Sunpat: an Ironic and Witty Short Garhwali Drama

(Review of Very short Garhwali Drama ‘Sunpat’ (2002) written by Playwright Kula Nand Ghansala)

                                                                Bhishma Kukreti
Dr. Narendra Gauniyal, Bhishma Kukreti, and Om Prakash Semwal wrote short dramas that are useful as fillers in a cultural program or any other functions. However, Kula Nand Ghansala and Om Prakash Semwal dramas wrote and staged more short dramas in Garhwali than all.
‘Sunpat’ is a very entertaining short drama s filler. An old man (bada) is semi deaf and the postman brings money orders for him. Postman asks the old man a question but the old man answers differently and each answer of the old man has two meanings. Both the meanings are humorous and ironic. The answers create satire and laughter together. The questions and comments of the postman also create laughter.
The drama is very entertaining and definitely humorous.

Complaint: A Garhwali Drama Portraying Rotting, Worsening Education System in Rural Garhwal

(Review of Garhwali drama ‘Complaint’ (2000) written by playwright Kula Nand Ghansala)

                                                 Bhishma Kukreti

There are dramas, and films written or produced everywhere about the worsening education system. For example, ‘Detachment’ film portrays various aspects of the worsening education system. Daniel Appiah-Adjei wrote in a blog ( http://oralvillageideas.blogspot.in/2011/10/article-examination-malpractices.html) about Examination Malpractices with a satirical tone.  There are many satirical articles written in Garhwali about the worsening education system by Bhishma Kukreti and other satirists.
Kula Nand Ghansala wrote a very fine short drama ‘Complaint’ in Garhwali. The short drama deals with the aspects of only one teacher and students of five classes and how the teacher defies all the noble practices of the teacher.  When the guardian complains about his careless duties, the teacher says to the complainer what he wants to do. However, the teacher is shocked to find the reality.
The drama is written with a more humorous style than satirical methods. The dialogues are common in rural Garhwal. The audience will laugh by listening to dialogues of drama but then there is a pain too just after every laugh.

(Review of Garhwali Drama ‘Choli’ (1971) written by Parashar Gaur)

                                    Bhishma Kukreti

There are many dramas/films based on the search for a husband's love subject. For example, ‘When a man loves a woman’ (1994) film takes such a subject.
The bird Choli is a synonym for unfulfilled desires.  There is water in the ocean but human being can’t take it. Parashar gaur wrote and directed the ‘Choli’ drama in 1971. Parvteey Yuvak Manch Delhi presented and staged the Garhwali drama ‘Choli’ (1971) at All Indian Medical Association Hall, ITO Delhi on 25th December 1971.
The story of the drama is the sad story of a woman (performed by Sharda Negi). A Migrated Garhwali marries a village girl of Garhwal. A Newly bride comes to Delhi with her husband. Due to his busy schedule, her husband does not get time for her to share emotions with her. She is in search of love from her husband. When she is just to die the husband says that he loves her.
The drama is sad drama and opens various facets of life.

Ramu Patrol: A Garhwali Awareness Drama about Forest Need, Deforestation, Forestation, Forest Protection and Protecting Eco-System

(Review of a Garhwali Drama ‘Ramu Patrol’ (1998) by playwright@ Kula Nand Ghansala)

                                   Bhishma Kukreti

At the time of the Garhwali King, there was less conflict between government agencies and villagers about the use of forest and forest products in Garhwal.  However, with the forest administration regulation by Trail (1826), the conflict between villagers and the administration started.  Later on, Tehri Garhwal king also started regulating the village land into government land for forests the conflict in Tehri Riyasat became evident.
The conflicts between villagers and the government for forest use by people, malpractices by the selfish interest for forest products, and fire in the forest by intentional, unintentional or ignorance had been there from the day  Trail brought forest regulation. There had been the questions from that day that what are the best ways to defuse the conflicts that forests develop and people e get their dues too.
The Drama ‘Ramu Patrol’ (1998) tries to answer some of the questions. Uttarakhand Forest department Gopeshwar staged the awareness Drama about Forest needs, Deforestation, Forestation, Forest Protection, and Protecting the Eco-System in 1998 in Gopeshwar.  Ganesh Bhatt and Abbal Singh Khatri directed ‘Ramu Patrol’ drama about forest needs, deforestation, forestation, forest protection, and protecting the eco-system.
There are incidents about the need for the forest produces for the needy ones, there incidents of need of forest for income for the poor class, there are events of people who believe government should not own the forest, there is forest mafia taking benefits of conflicts between governing agencies and villagers and there is worries in the forest department to keep forest developing and at the same time people should be satisfied too by getting benefits of developed and protected forests.
Though the drama is for an awareness program Ghanshala uses his dramatic capability in choosing the events, incidents, and proper dialogues that drama does not look like preaching drama but the audience enjoys the drama.

