Uttarakhand government to focus on Kotdwar's growth

The Uttarakhand government has decided to remove irritants impeding the development of a growth centre at the Kotdwar area of Pauri district, Uttarakhand, which is fast emerging as a hub for SME units.
 

Nearly 35 industries have been allotted plots at the Sigaddi growth centre, which has so far attracted an investment of Rs 115.88 crore. The State Industrial and Infrastructure Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Limited (SIDCUL), a state government enterprise, is developing the growth centre.

So far, the SIDCUL has allotted 32 acres of land and the remaining 28 acres would soon be allotted. For this purpose, the government has formulated a new policy.

Poor road connectivity and frequent power breakdowns are the bane of the Kotdwar growth centre. The government has now set up a 33 KV sub-station for supplying power to the industries and is constructing roads and bridge, officials said. For setting up the growth centre, the government acquired 60 acres of land from farmers and provided 30 acres from its own kitty.

The total project cost has been estimated at Rs 27 crore. The government is roping in non-polluting units from thrust sectors like electronics, pharmaceuticals, textiles and computers.

In addition to this, BEL, a prestigious central government public sector company, would also be urged to set up its ancillaries in the growth centre.

The 90-acres area is spreading in four villages namely Kishandevpur, Jaidevpur, Lokmanipur and Shrirampur where nearly 150 families will get benefits like employment opportunities at the centre
 

 
 
Uttaranchal Gramin Bank is to open three branches exclusively for women in the hill state of Uttarakhand. The first such branch, managed only by women, has already started functioning at Dehradun's Indira Nagar locality.
 

Only women are allowed to open their accounts in the branch. This is the 121st branch of the bank. Three more such branches are proposed in Pauri and Pithoragarh districts.

With help from NABARD, a special women centre has also been opened at the head office of the bank here. The main thrust of the women branch would be to attract Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and Non-Government Organisations (NGOs), which are mostly represented by women.

"By opening women branches, we want to salute the women of the hill state who are known as ‘matrishakti' (mothers' power) in Uttarakhand," said Chairman of the Uttaranchal Gramin Bank Threesh Kapoor.

Uttaranchal Gramin Bank was formed following the merger of Alaknanda Bank, Ganga-Yamuna Bank and Pithoragarh bank in 2006. The bank earned a profit of Rs 8.83 crore before tax this year. It has registered a jump of 233 per cent as compared to the last year.

The phenomenal rise in the profit is mainly due to the merger of three banks. The bank has also set up an art gallery at its head office here to promote local artists from the state.
