Gahwali Vyakaran ki Roop Rekha : Garhwali Language Grammar by Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna
                                                      Bhishma Kukreti
Many of my learned friends as Manmohan Jakhmola (Bronze Medalist - M.A in English from Garhwal University) or comments on discussion board of many Internet sites as younguttaranchal.com state that Garhwali is not language because there in grammar book or standardization in Garhwali language or for Garhwali language. This author feels sorry for such comments. There cannot be a language spoken or written if there is no grammar for it. It is also not necessary that the grammar should be written or published.
The misconception that Garhwali does not have grammar is because there are many dialects in Garhwali but all dialects of Garhwal are bound by same grammatical standard .
As far as book or literature on Garhwali grammar is concerned , Garhwali language is fortunate that there is a book on understanding basic of Garhwali language grammar that is Garhwali Vyakaran Ki Roop Rekha written by Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna. Akhil Bharatiya Garhwal Sabha , Dehradun is also arranging to publish a book on Garhwali Grammar.
Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna published Garhwali Vyakaran ki Roop Rekha or An Introduction of Garhwali Grammar in Hindi in 1960. Till, now no other literary person published another book on Garhwali grammar.
The book Garhwali Vyakaran ki Roop Rekha or an Introduction has the following chapters:
1-  Shabdon ke Bhed or Structure of words:  Bahuguna explained in short but effectively in this chapter :
A- Types of Noun and how the nouns are formed by verb, adjectives, pronound, adjectives
B-Gender and rules for gender formation
        C -numbers
       D- Pronoun
        E-Adjectives
        F- Adjective
         G- Relationship
         H- Verb
          I-Tenses
          J- Prefix and suffix
           K- Alternate words
            L - Opposite words
            M- Addition and compound words
            N- Prosody
O- Rapture and Figure of speech
Bahuguna has also provided list of 500 Garhwali words and their meanings in Hindi and Garhwali
The book Garhwali Vyakaran ki Roop Rekha  is very useful for understanding basic grammar of Garhwali language. Bahuguna provided example for each aspect of grammar . The language of Bahuguna is simple to understand the grammar of Garhwali and is useful for non-Garhwalis too.

Dr. Umashankar ‘Satish’ : Portrayer Garhwali Village Life in Garhwali Poems
                                            Bhishma Kukreti
Dr Umahsnakar ‘Satish’ is famous for his portraying the village life of Garhwal in his Garhwali language poetries. Umashankar Satish has tremendous sympathy with migrated labour class and this sympathy is visible in his many poems. The poems of Umashankar about sympathy with emigrant Garhwali Indian struggling in plains compel the readers for thinking the discrimination of administration   and political juntas for no development in rural Garhwal and these poems create frustration in the mind of readers , which incline to think about need of the autonomy in the hilly areas for self-planning for developing hill districts of Uttarakhand. No doubt, the separate state Uttarakhand movement caught momentum from early nineties but  the poems and thinking of poet cum intellectual as Umashankar Satish sow the seeds or need of the separate state for hilly districts of Uttar Pradesh . ‘Satish’ is also famous for creating emotional poems and imagery poems .
Dr Umashankar ‘Satish’ was born in 1937 in a Himalayan village of Nagpur area of Chamoli Garhwal.  Dr Umashankar  is  a melodious  singer too
Dr Umashankar ‘Satish’ published hundred of poems in regional periodicals and his two collections of poems ‘ Raimasi’ and ‘Khuded’ (1956) induce critics to read his other poems too.
Dr Umashankar created poems for varied subjects, his poems are of different raptures and emotions. He created pathos and frustration oriented poems very well . The poem-
Bitailya chhaya sal char vain
Atthani tankha ma badhi gen
Shows his concern over the worsening conditions of emigrant garhwali labour class in Indian plains who are forced to migrate from Garhwal because of no employment in Garhwal,
Umashankar is expert of portraying a place of area in such a way that the readers feel the total experiencing of the territory  concern.
Satish wrote poems about love and he connect the love communication with the symbolic flora and fauna of Garhwal.
Twai se pirem mera
Tero rup rang teri sya chal
Tero surilo sur basad jan munal
….
Teri hiranai si ankhi teri swani mukhadi
..
Tri dathuli ka saun , twai se perem myaro
Dr Umashankar did not hesitate for using  the dialects of Nagpur region of Chamoli Garhwal in creating his poetries.  Dr Umashankar used conventional style  of Garhwali poems in his creating poems and poems are melodious from all angels.