Garibee: a Garhwali Stage Play about You get what You Sow

(Review of a Garhwali Short Stage Play ‘Garibee’ (1992) written by playwright@ Om Prakash Semwal)

                                  Bhishma Kukreti

Garhwali fiction writer and poet Om Prakash Semwal wrote the short play ‘Garibee ‘for the school-going students. The play was staged in Chopta in 1992.
The short Garhwali stage play is about the spread and the bad effects of alcoholism in Garhwal (Gham asta Garhwal mast).
Envied by the rich position of Nartu, Bhadu also starts a country liquor business. Instead of sending school, Bhadu involves his son Gwabrya in the liquor business. Bhadu usually beats Gwabrya for his mistakes. One day Gwabrya takes the cruelest step against his father’s beating.
The play takes two subjects together alcoholism is because the older generation for appreciating alcohol consumption before the children and takes children into the alcohol business. Another implicit story is that what you sow you will get the same.
The stage play or short drama ‘Garibee’ is written for morality teaching but morality is implicit in the stage play and there are no preaching speeches at all. The drama is successful in preaching against alcoholism and also teaches better ways of parenting too.
Om Prakash Semwal uses simple dialogues keeping in mind the children as the audience. The dialogues are from day to day life of rural Garhwal.

Nasha: An Awareness Garhwali Drama about Addiction

(Review of a short Garhwali Drama ‘Nasha’ (1993) written by Om Prakash Semwal)

                                     Bhishma Kukreti

Om Prakash Semwal wrote and staged ‘Nasha’ a Garhwali drama in August 1993 in Chamoli, Rudraprayag- Garhwal - Uttarakhand.  The drama is about making students and parents aware of the reasons, dark sides, and the possibilities of being addiction free.  The drama makes aware parents that if the parents don’t look after the attitude and friend circle of their children there might be the possibility of the child getting tobacco or drug addiction. If the parents don’t take care of the initial level of addiction of the child it becomes very difficult for the child to leave smoking or taking drugs.
Definitely, the drama is written for one aim and that is for students. Therefore, the writer paid attention to the finer points of the subject.
The short drama is also suitable for street theatre or as filler drama.

Daiju: A short Garhwali Drama creating Awareness against Dowry or Evil of dowry

(Review of a short Garhwali drama ‘Daiju’ (1994) written by Om Prakash Semwal)

                                                 Bhishma Kukreti

There was no forced dowry system in the Vedic era, Mahabharata era, or even in the Gupta era in India. It is a complex subject to find the initiating period of forced dowry in marriages. Before independence, there was just the opposite custom that the boy’s parents had to offer money for the bride in Garhwal.
Worldwide there are many dramas, and stage plays against dowry or showing the bad effects of dowry on society as ‘The Fatal Dowry (1632, English), The dowry (a TV drama, 1953), Kalankani (Bengali drama), Ho Uzo Kedna Paloutolo (Goan) , Audal, Swayambar  (Garhwali dramas) , Dahej ki Ag(Haryanavi), etc.
Om Prakash Semwal wrote a drama ‘Daiju’ that creates awareness of the evil of dowry. The drama is idealistic and written for students. ‘Daiju’ is staged in 1994 in (Old) Chamoli Garhwal.  The drama has simple dialogues and is the straight plot with less of figurative dialogue.
There are less characters that students can stage the play showing evils of dowry.

Mero Nati: A Short Garhwali Drama Sharply Criticizing Blind Faith

(Review of Short Garhwali Drama ‘Mero Nati ‘(1989) written by Govind Kapariyal)

                  Bhishma Kukreti
A social and cultural organization Uttarakhand Jan Sanskriti Manch, Gair Sain staged and presented a short Garhwali drama ‘Mero Nati ‘ on 26th April 1989 in Gairsain.  Govind Kapriyal wrote the drama. The drama shows that instead of taking the help of proper medical practitioners people take the help of Mantrik-Tantric and lose their beloved ones.  In this drama, a child becomes ill and family members do not visit to the doctor but do treatment from Mantrik and tantric. In this way the end is pathetic.
Mathur Dev Arya provided background music. The I.P. Uniyal States that the drama Mero Nati ‘criticizes the blind faith and its bad effects very sharply and loudly.
