शलजम के  जन्मस्थली के बारे में वैज्ञानिकों में सहमती नही है।  किन्तु इस बात पर सहमती अवश्य है कि शलजम का जन्मस्थान मेडिटेरीयन भूभाग से  पकिस्तान तक हो सकता है और 2000 BC से पहले शलजम का जन्म हो चुका था । वैज्ञानिक साबेरिया को भी शलजम का जन्मस्थान मानते है। सिकन्दर साहित्य (300 BC  )में शलजम का उल्लेख मिलता है। संस्कृत में इसे शिखामूल कहते हैं।
ऐसा लगता है   की शलगम  का उपयोग भारत में 1500 BC में  हो चुका था। इस समय भारत में शलजम का उपयोग तिलहन के लिए होता था।
उत्तराखंड में भी शलजम सिकन्दर युग से पहले उगाया  जाता होगा. शायद पंजाब क्षेत्र से शलजम का ज्ञान उत्तराखंड के मैदानी निवासियों को हुआ होगा।
पहाड़ों में शलजम नही उगाया जाता  है या बहुत कम ही उगाया जाता है . हो सकता है कि बड़े मूला के विकास के बाद शलजम की अहमियत पहाड़ों में कम हो गयी होगी।  या यह भी हो सकता है कि शलजम की आयु कम होने से शलजम की खेती नही की गयी होगी।   मैदानी , भाभर व तराई क्षेत्र में  शलजम की  बड़ी मात्रा में खेती होती है।

स्वतंत्रता से पहले रामबांस उत्तराखंड  बड़ा आर्थिक महत्व की वनस्पति थी।  रामबांस से बाड़ तो लगाई जाती थी साथ में रामबांस से रेशे मिलते थे , रामबांस से कपड़े धोये जाते थे , रामबांस कई दवाइयों में  आता था।
रामबांस के कोमल कोपलों के भाजी भी खायी जाती थी।
रामबांस बहुत पुरानी वनस्पति।
 रामबांस  मूलस्थान मैक्सिको , दक्सिण  अमेरिका। है।
स्पेनी  अन्वेषक रामबांस को यूरोप लाये।
कृषि इतिहासकार मानते हैं कि पुर्तगा द्वारा रामबांस का प्रवेश भारत में पन्द्रहवीं या सोलहवीं सदी में हुआ।
1790 इ में रामबास या  सहोदर मद्रास में बोया जाता था जिसका उपयोग रेशों के लिए होता था। विलियम वेब ने 1798 रामबांस या इसके सहोदर के रेशों से बनी रस्सी सेंत जॉर्ज फोर्ट के मिलट्री था। 1839 तक रामबांस (बांस केओरा ) बंगाल में रेशों के लिए उपयोग होने लगा था और सेना के लोग भी रामबांस या सहोदर के रेशों की रस्सियाँ उपयोग में लाते थे।
कटक का  रेजिडेंट अधिकारी मुरी ने उड़ीसा में पता लगाया कि रामबांस (Agave americana) से रेशे बन सकते हैं।  मुरी रेशे दिखाने अपने हेड ऑफिस कोलकता लाया
1841 इ में अलीपुर जेल में रामबांस या इसके सहोदर के रेशों से रस्सियाँ बनतीं थीं इसी समय बुलंदशहर में भी रामबांस या इसका सहोदर उगाया गया। 
सन 1890 तक भारत में रामबांस रेशेयुक्त वस्तुओं को बनाने हेतु एक मुख्य कच्चा माल बन चुका था।
उत्तराखंड में रामबांस ने  अठारवीं सदी में प्रवेश किया होगा। किन्तु प्रवेश के साथ ही रामबांस  प्रचार प्रसार तीब्र गति से हुआ होगा

संस्कृत -चांदा , चोरका , ग्रंथिपर्ण ,क्षेमका , तस्कारा
हिंदी -चोरा , चोरु
गढ़वाली -कुमाउंनी नाम - चोरु /गन्धरायण
चोरु 2500 -3700  मीटर की उंचाई पर पाई जाती हैं। 
चोरु का मुख्य उपयोग दवाओं में होता है।  चोरु की जड़ों के पेस्ट से पेट खासकर कब्ज की बीमारियों के उपचार आदि के लिए उपयोग होता है (भगवती उनियाल,विनोद भट्ट ,वंदना शिव ) तथा जुकाम आदि ठीक करने के लिए भी होता है (राजिव कुमार वशिष्ठ आदि ) ।
चोरु के जड़ों से सब्जी का उपयोग भी होता था और जड़ों के  सुगन्धित पदार्थ को भोजन में डालने से भोजन को सुंगंधित बनाया जाता है /था
राजिव कुमार वशिष्ठ  आदि के अनुसार Angelica  archangekica का नेटिव /जन्मस्थान ऑस्ट्रिया , जर्मनी , रूस , हंगरी , डेनमार्क का क्षेत्र है। कुछ वैज्ञानिक जैसे डा सक्सेना सीरिया को Angelica archangekica का जन्म स्थान मानते है। 

Angelica glauca का जन्मस्थान हिमालय ही है।


Angelica glauca/Angelica archangekica प्रजातियाँ विनाश होती प्रजातियों में मानी जा रही हैं।

