Characteristics of Garhwali Children Folk Songs and Other Country’s Children songs About Learning Alphabets

                 Author aims at finding the fundamental characteristics of Garhwali children folk song and children songs of various languages for teaching the alphabets.
        From language point of view, psychologists found the following characteristics ina two year old child”
1- Enjoys participation in reading
2-Comes to know that language brings desired response
3-Can use fifty to three hundred words or there is increment in vocabulary
4-Most the words, a child use is related to him or her
5- Receptive language is developed more than expressive (can understand more than can express)
6- Starts using negative words
7-Starts using plurals which are simple
8-Speech is 60-70 percent intangible
9- Can verbalize needs
             Psychologists found the following major aspects of language in child development (4 years old child):
1-Uses prepositions
2-Uses possessive consistently
3-Answers whose, where ..
4- Produces elaborated sentences
5-Speech is entirely almost intangible
6-Begins to use correctly past tense of verbs
7-Refer to activities, events, objects, people that are not present
8- Starts to change tone of voice and sentences structure for adapting the level of listeners
9-states first and last name, gender, sibling’s name and at times telephone numbers
10-, Answers apprperately in case of tired, cold, hunger etc
11-Recites simple songs, poems
                               Garhwali (Indian) Children Folk Song teaching Alphabets
  In Garhwali language, there are tens of children folk songs aimed to teach alphabets. Dr Nand Kishor Dhoundiyal and Dr Manorama Dhoundiyal collected few songs. However, there are other songs too.
    One of many folk song teaching Devnagari alphabet is as :

      It is said that Emperor Wu (sixth century) commissioned ascholar  Zua Hing Zi to compose apoem for his  prince to practice  Calligraphy. The poem has 250 phrases of 4 characters each from ‘j yutping’. The classic also teaches numbers from 1 to 1000.

              Studying the above rhymes of various languages aiming to teach alphabets (formally or informally) the following conclusion is out
    1- Whether there are folk/traditional songs or is three thousand song, the creator have taken care to know the language grabbing power of child
2- The poems are simple
3- The words are not heavy or complex
4- There also words which do not have meaning but are essential for creating lyrical effects
5- Singing is more important than the words that child starts attachment towards alphabets
6- Whether modern or old songs, the creators have real experience of child learning capability.
7- Less plurals are used in most of the poems
           Over all , all the poems are perfect in tackling the grabbing power or language acquisition  power of child for language.

Analysis of Garhwali Counting –Out Folk Songs and Counting –Out Children songs of other languages

                      Counting teaching by society has been taking place from centuries ago.  The following major aspects are important to discuss the uniqueness of children counting song of any language or region.
1- People learn through observations
             Psychologists as Albert Bandura observed through their researches that child or people learn many aspects through observations. Bandura identified following three models of learning through observations
1A-The live model acts as influencing learning
1B- A verbal instruction model (explanations and description)
1C- a symboli model as icon, characters in books, films etc
2- Mental factors are important too as pride, satisfaction and sense of achievement
3- It is not necessary that learning changes behaviour
4a- Not all observed are affectively learned
4b--Learning requires attention
4c-Learning requires retention
5-Learning also requires motivation
Learning Counting through Songs and Aspects of ‘Numerical Mechanism and children Concept of Counting’
                Scientists, psychologists, sociologists and educationists discovered many findings about counting in relation to children. These findings are very important in judging the importance of songs related to teaching counting to children. Some relevant observations about numerical mechanism and children concept of counting are as:
1-Mramasse et all state that as like animals, children are quite accurate about small numbers and can compute approximately the large numbers
2- Starkley et all (1983) found that the infants of 4 to 7 .5 months old child can discriminate two items from three items but not 4 items from 6 items.
3-Strauss and Curtis (1981) found that 10-12 months old infants can discriminate 3 from 4 items and sometimes 4 from 5 items. However, it is not clear tha infants know 2 is higher than 1
4- In Garhwali, Kumauni (Indian), Chinese languages, the teaching of numbers were grouped in either ten or twenty. For example, in ancient Garhwal and Kumaun (India (before 1947 or when  education was sin scarcity) , the numbers were spoken in terms of twenty as 58 =two twenty and eighteen (dwee beesi ar sattara)
5 Counting principles: Gelman and Galistel (1978) briefed about five counting principle of learning
5a- One-to-One theory: The theory stresses the significance of assigning only one counting tag to each counted arrangement
5b-The Stable order theory: Counting occupies more than the ability to allot arbitrary tags to iems in array.
5c-The cardinal theory: The theory reproduces the child’s understanding that the last number word of an arrangement of counted items has a particular meaning: it signifies the set as a whole and the numerosity of this set of articles.
5d-The abstraction theory: The realization is reflected what is counted. it is found that the 2-3 years old infants can count mixed sets of objects
5e-The order-irrelevance theory: the child has to learn that the order of enumeration is irrelevant
6 -Early Arithmetical Skills 
           Starkey (1992) showed that very young children could represent numerical quantities without the use of language.
7-Arithmatical development: The child learns the culture’s numbers words and associates these words with sets of objects as - five for all fingers