Dr Veerendra Panwar  the eminent poet and critic of Garhwali language from Pauri city supports the ‘ Purism in Garhwali Movement’ but asks where is the work on this vital issue at grass root level in Garhwal.
(Comments of  Bhishma Kukreti : First there should be continuous discussion on the subject then only the subject will reach to grass root level in Garhwal, It is sure that Garhwalis of Garhwal will protect eroding Garhwali language and no body should hope from emigrant Garhwali  for protecting Purism in Garhwali)

                               Bhishma Kukreti
Narendra Kathait will always, be remembered for the first Garhwali satire prose maker who published first time the collection of Garhwali satire essays and article-Kulla Pichkari. . Narendra Kathait is one of the prominent signatures in writing satiric and humorous Garhwali prose. Narendra attacks wrong happenings and cause of wrong happenings in rural Garhwal. The satire of Narendra Kathait is always to the point and abstemious but compel the readers for thinking the causes of wrong happenings in the society.
Narendra Kathait is born in Kidwai Nagar , New Delhi on 28th April 1966. After graduating , Narendra Kathait joined Akashvani Pauri. Originally, Narendra Kathait belongs to Himalayan village-Salda, Bangadhsyun, Pauri Garhwal.
As far as satiric prose (article0 in Garhwali  is concerned,  Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna (Dhad of May, 1991) said that there have been least numbers of satirist in Garhwali prose making . In 1991, Bahuguna mentioned that Govind Chatak and Jagdish Badola have written a couple of prose satire in Garhwali and Bhishma Kukreti published more than four hundred satiric articles. However, Puran Pant (Garhwali Dhai, 3rd October, 2009) mentioned that till date, Bhishma Kukreti has published more than one thousand satiric articles .Puran Pant Pathik,  Pritam Apanchhanak , Harish Juyal have also wrote a couple of satiric prose. However, there have not been writers in Garhwali prose who take this satiric field seriously except Bhishma Kukreti and Narendra Kathait . There is vast difference between the writing style of Bhishma Kukreti and Narendra Kathait.
Narendra Kathait wrote satiric drama - Dr Asharam (2003), Kula Pichkari (2007) a collection of satiric articles,  Lagyan Ra (2009) second collection of garhwali satiric article. Narendra Kathait also wrote poetries in Garhwali and published his collection of Garhwali poetries ‘Tup-Tup in 2006 and ‘Pani in 2009. Narendra wrote poetries in Hindi too.

Garhwali satire creator   Bhishma Kukreti and critics Bhagwati Prasad Nautyal, Dr Nand Kishor Dhoundiyal praised Narendra Kathait for his observation about wrong happenings, bad customs, no-desirable , non beneficial changes taking place in the society , weakening of close relationship in the society, ridicules happenings in the society,  other weaknesses in society or in government administration and then Narendra Kathait attacking them with style and fierce .  Satirist should have a sharp observing power and should also use comparison between the two situations. As a new generation satirists, Narendra Kathait fulfills both the conditions of a satiric prose maker.
In true sense, Narendra Kathait fulfills the various definitions of satiric writings set by Charles Churchill, Caius Cornelius Tacticus, Meredith, Swift, Robert Harris, Maynard jack, Clark, M.S Abraham , Stanley Lane Poole, Simpson, William Hass.
Narendra Kathait writes in  simple language for common men , hesitate to limit himself for intellectual readers and never hesitates to use the dialects of Bangadhsyun area. His uses of regional dialects are useful for protecting the purity of Garhwali language. Narendra’s uses of regional dialects also help him to create  his own style in Garhwali prose making  . Narendra has been successful  using common Garhwali proverbs, folk saying for creating aggression in satire prose. Narendra Kathait also transformed many Hindi words into Garhwali words and this work of Kathait should be appreciated loudly.
Variation in style is concerned, Narendra does less experiments and focuses on his own way of showing ridicules.
Narendra Kathait has tremendous potentiality for creating and writing thousands of satiric essays.

