हिममण्डित शिखरों की गोद में बसी विश्व प्रसिद्ध फूलों की घाटी से भला कौन अपरिचित है। बात सन् १९३१ की है, गढ़वाल स्थित कामेट शिखर (२५,४४७ फीट) पर आरोहण करने वाले दल में प्रसिद्ध ब्रिटिश पर्वतारोही फ्रैंक स्मिथ थे जो सफल आरोहण के बाद धौली गंगा के निकट गमशाली गांव से रास्ता भटक जाने के बाद पश्चिम की ओर बढ़ते-बढ़ते १६७०० फीट ऊंचा दर्रा पार करते भ्यूंडार घाटी पहुंचे।

वहां से कुछ आगे बढ़ने पर सहसा अकल्पनीय खुशी से उछल पड़े, क्योंकि वे एक स्वर्गिक खूबसूरत घाटी में पांव रख चुके थे जहां राशि-राशि प्राकृतिक फूलों का सैलाब लहलहा रहा था। वे भावविभॊर और मंत्रमुग्ध होकर फूलों से मिले सौंदर्य को देखकर ठगे से रह गए। और अपना तम्बू वहीं तान दिया।

सन् १९३७ में वे दुबारा इस घाटी में पहुंचे। गहन शोध कर उन्होंने लगभग ३०० किस्म की फूल की प्रजातियों को ढूंढ निकाला। वहां से लौटकर उन्होंने Valley of flowers पुस्तक लिखी जिससे फूलों की यह घाटी विश्व प्रसिद्ध हो गई।

           

८ ७.५ वर्ग किलोमीटर क्षेत्रफल में फैली यह घाटी नम्बर-दिसम्बर से अप्रैल-मई तक बर्फ से ढकी रहती है। जून में बर्फ पिघलने के साथ ही हरियाली शुरू हो जाती है। जुलाई से घाटी में फूलों से महकनी शुरू हो जाती है। अगस्त में घाटी में फूलों का यौवन सर्वाधिक दर्शनीय और आकर्षक हो जाता है। अक्टूबर में फूल धीरे-धीरे कुम्हला जाते हैं।

फूलों की घाटी में ब्रह्मकमल, एकोनिटस एट्राक्स, रोडोड्रेडोन (बुरांस), पौपी, रोजी, र्जीनिया, लिगुजेरिया, सेक्सीफेगा, ससूरिया ओवेलाटा, हेटरीफिल्लम, भूतकोशी, पेस्टोरिस, थाइमस लाइनियेरिस, एंजिलिका ग्लूका, जैसियाना कुरा, ओनेस्मा, इमोडी, रियम इमोडी, रियम यूरक्रोफिटटोनम, नाडरेल्टैकिस ग्रेंडिफोरम, पोलिगेनिटिम र्टिसिलेटम आदि समेत कई प्रजातियों के फूल पाए जाते हैं। यहां पहुंचने के लिए ऋषिकेश से गोविन्द घाट जो कि समुद्र तल से १८२९ मीटर की ऊंचाई पर है बस की सुविधा है।

गॊविंद घाट से फूलों की घाटी तक १७ किमी का सफर पैदल ही तय करना पड़ता है। मजे की बात यह है कि फूलों की घाट के पास दो और बड़े तीर्थ ब्रदीनाथ धाम और हेमकुण्ड धाम हैं जहां हर साल हजारों श्रद्धालु आते हैं।

                                                               Variety   of flowering in Valley of Flowers.  Earlier, there used to grow more   than  500 spicies of wild flowers in the valley, which are  said to be   preserved in the Botonical Garden of London.  Now, due to human   influence  and  other envirionmental pressure, growth of wild grass,   etc., around 200 species have disappeared. Presently,  about  250-300   species of flowrers are still struggling for survival  with the changed   geographical conditions  in the valley,and many of them are also on the   verge of disppearance. In 1988, the Valley of Floowers & Nanda Devi   National Parks were declared as World Heritage Sites by the UNESCO. (Dinesh Pundhir Photo)

                                                               Braham   Kamal.  This flower originally grows at an height of around 4000  MSL   and above.  This flower is offered to Lord Shiva in the Garhwal area,   especiall, Kedarnath, Tunganath, Rudranath, where  it is easily   available.

                                                               Flowering   in Valley of Flowers.  Though, the valley of flowers was declared a   National Park in 1982.  This was the point from where the downfall of   the Valley has actually started.  A lot is required to be done for the   preservation of rare species of flowers, rare and endangered animals.    This valley be taken from the Forest Deptt. and handed over to some NGO   for its betterment. In 1988, it was declared as World Heritage Site by   the UNESCO.