               There are tens of children songs helping children to learn counting in United Kingdom. One example is as:

  The children counting songs of America, Italy, China and in other countries are in the above pattern         
  1- After studying the psychological points cited the above, it may be said that though the song creators were not psychologists but they took care about the nature of human beings ability to learn counting
2- In all songs including Garhwali (Indian) folk song, the objectives are fit with the song that children associate the known objective with the numbers       
3-Tthe song creators were aware about importance of attention of child and then retention by the child aspects in learning counting 
4-  The words in children counting-out songs are simple and kept to create poetic rapture that children repeat the songs within groups or individually.   
   The above analysis and psychological aspects described in this write up confirms that the Garhwali Children Counting-Out  Folk Songs   are perfetc songs for learning numbers by children.

        Literature on Garhwali Language’s Children Folk Songs and World Literature on Children Folk Songs

 (Abstract: in this write up, the author attempts to explore the literature on children folk songs of Garhwali language and books in English language available n the subject of children folksongs or children folk poetries of each country or regions as children folk songs of African countries, Children folk poetry of Asian countries, Children folk songs of south and Central American countries, USA and Canada; European folk songs for children and children folk songs of Pacific countries. )
               There are tens of children folk songs available in Garhwal (India) but the scholars could collect less children folk songs than they are in actually available in numbers.
 Gairola and Okley (1890) initiated to collect Garhwali (Indian) folk literature . Ganga Datt Upreti (1995) published book on Folk proverbs of Kumaun and Garhwal.
                 From Garhwali folk literature point of view, Abodh Bandhu Bahuguna, Dr Govind Chatak, Dr Hari Datt Bhatt Shailesh, Dr Mohan Babulkar, Dr Shiva Nand Nautiyal, Dr Shiv Prasad Dabral, Chakra Dhar Bahuguna, Veena Pani Joshi, Bhishma Kukreti, Dr Vishnu Datt Kukreti, Dr D R Purohit, Nand Kishor Hatwal , Puskar singh Kandari  are the pioneers in publishing different genre  of Garhwali folk literature.   As far as Garhwali language’s children folk songs is concerned, the genre was ignored by scholars for long.
              Credit goes to  Dr Nand Kishor Dhoundiyal and dr Manorama Dhoundiyal took initiative for collecting and publishing children folk songs of Garhwali language.
       Dr Nand Kishor Dhoundiyal and Dr Manorama Dhoundiyal published book on Garhwali language children folk songs in the name of Garhwali Balgeet in 2009.
  There are following children folk songs in Garhwali Balgeet
1- Lullabies
2-Indistinct wording children folk songs
3-Distictive wording children folk songs
4-The song based on alphabetical chronology based children folk songs
5-Children songs related to numbers and mathematics
6-Children folk songs of farming, horticulture, floriculture and shepherded
7- Joking and amusing children folk songs sung by children
8- Children folk songs related to children games
9- Children folk songs related to domestic animals, wild animals and birds including forests
10- The children folk songs of other languages
  Dr N k Dhoundiyal and Dr Manorama Dhoundiyal took labour in explaining the situation and agae of children when these songs are either sung by child caregivers or children themselves.
     Scholars appreciated Dr Nand Kishor and Manorama for their initiatives to bring out the hidden heritage of Garhwal.