Puran Pant ‘Pathik’: A Prominent Signature in Garhwali Satiric Poetries
                                               Bhishma Kukreti
Puran Pant Pathik is famous satiric poet of Neo-Modern Garhwali poetic world. Poets as  Puran Pant Pathik, Vinod Uniyal, Netra Singh Aswal  accelerate  the progress of Jayanand Khuksal, Kanhaya Lal Dandriyal, Giridhari Lal Kankal and Lalt Mohan Keshwan making Garhwali language poetry as modern and versatile,  as other prominent Indian Languages as Hindi, Bengali, Marathi or Tamil were progressing . Puran Pant is also a prose write, editor, story teller and satiric prose maker but Puran pant is discussed more for his intellectual satiric poetries. By nature , Puran Pant  ‘Pathik’ is rebellion and the readers may find rebellious voice in his poems and prose.
Puran Pant Pathik was born in January , 1951 in a remote Himalayan village Kimgdigadh , Pokhada block of Pauri Garhwal. After graduating, Pant  worked with various organizations but could not settle anywhere because of his blunt opposition of wrong happenings or un-righteous works  imposed on him by his superior.
Puran Pant ‘Pathik’ started writing and publishing Garhwali language poems from 1969. Pant might have created more than three hundred poems in Garhwali published in various regional periodicals and relayed from All India Radio.
Puran pant Pathik has been publishing ’Garhwali Dhai’ a  Garhwali language weekly 1993. His editorial collections ‘ Garhwali Dhai ka das sal’ is also published in book form
‘ Pathik ka Geet’ (1975), Batohi ka Raibar ( 1977), Mera Bwada ( 1989), and Apnyasa ka Jalda ( 2005) are his collections of poems, which represent the versatile nature and form of poems of Pant.
Puran pant is praised for his new experiment in Garhwali poems in terms of form, subjects and connecting poetry with people. Pant says that poetry should be written for the common man about them only. No doubt, this author put Puran Pant the poet of intellectuals but Puran Pant refuse this author’s statement.
Puran pant created Garhwali poems in conventional Geet form, new experimental formats too. Pant also wrote a couple of Gazals in Garhwali language too.
As far as satire creation is concerned , Bhishma Kukreti calls him very sharp and ‘Agyo karan wal kavi (who rains fire by his poem)’. When Pant criticizes wrong happenings, he uses sharp words and many times common abusing Garhwali language too. His uses of abusing language brings a different flow in the poem and connects the poem with common men. Using sharp words in satiric poems make him different than his contemporary :
 Apni bwai ka mais/
Hola vo/
Jo
Hamari jikudi ma
Ghaitana rain
Gahitna chhan
Keela/bada/danda/
Jo,
Hamari nam par
Kagaj lapedik
Filon ka thpda lagaika ….
….
Ham tain ullu ka patha samkhik
Mauj masti -matargasti kaurikai
Apni mawasi bannan par misyan chhan
Apan bawi ka mais hola
Puran pant does not leave any body in criticizing who is wrong either in government administration or social field.  Puran pant uses common symbolic words for attaching his poems to the readers. Many times, he criticizes the system so bluntly that his poems leave satiric form and those poems become pure critic poems.  Readers may also find the progressive development in the Pant’s poetry creation every year by reading his each poetry collection.
Puran Pant Pathik is one of the Garhwali poets who provided new form, new ways of thinking, progressive way of creating poetries, not to hesitate doing experiments , blend fantasy with realism, take the poetries to the common men in Garhwali Poetry field. It is more than impossible to describe Garhwali language Poetry without Puran Pant Pathik.
(the author will write separately about prose of Puran Pant )
