British travelers and officials had been surveying Garhwal and Kumaon long before Anglo Nepalese war. British were always anxious for knowing strategic places and their importance.
After completing survey of Bhutan, in 1788, Reuben Burrow reached Haridwar. From Haridwar, Reuben Burrow went to Danda Mandal Hill shrine on the Lakhsmanjhula- Neelkanth Road. He reported that he could see Chaukhmaba and Almora Hills from there. Reuben Burrow tried to gauze the heights of those shrines.
In 1789, an Artist Denial reached Shrinagar with a couple of army officials. Denial collected information about mines-minerals, flora, economic condition, geographical aspects, roads etc. Denial drew fine drawing of Shrinagar and Nazibabad. Denial drew map of Garhwal wherein he drew Bhagirathi, Alaknanda Shrinagar, and Devprayag etc. In 1789, Captain John Guthrie reached Shrinagar with compass and found geographical aspects of Garhwal (Phillimore).
In 1796, Captain Hardwick reached Shrinagar Naziabad via Kotdwara – Banghat. Hardwick wrote various aspects of Garhwal and that information were published in Asiatic Researches vol-6.
Survey of Archibald

In 1802-3, Archibald surveyed north of Moradabad and also collected important information about Kumaon. He sent those information to Lieutenant General Wellesley. He reported various aspects of Nepalese defense and administration and conditions of Kumaunis. In 1808, Colebrook reached to Banvasa near Sharda bank and as curious men Kumaunis came to his camp to see a White man. Colebrook asked them details of road reaching to Almora.
Colebrook reached to Bilorighat from Brahmdev Mandi. Colbrook met a few Mewati who used to collect exportation money from grazers and forest contractors. From there Colebrook returned back to Kashipur via Peeparhatti and Saktipur. Colebrook collected important information about Kumaon Tarai and Bhabhar under Nepal.
W.S Web and Reaper
As per advice of Colebrook, East India Company got permission from Nepal King for Lieutenant W.S Web for travelling to Gangotri for knowing the exact source of Ganga River. When Web reached to Haridwar and met Nepalese officer they met him cordially. Web and Reaper met Hastidal Chautariya in Bhimgoda. They went up to Bhatwadi (Bhagirathy valley) and returned to Shrinagar. They also visited Badrinath from Shrinagar.
Web surveyed from Bhagirathi Valley to that place where Ramganga River meets Ganga River. Web took two years for survey and collected important information. Web drew amap wherein he pointed rivers, hills, roads, staying places on those roads and other geographical aspects.

इतिहास विद्यार्थी ::: भीष्म कुकरेती

हिमालय का आकर्षण

कुणिंद काल तक हिमालय का आकर्षण बढ़ गया था अतः पश्चिम से आने वाले यात्रिओं को सहारनपुर व हरिद्वार से हिमालय पंहुचना पड़ता था। यमुना के पश्चिम में गैर हिन्दू धर्मियों का आक्रमण व राज्य होने से कट्टर सनातनियों /बौद्धों को हिमालय या तलहटी में बसना पड़ रहा था।
यमुना गंगा के स्रोत्र ही नही किनारे के कई स्थान तीर्थ स्थान बन गए थे अतः हिमालय के अतिरिक्त बिजनौर , हरिद्वार व सहारनपुर का महत्व बढ़ गया था।
शिवालिक (वहिर्गिरि ) स्रुघ्न से दिखाई देता था। यह क्षेत्र बनैले हाथियों के लिए प्रसिद्द हो गया था (महाभाष्य ५/२/९४ । उस कल में बिजनौर , सहारनपुर व हरिद्वार के वनों से बनैले हाथियों को पकड़ा जाता था और उन्हें पालतू बनाया जाता था।

गढ़वळि बुड़यों की 5 मुख्य समस्यायें

बकौल शंकर पुणतांबेकर बुढ़ापा 'अवकाश प्राप्त श्रृंगार ' च। अब इन अवकाश प्राप्त श्रृंगार का हूंदा कुछ समया तो पैदा ह्वेलि कि ना ?

