Mother of martyr Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari is disappointed with netas using the names of martyrs for selfish motivesAs Adarsh Cooperative Housing Society comes to stand for greed, malpractice and favouritism committed at various public offices, the voices of the people the society was originally meant for Kargil war veterans and widows have somehow remained excluded.
MiD DAY, in a 10-part series, gives you the story of the ultimate sacrifice the Kargil martyrs made, little imagining that it would be so abused by babus and politicos for a plot of land in their name.
Karan Nath played the role of Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari in the film, LOC KargilSpeaking with their families, MiD DAY finds out what they have to say about Adarsh Society, a cruel misnomer that has mocked the purpose and the people it was supposed to serve.
Born in a lower middle class family of Tallital in Nainital, Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari got commissioned in the Indian Army in 1993 and joined the 18 Grenadiers.
Major Rajesh was awarded the second highest gallantry award Maha Vir Chakra for his supreme valour and service to the nation.
"He was very jolly and most of the time he would play with his friends. He used to participate in all cultural events in school, singing Pahari songs, but used to surprise us with his annual exam results.
He was always the topper," recalls Malti Adhikari, mother of Major Rajesh. "I am proud of my son attaining martyrdom and giving the supreme sacrifice for his nation."
Malti said that she once told him not to join the defence services to which he had promptly replied, "It is you who are asking me not to join the force." She just smiled at him and asked him to carry on.
"He always tried to make others happy and it was his personality that made him popular in Nainital, whether it was school or his boarding," said Malti.
"It was his decision to join the army and he made it possible with his hard work. There was something in his heart for the motherland that inspired him to join the forces."
Malti said that though she never got time from tending to the cattle, Major Rajesh always found time to do something for others.
On Adarsh
I felt very embarrassed when I came to know about the scam. Who am I to decide? God will decide the punishment for them.
The people involved in the scam have not only spoilt the name of the nation but also made it bankrupt. How could they use the name of martyrs for their selfish motives?
On MartyrdomOn May 30, 1999, as a part of battalion operations to capture Tololing Peak, Major Rajesh Singh Adhikari was tasked to secure the initial foothold. The post was located in a treacherous, mountainous terrain at about 15,000 feet and covered with snow.
He was fired at from two mutually supporting bunkers while he was leading the team. The officer immediately directed the rocket launcher detachment to engage the bunker and without waiting, rushed into the bunker and killed two intruders in close-quarter combat.
Despite suffering grievous bullet injuries, Major Rajesh continued to direct his sub-unit. Refusing to be evacuated, the officer charged at the second bunker and killed one more occupant, leading to the capture of the second bunker at Tololing, before succumbing to his injuries.