             Folk songs and other songs for children by Jane B R-Whitehead (1903) is important book for the scholars intention to preserve the heritage

             Men and Popular music in Algeria (1999) by Marc Schade-Poulsen refers many children folksongs of Algeria
                    Riddles, Folktales and proverbs from Cameroon (2010) by Comfort Ashu provides glimpse of children folk songs of Cameroon in the book.
                  The book-  Folk songs and folk life in Charlotteville (1972) provides information about children a couple of folk songs of Congo region.
                Books as ‘ Kids in ancient Egypt’ (by Wroble, 2004), Folksongs of many people (by Botsford, 1921), Popular Literature of Ancient Egypt( by Wiedermann, 1902), and many books throw light on Egyptian children folk songs
               The book African folksongs, children songs from Ghana (by Lodzekpo and Tieko, 1990) briefs about the children folksongs of Ghana.
           Folk Music of Ghana (by Niketia, 1963) provides knowledge of children folksongs of Ghana.               
               African Music: traditional and contemporary (by Agordoh, 2005) inform about children folksongs of Africa.
 The book – Folk Music of Kenya (by Senoga-Zek, 1986) provides details of children folksongs of Kenya.
               The book- Myths and Legends of Botswana, Lesotho and Swaziland (by Knappert , 1985) gives details of children folksongs of the region.

              C A Mullar (2004) wrote about South African children’s songs in his book South African Music

        Nicolas Slonimsky  discussed  about  Brazilian children’s folksongs and games in the book ‘Music of Latin America’
                     McGown and Pessanha (1998) provide knowledge about children’s folksongs of Brazil in the book ‘The Brazilian Sound: samba, bosaa…’.
  Castillo-Feliu (2000) provide the glimpses of children’s folk songs of Chile in the book ‘ Culture and Custom of Chile’.
            West (2008) briefed about children’s folksongs  of Costa Rica in book ‘Costa Rica’, A Guide to the latin Art Song ..’(Hoover et al0 also mentioned about children’s folksongs of Costa Rica.
            Orovio ( 2004) briefed about children’s folksongs of Cuba in the book Cuban Music Ato Z.
              Nickles (2002) provide knowledge of folksongs of El Salvador in his book ‘El Salvador: people and culture’.
                The books ‘Folk Songs of Jamaica’ (by, Tom Murry,1952) and ‘Jamaica’ (by S.S Angela Black,2004) provide reasonable knowledge of Jamaican Children’s folksongs.
       Faulkner (2005) provides references of children’s folk songs of Peru in the book ‘ What we hear in Music’.
              Press (1996) provides the essences of children’s folk songs of Puerto Rico in the book ‘Puerto Rican Americans’.
     The books  as ‘Suriname Folk-lore’  (1936), Language Transplanted the development of overseas Hindi ‘ give details of children folk songs of Suriname
                     Song games from Trinidad and Tobago by Elder (1965) and Music of Hindu Trinidad songs from the India diasporas (vol-1 by Myers, 1998) books give knowledge of  children’s folk songs of Trinidad and Tobago.
             ‘De Colores and Other Latin American folk songs for children (by Orozco, 1994) provide data of children’s folk songs of Uruguay too,
                The book  ‘Music of the Warao Venezuela : song people of rain forest’ (1996), throw light of Venezuelan children folk music

