गौर जी ने सही कहा, लेकिन इसमें जिम्मेदारी हमारी है, हम अपने बच्चों को पहाड़ी माहौल दें तो जरुर वे इसके प्रति आकर्षित होते हैं। इसका उदाहरण मेरी १ साल की बच्ची है, उसने जब से आंख खोली उसने अपने घर में उत्तराखण्डी संगीत सुना है और पहाड़ी भाषा को भी सुना है......आज वह चाव से पहाड़ी गाने सुनती है, जब उसे अकेले कमरे में रखना पड़े तो हम प्लेयर पर पहाड़ी गाना लगाकर छोड़ देते हैं, वह ताली बजा-बजाकर आराम से अकेले भी रह जाती है।
      कोशिश हमें करनी होगी, हमें खुद पहाड़ी बोलने से हिचक नहीं होनी चाहिये और अपने बच्चों को भी पहाड़ी सिखानी चाहिये। आज के दौर में अंग्रेजी और हिन्दी जरुरी है, लेकिन किसी भी पेड़ को अपनी जड़ नहीं छोड़नी चाहिये......अगर जड़ छोड़ दी तो पेड़ तो सूख ही जायेगा ना।

इंटर पास करने के बाद पहली बार 13 जुलाई को सुबह नौ बजे की बस से मैं पहाड़ से निकला था। जीएमओयू की बस मैं नेगी जी का ‘ना दौड़ ना दौड़ उंधरयूं का बाटा’ गीत बज रहा था, यह गीत मुझे  रुला रहा था गीत मेरी पहाड़ से विदाई की पृष्ठभूमि में बज रहा था मेरी आंख नम हो रही थी. गांव छूटा, पहाड़ छूटा, देवदार की हवा और बांझ की जड़ों का ठंडा पानी गटकने की आदत भी छूटी। मैदान में आकर शर्मा, सिंह बनकर अपनी पहचान भी मिटा चुके हैं। शुरू -शुरू के वर्षा में हर छोटी मोटी चीज छूटने का दर्द सालता रहा। यहां तक की पड़ोस के गांव के बौड़ा, का और काकी की भी याद आती रही। जो मेरे नाम के साथ मेरे पूरे परिवार का इतिहास और जमीन जायदाद- गौड़ी भैंसी के बारे में भी जानकारी रखते थे। गांव के नौनिहाल जो कई बार नंग- धडंग होकर एक साथ हाथ पकड़ खेलते रहते भी बरबश यादों में आते। गोकि वह मेरी उम्र से काफी छोटे थे। मैं उनमें खुद के बचपन को झांकने की कोशिश करता।  तिबारी में दबे पांव आने वाली ‘बिरली’ याद आती, याद आता किस तरह गांव का एक मात्र पालतू कुत्ता वक्त बेवक्त भौंकता रहता। सौंण,भादौं , के महीने की घनधोर बरसात में ‘पटाल’ से लगातार गिरती धार सालों तक कानों में बजती रही। यादों का अंधड़ कई बार परदेश के दर्द को और बढ़ा जाता। मगर दिमाग में यादों को ठुंसे रखने की एक सीमा है, फिर नए सपनों के लिए भी तो दिमाग में ‘स्पेश’ रखनी है। आखिर इन सपनों को पूरा करने के लिए ही तो पहाड़ से भाग कर आए हैं। जल्द से जल्द सैलरी बढ़ानी है, फिर यहीं कहीं दिल्ली, फरीदाबाद हद से हद देहरादून की पढ़ी लिखि लड़की को ‘ब्यौंली’ बनाने का सपना सच करना है।