संस्कृत नाम  - उर्घ्वकंटिका
हिंदी नाम एवं आयुर्वैदिक नाम - महशतावरी
स्थानीय नाम -   करूरा
महशतावरी एक पौधा है जिसकी  टेनड्रिल 50 -70 सेंटीमीटर तक पाये जाते  है ।
 चरक संहिता , सुश्रवा संहिता, अष्टांग संग्रह , कश्यप संहिता आदि में शतावरी व महशतावरी का उल्लेख है।
Asparagus filicinus का जन्मस्थल भारतीय हिमालय एवं दक्षिण पश्चिम चीन माना जाता है।  अत;महशतावरी का उपयोग उत्तराखंड में सदियों से होता आ रहा है।
मेहता , नेगी और ओझा (2010 ) लिखते हैं कि Asparagus filicinusसब्जी के रूप में भी उत्तराखंड  में उपयोग होता है
Chemical Constituents of Asparagus लेख में जगत सिंह नेगी , जोशी , रावत और बिष्ट अन्वेषकों (2010 ) ने Asparagus के विभिन्न प्रजातियों के उपयोग बताये हैं.
इनमे से Asparagus की एक प्रजाति से माताओं में दूध बढ़ाने  के लिए उपयोग होता है।
Asparagus के बीज अथवा जड़ से कई औषधिया बनती है जो स्त्रियों के बांझपन दूर करने , माहवारी की बीमारियां , रतौंधी , डिसेंट्री , किडनी दर्द , डाइबिटीज , लीवर की बीमारियों में  औषधि रूप में उपयोग होता है।
शुक्राणु  वृद्धि याने मर्दानगी बढ़ाने के लिए भी महशतावरी का उपयोग होता था .
Asparagus filicinus की जड़ें टॉनिक , पुत्र प्राप्ति , हैजा , पथरी आदि में उपयोग होता है व कीड़े  मारने के  प्रोयोग किया जाता है।

संस्कृत नाम - कचनार
सामन्य हिंदी नाम - कचनार
गढ़वाली -कुमाऊंनी नाम -ग्वीराळ , क्वैराळ
25  ऊंचा पेड़ जिससे फूल वसंत में आते हैं ।
Bauhinia जीनस की दुनिया भर में 600 species पायी जाती हैं ।

Bauhinia variegata प्रजाति का जनस्थान पूर्वी भारत व  चीन है और सम्भवत: हिमालय जन्मस्थल  है।
उत्तराखंड में कचनार, ग्वीराळ , क्वैराळ का उपयोग शायद 3000 साल पहले से होता रहा है।
उत्तराखंड में फूलों के महीने में कचनार के फूल देहरियों में सुबह सुबह डाले जाते हैं। 
कचनार के पत्तों को पशुओं के लिए चारे के रूप में भी उपयोग होता है। 
चरक  संहिता व सुश्रुवा संहिता में कचनार के आयुर्वैदिक उपयोगों का उल्लेख है। 
आयुर्वेद में कचनार, ग्वीराळ , क्वैराळ का औसधि उपयोग खांसी -जुकाम -सांस की बीमारियों , कोढ़ , बबासीर , जुलाब ,अल्सर जैसी बीमारियों में होता है।
ऊत्तराखण्ड में कचनार, ग्वीराळ , क्वैराळ का उपयोग इसकी कलियों से सब्जी बनाने में होता है।
ऊत्तराखण्ड में कचनार, ग्वीराळ , क्वैराळ का उपयोग घर बनाने कि लकड़ियों के लिए भी होता है।

              सामग्री

कलियाँ -200 ग्राम ,डंठल  बिहीन कलियाँ
मसाले -
कटी हरी मिर्च
 एक इंच अदरक के कटे टुकड़े और दो लहसुन कटे हुए
हींग -थोड़ी सी
जीरा -आधा चमच
हल्दी पाउडर -चौथाई छोटी चमच
धनिया पाउडर -दो छोटी चमच
ग्राम  मसाला - चौथाई चमच से भी कम
लाल मिर्च पाउडर - चौथाई छोटी चमच
कडुवा तेल -एक या दो चमच
कटा हरा  धनिया
नमक -स्वादानुसार

                  कचनार, ग्वीराळ , क्वैराळ की  कलियों की सब्जी बनाने    विधि
पहले कलियों को दो तीन बार ठंडे पानी में  धो लें।
फिर कलियों को पानी में 3 से पांच मिनट तक उबालें और फिर पानी  छानकर कलियों को अलग एक तस्तरी में रख लें
गरम कढ़ाई में तेल गरम करें फिर जीरा , अदरक , लहसुन भूनें , फिर हरी मिर्च भूनें फिर मसाले, नमक  डालें थोड़ा सा भूनें और थोड़ा सा दो चमच पानी डालें।  जब तेल ऊपर आने लगे तो उबाली कचनार की कलियों को डालें व 4 -5 मिनट तक करछी चलाते पकाएं।  कटा हुआ हरा धनिया दाल दें फिर कढ़ाई उतारकर 5 -6 तक ढके रखें
कचनार कि कलियों की सब्जी  रोटी , पूरी में खाईये।