5 वीं पर असल मा 1 st समस्या

बूड्यों की 5 वीं ना पैलि समस्या या च कि जु आजौ बुड्या युगों पैल जौं जनान्युं तै ऑफ़लाइन छेड़ा करदा छया अब वी जनानी करीना कपूर , सोनम कपूर , कटरीना की फोटो लगैक फेसबुक मा 'हाई अंकी" (अंकल ) , 'हाई ओल' (ओल्ड मैन ) करिक सम्बोधित करदन। द्वापर युग की एक मेरी ऑफ़लाइनै गोपी न तो खुले आम सलाह दे दे कि -अंकी आप बाळु पर कुछ डाइ स्याइ कारो। फिर मे सरीखा टायर (Tier ) याने थक्यूँ बि नि रौंद किन्तु लोग रिटायर (दुबर थक्यूँ ) करिक भट्यान्दन।

4 वीं पर असल मा टॉप की समस्या

अब हमर ज़माना मा रिवाज छौ कि पत्नी उमर मा छुटि हूण चयेंद तो मे जन कथगा इ पुरानी इमारतुं की पत्नी अबि बि इन लगदन कि जन अबि अबि भितर पैंचि ( गृह प्रवेश ) ह्वे हो। दुकानदार म्यार दगड़ बाति नि करदन पर मेरी वाइफ का साथ ही बचळयाणा रौदन तो मि उपेक्षा , फ़ालतू , इग्नोर फील करण मिसे जांदु अर आप सब तै पता च आदिम भूक , तीस , झिड़की सब कुछ बर्दास्त कर सकद पर उपेक्षा , फालतू , इग्नोर बर्दास्त नि कौर सकुद। मि अर मेरी वाइफ हाथ पर हाथ मिलैक चलणा रौला तो रस्ता चलदा पैथर बिटेन छोरा -छोरी कमेंट्स करदन - दुसर शादी वळाक समस्या ये इ हूंद कि वु अपण जवान कज्याण से चिपक्युं रौंद। भौत सा तो एक्स्ट्रा कमेंट्री करिक बुल्दन - दुसरै बीबी घुमाणो मजा इ कुछ हौर हूंद।

3rd समस्या याने शमशान घाटौ रेगुलर टूरिस्ट

जब से बेटों तै पता चल कि मि बुड्या ह्वेइ ग्यों तो तब बिटेन क्वी शादी , बर्थ डे पार्टी , इंगेजमेंट पार्टी हो तो अफिक जांदन अर मि तै नि भिजदन किन्तु क्वी मोरि गे तो फ्यनेरल मा या चौथा (गुजराती मा बसेणा ) मा मि तै भिजदन। अब शादी ब्यौ ना शमशान घाट इ अपण जाण पछ्याणक वळु तै मिलणो माध्यम ह्वे गे।

2nd समस्या --मुख मा दांत नीन , पेट मा आंत नीन अर मुख ऐथर कछबोळी

पैलाक मैना गौं ग्यों तो मीन तूंगी काका तै हाल चाल पूछें तो ऊंन बताइ -ब्यटा क्या बोलु , क्या खैरि लगौं , क्या सुणौ ?

घुंड हिल्दा नि छन अर मुंड हिलण बंद नि हूंद किन्तु यूँ गूणी,बांदर अर सुंगरुँ जग्वाळ करणी पड़द। अर यि निर्भागी गूणी बांदर बि समजी गेन कि म्यार घुंड अर मुंड वरिष्ठ नागरिकौ पेंसन खाणा छन तो म्यार हकाण से बि नि डरदन।

ब्यटा ! गाँव वळु हाल नि पूछ तो ठीकि राल। जब जवान छौ तो कछबोळी नाम सूणिक आंत बुळबुळान्द छा , दांत किटकिटांद छ , जीब लप लप करदि छे तो बुगठ्या मरण पर क्वी बि एक लुतकी नि दींद छौ। अब जब कि मुख मा दांत नीन , पेट मा आंत नीनतो अपण गाँव इ ना न्याड़ -ध्वारक गाँव वळ बि कछबोळी बुजिन भेजी दींदन कि पता नि बुड्या कब टुरक जांद धौं तो बुड्या आशीर्वाद इनि मा सै !