जिंदगी अतीतजीवी होकर आगे नहीं बढ़ती, पहाड़ देखने में या यूं कहें सपने में तो अच्छे लगते हैं, पर इन्हे झेलना सचमुच कठिन है। बैकग्राउंड मजबूत नहीं हो पाने के कारण मैं तो बहुत कुछ नहीं कर पाया, लेकिन बच्चों को वह सबकुछ देना है जो मुझे नहीं मिला। हां उम्र की आखिरी ढलान पर सारी जिम्मेदारी निभाकर अपने गांव में फिर बस जाउंगा। तब न मुझे कमाने की चिंता होगी, न भविष्य की। बस किसी तरह जिस जगह जन्म लिया वहीं पर खाक भी हो जाऊं।
अब उम्र उस मुकाम पर भी पहुंच गई है। जो सपने देखे थे वो आधे अधूरे ढंग से पूरे भी हो गए हैं। पहाड़ आज भी यादों में सताता है, सच मानो तो दर्द अब कुछ ज्यादा ही बढ़ गया है। पर, फिर कहीं कुछ बदल गया है। नयार, हेंवल और रवासन, भागीरथी, गंगाजी में अब तक कितना ही पानी बह चुका है। एक तो शरीर कमजोर हुआ है- ब्लडप्रेशर, डायबटीज जैसी शहरी बीमारियां शरीर में घर कर गई हैं। पहाड़ की उतार चढ़ाव से घुटने में भी दर्द उभर आता है। मैं तो फिर भी यह सह लूं, पर ‘मिसेज’ का क्या करुं। वह तो सड़ी गरमी में भी ‘फ्लैट’ छोड़ने को तैयार नहीं। उसके पास कई तर्क हैं,  बीमारी, मौसम और सबसे बड़ा घर खाली छोड़ने पर चोरी का। बंद घरों में चोरी की खबर वह कुछ ज्यादा ही जोर से पढ़ती है। कई बार मैं भी खुद को उसके तर्क से सहमत पाता हूं, जब वह कहती है कि पहाड़ में शौचालय तक का इंतजाम नहीं है। वहां ताजा बाजारू सब्जी और फल के लिए भी कोटद्वार, ऋषिकेश जाने वाले टैक्सी वाले की चिरौरी करनी पड़ती है। और फिर तबियत अचानक बिगड़ने पर अच्छे डॉक्टर कहां हैं, ‘धार -खाल’ के सरकारी डॉक्टर के भरोसे भला गांव में रहने का रिस्क लें। वह खुद के बजाय मुझे मेरी तबीयत का हवाला देकर रोक लेती है।कई बार सोचता हूं कि गांव में कम से कम दो कमरे और एक शौचलय का पक्का मकान बना दूं।  कोई नहीं भी आए तो मैं खुद ही जाकर महीने दो महीने बिता आऊं। भतीजे की ‘ब्वारी’ दो रोटियां तो दे ही देगी, हमारी फुंगड़ी भी तो वही लोग खा रहे हैं। पर डरता हूं कि मैं तो बीमारियों का भोजन हूं, साल दो साल ही और इस धरती का वासिंदा हूं। मेरे पीछे गांव के मकान की क्या उपयोगिता, मेरे बाद बच्चे मुझे कोसेंगे ही। इस कशमकश में दिन तेजी से बीत रहे हैं, और मेरी बैचेनी भी।मैं अब भी दुविधा में झूल रहा हूं। यहां में ‘अजनबी’ हूं तो वहां पर ‘अनफिट’। मुझे पहाड़ में दिल्ली की ऐश चाहिए, पर यह संभव नहीं। आखिर वह पहाड़ है, दिल्ली नहीं। बस अब कभी कभी डीवीडी पर गढ़वाली गाने बजा कर खुद को तृप्त कर लेता हूं। घर में गढ़वाली बोली पर नियंत्रण रखने वाला मैं अकेला व्यक्ति हूं, बाकि सब ‘कटमाली’ हैं। गढ़वाली गाने सुनते वक्त मैं एक भाषायी अल्पसंख्यक की तरह भय महसूस करता हूं। इंटर पास करने के बाद पहली बार 13 जुलाई को सुबह नौ बजे की बस से मैं पहाड़ से निकला था। जीएमओयू की बस मैं नेगी जी का ‘ना दौड़ ना दौड़ उंधरयूं का बाटा’ गीत बज रहा था, यह गीत मुझे  रुला रहा था पर वापस आने का संकल्प भी मेरा युवा मन बंाध रहा था। मै पक्का कर चुका था कि एक दिन फिर इन हरे भरे जंगलों कोहरे से लिपटे पहाड़ों में फुरसत के दिन बिताऊंगा। मैं दृढ़संकल्प था कि फिर से काफल, आम, जामुन के पेड़ों पर चढ़कर रसीले फलों का जमा लूंगा। आज 45 बरस बाद मेरा यह संकल्प बस सपना बन कर रहा गया। ना दौड़ ना दौड मैं अब भी सुनता हूं। यह गीत अब मुझे धिक्कारता है।

Dear Arvindda,
 
With all due regards to your knowledge, but I beg to differ to you on this account:
 
a) The "dialect" becomes a language when more and more people converse in that. You can refer to many of Chinese provinces which either use mandarin/ chinese etc as basic dialect. The same applies to many places in Germany and France.
 
The point here is that we must learn & converse in our mother tongue even if it is a dialect and should not be ashamed of that.
 
b) Yes, in case we are addressing to the gathering then the common mode of language to be taken care of or it would definitely lead to "strange" faces as you have rightly conveyed.

Next time when you meet all of these uttrakhandis ,make a choice,how would you like to speak.
 
I attempted speaking Kumaoni once in a local uttrakhandi function ,and immediately I realised a strange look on the face of some of my Garhwali friends and I discontinued midway and started in Hindi to everybody's comfort.
 
Maharaj, it is as good as arguing as to why are we  posting our mails in English, why
not in hindi ,our mother tongue ?
 
Same logic, convenience , not complexes.

Dear Chandan,
People in mumbai and Delhi i have seen they are not ready to say that they are gadawali.
I meet a person in mumbai and he was looking like gadawali ask him from where is and what cast he is he said panjabi and started saying same word in Punjabi.  And he asked me what cast iam i don't have gadawali look and i always where Western.  I said am gadwali so he was surprised to no that and he said iam also .
So i asked him then why he said he is Punjabi
He said people can not understand so
I said no u should make then understand
Iam Bron and brought in Mumbai and staying in USA but we all  and can speak gadawali and proued
that iam gadawali.
My  maaji and pittaji always use to say if we can learn other languages then why not our languages.

