her story. Bodi feels satisfaction after telling her story to somebody. She was feeling weightless.
Bodi dies after a few days of this incident.
Durga Prasad is successful in portraying a psychological point of the importance of sharing to another person by a person about affliction, pain, happiness or achievement- non achievement.

Apjas:  Story about Self pity due to Disrepute
(Review of Garhwali Story Collection ‘Mwari’ by Durga Prasad Ghildiyal)

[Notes on Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; Garhwali Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; Uttarakhandi Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; Mid Himalayan Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; Himalayan Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; North Indian Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; Indian Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; South Asian Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute; Asian Stories about Self pity due to Disrepute]
Disrepute, disgrace, ill repute, disrespect, disregard, insolence or impertinence is such pain that person feels self –pity and self-pity is always hurting for human.
Umesh goes to Delhi with Mohan Singh for getting employment and parents of Umesh were feeling obliged to Mohan Singh. However, Umesh ran away from there and there was no sign of Umesh anywhere. It is Apjas on Mohan Singh. Later, after many years, younger brother of Umesh Vinod is returning to village from Delhi with Mohan Singh, Mohan Singh is again worried for new ‘Apjas’ (disrepute). Umesh returns to village from Vanaras as professor and they all meet in village. Now everybody is clean slate. Now, nobody feels self pity.
The story deals effectively with the pain of self pity due to disrepute.

The talking terms ends between the two families due to confusion. Due to pride, the terms do not alter. However, one day comes when Subedar realizes that arrogance is not the way of life.

Swag-Bhag: Life is greater than Material
(Review of Garhwali Story Collection ‘Mwari(1986) by Durga Prasad Ghildiyal)
                                  Bhishma Kukreti

The famous flood of Satpuli is one of the greatest recent disasters of Garhwal. Tens of buses fled along with drivers and others.
There is folk song about flood of river Near at Satpuli.
Satpuli moter baugin khaas
Darshanu was one of the bus drivers whose bus was standing at Satpuli bus stand. Garhwal union declared that Darshanu is no more. His younger brother Kamlu finds Darshanu. They come to home. Darshanu’s wife asks Kamlu,” Did you bring some thing for me?”
Another person answers,” Your Swag-bhag(your husband).”
There are other incidents in the story as the reason of migration etc. The story is very interesting. The story telling style of Ghildiyal is effective.

Hukam Singh comes back to his ancestral village from Delhi after retirement. The ancestral house was in very bad shape- with full of plants and shrubs. Hukam Singh repairs the ruined hose and invites villagers to celebrate home coming ceremony. When Hukam Singh did not repair the hose the villagers used to talk in sarcastic language. Now when the hose is perfect with urban facilities the villagers stile talk behind him sarcastically.
It was very pleasing shock to the villagers when Hukam Sing tells the secret of his repairing old ancestral house.

Udghatan: Story about village Development by Cooperation

(Review of Garhwali Story Collection ‘Mwari (1986) by Durga Prasad Ghildiyal)

                                        Bhishma Kukreti
[Notes on story about village development; Garhwali story about village development; Uttarakhandi story about village development; Mid Himalayan story about village development; Himalayan story about village development; North Indian story about village development;  Indian story about village development; South Asian story about village development; Asian story about village development]

Every time, in every era, there are different aspirations for the society. After independent, there were fewer schools in Garhwal. There was social aspiration that boys get education and get employment in plains.
Mwari is about education awareness and building schools in village through cooperation. The brighter part of the story is that the new generation understands the importance of succession for taking social works.

The generation gap is not about the differences of emotions but the generation gap is the differences of physical means between two generations for achieving the goal.
There is a generation gap between Ghanshyam and his son Sattu.  Sattu comes to understand that his and his father’s desires were same and the differences between him and his dad were about means of achieving the target.