1st समस्या - प्रवासी बुड्यो की दिल की इच्छा पूरी नि हूण

प्रथम बार प्रवासी जनरेसन की सबसे प्रमुख समस्या या च कि उ गाँव नि बिसर सकुद अर शहर मा जिंदगी भर सुपिन दिखद कि वैन रिटायर हूणो बाद गाँव मा बसण किन्तु वैकि स्याणी वैमा इ रै जांदन। कथगा इ व्यवहारिक कारणु से वु प्रवासी रिटायर हूणों बाद गांव तो बसण दूर की बात च खाली ह्वेका बि प्रवासी बुड्या साल भर मा एक दिनों बान गांव नि जै पांदो अर बेबस ह्वेका गांवका कूड़ , पेड़ , पाणी तै याद करिक बुढ़ापा कटणो मजबूर रौंद। बेबसी, प्रवासी, गढ़वळि बुड्या बिचारो !

In 1809, The Saharanpur Magistrate asked an Engineer Stephen for making correct map of North Saharanpur. From November 1809 till March 1811, Stephen surveyed the region of between Ganga and Yamuna of North. Stephen also surveyed ahead of plains as ports of Shivalik (Timli, Khedi, and Mohan) bordering Saharanpur and Dehradun (Pillimore). Stephen also surveyed lower part of Himalaya (Jaunsar Bhabhar). Stephen proceeded ahead of Kalsi and reached to that place from where Yamuna descends into plains from Hills. Stephen enquired about road and geographical condition of road from Kalsi to Sirmour region. After getting information, Stephen returned to his head quarter. Stepehen sketched the map of Shivalik shrines, Doon Valleyes, Nalapani hills. By enquiring from tourists, he also showed the road from Dehradun to Nahan (Sirmour, Himachal).
In May 1811, a Tiruhit Indigo Plantation owner Higgins reached to Haridwar. On 4th may, Higgins reached to hill top of Chandi. He called that hill top as ‘Mountain of Moon’ (Bengal past and Present, September 1934). Higgins and his associate wanted entering in Gurkha ruling region. He came to know that Gurkha army is not stationed at Kansaro Port. On 14th May 1811, he entered into Dehradun via Kansaro Port. He met local Gurkha resident in Dehradun on 17th May 1811. On 20th May 1811, Higgins reached to Chakrata –Mussoorie Hill shrines with his associates. He called that shrine as ‘Tibet Hills second’. On 3oth May he returned to Badshah mahal (Saharanpur) via Timli Ghat. Emperor Shahjahan used to visit to Badshah Ghat for hunting.

In October 1811, Francis White who had visited Sirmaour was asked to visit Lakhsman Jhula and Kalsi region. However, in October 1813, Francis fell ill and could not complete the task. John Houseman was the assistant to Francis. Now, Houseman was handed over to complete survey of Dehradun. Houseman surveyed Dehradun and Shivalik valleys from November 1813 to April 1814. Local Gurkha officers permitted Houseman for survey in Dehradun and visiting Bhadraj Hills. In April 1813, Houseman reached to Bhadraj Hill. He travelled by Pinus/Doli (Pliilmore). It took four hours from downhill to Hill top of Bhadraj. He stayed in camp on the top and watched Himalaya Shrines from there.
Houseman had a strong desire to push Gorkha Far East of Kali River that East India Company had path to reach Central Himalaya. In 1814, Houseman sketched a map of North of Saharanpur border and Doon valleys. Houseman met Army Chief while travelling by Streamer in Ganga for Kolkata. Houseman handed over the Map of North Bordering region and Dehradun region to Amy Chief and complete details about the region. Houseman wrote that his map and details were very important for capturing Doon valley. He advised that by capturing Dehradun/ Doon Valley the East India would separate Nepalese Sutlej territory from other Nepalese territories. By that the Gurkha could not communicate easily with each other.
Crawford and Houseman were engaged in surveying Doon valleys from 1802. One of assistant of Houseman was from Shringar. He used to get information about Nepal. That assistant was ready to reach Kathmandu via Kosi River, Delalghat. Houseman used to get information from travelers, fakirs, Roamers and used to compare the information.
Colonel Fagan and Houseman collected all types of Information about Dehradun. Croford scatched a map showing Haridwar, Garhwal, Gangotri, Himalayan shrines, Tibet Tishulama and Digarchi of Tibet.