We Uttrakhandies seem to be suffering from some kind of  inferiority complex as a result we hesitate speaking our language in public.  This is not the case with the other communities. In fact we take pride in speaking Hindi in front of our relatives especially those who have come from the villages to indicate superiority. Similarly we don't want to be identified as Uttrakhandies in public, perhaps due to the fact that our earlier generation took up the menial jobs when they migrated from the hills.  I don't understand this mindset.  We should be proud of that generation of Uttrakhandis because only due of their hard work and honesty the present generation could  stand on its feet. Be proud of being Uttrakhandi not arrogant. As regard our children's failure to speak our language, no one else but ourself is to  blame. How do you expect your children to speak their native language when you yourselves don speak it.  We better give it a thought.  We are attempting to address the symptom not the cause. I believe its never late. A sincere begining can be made at the right earnest.

Now I would like to continue in English because there a number of people who doesn't understand garhwali.
Yes, it's correct that people from Uttarakhand generally don't prefer to speak in Uttarakhandi language. I have heard a lots of excuses for this shameful behavior towards our local language. A portion of your uttarkhandi population prefer to reply... "I can understand but can't speak" and few other prefer to reply with words like... "I was born or living far from Uttarakhand so don't know uttarakhandi local language" and rest people feel shy speaking in garhwali/Kumaoni.
 
But as far as my thinking is concerned, I don't agree with these baseless excuses. There are a number of guys including myself who are born or living far from Uttarakhand but they still speak in their Uttarakhandi local language. As an example... I was just 4 when my father got transferred to Ambala in Haryana along with the family, but all my family members speak in garhwali that too fluently.
 
There is a say... "HOME is the first school for children" and whatever parents speak we learn that particular language....  As per my experience.. . most of the Uttarakhandi  parents (Please don't get hurt, but IT'S THE FACT TODAY) don't prefer to maintain/speak their language (Garhwali/Kumaoni) at home, instead they prefer to speak in Hindi or english, hence today's generation do not value their Uttarakhandi language. As per me this is the root cause of the isssue we discussing here.
 
Solutions to this problem can be:
 
1. All Parents should start speaking their own language at home and healthy efforts should be applied to maintain our own language speaking environment. By doing this atleast our next generation will be fully in touch with our language and culture.
2. All others who generally prefer to make excuses should develop their confidence towards garhwali. Their is no age limit to learn a language so please start speaking in your Uttarakhandi language, Don't worry if you are unable to speak it correctly... but remember your continous efforts can improve your confidence towards your own Uttarakhandi language. Start speaking in Garhwali/Kumaoni, watch Garhwali/Kumaoni movies or listen the Uttarakhandi songs, etc.
3. ONE SHOULD NOT LAUGH WHEN SOMEBODY IS NOT SPEAKING THEIR LANGUAGE CORRECTLY, IT HURTS HIS/HER CONFIDENCE AND IN FUTURE THAT PERSON CAN AVOID SPEAKING IN UTTARAKHANDI LANGAUGE, INSTEAD WE CAN CORRECT HIS/HER MISTAKE TO IMPROVE HIS/HER CONFIDENCE LEVEL.
 
Please forgive me if somebody is hurt with my words/views. .. but this is the fact today.

Dear Gautam,
 
Dialect is a verbal gesture sans a written script.
While language is a verbal gesture with its own written script.
 
Kumaoni ,Garhwali, Jaunsari are all uttrakhandi dialects with script in Hindi(Pali).
 
I dont know how this Uttrakhandi language thing started .
 
We all are Uttrakhandis speaking either Kum , or garh,or jaun,or punjabi with written text in Hindi.
 
Please disagree with me.

As you are aware India is a multi culture and multi language country. However, we have “Unity in Diversity”. Generally, it is seen whenever any Punjabi, Gujrati, Benali, South Indian meet their people they prefer to speak in their own languages but when it is point of Uttarakhandi, this is somewhat not seen amongst us.

 
 

Most importantly, in many cities Uttarakhandi culture programmes are held. The programme goes on in our languages (like songs, plays etc) but Anchor and the Chief Guest always speak in Hindi or English. The same is the situation, of our Political Leaders also. They go for canvassing in hill areas and other places but their speeches are in Hindi only.  (I am not discouraging of speaking our national language Hindi but we must also teach our new generation our regional language also so that they can take interest towards their culture also).

 

After all, why do we Uttarakhandi Hesitate in Speaking our own languages. May be the inferior complexity ? (Why ? -  We are none to second in any field).

PS : Do you encourage / speak with our kids in Uttarakhandi language at home other than English & Hindi ?

There is a saying 'Charity begins from Home".

We must take this step from our house first. we should teach our children our language so that they can take interest in learning the language.