                    ‘Music in Latin America and the Caribbean in performing the Caribbean ‘ (by Kuss, 20070 provide knowledge about children’s folk music of Bermuda.
                                 Canadian Folk Music journal provides the knowledge of Canadian folk music regularly.
                     The book ‘ The Early Years of folk Music: fifty founders of Tradition’ (Dicaire, 2010) provide many examples of children’s folk music of Canada.   
            Encyclopedia of literature in Canada (2002)  also provide details of works on Canadian  children’s folksongs
               De Colores and other Latin American Folksongs for children (1999) by Elisa Kleven and Jose-Luis Orozco provides rhymes, chants, songs from variety of Latin American countries. 
                        American Folksongs for children (2002) by Ruth Crawford contains 90 popular children folk songs of America
               Intergenerational Children’s folk song (2001) by Nikki Wright explores ‘how children folk songs are passed from parents to children’. The writer also provides structure of song and then informs the reasons of children singing them. It is a classical book.
                 Children folk songs: playground songs by Deanne Willardson (2005) deals with songs passed on children to children in playground. The book also compares differences between male and female children folk songs.
                  Howard Wallach published very fine book on children music ‘Easy Folk songs for Kids’. The writer collected popular folk songs for kids. The important aspect of book is that there are music reading for each folk song.
                   Howard states that apart from ability of entertainment value, the folk songs connect children with other, past to present

             The book ‘Mexico and United States (by Stacy, 2002)’ throws light on Mexican children’s folk songs too.

             The world and its people: Spain  , Portugal  and Andorra (1969) provides glimpses on children’s folk songs of Andorra, Spain and Portugal. 
 ‘ The book ‘What we hear in Music..’ by Faulkner also deals with children’s folk songs in Austria,
               ‘Bulgarian Music’ by Krustev ( 1978) provides knowledge about children’s folksongs of Bulgaria.
                 J. Andreis provides knowledge of children’s folksongs of Croatia in his book ‘Music in Croatia (1974’.
                   Ebben 33 Czech Folksongs for pupil and teacher; score only’ by Peter Bachelor ( 2008) is fine book for  knowing  about children’s folksongs of Czech.
                  Jan Ling’s book History of European folk Music (1997), provides glimpses of Denmark’s fol songs for children
              There are many books available on folksongs for children in England as ‘ Folk Songs of middle Tennessee (1997), ‘Identity of England’ (2004), ‘Children’s books in children hand (1998), ‘One Hundred English folk songs for mid voice’ (1975) , ‘Folksongs in England’ (1967) and many more.
            Schhoolfield’s book ‘History of Finland’s Literature ‘ (1994) offers knowledge of children’s folksongs of Finland.
               French children’s folksongs (1972)  is fine book on French  children’s  folksongs
      The book Handbuch des Friesischen pro und Kontra ( 2001) by Munsake and Arhammar offers genral views of children’s folksongs of Frisian
                      Books like A history of European folk music, Children’s literature in Hitlar’s Germany offer knowledge of children’s folk songs of Germany.
                  Books as ‘Folk Poetry of Modern Greece’ (2004) , ‘The Greek folk songs’  (1988) provide knowledge about children’s folksongs of Greece,

Animals and Birds in Garhwali Children Folk Songs and Discussion on Importance of Music in Child Development

               The pundits of ancient India and Garhwal were well aware that the stories or descriptions about animals attract the children. That is the reasons that there are tens of stories in Mahabharata based on animals. Panchtantra a Sanskrit classic folk tales book is about the stories of animals. Vishnu Sharma the creator of Panchtantra wrote this animal based stories book to teach the prince of his kingdom.  The reason is that children and adults are having basic consciousness for nature and the animal based songs or storie s attract both children and adults very much.
 There are many of animal based folk songs for children in Garhwali language. The following animal based children folk song is a common folk song for children of Garhwal:

                                          The Importance of folk Music/Songs for Children         
           
                                 Human beings from the beginning of their existence were aware about the significant of music for child development.  That is the reason that there are children folk songs in every language and regions. Apart from available folk songs or songs for children, the child caregivers create their own songs to sooth the child.
  From the start of civilization, the human beings were aware that music benefits to child in the following areas:
1- Children folk Songs help in developing language skills for children
1b Scientists as Snow, Burns, Griffin (1998) Adams (1990) et all proved and suggested that the music improves phonological and phonemic awareness. The ancient communities were aware about the effects of music/folk songs on children’s development for phonological and photometric awareness.
2- Children folk songs are important for developing  self concept, self esteem and identity in the  child as suggested by Hargreaves, Miell and Macdonald in their research paper “ What are Musical identity and Why are they Important?’”
3- Psychologists found that (as the research paper of Gold,  Voracek and wigram , 2004,in their paper ‘Effects of Music Therapy for children and adolescents with psychology: with meta analysis, Journal of child psychology and psychiatry, 45:6) that music is helpful in clinical purpose for children too. It means the ancient people were aware due to their experiences that folk songs and folk music were essential for preventing abnormal behaviour of children.
4- The scientists as Zdzinsky (1998), Fairs et all (2000) Hara and Burke (1998) etc proved and suggested that the , family engaged in children songs/music help fast learning for children. The ancient people were well aware about the role of family and society members in providing music/songs to children for their fast learning.
5- The children music/songs help in mathematical skills in child. The ancient people including Garhwalis knew the capability of folk songs for developing logical skills of children.
6- The listening skill is important aspects of human behaviour. The scientists as Mayesky, smith, Hyslop, Tone, Newton, Swanson, Jalango, Goh and many more suggested that music enhances listening skills of children. The ancient societies across globe were aware the importance of music in developing listening skills of children and that is why all societies paid attention on children songs at all time.
7- The society of all civilizations were well versed about the role of music in improving creative skills of children, relieving stress, music goes along with movement of children etc. That is why all society have their own folk songs for children.
8- Music fulfills specific needs too. This is the reason that most in all communities, there are some exclusive folk songs for children which fulfill the specific needs of the community.
     Conclusively it can be said that due to attentive attentions, the ancient human beings were well aware about the importance of music/songs in child development and the culture of singing folk songs started for the matter of developing children with perfection in ancient society. The factors of importance of music in child development are now also proved by educationists, psychologists and sociologists.  Animals and natural objectives attract the attention of children and that is why there are children song based on animal characters in children folk songs of each communities old or modern.

                        Dr Sibbal Diagnosing Public Nerve

                      Dr Sibbal of ruling political party came to my building for diagnosing the public nerve.
          I asked, ‘How come!  Did you get time to visit out building?’
            Dr  Sibbal the profound expert of public mood in the ruling political party answered,” This Anna Hazare wave compelled me to find out public mood at grass root level. We want to deceive again Anna hazare as we did in past. This time we want to find out the reasons for cheating according  to public moos”
         Dr Sibbal checked up my hand nerve and shockingly said,” But there is no nerve favoring ruling political party!”
            I asked, “What is my nerve speaking?”.
            Dr Sibbal said,” Since, you are regualt watcher of television channel news, you are mesmerized by their anti government instances. The nerve is saying that we all political members are cheaters by birth”
  Before I could answer, Dr Sibbal the smart politician went to my wife and put his stethoscope on her hand.  The uttering sound came from speaker of stethoscope.” I know that you are expert of cheating people”.
  Dr Sibbal said, “Hush! Your wife is educated and all educated Indians always, opposing government”.
   Dr sibbal happily went to my mother and put his stethoscope on her nerve. Dr Sibbal was uttering,” I am sure uneducated and older generation would support ruling party”.
 However, the mother’s nerve was speaking as “For three twenty years you and your fellows have become expert of swindling us”
  Dr Sibbal went to my son hoping that young generation will support ruling political party. Surprisingly my son’s  heart  was addressing,” New generation is  following Anna’s cause”
  Dr Sibbal put his stethoscope on the nerve of maidservant. The nerve was telling, “ when you come for vote, you promise about low inflation but as soon as elections are over the cost of all goods speed up. You all are cheaters.
  Dr Sibbal frustratingly said,” Always, the urban people are influenced by media.  I should find out nerves of rural areas’
 I said,” Don’t worry! my villagers are there in next room”
 I took Dr Sibbal to my next room where my relatives from village were there for attending a marriage party in Mumbai.
 The nerve of all villagers of all age, caste, genders were speaking, “You politicians are cheating Indians.”
 Dr Sibbal the expert of knowing the public nerve said to me,” What should we do at government level?”
  I advised,’ you should be honest with public.”
 Dr Sibbal answered. “That is not possible. We politicians can’t be honest in any case, now. We will find newer methods of cheating Indians”