माना कि तुम्हारी लीडर्याणी अर राजकुमार तै लैंड बिल पसंद (राजनैतिक कारण ) नी च तो यांक मतलब यो तो नी च कि तुम उत्तराखंड हित की बळी चढ़ै द्यावो ? हरीश जी उत्तराखंड ना तो तुमर च अर ना ही नेहरू खानदान की जागीर कि तुम नीति सरीखा महत्वपूर्ण संस्था की बैठक स का विरोध पार्टी आधार पार करो।

जब नीति आयोग का नाम प्लानिंग कमिसन छौ तो कौन सा धज घटेणा छया ? प्लानिंग कमिसन या नीति एक संस्था च तो भारतीय एक्जीक्यूटिव याने राज्य का CEO हूणो नातन नीति बैठक मा तुमर भाग लीण आवश्यक ही छौ।

आजकाल पार्टयूं मा' देश बड़ो ना राजनीतिक स्वार्थ बड़ो ' सिद्धांत बड़ो ह्वे गे। नेताओं का अहम देश से बड़ो ह्वे गे। ममता बनर्जी को अहम भारतवर्ष से बड़ो च। भाजपा को अहम इण्डिया'ज बेनिफिट्स से कखि ऐंच ह्वे गे। नेहरू हिंदुस्तान से बड़ दिखेण चयेंद।

Moorcroft surveyed Kumaon and Garhwal comprehensively for East India Company. He travelled the region pretending as Hindu Gusain with his tem in 1812. Ex Maratha soldier, Captain Haidar Hearsay, Haidar Khan and Pundit Harakdev also travelled with Moorcroft. Hearsay had the task for measuring road, making road map with the help o f Compass and writing full details of the road and adjoining land. Pundit had to measure the road length by his step. His four two step was equal to four feet (Hugue Pears, The Hearsays).
After Moorcroft introducing Hearsay to east India Company, hearsay dispatched army strategic information about Nepal, Kumaon and Garhwal.
On 24th August 1814, wrote letter to Company Secretary John Adam informing about high tussle between Chautaria and Thapa groups in Kathmandu. Hearsay suggested that due to cut throat conflicts between two groups in Nepal, Company can dislodge the Nepal King.
Hearsay informed authentic details of numbers of Nepalese soldiers, guns, arms and ammunition, guns, gun powder, forts and soldiers and also informed the road details of Kumaon, Garhwal and Sirmour to East India Company.
Hearsay informed that Gurkha soldiers are perfect brave, faithful, strong soldiers. Gorkha army did not supply them satisfactory dress, and arms and ammunition. The guns and gun pewter were of very inferior quality. He informed that many soldiers did not have gun but either a wood rod or Sword. Every soldier had Khukari hung on his back. Soldiers spent night or sun under temporary Chhapar (tree logs covered by leaves). The Gurkha soldiers were very faithful and did not hesitate for dying for King. They were Hindu and used to take Lunch/dinner together and did not take Beef at all. Nepal government paid very low salary to soldiers. Hearsay suggested that by more salaries, Gurkha soldiers would join British army (Saksena, Historical papers related to Kumaon).
Hearsay also submitted information about mineral resources, forests, forest produces, of Garhwal, Kumaon and Dehradun. Hearsay informed strategic places of Dehradun and Kiyardoon important for war and defense purposes.
Hearsay informed to the Company high cadre officials that the subject of Kumaon, Garhwal and Himachal are against Gurkha due to Gurkha oppressive methods. He clearly suggested that people from Kali east to Sutlej would help Company for getting freedom from Nepalese rule. Hearsay assured that since, people were not with Gurkha, the Company could evacuate Gurkha from Kumaon, Garhwal and Himachal within a month. He guessed that Doti subjects hated Gurkha but they would not help the Company because then , they were habitual of suppression.