                     There are many folk songs for children in Garhwali language which illustrate animals and birds. The use of animals and birds are of two types -first animals as animals and animals as human beings as found in other language’s children poems.

                  Investigatiion of  A Garhwali Finger Folk Song and Finger Songs of Other languages

(Abstract: In this article, the author suggests the importance of translation of local folk songs into English to teach English. The author analyzes the finger children songs of Garhwali, Armenian, Mexican, Spanish, Afrikaans, Italian , Bhsahs Indonesian, languages  thoroughly)             
                  Finger  songs are the children songs that are created to accompany the finger movement with the rhyme content. With the finger play, the children enjoy music or tone of the song and simultaneously learn the hand- eye coordination.
                 Bhishma Kukreti stated in his article published in a Garhwali language daily ‘Garh-Aina’ providing the reference of Baldev Prasad Kukreti ‘Master jee ‘  that folk songs for children learning are essential in any community. Baldev Prasad Kukreti ‘ Master Jee’ discussed  the following matter with English teaching teacher Hari Ram Jakhmola of Silogi School, Silogi , Dhangu, Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand , India:
 1- Instead of British based rhymes, the UP education board should bring syllabus of Garhwali folk songs (translated in English) in English subject.
2- If the subject of Garhwal is there in English rhymes for students, the students will relate the subject immediately and will learn English faster than resent condition.
3- When the songs are British based, the rural students face two problems– learning of English and the problem of relating the subject which they never experienced in Garhwal.
4- The local folk songs translated in English solve many purposes- learning become faster, the children discuss the subject in daily life and can discuss with others than classrooms, the memorization is easy for local subject than foreign subjects. If the rhymes are of foreign subject, many students resist to learn the foreign subjects
          The psychologists also proved that local subject in class room rhymes are more advantageous than subject of foreign origins.
 Though, finger play songs are of various subjects of life, this author is limiting him here, for the poems related to palm, fingers and thumb.

               In Garhwali there is no practice of using ‘that’ or ‘inverted coma’ after says/tells/speaks types of words  as is in English or ‘ki’ is in Hindi. Sometimes ‘bal’ is used for ‘That’ in Garhwali language
  The song is in fact, satirical in a sense that the poem suggests after borrowing, returning the debt is essential.

  In Indian philosophy, when fear is transformed into strength the philosophy is called Bhairav Tantra , In this poem the principle of ‘Bhairav Tantra ‘ is applied.

 The above few children poems suggest that there is tradition in all communities to make children knowledgeable about palm and fingers through rhymes.

3- The children learn by finger play songs about coordination of various body parts while speaking  (Coordination between verbal language and body language)
 4- The finger play and action encourage children to participate verbally
5- The children know the aspects of direction and activities of body parts too

                          Yu Kaiko : A Garhwali finger Play Children Traditional Song
           The following Garhwali finger play song is very common finger play of the region. The purpose of the song is to provide knowledge of pronouns to the children. Since, the schools do not teach Garhwali language in Garhwal or anywhere in the world. The Garhwalis have been using this type of children folk songs for providing knowledge of pronouns and other grammatical aspects to childe, The children use finger for indicating words as this, that, I, you , he etc . The children sing the song while grazing domestic animals in the grassland.