Hjajme Nakmura states in his book A History of Early Vedanta Philosophy Vol.2 page- 64" Srughna is refereed frequently in Mahabhashya. It has been said that Srughna is either Saharanpur or Sugh of Today.

कुलिंद जनपद का मुख्यालय स्रुघ्न यमुना तट पर बसा था। संभवतया तब यमुना उस ओर बहती थी जहां आज यमुना की पश्चमी नहर बहती है।
नगर रक्षा हेतु सुदृढ़ प्राकार बना था। प्राकार का निर्माण ईंटों से हुआ करता था। प्राकार चौड़ा था और लोग उस पर चला करते थे। उस समय तीन ही राजधानियों में सुरक्षित प्राकारा थे। काशिका ने भी स्रुघ्न के प्राकार प्रकार किया है - अंतरा तक्षशिलां पाटलिपुत्र च स्रुघ्नस्य प्राकाराः।
स्रुघ्न के बाहर गहरी परिखा थी जिसमे यमुना का जल भरा होता था। प्राकार पर कई द्वार थे जो द्वारपालों से सुरक्षित थे। पारिखा के उप्र पल भी थे। आक्रमणकारी पुल व प्राकार को भेद कर ही नगर में घुस सकते थे।
सातवीं सदी तक स्रुघ्न के प्राकार का ऊपरी हिस्सा गिर चुका था किन्तु निचला हिस्सा दृढ़ता से बचा हुआ था।
स्रुघ्न में राजकीय आगार , आवास
स्रुघ्न नगर में राजकीय निवास, राजसभा , कोषागार , भंडार , आदि बने थे।
शुल्क उगाई के लिए शुल्कशालाएं थीं।
आमोद प्रमोद हेतु नाट्यशालाएं निर्मित थीं।
आगारों का दायित्व उनमे नियुक्त अधिकारीयों का था। इन सभी हेतु अधिकारी थे।
नगर में चुदे मार्ग थे। रथ चलते थे। भीतरी भाग में 'पुर ' (सभ्रांत ) व बाहरी बहग में चाण्डालादि वर्ग निवास करते थे।
मकान
वर्षा का पानी मकानों में न घुसे इसलिए मकानों के फर्स ऊँचे और पक्के बनाये जाते थे। प्रकाश व वायु आने जाने हेतु मकानों में गोल खिड़कियां होती थी। घर के अंदर आँगन होते थे। स्नानागार होते थे। टांगने के लिए खूंटियां दीवार में गाडी जाती थी। घर में दीपक रखने हेतु अलग जगह होती थी।
घर के द्वार बंद करने लौह श्रिंघला /चेन होती थीं।
सभ्रांत बहुमंजली प्रासादों में रहते थे। समृद्धि अनुसार प्प्रासादों का आकर व रचना होती थी। दीवारें ईंटों की होती थी। ऊपरी मंजिल में मालिक व निचली मंजिलों में सहायक रहते थे।
स्रुघ्न के प्रासाद दूर से ही दिख जाते थे। प्रासादों के मामले में स्रुघ्न व पाटलिपुत्र संपन शहर थे।
प
प्रसादों को समाज व स्रुघ्न का गौरव माना जाता था।
